hello,
linux 9.0 does not detect SATA HDD. Please anyone could give reason for this ?
And also work around for this
1 option I tried was seting BIOS to legacy mode from enhanced but
eventually the HDD was not detected .
being a SATA HDD it requires enhanced mode only .
motherboard intel 865GBF.

any other options and suggestions are invited.
Rgds
Sudhanshu K.
Dear Sudhanshu,
What the hell is Linux 9.0 ???
Have you checked the hardware compatibility list before trying out
installation?

Mandrake 10 supports SATA and even h/w RAID. The intel server board is also
supported.

I may sound rude, but at least take some efforts to
A. know the terminologies properly
B. make some efforts to check out the capabilities and requirements of the
distro which you want to use.
C. know that there is no such thing as linux 9 or linux 10. Clear off this
misconception of associating Redhat distro as Linux. It is just one of the
distros amongst so many others ( & probably better )
D. Get associated more with PLUG and/or other LUGs for better understanding
of free and/or OS software (philosophy or otherwise)

[PLUG] Volunteers needed

2004-10-25 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Hi,
We need volunteers for some installation/setup activity for a school near
Pune (about 30 kms- Paud/Pirangut). There will be about 15 PCs ( Pentium
II/III ) to be installed and networked.

We are likely to install FREEDUC on these PCs. However, you can also
suggest other distros (please justify the same)

This project is handled by one of our PLUG members Mr. ANAND KULKARNI (
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ) from another NGO "Sarvangin Vikas Sanstha". Their
objective is to "motivate computer literacy in the weaker section of the
society". PLUG is helping them in getting volunteers, equipment. softwares
etc.

This is the first activity they are starting and we are going to support it.
So, please let us know if anyone wants to help in this project as volnteer
or by giving equipment ( PCs, LAN cards, cables, switch/Hub etc)

You can send mails OFFLIST to Anand or to me. Or else you can call him on
9422515760 or to me on 9822063831.

Thanks in advance.

I dont know what you mean. But lets face the fact. MS
has 'integrated' IE in the kernel of OS. The IE engine
is used by many s/ws like ms office. IE hangs and the
complete OS hangs. Try opening about 40-50 links in
new ie window and the os gdi resources reaches nadir,
faulting the kernel32 or sometimes the gdi32 dll.
Try to watch a movie cd with has scratches and mplayer
hangs bringing the os down w/ it. (I think red hat 7
or something had similar prob. I remember xmms
hanging, bringing xserver down w/ it. I know that the
os is still runing, but for the desktop user windows
manager is the interface he's interested in and is the
os for him.)
Ofcourse you can end task the programmes and the os
restores, but after a min or so of frustration. So the
best soln is use other s/ws which does not use the ie
engine at all. And if those are free, with less system
space and more efficient, then why not go for it? :)

I think this thread is going nowhere related to Linux.
Can we stop further mails on this thread.

I have a linux 7.2 box. When I try to use outlook express on windows
client to pop all the mails from a user account, it is very slow.
Moreover, it gives time out error for any mail that has any attachment
even in some kb. I have tried to increase the time out also. But invain.
The same outlook express, in same lan n/w, pops up mail from solaris mail
server easily. For some users outlook express is must. So, how this
problem can be solved ?
Regards,
-Sudhanshu
IS THIS A WINDOWS SUPPORT MAILING LIST?
PUTTING A LINE SAYING "I HAVE A LINUX 7.2 BOX" DOES NOT QUALIFY TO WRITE
ANYTHING FURTHER ON NON-FREE SOFTWARE. ( THERE ITSELF IS A MISTAKE. THERE
IS NO SUCH THING AS LINUX 7.2 )

DONT WASTE YOURS AND OTHERS TIME AND BANDWIDTH BY WRITING LIKE THIS.
IF OUTLOOK IS MUST FOR SOME OF YOUR USERS ,PLEASE GO AND ASK SUPPORT FROM
MICROSOFT OR ANY OTHER SUCH GROUPS.

There is a school "Chhatrapati Shivaji Vidyalay" in the Paud village. It
is around 25km from Kothrud area. There are around 1100 poor students take
education from 5th to 11th Standard.

The school has already have 12 computers and we have already provided them
computer furniture for the lab setup. The electric points are ready..only
we are left with networking and LINUX installation.

For the same, we require:
1) 16 port switch (Rs. 3500/-)
2) 12 LAN cards, (350*12 = Rs.4200/-)
3) 80 meter cable (10*80 = Rs. 800/-)
The total cost of this will be around Rs. 9000/- (including switch, LAN
cards, cable etc..)

How you can help us?
1) If you are from hardware and networking background, you can help us in
actual establishing networking setup.
2) If you are aware about LINUX installation and different LINUX vendors
like Mandrake, SUSE, RedHAT etc.. you can help in installation
3) Since, the cost will be around Rs.9000/-, if you want to contribute
something, you are welcome for the same.

We want to execute this activity on coming Saturday / Sunday. It will take
aroung 5 hrs.

It is important to inform you that this project will provide free computer
education to 1100 poor students on the LINUX platform.
If you have any further query, feel free to contact.

waiting for the reply.

The free 'Download' edition (public access) should come out (to mirrors
etc) after around Nov 18-20. (the article mentions 3 weeks waiting period)

We have people on the list who are members of MandrakeClub. They do have
immediate access to the CD images currently available only to the members.
You have correctly said that the ISO images will be available openly to all
after some days.

I talked to some people today and it is very much likely that we will get
"MDK10.1 official" ready with us in next 2-3 days.

Most likely, I will be asking for booking in the meeting confirmation mail.

are quite a few Mandrake Club members on the list. Has the PLUG recieved a
copy as yet?

/Sumeet

Hi,
Finally, after a lot of jugglery, we could get MDK10.1 official. Right now
first 2 CDs are ready and remaining will be available in a few days. I
tested it from the 2 CDs.

The installation is a typical Mandrake installation which is very simple
and neat. The messages shown during the installation are also nice and
improved compared to earlier versions.

Blue tooth and other things required typically for Laptops are built in
supported.

MCC has some changes but for good.
Samba is amazingly fast.
It has got KDE3.2 and gnome 2.6. Optionally, on CD4, KDE3.3 is also available.
Best part is OO1.1.3 which is pretty fast while starting and even later on
while opening new/existing files. It gives some more nice user friendly
options like " use native OO file formats or MSOffice file formats" etc.

The desktop resolution changing tool is also very nice and handy. I could
easily switch between 1920 X 1440 to 640X480. btw, the Xserver is from X.org.

In general, MDK10.1 official works well, nice and clean.
Worth switching over to it.
And dont miss the Super Tux game in the distro. :-)
For general overview about installation and other tips visit here:
http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/review101.html

We also have a nice Live CD "VigyaanCD". (www.vigyaancd.org)
Amazing distro for BIO-chemical people. Being a knoppix based distro, it
works well off the CD itself. The applications are also nice looking(I cant
understand a single thing from BIO/Chem :-( )

Worth trying this CD.
Vigyaancd is currently available with us. MDK10.1 official will take a few
more days to be available. Please wait till that time.

[PLUG] Live CD for engineering students

2004-11-22 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Hi,
For the last few days/weeks, in our real-life informal katta meetings, we
are talking about creating a live CD specifically for engineering college
students. Manas was giving names of lots of softwares which are very useful
for the students.(and they work better than their windows equivalents)

Can we take up this project of making a live CD for engineering students?
We can make a Special Interest group for this purpose.
currently, most of the engineering students will be busy in their exams but
most of the fresh engineers can help in this.

At least , to start off, we can make a list of free/OS softwares for
electrical/electronics/telecom students. this list can include softwares
for Matlab equivalents, PCB designing, Fourier analysis, DSP applications,
circuit analysis etc.

Any takers?

Hi all,
An idea to make the monthly meetings more effective.
Someone should present a small( < 15-20 mins) presentation/demo of any
software (Eg. Gaim, Kontact, Mozilla, K3b, etc etc any free software for that
matter)
Basically the presentation should concentrate on installation and the use of
software.
More importantly, distribute the software in the form of binaries, sources
with Documentation to the people on the spot after the meeting. People can
come with their own CD, CD-RW or USB drives.
Additional resources required for this are a CD writer at the PLUG meeting,
enthusiastic people wanting to share knowledge about software and a
coordinator.
I will be happy to volunteer for this kind of effort.
--
http://dengineer.blogspot.com
Hi,
As said by Shridhar and others, we do arrange some techie
talks/demo/presentations in the plug meetings. Please check out the events
page on PLUG website to get some idea.

Every time when I send meeting confirmation mail, I mention about the same
thing- if anyone wants to talk- Somehow nobody responds to this. Just a few
times people responded positively but never turned up at the meeting. :-(

About your other suggestion of CD-writing on the spot; I dont think it is
worth it. People may come up with different requirements and we may not be
able to get bandwidth to download the stuff online and burn the CDs
immediately.

We can probably announce to send requirements beforehand and burn the CDs
accordingly and get them to the meetings.

Well, again if those people don't turn up, your efforts are wasted :-(
PLUG appreciates and encourages your willingness for CD writing. That is a
regular and unending task we have.

If you and others can volunteer for CD writing, we are willing to give you
that job.

Volunteers, please remember that responsibility and accountability go
together. If you take up that properly , authority will come to you
automatically.

Red Carpet is not a replacement for YaST. It just happens to be a software
update tool from Ximian Desktop. YaST is still a part of Novell Linux Desktop
9 and is available from the Administrator Settings.
BTW, NLD 9 isnt really an enthusiast's distro. It is more of a corporate
desktop, much like RHL Desktop. It is much thinner on packages than Suse9.2
which itself is pretty thin on apps in the absence of regulars like Quanta+,
kuickshow, XFCE, mplayer etc... Also, the licensing is something that I need
to read about, since it ships with some commercial apps like the Citrix ICA
Client. The per seat licensing cost, I believe is $50.00. The PLUG can
possibly get someone from Onward Novell to demonstrate NLD 9, but I doubt
whether distribution would be possible, though I am still to refer to the
licensing docs..
Yes the PLUG can distribute Suse9.2 Pro discs since there are absolutely no
licensing issues involved.

Red carpet is from Ximian and YAST is from SUSE. These companies were taken
over by Novell.

Both the products have absolutely different functionality.
Regarding copying of SUSE CDs, if anyone can give us some authoritative
information about copying and redistributing of SUSE and/or other Novell
products (-probably with some URLS from the website), we will be able to
distribute them.

Same thing for Red Hat Products.
We dont want to go into problems on licensing/distribution and Trade Marks
and IPR issues.

Meanwhile people can go to the free software CDs page on the plug
website(currently in updation stage) and add your inputs if you have any
other CDs which ar enot mentioned in the list.

If you want I can bring the 4th CD to the meet and you could copy it
there. If
there is a CD-Writer available.

BTW, I wanted to demonstrate a package called emovix, that might excite a few
desktop users. Would there be a computer with a CD-Writer available at the
meet?

Sumeet,
If you can give 4th CD on Friday, we can make copies of it and give it in
the distro alongwith the other 3 CDs.

CD drive will be available. CD writer , not very sure. Deendra is getting
one for the meeting.

Lets try to accommodate emovix demo too.

Hmm,
So who has the bleeding edge one ? Since I want the latest one (
which also have gnome 2.8.x )
Pranav has agreed to burn his set for me. If ur one is more latest
maybe I can ask him to not to burn , if u can burn me the latest. ( I
typically wanted the ISO's themselves, to try making a local
repository & also burn CDs later if needed ).
Sorry for the cc's but realized my plug mosts are getting delayed due
to moderation!.

[PLUG] Who will sign-up for BSNL's new DataOne broadband service?

Subject: [PLUG] Who will sign-up for BSNL's new DataOne broadband service?
Hi,
Anyone here interested or planning to sign-up for BSNL's new home
plans for DataOne ADSL 2+ broadband?
Any info on how to connect Linux? Will it be a DHCP IP or some
problematic dialup procedure?
Just curious, since Im also thinking about getting the 512k (5gb) or
1mbps (10gb) connection ASAP or as soon as its available to me!
Cheers,
Vishal
Hi,
this is my story about my enquiry regarding the BSNL broadband service. You
may consider these facts to take your decision.

To start off, I visited the URL mentioned in some mail earlier on the list.
It does not contain any info regarding Linux support or any othe rtechnical
info I wanted to know.

So, I called up 1500 (thats the BSNL call centre number) and started
enquiring about some technical things. The first shock I got was "the
person saying your normal 33.6k dialup modem should be fine for the
broadband connection. I dont have to get any other modem." Obviously it was
wrong, and I told him to give the call to any other senior, technical
person. Somebody else talked to me but was even more confused after getting
my simple technical questions( do you require a dialer, is it available on
linuxetc...) So he directed me to another call centre no specifically
for internet support.

I called up there and got a reply that they dont know anything about
broadband and gave another no of Karve Road exchange. Finally, instead of
calling up, I went to fill up the form and getthe technical queries
answered. Well, the answeres I got were absolutely crazy ( eg: you will get
everything in the internet we provide). The person doesnt seem to know
anything other than M$window$. Neither they have any info about any dialer
required and/or if it is supported on linux.

Finally, I was fade up, just filled up the form and went off.
Well, this obviously means that they dony have the slightest knowledge on
technical things and we can expect the same troublesome sancharnet or DIAS
service.

Anyway, Rs. 500/- per month for the package they are offering could be
worth considering just for the cost benefits.

-Sudhanwa
ps: I got a call today and they actually checked something on the line for
broadband connection. thats to fast...for BSNL to respond...

[PLUG] Pune having the highest Linux awareness in India

2005-02-13 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Hi,
Pune opens source code to Red Hat
And when it comes from Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mathew Szulik,
there is hardly any doubt as to where India centre stands in Red Hat's
global plans. ''Pune centre will do strategic engineering work (for further
evolution of Linux). The centre will develop new products in storage,
systems and network management,'' Szulik said, adding the present headcount
of 30 will be ramped up to 150 soon.

Sure, said Szulik, who divulged that Pune has the highest Linux awareness
in India and a big pool of professionals trained in the open source
technology. ''It's the vibrant workforce, well-versed with Linux
applications, that made us select Pune to innovate,'' he said.

Read the article here:

[PLUG] Learning Linux Operating System

Friends,
At present I am using WindowsXP OS with my 1.7GB/256MB/40GB computer.
Knowing my interest in Linux My brother in law presented me a set of 4 CD's
of Mandrake 10, which he brought from the recently held Exhibition in Pune.
In the leaflet provided along with the CD's, it is mentioned that
" Even it is possible to install the distribution to your hard disk, it is
not necessary to install. You can run a complete Linux System directly from
the CD."
I have run all four CD's and was unable to find how to run Linux System from
CD, without installing.
I don't want to install Linux System right now in my hard disc.
It will be of great help to me, if you let me know how to run Linux without
installing.
I have visited your site www.plug.org and also subscribed to your mailing
list.
As I am living in Mumbai, it is not possible for me to attend the course
conducted at Symbiosis in Pune.
I will be highly obliged, if you let me know, of any similar activities
carried out in Mumbai.
Dear Jagdish Chandra,
Being a newbie to the linux world, I can understand your difficulties.
The CDs you received are not Live CDs. Please visit the plug website
(http://plug.org.in/software.php) again and see the list of CDs we have.
Mandrake 10.x is not live CD. Probably you dont know this as you have not
interacted with the people while booking the CDs. Otherwise, they would
have suggested you as per your needs.

The leaflet provided with the CDs was given with all types of CDs we gave
that time. That was given to facilitate the users to install the
distributions OR run the LIVE CDs. The statement you mentioned is
specifically meant for Live CDs eg. Knoppix. If you want any live CDs, you
can book them again or you can get it from Mumbai Linux users group people.

For the benefit of others, here is the copy-paste of the leaflet contents..

You may read the articles on the following websites before installing your
GNU/Linux distribution on your system.

For Mandrake distributions :

For Fedora distributions :

http://www.bitbenderforums.com/vb22/showthread.php?postid=356909
You can also refer to the official websites of those projects.
Live CDs are bootable CDs. Even if it is possible to install the
distribution on your hard disk, it is not necessary to install. You can run
a complete Linux system directly from the CD.

For any more queries, post them on the PLUG mailing list to get answers
from other people on the list. Visit PLUG website

You will not be able to send your mail without subscribing.

You could have mentioned this in the first place, that it is not a
joke, seeing that it's so close to April 1 and since you "expected
some such kind of mail on the list"...
( I'm in Bangalore now anyways, avoiding the Bangalore LUG meetings 8-P )

Well, I also expected this kind of mail from some other fool (refer fool's

Probably you are not a fool by that definition.

Anything you write on 1st April would have the same consequences..
Its sad to know how people can not differentiate between serious matter and

Hi,
Does anybody on this list hold LPI certification?
I was thinking of going for it.
I am working with linux for a year or so but only as a user and not
administrator.
I want a certification which is suitable for a newbie to start off as a
junior system administrator.

RHCE seems a bit advanced and also has a lab test.
I have no idea about how much these certifications hold value in the job
market.
Your suggestions/opinions are most welcomed.

Thanks,
Yogesh
I dont think anybody is LPI certified here. As such, LPI is new to India
and there is hardly any awareness of LPI.

If you think RHCE is tough, LPI will be even harder
Well, if we have enough people who are willing to appear for the LPI exams,
we can possibly arrange the LPI tests locally in Pune.

Mandrake has changed its name to Mandriva. (???)

I found this comment from their website very interesting:
..By adopting a new name, we eliminate the liability attached to the
Mandrakesoft name .

No idea what they mean by it...

[PLUG] Remembering Mr. Vijay (Dada) Deval

2005-04-13 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Dear Pluggies,
On 13th April 2003, Vijay Deval (fondly called as Dada Deval) passed away.
We will always remember him for his contribution to PLUG and to the
Free/Open source software community.

He was actively involved in PLUG activities. He attended almost all the
PLUG meetings, volunteered in exhibition, even got his own PCs for the
exhibition and talked to people regarding their enquiries. All this at the
age of around 60.

He was a mentor to many pluggies and he remains our inspiration even today.
May God bless his soul with peace.
~~~
The Live CD which we are creating (its almost done.) for
electrical-electronics people and which is being circulated for
testing/trials will be dedicated to Vijay Deval.
Webpages for the CD and other related matter are being worked out.
Dada Deval was an Electrical,mechanical engineer himself and was involved
in electroplating and other similar business activities.
~~~

-Sudhanwa Jogalekar
ps: For information of new people on the list: Vijay Deval (Fondly known as
Dada) was the first Chairman of PLUG Trust.

[PLUG] Unrestricted access to websites on Dataone

Hi,
Of late I have seen that certain websites are inaccessible with BSNL's
Dataone
Broadband connection. I havent been able to access blogger.com,
geocities.com, yahoogroups and many others, on my connection. No, I am not
behind a firewall. Has someone else experienced the same problems? Also, does
anyone have the url where we can change our passwords for the connection?

/Sumeet

Hi,
I think Dataone gives you dynamic ip in the range of 59.something. It seems
this is a new IP range alloted and many of the websites are probably
blocking it.

Another problem is the DNS server. It does not reflect the entries properly
and it timeouts many times.

Somehow, I am not impressed with Dataone service. Try pinging your own IP
address and see how slow the response is. From your IP address, it takes
some 8-10 hops to reach to backbone in Mumbai :-(
