The only perfect way of moving your Outlook Express 6 mailboxes to 
anything else is with an IMAP server.  Fortunately this is a fairly 
simple process because you can run a personal IMAP server on Red Hat 
fairly easily.

Procedure:
1) Install the "imap" package which contains POP and IMAP servers.
2) Make sure xinetd is running.
3) chkconfig imap on
   This will activate the IMAP server locally.
4) Create another local account, perhaps "tempuser".
5) Set Outlook Express 6 to connect to this IMAP server.  After you are 
connected create a few IMAP folders matching your Outlook Express folder 
names and copy all your mail to these folders.
6) Connect to this IMAP server from Mozilla and copy everything to local 
folders.

Simple?  If you need help with any step mentioned here, please ask the 
list again.

FTP issues

Hello, Everyone :)
I'm sure I need to give you more information than I have to assist you
in helping me with my problem, but I'll tell you what I do know (I know
more now than I did before I went to work today :)), and then please
feel free to tell me of any further information that you may need, and
I'll do my best to answer :)

Step 1: Open any of the two graphical FTP clients that I have installed
on my machine (gFTP 2.0.13 or kbear 2.0beta2) and attempt to download
any file.

Step 2: When the file finishes, in either gFTP or kbear, the file is not
saved to my machine, but in gFTP, the file finishes and it opens it up
in a viewer if it's a text file, and if it's, let's say a RPM file, it
will try to open it up in the viewer, but of course the viewer will
remain blank.  In kbear, before the file even begins to download, it
displays the "Open With" dialog instead of beginning the download (the
behavior between the two applications looks different on the surface,
but as you can see, it amounts to the same thing.)

In both of the cases in Step 2, no file is downloaded, I only get to
view, or attempt to view, the file when I run gFTP.  When I try kbear, I
only get the "Open With" dialog.  By the way, I just tried to download a
file in kbear, and after I chose, just to experiment, a text editor, to
open the RPM (just to get the download to start), it said it was saving
it it /tmp/kde-steve, and the file that was there (it was deleted by the
program) was the exact size of the RPM I downloaded, and the file name
ended this way: .rpm

The only other evidence that I have is that the last file I downloaded
sucessfully was the BigMem version of the updated kernel.  I got it from
updates.redhat.com  I have installed it successfully, and have had no
other problems since then.  I did try rebooting using the old kernel,
but I still have the same problems explained above.  I have read, write
and execute priveledges in my home directory, and I made sure that I am
the owner of it.  I could find nothing obvious in the setting/options
menus in kbear or gFTP.

I am running Red Hat 8 with an AMD Duron 650mhz processor, approx. 383
megabytes of RAM.  I have all the official updates installed, and I
believe I got them all from updates.redhat.com  Like I said earlier, if
you need any more information, feel free to ask :)  I am willing to
learn, and I am sorry if this problem turns out to be a no-brainer (I
did all I reasonably could before I contacted you.)

I just successfully downloaded a file from updates.redhat.com in
Konqueror, I even stopped and resumed the download, and it worked fine. 
When I tried Mozilla, and Netscape 7, I successfully downloaded files,
but they wouldn't let me stop and resume the transfer.  So the problem
still remains

You can try MyCC, developed by MySQL (www.mysql.com). Or you can set up 
OpenOffice to connecto to MySQL database, it would be enough for your

Can hear xawtv, but can't record audio

Hi,

I had a similar problem with sound which I eventually sorted out. 
Possibly your problem is the same as mine.

Basically, there seems to be an incompatability between aumix and the 
Gnome volume control.

I corrected the .aumixrc files as suggested (there's one in /etc, 
probably one in the users home directory and possibly one in /root). 
Sound recording (using audacity) then worked fine - for abouut 10 
seconds until I adjusted the volume control. Then audacity went silent 
again.

By trial and error I found that you can adjust the sliders on the volume 
control, but if you start it, or click on any of the boxes, then it 
immediately over-writes the .aumixrc files and leaves them in 
playback-only mode. That happens even if the box you click is the 
"record" box. Previously, with RH7.3, I had to click on the appropriate 
"record" box to activate sound recording, but this time it just kills 
the recording, so that got me quite confused.

This looks like a bug which should be reported. It certainly wasted a 
lot of my time.

In grip, go to Config->Rip, and see what file name is displayed in the
"Rip file format" box.  This will contain symbolic switches such as %A
(artist), %d (disc name) and %n (track name). "~" stands for your home
directory.

grip on-line help is available: open the Grip User's Guide from grip via
Help->Table of Contents, or point your browser to
/usr/share/gnome/help/grip/C/grip.html and follow the links for
"The Rip config tab" and "Configuration (%) switches".

FYI, if you're going to rip and encode CD music files, I strongly suggest
using Ogg Vorbis instead of mp3.  See http://www.vorbis.com for more info
on Ogg Vorbis.  It's a superior format to mp3, and is Open Source.

Ogg Vorbis support is available on RH 8.0 CDs:

CD-1:libogg-1.0-1.i386.rpm
CD-1:libogg-devel-1.0-1.i386.rpm
CD-1:libvorbis-1.0-1.i386.rpm
CD-1:libvorbis-devel-1.0-1.i386.rpm

You can use xmms, noatun, or ogg123 to play Ogg Vorbis files; these are all
on the RH 8.0 CDs.

When you get that message, you should have an "Ignore" option, which
tells it to leave the drivers installed and don't warn you if you boot
up without the printer.

I didn't check for dependancies but if you're installing fron cd you should
have everything needed.

D-Link AirPro support (was Re: PC Card problems.)

I'll expand on Michael's msg to ask about Linux/RH8 support for either
of D-Link's latest AirPro wireless cards:

   DWL-650+ (802.11b - 11 Mbps)
   DWL-A650 (802.11a - 54 Mbps).

These may not share the NS8390 chipset used in the DE-650 cards. At
least [Activate] in 'neat' fails in my IBM Thinkpad A22p.

I'm also looking for support info on the companion D-Link DI-754 access
point. With an optional DWL-650+ card inserted in its cardbus slot, this
AP supports 802.11a and 802.11b wireless links simultaneously.

Yes, you're right, I mean Kudzu, not anaconda.

And that little ignore button is the problem, not the solution. I don't need 
the constant detect/redetect of hardware on my system. I think I may just 
disable it in all run levels, so that I can run it manually if I change 
hardware.

FWIW, all's fine here with mc-4.5.55-12i from 8.0.  I just hit view (F3) to see

I just had a flash of inspiration and I looked for the gFTP
configuration file in my home directory, to see if anything was
obviously amiss, when I located the following:

When I edited the file and changed the "0" to "2", voila!, my problem
was fixed :)  When I looked for the configuration file for kbear, I
found nothing obviously wrong in it, so I just deleted it, and when I
started kbear back up, it worked correctly also :)  But I guess I'm
still curious: why did the setting related to this issue change in both
applications, when I did nothing to change it.  It almost appears to
have changed on it's own :(  My wife doesn't use Linux on our computer,
and no one else has access to it, so it's a mystery  I do have a
suspicion that it may have been done by our cat Linus (pronounced
Lee-nus.  Guess who we named him after :))

Sorry to have bothered you :), I guess I need to have more confidence in
my investigative abilities.  That, and my brother Dave, our families
resident Linux guru called me a genius once :)

Anyway, if anyone has any ideas about how that setting got changed in
both apps, please let me know.

Reminds me of the story about the help desk tech who instructed a caller

server port.

This allows me to connect my printer to this device, and machines
connected to it via cable or wireless can print to the common printer.

D-Link provides drives for all flavors of Windoze, but I haven;t found
anything for Linux.

Has anyone figured out how to do this with this hardware under Linux (RH
8.0 here).

postgres doesn't have a password unless you set one.  Only root can,
therefore:
su postgres -c psql
or:
su postgres -c "createuser -d username"

Just copy them over while running Linux into your Linux Mozilla Mail
folder. I think the filesystem driver for VFAT32 should do the DOS2Unix
conversion automatically.

database gui frontend

Hi,
I am trying to use pgAccess to build a databse of my library.
I am unable to use it, however, because I am unable to 
create a postgres user.  when I try to "su postgres"
I can not get in.  I have tried my root password, no password,
and "postgres" as password.  It is obvious that the user "postgres" was created during 
the install (default part of RH 8.0 install) but I have no idea
what the password is.  How do I alter that?

I have also tried MysqlCC, but there I get server errors, which confounds me because I 
am not trying to build a database on a server, but simply on my desktop machine.  I 
only wish to have access to it myself from here.
I have used M$Access to build databases for school, grades, library catalogs, etc, and 
that is the only experience I have with databases.  I want a tool that will allow me 
that kind of ease of use.  I thought I found two such tools but I can;t seem to use 
them.  So, I have having no luck using the two database applications on here (postgres 
or MySql).  Someone has suggested that I use OpenOffice to create a database, but that 
is the one application that Star has the OO does not.

I am also having wine issues, but I don't even know where to start to ask questions.  
Once more, I am working with the default setup from install, but it appears I am 
having path issues or something.  So I have been unable to use wine at all.  I am 
afraid that the HowTo at winehq doesn't really help.  Will HowTo's ever be written in 
English?

then when you are root
su postgres

When you are su'd to root, then you can su to any user without a
password.

Well, obviously there is something very fundamental that I don't understand.  I have 
tried three different front ends now (Mysqlcc, pgaccess and tora), and all without 
avail, because they are all looking for postgres or mysql on a g to build the database 
on the same box.  It'snot a server, it's a desktop workstation.  I can build a db on a 
doze machine without a server (access) and can build one on my iBook with appleworks 
without a server, why must I set a server (totally lost on what that entails) in order 
to build a simple little db on the nix box? I only have two machines, and neither of 
them is a server, just the nix box and the iBook.
I just don't get it...why are these programs looking for a server/trying to signb into 
one?  I have used Access at school to catalog books, keep grades, etc, without any 
server, all on one box without signing into a server.  Can't I do that here?

Another UTF-8 /Perl problem?

I have just tried to use muttprofile (
http://www.iki.fi/martti.rahkila/mutt/) with the stock mutt included
in Psyche, running inside an xterm. Basically, it is a Perl script
to be ran inside mutt to change some settings interactively. When I run
the command inside mutt (but directly from xterm prompt is the same
thing) this is what shows on the screen:

Instead of unplugging and removing the battery, try holding down the
power button for >4 or 5 seconds, or until something happens.  This
seems to be a universal laptop 'hard off'.  (some pc's do it too, mine
is configurable in the bios)  I know this doesn't answer your question,
but it may make your reboots quicker :)

No can do... this functionality (sleep with swap to disk) is new to
the 2.5.x development kernels, so you won't see this until the 2.6.x
production kernels start to arrive.

Sony laptops seem to have problems 'coming back to life' with the power
slide (or the power button, if that is what the newer Vaios use.)
Sometimes my Vaio freezes solid when I'm experimenting with stuff and
not even holding the power slide to 'on' for a while will hard-reset it.
Taking the battery out is the only option that works.

This brings up the update x-window.  Tried to log in and was told that
my account and password was already claimed ... duh.  I had entered it
on a previous visit.

I am trying to log in to run the recommended security update.

Is it possible the RH server is just overwhelmed and is shipping out
bogus error messages?

USB Mouse Support In Compiled Kernel

If you install the kernel-source-2.4.18-18.8.0.i386.rpm and compile the
kernel with a seemingly unrelated change (example: changing only the
processor option from Pentium II to Pentium III in menuconfig), and
reboot with the new kernel, a USB mouse will no longer work.

This has been true of all the kernels packaged for Red Hat 8.0.Methinks
something was overlooked.

The stock kernels work fine with USB mice.

A recompile for any reason will disable said USB mouse.

I went to Ximnian.com about a month ago and downloaded red carpet. When
I tried to run it, I got an error message saying something to the effect
of "Red Hat 8.0 doesn't support this version of red carpet."

I went again and downloaded the new version that says it's meant for
8.0. When I follow the instructions to try to install it, it tells me
that it is already installed. When I run "red-carpet" I get prompted for
my root password and nothing happens.

Please help me with this. Should I continue to try to use Red Carpet or
should I seek another way to keep my machine updated?

RPM uninstall help

Greetings,
Perhaps you can help me with a quandry I'm in.  I'm trying to intall the
latest mplayer packages (mplayer-0.90pre10-1.i686.rpm and it's companion
files mplayer-common, mplayer-gui, etc.) and I've tried to erase the
above files.  In my systems log, it shows the
mplayer-0.90pre9-1.i386.rpm as being installed, but when I go to
uninstall it from the command line, it says it does not exist.  I've
checked spelling, etc and see no errors.  I'm a linux newbie, and I'm
sure I'm overlooking something blatantly obvious, but any insight you
can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I downloaded and installed as root to /usr/lib/RealPlay9. I was able to play audio 
feeds, but NOT video... maybe it's because I still have
Realplayer8 installed?

Only pulls stuff from the RH website. One cannot take advantage of local
mirrors.

In contrast, there are at least two Debian mirrors within free download

Then install the new version with rpm -Uvh red-carpet. I am curious, are 
the packages the same version number? Have you tried doing rpm -Uvh

All you will need to do is type 'rpm -e mplayer' or 'rpm -e mplayer*' to

I had that problem too.  I really encourage you to use the redhat rpms
from http://people.redhat.com/~katzj/evolution/RPMS/
but if you really want red-carpet, I found the way around this was to:
run it from a terminal (in foreground, ie. no '&')
enter password when prompted from password box
you will probably now see another password prompt on the terminal, but
this can be ignored.  Hit enter a few times, or try ctrl-z and 'bg'.  I
have no idea why it behaves like this, but I had to do some wierd things
to get it to start...

I believe the understanding problem lies in the fact that with MS Access,
you get the database server and a very nice client in one package.  With
MySQL or Postgres, you have to run the database server program before you
can build a create your database with a client program.  I'm currently using
mysqlcc as the client for MySQL.  In my opinion, it doesn't come close to
Access's ease of use (no flames please).  On the other hand, I don't have
have to worry about the database format changing with every new release of
MySQL the way it does with Access.

Thanks to each of you, I have this *almost* solved.  :-)The last 
part is still a mystery to me, because I'm a Linux (and Mozilla) newbie. 
Here's my progress:

(1) I imported the Outlook Express 6 Address Book and Mail, into Mozilla 
Mail 1.1, in Windows.

(2) Then, I imported the Address Book from Mozilla Mail 1.1 on Windows, 
into Mozilla Mail 1.0.1 on Psyche, without any problem.

(3) Here's the remaining problem: When I try to Import the Mail 
Messages, from Mozilla Mail 1.1 on Windows, into Mozilla Mail 1.0.1 on 
Psyche, I run into a dead end, because the Import routine is looking for 
Communicator 4.x, to Import from, and nothing else, so it dies there.

Question: Which Mozilla Mail 1.1 Message files do I need to copy and 
where should I copy them to, to use them for Mozilla Mail 1.0.1 on Psyche?

This may be OT, since it is Mozilla related,  but I bet a lot of other 
people are trying to accomplish the same thing I am.

i810/i815 XFree in 16 bit sometimes has corrupted vertical lines

A friend tells me that he's read somewhere that the i81x series cards have 
problems in 16 bit mode with vertical stripes sometimes, and I see this 
often on my Sony SRX87 (which otherwise works *great* with linux..  someday 
I'll write up a little summary..  Meant to do it while I was setting it 
up)..  When I go to 24 bit the artifacts disapear, but so does my bzflag and 
the few other little 3d things I enjoy :(

Anyone know a workaround, a version to try, maybe X flags, etc, that might 
fix this problem?  I'm back and forth about putting up with the lines here 
and there sometimes and having 3d, or no lines and no 3d.

To be clear, what happens is it seems some text boxes, my panels top border, 
sometimes window titles, etc, get maybe 4-5 pixel-wide lines every 20-30 
pixels..  The lines are wierd colors and texture, but consistant.  Seems to 
appear most in Mozilla's text URL input box, top of KDE's panel, sometimes 
on the top border of window titles, etc..  Rarely goes through the entire 
screen, in text, etc..  Just the edges of things.

Any suggestions?

Rebuild a new initrd (with mkinitrd) and include the fb driver - it
will be preloaded with the kernel (and other modules, eg, ext3).

Then check the kernel docs (eg, in Documentation/fb/) to see what
kernel parameters you need to set it.  It is likely to look
something like "video=fbdriver:1280x1024-8@75" (where "fbdriver"
refers to your framebuffer driver).

Not a flame but this is like comparing a pocketknife with a surgical
scalpel.

Sure..the pocketknife cuts just as the scalpel does...but you wouldn't
want to perform surgery with a pocketknife either!

I personally don't believe that MySQL or PGSQL were meant for anything
other than the backend.

For X forwarding a connection back, a 'sudo su -' does not
carry the proper magic cookie back, particularly across
varying configurations of several intermediate hosts.  It is
fragile enough that John's method of sticking with ssh
forwarding turns out to work substantially better than the 'su
-' approach.  

It should not matter, in theory, but there is that pesky
distance between theory and practice.

Doesn't it have a 'reset' button? On my old N505VE there's a little hole 
underneath the machine which you push an unbent paperclip through and it'll 
switch off machine.

Answer: yes, except I use new-kernel-pkg after copying bzImage and
System.map to boot, then doing make modules_install. I do have an initrd
(and one gets generated.)

Good RedHat 8.0 Books

I'm looking into getting some good books on 8.0.  Does anybody have any
suggestions?  I'm looking for books that tell me general usage stuff i'm
running 8.0 on a laptop and this is my first time w/ linux GUI, had a
little command line before this in school (only one semester).  I still
have my textbooks from that class though.  (O'Reilly's Linux in a
nutshell  and a Practical Guide to Linux by Mark Sobell.

GNOME menus update

Hi,

An update on the menus saga.

First, the bad news. The menu editing added to GNOME 2.0.2 modified
the vfolder format somewhat such that it's incompatible with what
shipped in 8.0 (it would break KDE). As a result, just recompiling a
new gnome-panel version is pretty far from a shippable menu editing
errata; there's a good bit of code reworking required. (No I'm not
happy about this; the code should not have been written in a
GNOME-specific way, though I should have been paying more attention to
be sure it wasn't, I was busy doing 8.0 at the time. :-/)

So, what now.

In an effort to fix this problem only one more time, I posted the
following proposal which modifies vfolders in response to comments
from KDE and WINE developers:

So far response is favorable, as seen in the xdg-list thread. I'm
hoping that as a result we can nail down this way of doing menus
(getting the proper code upstream for both GNOME and KDE) and stop
having to revisit this issue.

I spent most of the weekend working on an implementation of the new
proposal, the implementation is around half done I think.

I'll get this code working as soon as I can, and we'll see what

has some good docs.

What does that have to do with a local box?  I'm talking on a single
box, I just don't see how ssh to yourself is better than su -

No boot after updating to kernel 2.4.18-18.8.0.athlon

Hello all,

Just a warning in case anyone else encounters this problem.

After downloading and installing the new kernel update ,
kernel-2.4.18-18.8.0.athlon.rpm, on reboot I was greeted by a text
prompt with just the word GRUB. It would not take any keyboard input at
the prompt. I ended up booting in rescue mode and reinstalling grub.

The new kernel rpm did update /etc/grub.conf, but it apparently in some
way screwed up grub. Might have been just a fluke, but I thought had
better warn everyone about what happened. Strange. :-P
