Re: C Crane pocket radio
hi: I also have one of these. the only things you cannot do is set the clock and alarm, and set the weather alert for the options of 4, 8, and 16 hour alert settings. you can turn on the the weather alert, though. hope this helps. p.s. I am also very satisfied with this radio. howard wolcott -- From: "Grant E. Metcalf" Sent: Saturday, July 27, 2013 11:43 AM To: Subject: C Crane pocket radio I bought one of the C Crane pocket radios and am satisfied with its performance. The price was $59 US plus shipping and California sales tax. It has lots of buttons which are easily identified. the top button on the right side of the radio selects AM, FM, and the weather band. The on/off button, volume wheel and earphone jack are on the very top. On the face of the radio you will find 2 vertical buttons which move up and down the dial. There are 5 buttons you can use to pre-select your preferred frequencies. Once you have located a station you hold down one of the 5 buttons for 2 seconds until you hear a beep and then repeat the process for the next station you want. There are more buttons and functions which I still don't understand and/or need at the moment. The sound is acceptable to my old ears. There is a 60 day return policy if you decide you do not want this radio. Hope this is helpful. - Grant Bartimaeus Alliance of the Blind, Inc. I'll give more details on the radio in the future, here are some initial impressions to wet your appetite. The PL660 is somewhat smaller than the PL880 and doesn't have the nice sounding speaker of the PL880 but it does have excellent short wave reception capabilities which are - in my view - the main selling point of this radio. The Sync Detection works very well indeed, possibly the best SDS I've heard from a radio of this size, as good as the Synchronous Detection System found on the Sony 2010, 2001D or ICF-SW77. The AM broadcast band is nothing special, radio exhibits quite a bit of noise here. FM is dead hot! SSB reception is disappointing, Tecsun use a clarifier adjustment which fees rough to adjust and even worse, the clarifier control has a detent point in the middle of its travel, similar to what you'd find with a balance control for an amplifier, absolutely crazy. The PL660 is the first radio I've used with an "Air Band" though as yet I've found nothing up there, will take the radio outside as its a nice sunny day and do further experimentation. Haven't played with the memory system yet. Like the layout of the buttons and the various shapes in the buttons, round, square, rectangular, big and small, makes for instant recognition for important functions. The buttons are slightly indented into the front of the unit, almost flush one could say and that means that they're not likely to be knocked. Unlike the PL880, the PL660 runs on 4 AA size batteries which can either be rechargeable or alkaline types, the radio automatically detects the type being used. ** Dane Trethowan Skype: grtdane12 Phone US (213) 438-9741 Phone U.K. 01245 79 0598 Phone Australia (03) 9005 8589 Mobile: +61400494862 faceTime +61400494862 Fax +61397437954 Twitter: @grtdane

recording on my thinkpad skips
Hello all, wonder if anyone can help? I have a thinkpad that's a few years old; trying to record audio through its sound card. The recording skips occasionally. Not terrible, just enough to be annoying. Thinkpad running win 98 SE, using GoldWave 4.26 to record. Here's maybe a clue to the problem: when i listen to long audio (winamp 2.9) files (half hour radio shows, etc.) there are long pauses in playback while the cd is being read--this doesn't happen when the file is on the hard drive. I think it must have something to do with buffering? Help, please? Howard K Traxler, Traxler Enterprises Adaptive technology sales, setup, and training since 1989. Re: recording on my thinkpad skips
Thanks David, but I think you missed the point: My problem is skipping audio while recording through the sound card. The stuff about the CD drive and mp3 files is extra info which, if related, might help anyone to diagnose. I have already implemented the cure for the slow CD drive by copying files to the hard drive as you suggested--when necessary. I do have several desktop machines of the same or earlier vintage that record without a problem; so there's no reason that this laptop shouldn't do the same. I just don't know everything about the possible settings. Howard K Traxler, Traxler Enterprises Adaptive technology sales, setup, and training since 1989. Once you have Goldwave 5.14 you can take the audio from the cd and save it on your hard drive as an mp3 file so that you don't have to deal with the issues involved reading from the cd while reading. : : The biggest problem is that I am guessing the cd drive reads at a fairly slow rate, and it cannot read fast enough to keep up with the speed at which the audio is going out. So, yes there is a buffer issue, but it is caused by a slow cd drive. : : : - Original Message - : From: "Howard Traxler" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> : To: "PC audio discussion list. GoldWave and JAWS freeze up
Hi all, I have an older computer, Dell Dimension, probably almost ten years old. I just installed Windows 98 SE, JAWS 5.0, and GoldWave 4.26. Making .mp3's from cassette using Audacity.
Greetings, I know absolutely nothing about Audacity being a GoldWave user, but have received the following from another person who needs help. At the end of the correspondence, there is a DropBox link to a file she created, so please, can somebody go back to her (she is not on the PC Audio list so send privately and, if you wish, to the list). I reproduce the correspondence below. To: co...@pobox.com Subject: converting cassettes to mp3 From: Janine Greening Date: Fri, 26 Apr 2013 22:35:49 +0100 Hello Colin I hope you don't mind me writing, but i know that you have been known to convert cassettes to mp3, (i'm thinking of the archers), so i'm hoping you may be able to help with a slight problem. Basically, i instaled audasity software on to my new laptop last week, (something which i'd got on fine with on my previous laptop), and although the sound is fine when recording, playing the files back is very strange. Although the overall quality is fine, the files seam to jump occasionally, so that parts of words are missed, and the speed sometimes gets affected. Some of these recordings are archers tapes, so you may understand what i mean, when I say that the gaps between scene changes are totally missed, and i'll go from one scene into another with know pause at all. Do you have any suggestions about settings i need to change? I've tried just playing around with it, but all i seem to do is make the quality worse, or have know affect at all, as i'm not as technically minded as some, i'm not as experienced. If you like, i could up-load something to dropbox and show you exactly what I mean? I've converted a file to mp3 just to see if it was something in audasity itself, and sent it to someone else to test, and its having the same affect. Again, I hope you don't mind me writing. Many Thanks, Janine To: Janine Greening Subject: Re: converting cassettes to mp3 From: Colin Howard Date: Sat, 27 Apr 2013 08:56:02 +0100 Greetings, I know nothing at all about audacity, I use GoldWave, also I am on WindowsXP home, I suspect you are now on windows7 and I know there are a few differences. I mostly use totalRecorder V8.3Pro to record off-air then edit with GoldWave. I actually recorded the whole program this time onto my PlexTalk Pocket memory card from d.a.b then editted via GoldWave this time. Since starting this post, I have now downloaded the file and will give a listen using WinAmp V5.63, then come back with comments. Um, first one a couple of scenes no space and the words especially spoken by David seem to be chopped at the start, but it does not seem consistent. Start of second one signature tune some of the music missing at fade into program, otherwise so far, listening to David, Alistair and ruth, seems no problems. I will not now listen further, but I will send to the pc audio list and maybe somebody there will have an idea. Greetings, I suspect there are a good many, I know I have around 25,000 cassettes to digitize, plays, talks, documentaries, personal, lectures and the like. I would guess as Janene is a fan of The archers and as it has been going now for 62 years, she, like me, has a large archive of The archers. Equalizing an Existing mp3 File
I have just ripped some old, old open reel recordings to mp3 files. Some of the stuff would like less bass and/or more highs. I'm mainly using GoldWave for my editing. Recording level in GoldWave
I've been ripping my LPs, open reels, and cassettes to .wav files using GoldWave. The volume level of the resulting files vary by quite a bit. I can't get an idea of just how much until I finish editing and convert them to mp3 files. I then use MP3Gain to get them to the level I want. Not really understanding the measure of level in decabels, I just make them all 94 which sounds ok to me and is close to how loud my JAWS with Eloquence talks. I'm wondering if there's a way that I can tell earlier in the process if I need to raise or lower the recording level in GoldWave? Any suggestions? Thank you. Re: Recording level in Goldwave
Roger, the setup is the hardest part--at least it has been for me. Once GoldWave is set up and ready to go, press Control+n for new file, make the correct choices from the dialog box that comes up. Press control+F9 to start recording, then start your source material. When the playing has finished, press control+F8 to stop recording. Then do control+s to save your work. Choose the name, file type, and where to put it from the "save as" dialog box. When I'm ripping cassettes or vinyl, I usually want to manually split the file into separate tracks later on. So, while recording, I press control+q between tracks to drop a Q point. Then, when finished, I split the file using GoldWave's tools | q points dialog. The way I do it is certainly not the only way--maybe not even the best way, but it gets the job done. If you need more than this, I'll put together a step by stpep instruction. It'll make me feel like I'm back teaching again. In my working days, I created all kinds of these sets of instructions.. Good luck. Greetings, I took the liberty of writing myself to Chris, and though I pretended to have the file, this is his reply so hope it is of use. Mind you, we were not appraised of the SF file's format and I believe GW cannot save markers within a file, unless it is a .wav format but only as a separate file of the same name in the same folder, bearing the extension of .cue so hope bearing this in mind, the below reply is useful. Please let us know. To: Colin Howard Subject: Re: Importing markers. If SoundForge uses the Cue Points for storing markers (which is the standard way of doing it for Wave files), then you should see those in GoldWave as inverted triangles just above the time line. You can use "Tool | Cue Points" to list them. USB input device
I'm looking for a USB audio device that has adequate options for inputting mics and line level inputs in stereo. Inputs such as quarter-inch, XLR, RCA, eighth-inch. Re: USB input device
Thanks, Robert, for the suggestion. I've been looking at the 302 and 502; the price ain't much different. Judging from the Amazon description, it sounds like there's one combination XLR and quarter inch connector and a pair of RCA jacks. Sounds to me like it does not have stereo mic plugs. It says either three or five inputs. Does that mean channels? Or do they all feed into one channel. Nothing is mentioned about input or output level controls. Sure wish I could go down to the store and check it out. Thought if I find the manual I could learn a lot more; but can't seem to find one to download--or to do anything else with. All my experience is back in the 60's when it was all analog. Do you know a little more about these things that you could pass along? Thank you a lot. Sure appreciate your help. Re: Yamaha TD500 Tuner - DAB+ Sample
Dane, do I understand rightly the D.A.B Plus station transmits a normal a.m signal on the mf band and superimposes the d.a.b therefore a normal a.m set will hear no signifficant difference, apart from the bandwidth being somewhat greater? What frequency was the d.a.b plus signal on? What happens when a signifficant distance from the source? On normal a.m it decreases in level during day and tends to fade at night, I wonder if d.a.b plus skips as does a.m and what it sounds like? I believe it is a great pity we went for the antequated system we have, as it seems to me d.a.b plus has a good deal going for it. I did hear a d.a.b plus signal back in 2004 when visiting New York, think the station was on 770kHz or thereabouts, it was a.m during darkness but had the d.a.b plus in the day. I noticed the signal was noticeably wider and had greater bleed-over, but I was only listening on a standard a.m-type receiver. Greetings, Dane, off-topic but I must say it!! In a couple of hours time, plan to listen to our gallant chaps trying to score without losing more wickets! Strange game cricket eh! I don't like a game which is one-sided, I love it when there are three overs to go, forty runs to get, two wickets to fall!! Weather prospects seem a little dodgy, maybe some showers. Here in Southern Hampshire, some two hundred plus miles from Manchester, we had a lovely day Friday until a slight shower late afternoon then overnight a thunder storm but not really a lot of rain. Debunking Battery Life Myths for Mobile Phones, Tablets, and Laptops
Greetings, Just seen this on the VicugL group and thought the tips here would be of use. Batteries need to be cared for properly theyre a critical part of our mobile devices and battery technology hasnt advanced as fast as other technologies. Unfortunately, theres a lot of incorrect information about batteries out there. Some of the big myths come from old battery technologies and are actively harmful when applied to new battery technologies. For example, nickel-based batteries needed to be fully discharged, while modern lithium batteries shouldnt be fully discharged. Perform Shallow Discharges; Avoid Frequent Full Discharges Old NiMH and NiCd batteries had a memory effect and had to be completely discharged from 100% to 0% to keep their capacity. Modern devices use Lithium Ion batteries, which work differently and have no memory effect. In fact, completely discharging a Li-ion battery is bad for it. You should try to perform shallow discharges discharge the battery to something like 40-70% before recharging it, for example. Try to never let your battery go below 20% except in rare circumstances. If you were to discharge your battery to 50%, recharge it, and then discharge it to 50% again, that would count as a single cycle with modern Li-ion batteries. You dont need to worry about performing shallow charges. Theres only one problem that shallow discharges can cause. Laptops can get a bit confused by shallow discharges and may show you wrong estimates for how long your devices battery will last. Laptop manufacturers recommend you perform a full discharge about once per month to help calibrate the devices battery time estimate. Heat (and Cold) Can Damage Batteries Heat can reduce a batterys capacity. This affects all types of devices even smartphones heat up when performing demanding tasks but laptops can become hottest of all when under load. The battery is in the laptop, near the electronics that become hot while working heavily this contributes to battery wear. If you have a laptop that you use plugged in all of the time and it gets quite hot, removing the battery can increase the batterys life by limiting the batterys exposure to the heat of your laptop. This wont make too much of a difference in normal use, but if youre using a laptop to play a lot of demanding games and its heating up quite a bit, it may be helpful. Of course, this only applies to laptops with removable batteries. Your climate is also a concern. If it gets very hot where you live or you store your device somewhere that gets very hot say, a hot car left in the sun on a summer day your battery will wear down faster. Keep your devices near room temperature and avoid storing them in very hot places, such as hot cars on summer days. Extreme cold temperatures can decrease the lifespan of your battery, too. Dont put a spare battery in the freezer or expose any device with a battery to similarly cold temperatures if youre in a region with cold temperatures. Dont Leave the Battery At 0% You shouldnt leave the battery in a fully discharged state for very long. Ideally, the battery wouldnt discharge all the way to zero very often but if it does, you should recharge it as soon as possible. You dont have to race to a power outlet when your smartphone dies, but dont throw it in your drawer and leave it there for weeks without charging it. If you let the battery discharge completely and leave your device in a closet, the battery may become incapable of holding a charge at all, dying completely. Store Batteries at 50% Charge On the other hand, leaving the battery charged fully for an extended period of time could result in a loss of capacity and shorten its life. Ideally, youd store the battery at 50% charge if you werent going to use it for a while. Apple recommends you leave the battery at 50% if you intend on storing the device more than six months. If youre using it regularly, you shouldnt need to worry about its state although you never want to leave a battery at 0% for too long. Storing the battery while fully discharged could result in the battery dying completely, while storing the battery at full charge could result in the loss of some battery capacity and shorten your batterys life. This applies to both batteries in devices and spare batteries you may have lying around keep them at 50% if you wont be using them for some time. Leaving Your Laptop Plugged in All The Time Is Okay, But This one appears to be fairly controversial. Weve previously covered the eternal question of whether its okay to leave your laptop plugged in all the time. We concluded that its okay and the batterys temperature is the main thing you need to worry about. Apple disagrees, recommending against leaving its Macbook Air and Macbook Pro notebooks plugged in all the time. Ultimately, were both saying the same thing. Its fine to leave your laptop plugged in at your desk when youre using it,
A TotalRecorder question.
Greetings, First of all, I will explain my system, so I don't want people telling me to go to apple, or use Windows 7 or 8 or Linex or anything else, please stick with what I write. Thanks. I am using Windows XP Home fully updated, a Compak laptop, Total Recorder V8.3Pro (I know about v4 not yet installed it). My access software is Jaws V10. I mostly use TR in order to take programs off-air, my default settings, which I prefer to leave alone, are 44,100hertz 16-bit unsigned wav format, stereo, source of sound is software not soundboard. When I open the program my untitled file has the above attributes which are fine most of the time and I have no problems when the stream has been started, to begin recording in the empty file, by pressing the space bar, or to append to an existing file. On some occasions, such as when recording from BBC local radio streams, which are in mono and at a much lower bit rate, I separately, create a file of 24,000hertz 16-bit unsigned wav format, mono. So, I open TR, therefore it creates the untitled file, empty, of the default settings. I now want to use the file I have created so call it into TR using control with o and highlighting from the appropriate list. I now start the stream, having established the necessary site and looking at the appropriate link or button or whatever. Now back to TR, where the Record button is highlighted, the file has a second's worth of nothing, because TR won't see an empty file regarding it as an error so must be closed and reopened to use. So, now, I have the stream, the file open, the record button highlighted. I press space bar and see a dialogue asking do I want to record because this file is not of the format set out in my defaults. So I press space or enter denoting yes, recording commences and all is now fine. My question is, how can I make TR not keep displaying this dialogue? Yes, I could change the parameters but then, as has happened, I go to record something from a better quality stream forgetting I've changed the settings and, if it is not going to be available to retake, or I forget to check after closing the file, I lose the opportunity to take the stream at a better rate. I am sure somewhere there is a setting which may be changed saying, take a recording in the (supported format) file, no matter what it's settings. I have not found it so please can somebody explain, if and where this may be found. Thanks. To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

Greetings, If you can get hold of one, very very dificult now to obtain, I suggest the Nakamichi 680ZX, this is a dual-speed, three-head, plus/minus 6% speed playback, very very accurate allignment and assymuth control, machine is built like a battleship, has RCA. inputs and outputs and a DIN 7-pin socket, the purpose of which I have never discerned but presume it is some kind of in/out device. Note: this machine was discontinued by Nakamichi I believe in about 1983 due to rights issues hence it's difficulty in finding. Needless to say, I have one, purchased second-hand some fifteen years ago. The machine's speed even at 4.75CM/PS is very very good, it also handles metal, chrome and feric tapes, by adjusting the settings, it can be made to play tapes most others will not make any sense of. the wind is very fast, but it treats tapes with care. I have used C180 cassettes on this machine and it handles them no problem. I no longer have any of these, but plenty of c120 tapes and rarely have any problems with this machine. Re: which sound editor?
Greetings, GoldWave will do exactly what you want. You can use the pitch function, it has presets to move up/down a semi-tone, octave, you can fine tune even more. the equalizer works well and the whole shooting match is around $50 for a life time licence. http://www.goldwave.com I have just checked and the version being used here, V5.69, is the latest. Mind you, I am using WindowsXP Home, maybe the update function recognizes my o/s and only tells me of versions able to run on my system, so if you are using Windows7 or Windows8, maybe there is a later version. GoldWave Version 5.70 is now available.
Greetings, It seems, judging by what it indicates on the GoldWave site, this program will work in a WindowsXP environment, I had been led to believe V5.69 would be the last one to support WindowsXP systems. Here is the "What's New" file explaining changes for V5.70 and V5.69. GoldWave Revision History - v5.70 - Recompiled using Embarcadero C++ Builder XE4 Update 1. Increased size of processing window. Added audio notification options for the end of processing if processing takes more than 10 seconds. Adjusted filter cutoffs for resampling effects. Added Pause button to Edit Cue Point window. Added "Allow unsafe detection..." to GWVST plug-in setup to support older VST plug-ins. Replaced transparent playback cursor with solid line for faster drawing. Changed File Merger to use file Title information in cue points if present. Fixed bugs: multichannel files, batch processing resampling, level activated exception, silence reduction end. v5.69 - Recompiled using Embarcadero C++ Builder XE4. Created certificate signed install program. Changed MPEG-4 AAC attributes name to "MP4 (MPEG4 AAC)". Added properties to Status visual to change elapsed time format. Changed fonts in visuals to Arial. Greatly improved appearance of Analog Meter visual. Improved appearance of Bars visual. Added "Add Opened" button and durations to File Merger. Redesigned Split File naming method to use tokens. Added settings to replace track number and title of split files. Added Cursor and playback buttons to Edit Cue Point window. Added F4, F5, and F8 playback keys to Edit Cue Point window. Replace fader in Playback Rate and Resample with up/down control. Added ACM_STREAMCONVERTF_END setting for GoldWave File plug-in. Increased maximum sampling rate to 500kHz. Fixed bugs: Speak to File in Windows 8, portable settings, Spectrogram exception. . . . . Re: goldwave problem
greetings, I am using GW V5.70 on a windowsXP Home system, my only screen-access is Jaws and an ancient version being V10 on this Kompak laptop. I have a file open in GW and pressing the space bar starts where I am, not at the beginning. I prefer this, I have the three play controls set as follows: F2 (play1) = all F3 (play2) = selection F4 (play3) = view depending on which play I last used, determines how much is played when the space bar is pressed, in effect, this like the j k l winding function mirrors the function key winding. I am fully aware of cue points and fairly often use them as you for creating cd tracks. I am aware there is now a new function in the cue system about which, as I write, I know little but it is mentioned in the "What's new" notes which came with V5.70. I find the play settings given above are exactly what I most need and rarely find a need to alter them. If you would like, I can, off-list of course, send you my settings and keyboard files, maybe these will cure your problems. Be aware I have made modifications to the keyboard file, in the area of recording keys. To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

Greetings, Place cursor at start point of required fade then press left square bracket, ensure finish marker is at the point at which you want fade to end, probably in this case end of track, press right bracket. Now go into effects menu with alt-c then u for volume, then cursor down to the item, choose the kind of fade you want, i.e logrhythmic or whatever, enter, job complete. Play sound and if happy, fine else ctrl-z and try again with different settings. Speaking of capturing and stereo and such: In a (more or less) modern computer, how does one get the mic and line combination input jack to be stereo? Greetings, Maybe you can tell us a little about your audio experiences? Maybe you need help? Please come back as there are plenty here with vast experience who can assist in many areas. I, for instance, am a keen user of GoldWave, though at present, I am on WindowsXP Home and my access technology is Jaws, V.10 on this laptop and V.11 on my desktop, I have GoldWave V5.70 on both which, so far as I am aware, is still the latest version (at least for my system) maybe there are later programs capable of working with Windows7 and/or Windows8 of which, because I am still on XP Home, the update routines have not made me aware. I have been using GoldWave since 2006 most of the time in it's basic form this suits me for the areas I use, I do know very well. Re: Looking for PC software that changes key but not speed
Greetings, GoldWave also has the ability to move key without changing pitch, move up or down a tone, or semi-tone, keep tempo the same works fairly well but none of these algorythms are perfect, there is always a compromise, but GoldWave is not free once the trial expires. http://www.goldwave.com I've been using Gw for nearly 7 years. From: "Norman Octon" Date: Sat, 3 Dec 2011 16:45:49 - Hi Colin, I don't know about the high pass filter, but I have found a different solution which sounds fantastic to my ear. In goldwave, go to Effects, Filter, Equalizer. From the presets, select Inverse RIAA EQ curve. The effect was to remove too much base and boost the treble too much, so I modified the numbers a bit. Does the stereo switch on and off with different signal strengths mostly due to fading? What is the lowest useable frequency? Did anybody try stereo a.m on long wave? Just a few thoughts.

Using a Soundbar would mean very little set-up on my part to enjoy the experience of Surround-Sound in a movie or from Channels on my Set Top Box etc, no need to set-up individual speakers as I did in the lounge and so on. It should be noted that - whatever system you used with your Television these days - would improve the sound quality of your TV, the speakers in those TV sets now are even worse than 2 tins, 1 on each end of a piece of string.
