I'm a fan of the microtex too, and have the "metal blue" variety on my
650b fixed gear, coincidentally. it's kind of a flashy, bold blue - i
really dig it, but it's a very different look than cloth/shellac.

Rob,

I was able to take a snow ride while visiting family in St. Louis for
Christmas.

A bit of slipping and sliding on the icey bits, but it certainly makes

For one thing, the Pasela tread is roughly twice as thick. That alone

resistance.

[RBW] Re: Arkel Mounting System work with Nitto Big Back Rack?

2009-12-30 Thread Forrest
I have some newer Arkel panniers (T-42?) that I use on a Nitto large
rear rack, but I actually installed Arkel's previous-generation
mounting hardware (without the cams) on the bags. Arkel will sell you
a set of the older (NOS) mounting hardware, or at least they did to me
a year or so ago. Can't remember cost, but I don't think it was
outrageous. This could be a way to go if you really want to keep the
Nitto rack. -- Forrest

I have been using an Arkel Shopping Bag and the Nitto rack together
for many years. No problem. I also use the Carradice Commuter bag
occasionaly and find it works, but is a little awkward. I really like
both the Nitto rack and Arkel bags. Good to know that you can still
get the previous mounting hardware. I wonder why they changed it,
since it works great and is easy to set up and take on and off the
bike.

[RBW] Re: Arkel Mounting System work with Nitto Big Back Rack?

2009-12-30 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
One reason they changed the hook system was that the center wingnut on
the old hook kit had the potential to scrape the finish off the rack.
A lot of people didn't like the idea of scrapes on an expensive rack.
Personally, I see racks as workhorse equipment - if used properly they
should get singed up a bit!

[RBW] California & Steel Bike Uber Alles Mt Tam Ride

2009-12-30 Thread Esteban
Franklyn, who used to have a Romulus and now has an Ebisu and
Kogswell, led Lee (Ebisu), Aaron (Romulus), Erik (Bleriot), and myself
(Romulus) on a great ride up from the Mission in San Francisco up Mt.
Tam, over to the Alpine Dam, through Fairfax and back as a great way
to end 2009.

On a stop at The Station in Mill Valley, we saw a fellow on a nice
orange Rambouillet with tweed bags, looking to find his way up the
Railroad Grade. It was Jim Warren from the list. He joined us and we
all had a great time.

Three of us were So Cal Riv Riders (with family in the Bay Area), and
three Bay Area folks. Despite the territorial tension (re: In Smog
and Thunder: http://www.insmogandthunder.com/trailer-play.html) we had
a great time!

Here are some photos:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/25671...@n02/sets/72157623101143324/

I BARTed back to the East Bay in time to see the Riv staff trying to
make their way across Main St Walnut Creek in time to catch the SF-
bound train, like a bunch of herons taking flight with their flapping
bags and Albatross bars.

[RBW] Re: Archival Musette

2009-12-30 Thread Lesli
Thanks for the early user notes and feedback on the AC musette bags.
Our run of tan bags has sold out but we have a few yellow bags
remaining. Both are made out of waxed cotton.

We'll have a new run of bags at the end of January with the addition
of our flap musette which will have an adjustable strap, internal
pocketing, and yes, a flap. We're hoping to do a canoe-type rucksack
(compact enough to carry on your back while cycling). No rando-
handlebar bags in the works.

We're trying to design a bag--especially model one--that fits a
maximum range of folks (men and women). Do send me your user notes on
strap length and bag size.

You can email me here:

Hi-

Here's a link to some hastily taken pictures of my new 59 cm Roadeo that
arrived on Christmas Eve. The build was done by my LBS, Vecchios, in

I'm waiting for the snow to melt, ;-). I may try to ride it today anyway!

and i love it. have used it for commuting to the shop this week.
love the way it fits. kudos to Lesli and Tom on their

[RBW] Ride Report (Ram in Marin and Chance Meeting with Roms/Bleriot/Kogswell/Ebisu)

2009-12-30 Thread James Warren
This was one of the best rides ever, and Esteban, thanks for the great photo
journal. Thanks to Franklyn for guiding us, including showing me how to get
through the city easily, and thanks to everyone, including Aaron, Erik, and Lee
for inviting me on the ride and the fun times. I have a few photos to add to
Esteban's and a description:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/46035...@n07/sets/72157623101578234/

A group of 5 guys, Aaron, Erik, Esteban, Franklyn, and Lee, with nice steel
bikes met up in San Francisco, crossed the Golden Gate Bridge, rode through
Sausalito and made their way into Mill Valley, where they stopped at a café. By
coincidence, this other guy on a Rambouillet looking to come up with a good
ride in unknown territory, comes to the same cafe, and is invited to ride along
with the other 5. I was the wayward Ram rider, and here is how I ended up there.

I started late Monday taking BART from Berkeley to San Francisco with the
intention of riding into Marin and exploring Marin for a day and a half, stay
overnight somewhere. The Rambouillet is loaded with a rear big loafer, a
banana-type bag on the seat, and a small Keven's bag as a handlebar bag, all
green tweed. I carry a change of clothes, some toiletries, some tools, a bike
lock, camera, Marin Country riding book, etc. It's my favorite inn-to-inn
touring light type of load.

By spending more time in San Francisco than I had planned, I ended up in
Sausalito an hour before sunset. I figured I would risk it by going north and
finding a hotel. It wasn't long before I saw how easy that is (if a bit
expensive). On the secluded "5" bikeway (yes, they are numbered here), the bike
path forked off and went right to the parking lot and front office of the
Holiday Inn Express. I'm on vacation so I splurged and got a room. That
permitted me to tool around a bit until sundown and then set off from here as
early as I wanted the next day.

Got up Tuesday morning, ate the free breakfast, and headed into Mill Valley,
where I ran into the rest of the group.

Ride: went up one of the residential climbs from Mill Valley and eventually got
to Panoramic Highway, a beautiful hilly ride to the Ranger Station. From the
Ranger station there are many options, Old Stage would be a good fire climb
towards the East Peak with the touring bikes, and that will be for another
trip, because we decided to do the full loop which meant taking Pantoll up to
West Ridgecrest, which is the rolling ridge line where many car commercials
were filmed. That is fun to ride along and is incredibly beautiful with ocean
views of Bolinas, as you can see in Esteban's video on his Flickr page. By the
way, the day in Mill Valley started off so foggy that everything was wet, but
by the time we were up at Ridgecrest, it was sunny. After that, descent to
Fairfax, complete the loop on the residential east side.

In Larkspur, I learned that my favorite Italian cafe is on Magnolia Ave., and
going there had been a goal of the day, since I had been there once before and
wanted to find it again. But by now, that goal had been far overshadowed by the
big loop ride and the good company, so I had no trouble just riding by it and
looking in the window as we rode by it to start our pretty long climb on Camino
Alto through Corte Madera.

The climb up from Sausalito to the GG Bridge is substantial, and I liked it,
and then riding with the pedestrians on the bridge was the most dangerous part
of the day.

[RBW] Re: New favorite tire

2009-12-30 Thread doug peterson
The Schwalbe Marathon Supreme is built primarily for puncture
resistance and longevity, and is ideal for loaded touring. However,
it's probably way on the stiff end of the suppleness scale. I pump
'em up every couple of weeks to around 65-70, and when they feel a bit
softish they're down to 40. That's a 700 x 35 size.
I inherited a light wheel set shod with 23 mm rim protectors. These
entirely change the character of my Atlantis (duh!) but I intend to
upgrade the tires. The Jack Browns look to be a good tire for my
sporty wheel set. I'm superstitious about tire sizes that start with
a "2" :).

Seth,

There is no official rule on the start of helmet wars.  Traditionally,
late January to mid-February is prime time.  However, anytime after
the winter solstice holidays, and before Spring is acceptable. This
post may be an early sign of the much anticipated 2010 game.

Ha! I couldn't disagree more. When I read Eric's remark, I assumed I'd
see a "seven" shaped stem jacked up eight inches.
The only problem I can see with this stem is that it's a little fat
compared to the bike tubing, but I've seen fatter. It looks good. A
custom steel stem would require painting, which might offend someone
on the list, so you might not want to do that.

The angle looks about perfect to get the bars where they belong.
Wouldn't flipping it over defeat the purpose?

Great looking bike, Doug, even with gears!

Beautiful bike and build!

I'm guessing you chose to install the stem as you did to give you a
comfortable reach to the bars and opted for a 17 degree rise over a
whole bunch of spacers?.

Hope you and your wife enjoy your Roadeo's. Happy New Year.

Not necessarily. There's plenty of steerer above the stem, so if the
stem was flipped and spacers put under it, the stem would sit higher up
on the steerer, counteracting the reduced uplift of the stem. I'm not
sure that would be enough to achieve the identical handlebar height,
though.

Re: [RBW] Re: New Roadeo!

2009-12-30 Thread Bill Connell
Bah, it's better to have the bike fit. Anyway, it looks like he's
still dialing in the fit, guessing by the spacers above and below the
stem. What we really need are steerer spacers that don't make the bike
look like it's wearing a cheap turtleneck. And more options for
beautiful threadless stems would be nice too.

Hi Richard-

Thanks to all of the group that have responded about my new Roadeo
build. You are indeed correct. As you surmised, the folks at my LBS
convinced me to try the stem with the up sloping configuration to
minimize the number of spacers that would be needed. Trying to be
conservative, I had them leave about 2 cm above the stem so that I could
raise it further in my even older age, ;-) !

I'm used to this look anyway as the Ti bike I've been riding has an up
sloping stem as well.

[RBW] Bar Bags and Roadeos

2009-12-30 Thread Dustin N. Sharp
No, but if you can hit a second audience by simply offering another fork, why
not? Randonneuring is growing, and Francophilia is in vogue. The tubing spec
and other aspects of the frame would make a good fastish Brevet bike.

Seems like low-hanging fruit to me.

Re: [RBW] Bar Bags and Roadeos

2009-12-30 Thread Rene Sterental
Wouldn't the concept of a low trail additional fork option work for
all Rivendell models?

Or is the low trail also coupled with other geometry changes needed to
fully express itself in a great handling bike? By that I mean that the
current great handling shouldn't suffer at all after swapping forks.

My preference would be for a larger frame, to reduce the amount of
exposed seatpost and decrease the amount that the stem needs to lift
the bars above the frame. But that's about aesthetics, more than
function.

I would also prefer a lower-trail geometry on a bike like this, but on
the other hand, Rivendell's geometry works well too, and I have to
appreciate that Rivendell has stuck to their guns and not jumped onto
the trendy bandwagon of low-trail geometry.

On the other other hand, I think low-trail geometry is more than a
trendy bandwagon, and is in fact actually superior.

"Sticking to their guns" pretty much defines Rivendell & Grant, I think.
Long-time readers of _Riv Reader_ will recall, Grant built a test
low-trail bike. He didn't like it.

Unfortunately, he didn't try it with a load on the front or with wide
low pressure tires (both essentials) and he wouldn't consider trying it
again with those items in place. So, from the Rivendell perspective,
the case is closed on low trail.

> On the other other hand, I think low-trail geometry is more than a
> trendy bandwagon, and is in fact actually superior.

For some (but not all) purposes/configurations, I agree. But if the
target audience is predisposed toward carrying little, and that only in
a small seat pack and their jersey pockets, a low trail configuration
that demands a handlebar bag with some weight in it to feel "right" is a
non-starter. I might add, until you see handlebar bags in the pro
peleton (or hell freezes over, whichever comes first) you won't see
racer wannabees and pacelining club riders (the Roadeo target audience,
after all) with them.

[RBW] Re: New Roadeo!

2009-12-30 Thread Richard
The Velo-Orange threadless stems have a polished sliver finish and are
available in six and 17 degree rise. The Velo-Orange threadless stem
steerer clamping length is 40mm, while most of the other threadless
stems available in silver have a 36mm or less steerer clamping
length. The extra length of the Velo-Orange threadless stem can
eliminate one or two of those ugly turtle neck spacers.

Well, if it's beautiful threadless stems you're wanting, check out these

Ahearne is one of several builders who are taking the humble stem
concept and making works of art. Perhaps it is my bias, but I frankly
prefer the two quills in his photo album to the lovely threadless.

Unfortunately, not many of the builders sell stems without their
bike. I have always wondered whether some builder could make a living
just producing great stems as Matt Feeney is (for now anyway) with his
great Pass Stow rack.

I still don't get it. I carry 30+ lb on at least two of my Rivendells, in
the rear of course, and the handling is better than on the Motobecane: I
remember carrying at least 30 lb on Riv #1, which didn't handle as well as 2
and 3, and being very pleased that I could ride it no hands at 10 mph as
well as at higher speeds. I remember passing a pair of riders while riding
the same bike with a smaller but still noticeable rear load just before a
sharp S bend on a narrow bike path that crossed a culvert on an even
narrower bridge, and being surprised at how well the Riv tracked despite the
panniers. Etc Etc. So why would low trail be better for me with my rear
loads up to 40 lb?

[RBW] Re: Went for A bikeride and a snowstorm broke out

2009-12-30 Thread RoadieRyan
LOL I was in PDX yesterday visiting Family and got caught in the
storm but unfortunately in the car, the bike would have worked MUCH
better.
At one point I was going up Johnson Creek blvd and kept looking at the
bike path to see if anyone was on it. Didn't see in riders but I did
see tracks. Glad you had a good ride and made it home safe looking
forward to the pics.

It's a matter of personal preference - there is wide agreement that
frontal loads work better with handlebar bags, but without such a
load, bikes handle pretty well either way.

My comment was not meant to evangelize against the Rivendell geometry,
but rather to express that there is some intrinsic merit to the
Francophile geometry beyond mere trendiness.

Steve didn't say it would be. There seems to be widespread agreement
that high trail is better for rear-biased loads, and low trail better
for front-biased loads. If you aren't familiar with front-biased loads
on a low-trail bike, I suggest you give it a try and compare for
yourself.

Grant has said (in more than one interview) that while he understands
how low trail works he doesn't feel a need to go there with his
designs. I find his dedication to rear-loading bikes a bonus, since
front-loading bikes don't work equally well for everyone.

And while I wouldn't call low-trail geometry a trendy bandwagon
anymore, I do find that it tends to show up only on more expensive
bicycles. More affordable, mass-produced bikes -- including the Surly
LHT, btw -- still have geometries that favor bigger loads in the
rear.

Beth, grateful that not every bike designer has jumped on the same
bandwagon
