[RBW] Northern Thailand Riv ride: Every Monday, usually at 3:30 pm

2009-12-24 Thread Earl Grey
Hi everyone,

on the remote chance that there are any other ROB members hiding out
in or visiting Northern Thailand, Kip and I would like to invite any
of you to our weekly ride. Usually at 3:30 pm, leaving from Lanna
International School on the Hang Dong road just south of the airport.
But switching to longer morning rides when school is on break.

If you are passing through and don't have a bike, let us know, we can
probably hook you up if you are between 5' 3" and 6'.

Check http://www.flickr.com/photos/25150...@n08/ for some pics.

Cheers, and Merry Xmas,

Gernot

2009-12-24 Thread JoelMatthews
Thanks for sharing and the holiday wishes. Back at you.

Pretty cool to see Rivs distinctive lugged beauty fitting in so well
in such a distant location.

Not going to happen this year, that is for sure. But let me tell you,
here in Chicago that Thailand Riv Ride looks mighty good. Not
terribly cold today, but boy, is it a sloppy mess. Snow, salt and
freezing rain have combined to make the roads as rough as the unpaved
paths you guys are riding on in the picture. We get all the work but
none of the balmy weather rewards.

Perhaps next summer. My wife will be visiting her family in the south

I think I've gotten pretty close to going overboard, but I just couldn't
resist. My Quickbeam got some deliveries this week so I went to work today and
added...
Front and rear leather mudflaps

Velox bar plugs - I'd already lost one of the inexpensive plastic push-on ones
so...Another Nitto T-cage for water bottles - with matching tube socks :-)
(which work great to keep water cool when I wet 'em down)

2 Klean Kanteen stainless bottles now that I have two cagesand...a leather
chainstay protector which probably pushes the whole thing over the edge

Now all that's left (till I swap everything out for all new
over-the-edge-of-good-taste stuff) is some sort of bag for the front and maybe
a generator/light combo. The bag will come first I suspect.

Sorry about the quality of the shots, I had to head out to a volunteer thing so
all I had time to do was take some iPhone shots.

I wrap electricians' tape strategically around my steel bottles, tho' this
does have the disadvantage that different cages require different locations.
It's pretty effective, if you don't mind tape beausage ("bow SAHJ").

[RBW] Re: 650B conversion questions

2009-12-24 Thread Bryan @ Renaissance Bicycles
I have it on good authority (http://sheldonbrown.com/podcasts/
grantpetersen.mp3) that a 700x23c wheel + tire is roughly equivalent
in diameter to a 650Bx38c wheel + tire. So if you can measure your BB
drop with a "normal" wheelset, this should give a pretty good idea of
the predicted BB drop.

And from experience, I would leave the Canti mounts in place until you
actually get the 650B rims test fitted to the bike ... just in case
(for whatever unforeseen reason) Calipers don't work, you have a
backup plan.

ATMO, any bike is a good candidate for a "fun" conversion. Assuming
this is not your primary bike, there is no harm in putting a
worthwhile bike back into service and learning a few things along the
way. And if it is your main ride, do it anyway.

Good luck and Happy Holidays,

Bryan

[RBW] Re: Slightly OT: S24O in Adventure Cycling

2009-12-24 Thread Mike
This past summer I did two solo S24O's and one 8 day tour. The tour
was probably the most enjoyable cycling experience of my life. I could
have easily gone for another week or 5. Next year I don't think I'll
be doing any touring but am hoping to do extended overnight camping
trips riding 300k to 400k. Going the extended distance allows me to
get deep into Gifford Pinchot National Forest and other areas outside
of Portland. Should be fun. But man, if I could do another week long
tour, or a month long tour... My dream tour would be to ride from
Portland up into Canada and do the Dempster Hwy.

There are several journals describing doing that ride (not my cup of
tea). The first CGOAB journal of riding the Dempster Highway was
written by Pat Rodden. It is well-written and the photos are
astonishing. IN awful news, though, Pat subsequently suffered
terrible brain injuries in a fall from a ladder at home:

Sorry to mention tragedy at Christmas. Hug your family and friends
and count your blessings! And a happy holiday of your choice to all.

Tim (working on being snowbound in Minnesota like a bunch of other
RBW members. Bikes, skis and showshoes may be the only way to get
around by Saturday. 6" so far and 15" more expected).

[RBW] Reynolds 753 WAS: F.S. 56.5 Waterford built All Rounder $1200

2009-12-24 Thread JL
I have heard stories about a few early examples of 753 cracking/
failing under stress while working the bugs out of the heat treating
process. On early Riv production bikes (Road Standard, Long Low and
All Rounders) Grant spec'd the frame tubes with slightly longer butt
sections (not sure if all tubes/both ends, but at least at the crucial
points) for added strength and longevity.

[RBW] Re: Northern Thailand Riv ride: Every Monday, usually at 3:30 pm

2009-12-24 Thread Earl Grey
Yes, we are in Chiang Mai City. Northern Thailand is indeed a cycling
paradise. There are lots of little roads criss-crossing the landscape
with very little car traffic. Most are paved, but plenty turn to dirt
as they snake over a ridge, to return to tarmac on the far side.
Perfect terrain for pass-hunting, and all-road riding. There are
plenty of accomodations most everywhere for light touring, and both
local pickup-truck "buses" (song taews) and real long-distance buses
accommodate bikes readily for riding farther afield.

Gernot

By the time Riv specd 753 on their frames, it had been around for quite some
time. 853 was just coming along around not long after. I would imagine that
Reynolds had worked out things by then.

There were also issues with builders overheating the tubes. Used to
be that Reynolds used to have builders pass a certification process
before they could buy 753, consisting of a lug and couple of tubes
which the builder would braze together and send to Reynolds for
evaluation. They required the use of silver rather than brass to
reduce the risk of overheating- except for Norman Taylor. Reynolds
allowed him to use brass with 753 because of his skill with a torch.
I suppose building 8500+ frames teaches you a thing or two.

[RBW] SoCal Christmas Afternoon Ride?

2009-12-24 Thread Joe Bartoe

Hi Everyone,

I always think of these things too late, but was curious if anyone in the SoCal
area wanted to meet up in South Orange County for an afternoon ride on
Christmas day. Nothing too long or too fast. I live in the Capistrano Beach
area so starting in that area. Will provide after ride coffee and/or beer as
long as I don't have massive turnout.

Happy Holidays,

Joe

Re: [RBW] Re: Slightly OT: S24O in Adventure Cycling

2009-12-24 Thread Rene Sterental
I am also making one of my goals for 2010 to try to do at least an S240 and
focus on lighter touring as described here. I've also had a rough end of the
year regarding time on the bike, so the fitness has lapsed and the weight
control plans are on shaky ground. I also plan on joining as many local
Rivendell rides as I can, assuming that I won't get dropped too far
behind... :-D

Since I'm still quite heavy, my Bombadil is going to be my loaded touring
bike for whatever I manage to pull off.

[RBW] Darning Socks

2009-12-24 Thread Bill Gibson
One of the great things about finding Rivendell has been finding a
source for real wool clothing. I love real wool socks, but 100% wool
doesn't wear as well as blends. Sooner or later, even with blends,
you'll need to learn how to do this!:

I liked the Rivendell crew's instructional videos, but people were
hypercritical and they seem to have stopped making them...

Thank you for the link Tim. Quite sobering to read the log of a

in a near coma. Things can and do change so quickly.

[RBW] Ernest Csuka has passed away

2009-12-24 Thread Tim McNamara
I noted on the Velo Orange blog today that Ernest Csuka, the artisan
maker of Alex Singer cycles for more than 60 years, has died on
12/22/09. He was 81 years old. M. Csuka's eminently practical
cycles were also very beautiful. With his death goes the last of the
grand builders of randonneuses from the golden age of French
constructeurs.

Au revoir et mai roues de votre vélo vous porter vers de nouveaux
horizons, M. Csuka.

RE: [RBW] Re: SoCal Christmas Afternoon Ride?

2009-12-24 Thread Joe Bartoe

That's tood bad you two can't make it. I'll be leaving town for a few days
Saturday morning. I should be back about Wed or Thurs and free until the 4th if
you want to ride then. Let me know.

As for anyone else, my plan is to get out around 1PM tomorrow from Capo Beach.
Let me know if you care to join in.

Best wishes,

Joe

Off work?? I'm not sure that I'm familiar with the term. I was also
considering a semi-epic New Years Day ride also though...
