[RBW] Re: Whoa! Bombadil component alert!

2009-07-05 Thread Garth

As stated, Bullmoose bars disappeared for a good reason. No
adjustability in reach or angles. My '83 Stumpjumper had one, but
would-be thief tried damaged it in college. It was the best thing that
ever happened, as I got a Specialized Slingshot stem and bar instead.

Personally, the photo of the Bombadil with the stacked spacers looks
kinda silly, like a threadless wanna be. I'm surprised they made the
quill too short.

Looks are fine for show, but function trumps everything.

[RBW] Re: Whoa! Bombadil component alert!

2009-07-05 Thread JoelMatthews

But doesn't a lot depend on planning and intended use? Presumably
someone who shells out the dough for a Bombadil is going to put a lot
of thought into fit and function. If the Bullmoose work well for your
intended use then the lack of adjustability is not a problem.

My camper has a threaded stem and drop bars because I like to change
set up depending on where I am riding. However, I have seen a lot of
fellow tourers who have threadless stems with minimal spacers on them
(meaning no room for up and down adjustment) and flat bars. I guess
they can always flip or change the stem and put on different
handlebars. But you can always take the Bullmoose off and put on
another stem and bars as well.

I imagine Nitto Bullmoose are going to be rugged as heck. Probably a
good choice - if expensive and not for the many - for off road camping
imo.

Your whole trip looks awesome, I took a similar trip down the OR and
CA coast from Cannon Beach to San Diego with a old VW van in '92..
Not much faster than by bike ;-)

If I may offer a suggestion there is a great little coffee shop in
Cannon Beach called Bella Espresso, great for a cuppa and a baked good
-the cinniamon rolls are awesome.

Clear Skies, tail wind quiet roads - enjoy

[RBW] biggest tire on Hilsen?

2009-07-05 Thread Mike

I'm curious what the biggest tire is people have put on their Hilsen,
with and without fenders.

Anyone know what tire Grant is running on his Hilsen in the staff bike
photos on the Riv website? It's some kind of Schwalbe.

I guess I'm asking because I'm curious if it's possible to run these:

http://www.rivbike.com/products/list/tires_tubes_pumps_patches?a=1&page=all#product=10-068

I guess I could always just call Riv tomorrow, figued I'd ask here
first.

Just my opinion but the Hetre is the center of its own universe. The
only tire that could even dream of revolving in its golden orbit would
be a 40mm Pasela. Failing that, we have the CdlV which is alternately
praised in dulcet tones or vilified back to the primeval muck it came
from. I believe Schwalbe tires are quite serviceable and may even
reign supreme in the world of flat resistance and durability - that is
to say, in commuterland.

I've only run the JB's (33 1/3), but back when the Hilsen was just coming
out, GP sent some clearance info to me which is on this page -

scroll down a tad to see the photos and text. 37's seem not to be an issue.

hope that helps,

Amen, sister! The Hetre is amazing, and there's nothing else out there
even close. What a gem of a tire! Well worth the price, in my book.
(Of course, I'm not considering it for urban commuting service. For
that, I find the CdlV is excellent, and a great bargain.)

Not all commutes are through a no-mans' land of shrapnel and glass
fragments, and I've found the CdlV to be quite adequately flat-resistant
and long-wearing.

[RBW] Re: Nice 59.5 cm Rivendell Road on the block

2009-07-05 Thread Jim Cloud

The decal on the downtube of the bicycle on eBay is the same as that
on my Rivendell, which was purchased new by me in 1996 (I'd assume it
was also used in 1995). The only thing that looks unusual to me is
the Reynolds 531 decal on the forks, I'm relatively sure that Reynolds
753 was the only tubing used by Waterford on these early build bikes
(it certainly is what they used on my Riv).

[RBW] Re: Nice 59.5 cm Rivendell Road on the block

2009-07-05 Thread James Warren

About the Reynolds 531 tubing, I recall early Rivendell readers talking
about the frames being 753 with forks that used 531. (I'm not saying
that all came this way, but I do remember it.)

Furthermore, the Heron Touring I used to have was made at Waterford in
1998, and its frame and fork were both made of Reynolds 531, with
stickers and everything, so Waterford was still using 531.

Well, I was compelled to dig out the old RR's, and I found the
following in Reader #3, describing the forthcoming Rivendell frames,
back in 1995:

"Forks. The Reynolds 531 standard fork blade is legendary for its good
ride, strength...We've got the 753 steerer, because it's a little
lighter than the 531 steerer."

[RBW] Re: Nice 59.5 cm Rivendell Road on the block

2009-07-05 Thread Jim Cloud

Hi James - Yeah, now you got me looking at my old Riv Readers. I see
on page 31 of the #3 Reader ("Rivendell Frames") that Grant stated
they were using Reynold 531 for the forks, as you quoted. Gosh, if
I'd known that at the time I might have asked them to chrome the fork
on my Riv! (You can't chrome Reynold 753 because it was heat treated,
as you probably know).

[RBW] Re: Nice 59.5 cm Rivendell Road on the block

2009-07-05 Thread Bruce

Jim: This is the early Rivendell logo on my 1995 Road. This bike, btw has the
standard Waterford Head tube, that is, it lacks the headtube extension visible
on the green eBay bike. You can see the double ended spear looking thingamajig
horizontally backing the name.

The decal on the downtube of the bicycle on eBay is the same as that
on my Rivendell, which was purchased new by me in 1996 (I'd assume it
was also used in 1995).

[RBW] Re: biggest tire on Hilsen?

Take a look at the Rivendell website. In the "Read About It" section
for the Hilsen, the maximum tire size is stated as 40mm without
fenders, 38mm with.

Good luck.

Schwalbe are justifiably popular with distance tourers, mountain
bikers, and among specialty bike - folders, recumbents, adult trikes -
owners.

Schwalbe 650b offering is relatively recent. It will be interesting
to see whether it starts offering some of its mainstay tires as 650b.
Of course those would cost a lot more than the one Riv is selling now.

Actually just noticed Schwalbe is now selling a basic Marathin 650b.
No Supreme, Big Apple, Fat frank or Ultremo yet though.

[RBW] Re: Nice 59.5 cm Rivendell Road on the block

Other than being a larger size, the frame is essentially identical to
my own 1995 Road Std, right down to the Sherwood Forest green single-
color paint. Mine lacks the "Hadcrafted - Waterford Wisconsin" decal
but the Rivendell decal is trhe same as on mine. Looks original and
correct to me.

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe Middy 650B

2009-07-05 Thread Chris Halasz
I've been trying to hold out for a Marathon Supreme in 650b.

Given the market for $50+ (I have trouble paying auto tire prices for
bicycle tires, personally) 650b tires, I think Schwalbe missed the boat
manufacturing the ho-hum Middy that competes in price with the 105/Ultegra
standard Col de la Vie.

Street prices of the CdV are tough to beat for performance; I have trouble
justifying automobile tire prices on a bicycle -- wasn't there at least one
contributor on an ancillary list who traded in some of those very colorful
and expensive tires, returning to CdVs, sensing no discernable difference?

Tempted to trade up from CdVs to a more durable tire, (superstitions aside)
we've had phenomenal flat free performance these last six months with ours
(two Bleriots); that's about 2500 mi.

Then again, I'm eyeing the street price of Fatty Rumpkins ...

Cheers,

Chris

Ditto comparing it with my '96 A/R (even the same size, which in
retrospect is about 4 cm too short for me). The color, the decals,
the frame tubing, the lugs all seem correct. The lugged stem of
course came later than 1995.

Although as a point of accuracy, IIRC the lugs are not made by Henry
James. My recollection is that Richard Sachs had a hand in designing
them and they were cast in Taiwan.

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe Middy 650B

2009-07-05 Thread rob markwardt

I got about 3 months on the Schwalbe Marathons (650b) and I like them
a lot. I converted from CDlv's and to be honest I really can tell
much difference. My biggest gripe with the CDLVs was that they were a
major pain to mount and some of them appeared to have a built-in
wobble. The Marathons mount easily, ride comfortably, and (best of
all) no flats yet.
