[RBW] FS ActionTec Titanium Cogset 11-36
Lots of discussion of use of an Atlantis on the Great Divide. Here is a handy accessory that will help tame the hills when loaded down a bit. ActionTec titanium cogset, 8 speed, 11-36 including 11 tooth/lockring, and all spacers. I've used this set about 100 miles on fire trails (some steep for me) and 300 miles touring. Works flawlessly. So well, in fact, that Russel is making me a 11-38 cogset (yes, I'm a weenie but I love to climb up those coast range logging roads we have here in Oregon and this cogset has made all the difference). Would serve well for extended touring with heavy loads. Weight approximately 200gr. http://www.actiontec.us/ticog.htm $175 delivered to CONUS. [RBW] Re: Quick question re: SKS fender width
A while back I used the 35s on a bike with 28mm Michelin Hi-Lite Cross tires, and it worked just fine. Can't imagine Paselas not working if I had used them. Two factors come into play however; width obviously, but also the distance of the various bridges from the tire. On my bike, the chainstay, seatstay and fork crown were far enough away from the tire that I could slip in the fender and obtain decent concentricity. I tried a similar mix on another similar bike and could not make it work at all. Width factor was good in any case if that's your only concern - for me, the darn bridges got in the way. I suppose if it's a rivendell frame you're talking about it should be no problem, but why not move up to the 45s and have some room for "growth"? Yes, it was good to see the AHH mentioned.I believe someone may have posted something about this a few weeks ago. The Shimano XTR 970 9 speed cassette (224 g) is $270 for another example. IIRC, only the largest 4 cogs are Ti, where with Action Tec, all are Ti, and replaceable. Both are pricey, but if your budget allows, Action Tec has some nice goodies. For the budget conscious, the Sram PG-980 (382 g) gives great service and goes for only $69. The XTR costs $1.27 for each gram you save. [RBW] Re: an imitation or just a coincidence?
Color similarity with the Atlantis aside, what strikes me is the fact that the Sam Houston shares Sam Hilborne's significantly up-sloping top tube (not to mention cantilevers, gobs of tire clearance, and all- rounder aspirations). I don't know whether it's an "imitation" or just curiously "coincidental," but the similarities are clearly there in both moniker and design. [RBW] Re: an imitation or just a coincidence?
I agree with patrick. An Austin based frame-maker using a Texas- founding-father to name a frame can hardly be called an imitation-- since Sam Hillborne is actually much more of a made-up name. I actually found the up-slope geometry of the Sam H. very similar to my G3 Kogswell P/R, which of course came to the market earlier than the Sam H. Up-slope geometry is so common now, I don't think Riv can claim any IP on it. Kogswell and Rawland also have tons of tire clearance and are fender- and racks friendly. VCC make custom frames, from Austin, whereas Sam H. are production frames from Taiwan (there is nothing wrong with that). I see them as different options on the market. Incidentally, the wait on a VCC frame is only 4 weeks at the moment, and $1200 for a custom lugged frame made in the USA seems like a good deal. really miss when my romulus frame cost me $750 new from Riv merely 5 years ago, Franklyn On Nov 2, 2:21 pm, Aaron Thomas wrote: > Color similarity with the Atlantis aside, what strikes me is the fact > that the Sam Houston shares Sam Hilborne's significantly up-sloping > top tube (not to mention cantilevers, gobs of tire clearance, and all- > rounder aspirations). > > I don't know whether it's an "imitation" or just curiously > "coincidental," but the similarities are clearly there in both moniker > and design. > > On Nov 2, 1:57 pm, Dustin Sharp wrote: > > > I agree the color makes it look Atlantis like, but then again, > > Celeste/sea-foam whatever it is didn't exactly start with Rivendell. > > > D > > > > From: Patrick in VT > > > Reply-To: > > > Date: Mon, 2 Nov 2009 13:26:47 -0800 (PST) > > > To: RBW Owners Bunch > > > Subject: [RBW] Re: an imitation or just a coincidence? > > > > hmm . ... framebuilder in austin, TX designs and offers a handbuilt > > > frameset with choice of geometry/tubes depending on intended use - > > > touring, sport (whatever that means) and cx - and names the bike after > > > a texan hero. > > > > imitation or coincidence? not sure i'd use either of those words. > > > unless sam houston and sam hillborne are distant cousins or > > > something ;) --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Sloped Top Tube
A horizontal TT has long been part of the standard design. An upsloping TT allows the headtube to be higher relative to the saddle, which makes it easier to get the handlebar high enough. That's the Riv reasoning. I think a lot of other manufacturers do it for other reasons (style, weight, "stiffness", etc). [RBW] Re: FS ActionTec Titanium Cogset 11-36
Individual cogs in the ones I wear out are about $20 each. I have no intention of buying a complete cassette. Ti is a more expensive material and more difficult to machine than steel, and the volume this vendor is producing is a fraction of Shiimano, so I can see $20 for a cog. My expectation for Ti is to at least double the life of steel and probably more. dougP On Nov 2, 2:20 pm, PATRICK MOORE wrote: > On Mon, Nov 2, 2009 at 12:35 PM, Dustin Sharp wrote: > > > I agree, though compared to the almost $500 you can pay for a 2009 > > Campagnolo Super Record 11 Cassette, the ActionTec Cassettes almost seem > > like a bargain! > > First, a vociferation: Man! $500 for a cassette! Don't you need to start with a complete cassette, so that when the individual sprockets wear out you can replace them? I don't think they're meant to be replacement items for rehabilitating worn Shimano cassettes. Actually, given cost and availability, rather than rehabbing an 8, wouldn't you be better off switching to 7 speed? > Ti is a more expensive > material and more difficult to machine than steel, and the volume this > vendor is producing is a fraction of Shiimano, so I can see $20 for a > cog. [RBW] Homer, Fall and an awesome ride.
I got out today on my Hilsen for a lengthy ramble looping around the Sandy River and back to the Columbia River Gorge. It was an amazing day here that started out slightly overcast and hazy and turned into a spectacularly sunny day. The fall colors are pretty vibrant right now and the roads were empty which made for a relaxing ride although this particular ride had quite a bit of climbing. I don't have a cycling computer on my bike now so I'm not sure of the mileage, easily over 80. [RBW] Re: FS ActionTec Titanium Cogset 11-36
Lots of thoughtful discussion below to which I'll only ad this. My motivations for buying the titanium cogset (and for the next one I'll buy) were durability and versatility. First, being able to select each gear individually was a boon. I wanted the 36t lowest gear and I also wanted an 11t. Russel accommodates both. Durability matters, too. My LBS folks advised the advantage of the ActionTec titanium cogs (beyond weight) is their "shark tooth" design that uses the full thickness of metal to the end of each tooth. They explained that most steel cog designs weaken the teeth at the most crucial point with various ramps, thinning and grinding to facilitate easier shifting with 9 and 10 speed indexed systems. But I needed none of that - shifts are smooth and sure as it. As a note, we did experiment with the optional ActionTec idler wheel and found it unnecessary. So, if you need an extra-tough, off-road or steep hills and heavy loads over that really high pass cog setup this might meet your needs. Of course bragging about titanium parts to the carbon fiber crowd at the coffee shop is always fun, too. [RBW] Re: Sloped Top Tube
My Bruce Gordon Rock 'n Road is the first frame I have owned with a sloping top tube. What got me was how small frame looked when I unpacked it. As I built it, the frame appeared to be expanding before my eyes. The Bruce Gordon frame built up is significantly lighter and somewhat shorter overall than my Trek 728 was yet heel clearance with the large Ortlieb panniers is pretty close. I am not 100% with the aesthetics versus the Trek, but I am coming around on the practicalities. Hmmm, I'm not sure what to think. Funny how so many custom builders are trying to make bikes like the ones Rivendell has been producing for years.
