That sounds like a good idea. That would be just enough. (Just between us, I have never liked the scalloped "Quickbeam" decal. Too gaudy, imho. [RBW] Re: christmas day canti rom build
Sharp bike! Canti Roms are prized for their fender-able clearance. I have 28mm, 32mm, and 35mm Paselas that I switch out on the Romulus. I run the 28s with fenders, and the 35s just proved their mettle off road in Chino Hills with David and And, and I've been riding them on my "roadie" route on PCH since then. They are revelatory for the Rom. As cushy as my 650B CdlVs on the road and quite capable on fire roads. I don't know if I'll take them off! For me, the difference in appearance and rolling quality between the 28s and 32s are negligible - the 32s are *far* less uncomfortable, though. And that bike is just asking for the 35s! With fenders. Congrats on the bike. Esteban San Diego, Calif. [RBW] The Evolution of Riv Road Bike Versatility
My brother and I did a little errand ride on our Rivendell road bikes on Christmas Eve. He was on his Road Standard, running 23mm Continental Grand Prix 4000s and I on the Romulus with 35mm Paselas. His Road is set-up very light, and the Romulus is nearing its heaviest but most trail-worthy incarnation: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25671...@n02/4214822048/ I sometimes consider proposing a trade, but it is nice to have the ability to run those 35s! Seems like the Roadeo is the logical next step in the evolution in Rivendell's "road" bike thinking - and a nice way to split the difference between the Riv Road and Rom/Rams. [RBW] Christmas Day Ride; Ibex El Fitto Knicker Review
Hope you all had a great holiday and managed to get a ride in, as well. Looking forward to reading the ride reports of others, especially with new Christmas loot! Here's my report: I rode my Canti-Rom from my home in San Francisco to my oldest son's home in San Mateo for family Christmas dinner. My wife drove down in the car, so I came home with her last night. I've been mostly riding my Quickbeam and jamis commuter, and had not been on the Rom for several weeks. It was fun feeling like I was on a "fast" road bike, again. I decided to ride down the peninsula via the Presidio, Aquatic Park, Embarcadero, SFO, and the Bay Trail. Got as far as Crissy Field in the Presidio before I stopped to take my first photo of a jolly police officer riding a real reindeer! That's when I discovered that my camera battery was dying, although I thought I had charged it. Anyway, I managed one or two shots with it before it quit, the rest of the pix are with the iPhone. Best I could do. After the cop on the reindeer, I rode down along Embarcadero to ATT&T Park where I bumped into a fellow I had not seen since I retired 6 years ago. He was just walking along and I was surprised to see him after all these years. We chatted for about 45 minutes. That set me back, time wise, as my wife had given me strict orders not to arrive at the family gathering any later than 1500 hours. As luck would have it, I was right down the street from the CalTrain station. I have a CalTrain schedule app on my iPhone, and a quick glance of it revealed that I could catch the next train south that was leaving in seven minutes! I rode down, bought the ticket and rode the train as far as San Bruno. That covered about seven miles, and caught me up with the ride schedule. >From San Bruno CalTrain, I continued on my previously planned route and made it to the festivities with 15 minutes to spare. I freshened up, changed clothes (My wife brought down my duffel with the party clothes inside), and had a great evening. The Ibex El Fitto Knickers worked really well. I like my Swobo knickers a smidge better fit-wise, but these are a very close second. I also really like the wind panels that they have across the front of the knees. Those really do block the chilly air. The elastic bands on the calves tended to allow the bottom of each leg to rise more than I like, but it wasn't enough to dissuade me from using these again. The workmanship is superb, and the fit very nice around the thighs and butt. Good riding gear. Here are a few pix, including the cop on a reindeer! http://www.flickr.com/photos/8581...@n03/sets/72157623073460738/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] The Evolution of Riv Road Bike Versatility
Esteban's Romulus is one of my favorites. the photo of it against a darker blue painted wall is in fact a wallpaper in my Webshots rotation. My Riv Road is about the same blue (you know, the early light blue that they came in) and this morning, I took it on a 40 mile ride at 32F over coarse and hilly rural roads. The MaxyFastys (33.4 mm) made the bike truly a dream to ride over rough roads. My aluminum framed companions were not quite so happy with their own mounts. The bike is converted to 650B which is how I can use them, and going that route is another option in the "evolution" of road bike thinking. It will take fatter tires still, should I want them. If I wanted to race the bike (zero chance of that, as anyone who has ridden with me can attest) I'd put on 32 mm Cypres at max pressure, or possibly the upcoming 38 mm Pari-Moto tire from Pascenti. (yes, it is supposed to be a fast fat tire) Tailwinds From: Esteban To: RBW Owners Bunch Sent: Sat, December 26, 2009 11:18:18 AM Subject: [RBW] The Evolution of Riv Road Bike Versatility I sometimes consider proposing a trade, but it is nice to have the ability to run those 35s! [RBW] Re: Slightly OT: S24O in Adventure Cycling
Hi Everyone! Grant Petersen wrote an article titled "S20Os: Bicycle Camping for the Time Challenged" that was published in Adventure Cycling's Adventure Cyclist magazine in January of 2007. The link to the article is here: http://www.adventurecycling.org/resources/Petersen_S240s.pdf If you're not familiar with Adventure Cycling, in my opinion, they are a very BOBish organization. They're all about getting people on bikes - in fact, their mission statement is " to inspire people of all ages to travel by bicycle for fitness, fun, and self-discovery." While the organization is the only one I know of that has guided "expedition"- type trips, they also have shorter organized tours along with a 45,000 mile network of mapped routes in the US. The routes are both point-to- point and loops, and you can make a ton of loops out of the point-to- point routes. They're good people with a good mission, have been at it since 1974, and support the same sort of things that we do here. Their mission and vision statements are here: http://www.adventurecycling.org/whoweare/mission.cfm I hope that all of you are able to ride all you want to in the coming year. Not sure where to send you locally, but where I live the local flag and banner shop (Elmer's) sells hard rubbery-plastic pinbacks that hold pins on more firmly than the original metal backs do. There's also a metal pinback that's spring-loaded and grips better than the originals. (My Caffeinated Wheelmen pin came with this version and so far no problems). [RBW] Re: Seat Bags - a set on Flickr
Here's my oldest saddlebag, purchased in 1998 or so when Carradice briefly ran out of the black fabric and made up a forest green run for Rivendell to sell. I decided to go ahead and buy the green one rather than wait who-knows-how-long for the black bags to return: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethness/3352745506/ And yes, I *earned* those "Camper" and "Biker" merit badges (back when the earth cooled). Found them in my box of Girl Scout memoribilia a couple of years ago and decided to add them to the bag. [RBW] B-17 vs. Champion Flyer
After having taken a couple of rides on and off-road with my Bombadil, and after seeing many pictures of Bombadil and Atlantis bikes with sprung saddles, I've begun wondering if putting a Champion Flyer saddle on the Bombadil is a good move. Obviously on the road the B-17 feels fine, but off-road you have to always stand up when going over rough stuff. How do others here feel about the Champion Flyer and what would be the pros/cons of doing such a move? What are the advantages of using one for on-road riding/touring? Thanks all! I have a Champion Flyer on my commuter. I doubt I'd buy another one. While you can still attach a large saddle bag to the saddle, because of the springs you can't attach a smaller bag such as a Barley or XS Sackville. It's also very heavy. I find B-17s to be pretty darn comfy without the springs. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] B-17 vs. Champion Flyer
I have one for sale if you or anyone else is interested... $60 + shipping to find out if it works for you!!! What a bargain! I find the springs are nice and take a little bit of the edge off, but the tops are too soft for my taste (different leather than B17???). Re: [RBW] B-17 vs. Champion Flyer
I have both; the B-17 on my Quickbeam, which I have set up with Noodle bars to give me the most variety of position possible, and the Champion Flyer on a 1997 Cannondale F-900 with Albatross bars set up for more upright "city" riding, which, however, allows me to lean forward on the bends of the Albatross bars, if I don't need brakes. The Cannondale has a suspension fork, and the springs in the saddle give me a fully "suspended" ride. It's really just fine for rough dirt roads and city lumps, allowing me to stay seated on bigger bumps in the road, especially on longer rides when I sit upright more, and ride more leisurely. I can ride all day on the Quickbeam, though, just about anywhere. My muscles provide suspension, of course, on big and small bumps, on both bikes. Recent research, and experience, shows that a lot of rider energy goes into adapting to rough roads. This research shows that suspension works best when it's closest to the road: tires first, then frame, then saddle and bars. I'm surprised that more rough riders haven't adopted a sprung saddle, even on top of a full-suspension frame and fat tires for really rough trails. Tires have limits, and suspended frames have stiction, while saddle springs have no stiction, like tires, and easily absorb high frequency vibrations, and even though they have limits in the amplitude of the shocks they can absorb. And really, I have no use for complicated mechanical suspension where I want to ride a bike. I'd just as soon walk and smell the creosote brush as ride a fully suspended bike on a really technical trail (for me) these days. In other words, of course, the Champion Flyer would be a fine choice for a Bombadil! Why not? Cost & weight isn't the factor it might be for lesser frames. The only caveat might be the variable quality of Brooks leather these days. I've had good luck with mine, but really thick leather seems to be found on Berthoud saddles, which don't come with springs so far as I know. [RBW] Year end summary and initial Bombadil feedback...
I'm getting ready to leave for a family vacation in Ft. Lauderdale, so there won't be any more riding for me this year unless I manage to do some convincing and we rent some beach cruisers to ride there... What a year this one has been, and I'm only talking about cycling; no other serious stuff for now. After a very difficult cycling 2008, where the year went by and I wasn't able to accomplish any of my personal cycling and weight loss goals, 2009 was much better. I managed to get into a pretty steady biking commute to work, either riding one way in the morning (12.5 miles) and taking Caltrain back home in the evening (4 miles+train) when I wasn't traveling, which was pretty often in the second half of the year. I discovered Rivendell and closed the year with an A. Homer Hilsen and a Bombadil, having sold a Gunnar CrossHairs and a Cannondale F500 that just couldn't fit me no matter how hard I tried. Still on the judgement table, an almost brand new (100 miles or so) full carbon and 16.5 lbs Specialized Roubaix SL2 with a combo of Sram Red components that I can't quite fit in comfortably after riding the Rivendells. Waiting for the spring to see how much I can get for it. Managed to loose about 20 pounds (not continuously) over the 12 month span, but regained about 2 - 3 pounds during the holidays. I start the year full of excitement about continuing to commute regularly (and overcome my resistance to ride in the rain), continue to lose weight and becoming fitter now that I can ride pretty comfortably so I can start introducing some longer rides (Ray must think I'm bluffing, but I really want to ride with him from San Francisco to Palo Alto) and really hoping I'll be able to join any local Rivendell rides as well as get started with the newly (for me) discovered concept of the S24O. Now to the Bombadil report... I've ridden the Bombadil with 29er knobby tires on mountain biking trails twice, although I must say those trails are quite mild. Once in Arrastradero Preserve in Palo Alto, and the second time in China Camp. Both times the rides were a blast, and I was very surprised at how comfortable, compliant and secure I felt on the Bombadil. I rode with Moustache handlebars and must say that I really love them on the dirt. The trails were compact and the Bombadil tracked beautifully. Over rocks and other rough spots, I just stood on the pedals and flowed with the bike in a way I must say just felt perfect. I then switched wheels and rode with 40mm Marathon Extreme tires on the road and some dirt trails around Stanford (Lagunita). On the pavement, the bike rolled very smoothly and quietly; there was no hint of noise from the tires and they felt very smooth and with little rolling resistance. I never tried the previous Marathon XT tires, but I must say these are great. Off road, the bike handled perfectly and even while going through some short steep climbs where I had to stand on the pedals to clear them, the bike never hesitated nor the tires slipped. I'm seriously considering leaving those tires permanently on the bike, as it seems the Bombadil is going to be my bike for trail riding and not really technical mountain biking as I'll use my dual suspension trail bike for the more technical riding, at least for now. We'll have to see if I end up avoiding the dual suspension bike in favor of the Bombadil or not. I may also try the Marathon Supremes in the 700 x 2.0 version, but am not sure about that yet. Riding the Moustache bars on the road has produced some hand pain/discomfort so I've been playing with both the tilt and the height of the bars to address that. It seems I've finally got it to a point where the discomfort is minimized, but all I've done are 1 hour rides these past few days so I don't know how my hands would fare on longer rides on the road. With its ultimate use goal as it appears to be shaping up, when I get back from my family vacation, I'll put steel fenders on the Bombadil and report back. I didn't quite like how the Cascadia fenders looked, so I didn't install them and since they didn't have any safety releases as I had expected, then there doesn't seem to be any point in keeping them. I'll either return them or put them for sale if I can't return them. So far, my best cycling highlight of the year, as you can all surmise, was my discovery and introduction to the Rivendell philosophy of cycling, and to its bikes. Being close to Walnut Creek and having the privilege of visiting them, pestering them and asking lots of questions is like icing on a delicious cake. They have been great with me and always put up with my questions with a smile. The support I've found in this group complements the whole experience in an unbelievable way that I couldn't have hoped to find anywhere else. Happy New Year everyone!!!
