Re: C Crane pocket radio

2013-07-27 Thread Howard

hi:
I also have one of these.
the only things you cannot do is set the clock and alarm, and set the
weather alert for the options of 4, 8, and 16 hour alert settings.

you can turn on the the weather alert, though.
hope this helps.
p.s. I am also very satisfied with this radio.

I bought one of the C Crane pocket radios and am satisfied with its
performance. The price was $59 US plus shipping and California sales tax.
It has lots of buttons which are easily identified. the top button on the
right side of the radio selects AM, FM, and the weather band. The on/off
button, volume wheel and earphone jack are on the very top. On the face of
the radio you will find 2 vertical buttons which move up and down the
dial. There are 5 buttons you can use to pre-select your preferred
frequencies. Once you have located a station you hold down one of the 5
buttons for 2 seconds until you hear a beep and then repeat the process
for the next station you want. There are more buttons and functions which
I still don't understand and/or need at the moment. The sound is
acceptable to my old ears. There is a 60 day return policy if you decide
you do not want this radio.

Hope this is helpful. -

Okay well that's not too bad then if Humanware are using a provider, I
don't know what the provider is for Apple's iTunes/Apple TV Radio

something called Wifi Radio.

So can the Victor Reader Stream handle flash streams like most other
portable Internet Radio devices can?

If it can then I'll certainly look at buying one.

hi:
humanware uses ootunes.

One thing than can be said about the new Victor Reader Stream is that it
has a far better speaker than the older model but then again, what
doesn't!

I'm looking at Daisy players at the moment, the Plextalk Pocket looks a
very attractive option still even though the processor isn't as good as
that found in the Stream, dealers tell me that still the firmware is far
better.

The Milestone is also something I'm considering, Bluetooth connectivity
is very appealing.

Was a busy day yesterday what with computers coming back from hospital,
DM4 recorders turning up and the arrival of the Tecsun PL660 radio which I
honestly didn't expect here until Thursday but not complaining
nevertheless.

I'll give more details on the radio in the future, here are some initial
impressions to wet your appetite.

The PL660 is somewhat smaller than the PL880 and doesn't have the nice
sounding speaker of the PL880 but it does have excellent short wave
reception capabilities which are - in my view - the main selling point of
this radio.

The Sync Detection works very well indeed, possibly the best SDS I've
heard from a radio of this size, as good as the Synchronous Detection
System found on the Sony 2010, 2001D or ICF-SW77.

The AM broadcast band is nothing special, radio exhibits quite a bit of
noise here.

FM is dead hot!

SSB reception is disappointing, Tecsun use a clarifier adjustment which
fees rough to adjust and even worse, the clarifier control has a detent
point in the middle of its travel, similar to what you'd find with a
balance control for an amplifier, absolutely crazy.

The PL660 is the first radio I've used with an "Air Band" though as yet
I've found nothing up there, will take the radio outside as its a nice
sunny day and do further experimentation.

Haven't played with the memory system yet.

Like the layout of the buttons and the various shapes in the buttons,
round, square, rectangular, big and small, makes for instant recognition
for important functions.

The buttons are slightly indented into the front of the unit, almost flush
one could say and that means that they're not likely to be knocked.

Unlike the PL880, the PL660 runs on 4 AA size batteries which can either
be rechargeable or alkaline types, the radio automatically detects the
type being used.

To enable/disable Long Wave first turn the radio off then hold down the

If the Long Wave band is enabled the AM button should toggle you between
Medium and Long Wave.

Hi!

I think there were some list members who had questions regarding the
workings of this radio? If so then speak up now or forever hold your

The reason is because the format of the file you downloaded might be
pls or m3u, but if the streaming protocall don't allow for aac plus

to be clear, the BPP portable unit times out on streams that do not
play. It seems the unit described was the desktop version. While the
BPP has no list of stations like the new generation Stream, one can go
to Shoutcast and TuneIn and download M3u or PLS files of the streams
and copy them to the unit.

Many say the recorder on the BPP is clearly superior to the one on the
new generation Stream. Dane is insistent though that he must have
support for FLAC files.

It works for most every kind of stream except flash. I was surprised to
learn the player supports AAC streams, which the Plextalk and APH units
don't and probably never will.

If the stream doesn't play, it will say something like, stream failed to
start, by the same token however, The Plextalk and Aph players get
locked
up when the stream won't play, so you have to fiddle with it or get
disgusted with it enough that you remove the battery and Wait a few

so you can start the players again. It is not always feasible to carry a
little screwdriver with you to take the battery out of the Bookport

Works well with most networks, providing they don't use a web

you would with the older model.

recording on my thinkpad skips

2006-06-16 Thread Howard Traxler
Hello all, wonder if anyone can help?
I have a thinkpad that's a few years old; trying to record audio through its
sound card. The recording skips occasionally. Not terrible, just enough to
be annoying.

Thinkpad running win 98 SE, using GoldWave 4.26 to record.

Here's maybe a clue to the problem: when i listen to long audio (winamp
2.9) files (half hour radio shows, etc.) there are long pauses in playback
while the cd is being read--this doesn't happen when the file is on the hard
drive. I think it must have something to do with buffering?

Help, please?

Re: recording on my thinkpad skips

2006-06-17 Thread Howard Traxler
Thanks David, but I think you missed the point:
My problem is skipping audio while recording through the sound card. The
stuff about the CD drive and mp3 files is extra info which, if related,
might help anyone to diagnose. I have already implemented the cure for the
slow CD drive by copying files to the hard drive as you suggested--when
necessary.

I do have several desktop machines of the same or earlier vintage that
record without a problem; so there's no reason that this laptop shouldn't do
the same. I just don't know everything about the possible settings.

: You have a host of issues.
:
: I would say the primary problem is listening from cd, which is the primary
reason for the problem.
:
: Here would be my recommendation, but it isn't necessarily a cheap one.
:
: 1. upgrade to Windows XP.
: 2. Upgrade go Goldwave 5.14 (current version).
: 3. Upgrade Winamp to version 5.2.
: 4. Once you have Goldwave 5.14 you can take the audio from the cd and save
it on your hard drive as an mp3 file so that you don't have to deal with the
issues involved reading from the cd while reading.
:
: The biggest problem is that I am guessing the cd drive reads at a fairly
slow rate, and it cannot read fast enough to keep up with the speed at which
the audio is going out. So, yes there is a buffer issue, but it is caused
by a slow cd drive.

GoldWave and JAWS freeze up

2008-05-30 Thread Howard Traxler
Hi all,
I have an older computer, Dell Dimension, probably almost ten years old. I
just installed Windows 98 SE, JAWS 5.0, and GoldWave 4.26. The machine is

record my vinyl from a stereo receiver and turntable. Sometimes it will
work a long time, but somtimes the whole thing freezers up after 5 or 10
minutes. Any idea what to look for?

Making .mp3's from cassette using Audacity.

2013-04-27 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

I know absolutely nothing about Audacity being a GoldWave user, but have
received the following from another person who needs help.

At the end of the correspondence, there is a DropBox link to a file she
created, so please, can somebody go back to her (she is not on the PC Audio
list so send privately and, if you wish, to the list).

I reproduce the correspondence below.

Subject: converting cassettes to mp3
From: Janine Greening
Date: Fri, 26 Apr 2013 22:35:49 +0100

Hello Colin

I hope you don't mind me writing, but i know that you have been known to
convert cassettes to mp3, (i'm thinking of the archers), so i'm hoping you
may be able to help with a slight problem. Basically, i
instaled audasity software on to my new laptop last week, (something which
i'd got on fine with on my previous laptop), and although the sound is fine
when recording, playing the files back is very strange. Although the
overall quality is fine, the files seam to jump occasionally, so that parts
of words are missed, and the speed sometimes gets affected. Some of these
recordings are archers tapes,
so you may understand what i mean, when I say that the gaps between scene
changes are totally missed, and i'll go from one scene into another with
know pause at all. Do you have any suggestions about
settings i need to change? I've tried just playing around with it, but all i
seem to do is make the quality worse, or have know affect
at all, as i'm not as technically minded as some, i'm not as experienced.
If you like, i could up-load something to dropbox and show you exactly what
I mean? I've converted a file to mp3 just to see
if it was something in audasity itself, and sent it to someone else to test,
and its having the same affect. Again, I hope you don't mind me
writing. Many Thanks,

Janine

Greetings,

I know nothing at all about audacity, I use GoldWave, also I am on WindowsXP
home, I suspect you are now on windows7 and I know there are a few
differences.

Send me something via Dropbox and I'll take a listen.

Can you play other files without problems?

Hello Colin

As promised, here is a dropbox link for you. Its what I recorded most
recently, so it made sense to send it. the link is:

Greetings,

Thanks, I am downloading the file.

I use GoldWave to record, it is not free but for the $40 or so lifetime
licence, I think it is well worth it.

GoldWave is very user-friendly having Jaws scripts written and kept updated.

I will send you a DropBox link for a file I recently put up from You and
Yours and which I sent to a few groups, maybe you've seen it but here is the
file name and download link.

File Name:
Article from You and Yours 2013 04 17 about ATOS and tests for work.mp3

File size:
15.2 MB (15,943,576 bytes)

Down Load Link:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7644179/Article%20from%20You%20and%20Yours%202013%2004%2017%20about%20ATOS%20and%20tests%20for%20work.mp3

I will not be leaving it up beyond 30 april so take it and have a listen.

I mostly use totalRecorder V8.3Pro to record off-air then edit with
GoldWave. I actually recorded the whole program this time onto my PlexTalk
Pocket memory card from d.a.b then editted via GoldWave this time.

Since starting this post, I have now downloaded the file and will give a
listen using WinAmp V5.63, then come back with comments.

Um, first one a couple of scenes no space and the words especially spoken by
David seem to be chopped at the start, but it does not seem consistent.

Start of second one signature tune some of the music missing at fade into
program, otherwise so far, listening to David, Alistair and ruth, seems no
problems.

I will not now listen further, but I will send to the pc audio list and
maybe somebody there will have an idea. I will send the DropBox link so
please don't delete the file for a few days, I will copy you into the post I
send.

Re: Making .mp3's from cassette using Audacity.

2013-04-27 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

I suspect there are a good many, I know I have around 25,000 cassettes to
digitize, plays, talks, documentaries, personal, lectures and the like.

I would guess as Janene is a fan of The archers and as it has been going now
for 62 years, she, like me, has a large archive of The archers. I have
quite a few of the last few years in digital format now but it is a slow
job.

Equalizing an Existing mp3 File

2013-05-02 Thread Howard Traxler
I have just ripped some old, old open reel recordings to mp3 files. Some of
the stuff would like less bass and/or more highs. I'm mainly using GoldWave
for my editing.

Question: Is there a way to change the Equalization of a file like you can
change the volume using MP3Gain? I know I'll never get rid of the distortion
but the stuff could sound better than it does.

Thanks.

Recording level in GoldWave

2013-05-11 Thread Howard Traxler
I've been ripping my LPs, open reels, and cassettes to .wav files using
GoldWave. The volume level of the resulting files vary by quite a bit. I
can't get an idea of just how much until I finish editing and convert them to
mp3 files. I then use MP3Gain to get them to the level I want. Not really
understanding the measure of level in decabels, I just make them all 94 which
sounds ok to me and is close to how loud my JAWS with Eloquence talks.

I'm wondering if there's a way that I can tell earlier in the process if I need
to raise or lower the recording level in GoldWave?

Any suggestions? Thank you.
Howard

Re: Recording level in Goldwave

2013-05-12 Thread Howard Traxler
Roger, the setup is the hardest part--at least it has been for me.

Once GoldWave is set up and ready to go, press Control+n for new file, make the
correct choices from the dialog box that comes up. Press control+F9 to start
recording, then start your source material. When the playing has finished,
press control+F8 to stop recording. Then do control+s to save your work.
Choose the name, file type, and where to put it from the "save as" dialog box.

When I'm ripping cassettes or vinyl, I usually want to manually split the file
into separate tracks later on. So, while recording, I press control+q between
tracks to drop a Q point. Then, when finished, I split the file using
GoldWave's tools | q points dialog.

The way I do it is certainly not the only way--maybe not even the best way, but
it gets the job done. If you need more than this, I'll put together a step by
stpep instruction. It'll make me feel like I'm back teaching again. In my
working days, I created all kinds of these sets of instructions..

Good luck.

Greetings,

I took the liberty of writing myself to Chris, and though I pretended to
have the file, this is his reply so hope it is of use.

Mind you, we were not appraised of the SF file's format and I believe GW
cannot save markers within a file, unless it is a .wav format but only as a
separate file of the same name in the same folder, bearing the extension of
.cue so hope bearing this in mind, the below reply is useful. Please let us
know.

If SoundForge uses the Cue Points for storing markers (which is the standard
way of doing it for Wave files), then you should see those in GoldWave as
inverted triangles just above the time line. You can use "Tool | Cue
Points" to list them.

I have just checked and no updates found for my GW.

Re: USB input device

2013-06-15 Thread Howard Traxler
Thanks, Robert, for the suggestion.

I've been looking at the 302 and 502; the price ain't much different. Judging
from the Amazon description, it sounds like there's one combination XLR and
quarter inch connector and a pair of RCA jacks. Sounds to me like it does not
have stereo mic plugs. It says either three or five inputs. Does that mean
channels? Or do they all feed into one channel. Nothing is mentioned about
input or output level controls.

Sure wish I could go down to the store and check it out. Thought if I find the
manual I could learn a lot more; but can't seem to find one to download--or to
do anything else with. All my experience is back in the 60's when it was all
analog. Do you know a little more about these things that you could pass
along? Thank you a lot. Sure appreciate your help.

The function you need to use is the maximize volume, within which use the
full dynamic range preset, read the settings and decide if this will suit,
as it will find the maximum level on each chanel, displaying the time at
which it occurs and, of course, this may not be the same on each stereo

Re: Yamaha TD500 Tuner - DAB+ Sample

2013-08-03 Thread Colin Howard
Dane,

do I understand rightly the D.A.B Plus station transmits a normal a.m signal
on the mf band and superimposes the d.a.b therefore a normal a.m set will
hear no signifficant difference, apart from the bandwidth being somewhat
greater? What frequency was the d.a.b plus signal on? What happens when a
signifficant distance from the source? On normal a.m it decreases in level
during day and tends to fade at night, I wonder if d.a.b plus skips as does
a.m and what it sounds like?

I believe it is a great pity we went for the antequated system we have, as
it seems to me d.a.b plus has a good deal going for it.

I did hear a d.a.b plus signal back in 2004 when visiting New York, think
the station was on 770kHz or thereabouts, it was a.m during darkness but had
the d.a.b plus in the day. I noticed the signal was noticeably wider and
had greater bleed-over, but I was only listening on a standard a.m-type
receiver.

Debunking Battery Life Myths for Mobile Phones, Tablets, and Laptops

2013-08-22 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

Just seen this on the VicugL group and thought the tips here would be of
use.

Batteries need to be cared for properly — they’re a critical part of our
mobile devices and battery technology hasn’t advanced as fast as other
technologies. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of incorrect information about
batteries out there.

Some of the big myths come from old battery technologies and are actively
harmful when applied to new battery technologies. For example, nickel-based
batteries needed to be fully discharged, while modern lithium batteries
shouldn’t be fully discharged.

Perform Shallow Discharges; Avoid Frequent Full Discharges
Old NiMH and NiCd batteries had a “memory effect” and had to be completely
discharged from 100% to 0% to keep their capacity. Modern devices use
Lithium Ion batteries, which work differently and have no memory effect. In
fact, completely discharging a Li-ion battery is bad for it. You should try
to perform shallow discharges — discharge the battery to something like
40-70% before recharging it, for example. Try to never let your battery go
below 20% except in rare circumstances.

If you were to discharge your battery to 50%, recharge it, and then
discharge it to 50% again, that would count as a single “cycle” with modern
Li-ion batteries. You don’t need to worry about performing shallow charges.

There’s only one problem that shallow discharges can cause. Laptops can get
a bit confused by shallow discharges and may show you wrong estimates for
how long your device’s battery will last. Laptop manufacturers recommend you
perform a full discharge about once per month to help calibrate the device’s
battery time estimate.

Heat (and Cold) Can Damage Batteries
Heat can reduce a battery’s capacity. This affects all types of devices —
even smartphones heat up when performing demanding tasks — but laptops can
become hottest of all when under load. The battery is in the laptop, near
the electronics that become hot while working heavily — this contributes to
battery wear.

If you have a laptop that you use plugged in all of the time and it gets
quite hot, removing the battery can increase the battery’s life by limiting
the battery’s exposure to the heat of your laptop. This won’t make too much
of a difference in normal use, but if you’re using a laptop to play a lot of
demanding games and it’s heating up quite a bit, it may be helpful. Of
course, this only applies to laptops with removable batteries.

Your climate is also a concern. If it gets very hot where you live or you
store your device somewhere that gets very hot — say, a hot car left in the
sun on a summer day — your battery will wear down faster. Keep your devices
near room temperature and avoid storing them in very hot places, such as hot
cars on summer days.

Extreme cold temperatures can decrease the lifespan of your battery, too.
Don’t put a spare battery in the freezer or expose any device with a battery
to similarly cold temperatures if you’re in a region with cold temperatures.

Don’t Leave the Battery At 0%
You shouldn’t leave the battery in a fully discharged state for very long.
Ideally, the battery wouldn’t discharge all the way to zero very often — but
if it does, you should recharge it as soon as possible. You don’t have to
race to a power outlet when your smartphone dies, but don’t throw it in your
drawer and leave it there for weeks without charging it. If you let the
battery discharge completely and leave your device in a closet, the battery
may become incapable of holding a charge at all, dying completely.

Store Batteries at 50% Charge
On the other hand, leaving the battery charged fully for an extended period
of time could result in a loss of capacity and shorten its life. Ideally,
you’d store the battery at 50% charge if you weren’t going to use it for a
while. Apple recommends you leave the battery at 50% if you intend on
storing the device more than six months. If you’re using it regularly, you
shouldn’t need to worry about its state — although you never want to leave a
battery at 0% for too long.

Storing the battery while fully discharged could result in the battery dying
completely, while storing the battery at full charge could result in the
loss of some battery capacity and shorten your battery’s life.

This applies to both batteries in devices and spare batteries you may have
lying around — keep them at 50% if you won’t be using them for some time.

Leaving Your Laptop Plugged in All The Time Is Okay, But…
This one appears to be fairly controversial. We’ve previously covered the
eternal question of whether it’s okay to leave your laptop plugged in all
the time. We concluded that it’s okay and the battery’s temperature is the
main thing you need to worry about. Apple disagrees, recommending against
leaving its Macbook Air and Macbook Pro notebooks plugged in all the time.

Ultimately, we’re both saying the same thing. It’s fine to leave your laptop
plugged in at your desk when you’re using it,

A TotalRecorder question.

2013-08-28 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

First of all, I will explain my system, so I don't want people telling me to
go to apple, or use Windows 7 or 8 or Linex or anything else, please stick
with what I write.

Thanks.

I am using Windows XP Home fully updated, a Compak laptop, Total Recorder
V8.3Pro (I know about v4 not yet installed it). My access software is Jaws
V10.

I mostly use TR in order to take programs off-air, my default settings,
which I prefer to leave alone, are 44,100hertz 16-bit unsigned wav format,
stereo, source of sound is software not soundboard.

When I open the program my untitled file has the above attributes which are
fine most of the time and I have no problems when the stream has been
started, to begin recording in the empty file, by pressing the space bar, or
to append to an existing file.

On some occasions, such as when recording from BBC local radio streams,
which are in mono and at a much lower bit rate, I separately, create a file
of 24,000hertz 16-bit unsigned wav format, mono. So, I open TR, therefore
it creates the untitled file, empty, of the default settings.

I now want to use the file I have created so call it into TR using control
with o and highlighting from the appropriate list.

I now start the stream, having established the necessary site and looking at
the appropriate link or button or whatever.

Now back to TR, where the Record button is highlighted, the file has a
second's worth of nothing, because TR won't see an empty file regarding it
as an error so must be closed and reopened to use.

So, now, I have the stream, the file open, the record button highlighted.
I press space bar and see a dialogue asking do I want to record because this
file is not of the format set out in my defaults. So I press space or enter
denoting yes, recording commences and all is now fine.

My question is, how can I make TR not keep displaying this dialogue? Yes, I
could change the parameters but then, as has happened, I go to record
something from a better quality stream forgetting I've changed the settings
and, if it is not going to be available to retake, or I forget to check
after closing the file, I lose the opportunity to take the stream at a
better rate.

I am sure somewhere there is a setting which may be changed saying, take a
recording in the (supported format) file, no matter what it's settings.

I have not found it so please can somebody explain, if and where this may be
found.

Thanks.

Re: transfering from cassettes

2013-09-08 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

If you can get hold of one, very very dificult now to obtain, I suggest the
Nakamichi 680ZX, this is a dual-speed, three-head, plus/minus 6% speed
playback, very very accurate allignment and assymuth control, machine is
built like a battleship, has RCA. inputs and outputs and a DIN 7-pin socket,
the purpose of which I have never discerned but presume it is some kind of
in/out device.

Note: this machine was discontinued by Nakamichi I believe in about 1983 due
to rights issues hence it's difficulty in finding.

Needless to say, I have one, purchased second-hand some fifteen years ago.

The machine's speed even at 4.75CM/PS is very very good, it also handles
metal, chrome and feric tapes, by adjusting the settings, it can be made to
play tapes most others will not make any sense of.

the wind is very fast, but it treats tapes with care. I have used C180
cassettes on this machine and it handles them no problem.

I no longer have any of these, but plenty of c120 tapes and rarely have any
problems with this machine.

I have just checked and the version being used here, V5.69, is the latest.
Mind you, I am using WindowsXP Home, maybe the update function recognizes my

will work in a WindowsXP environment, I had been led to believe V5.69 would
be the last one to support WindowsXP systems.

Here is the "What's New" file explaining changes for V5.70 and V5.69.

GoldWave Revision History

level activated exception, silence reduction end.

v5.69
-
Recompiled using Embarcadero C++ Builder XE4.
Created certificate signed install program.
Changed MPEG-4 AAC attributes name to "MP4 (MPEG4 AAC)".
Added properties to Status visual to change elapsed time format.
Changed fonts in visuals to Arial.
Greatly improved appearance of Analog Meter visual.
Improved appearance of Bars visual.
Added "Add Opened" button and durations to File Merger.

Re: goldwave problem

2013-11-06 Thread Colin Howard
greetings,

I am using GW V5.70 on a windowsXP Home system, my only screen-access is
Jaws and an ancient version being V10 on this Kompak laptop.

I have a file open in GW and pressing the space bar starts where I am, not
at the beginning.

I prefer this, I have the three play controls set as follows:

F2 (play1) = all
F3 (play2) = selection
F4 (play3) = view

depending on which play I last used, determines how much is played when the
space bar is pressed, in effect, this like the j k l winding function
mirrors the function key winding.

I am fully aware of cue points and fairly often use them as you for creating
cd tracks.

I am aware there is now a new function in the cue system about which, as I
write, I know little but it is mentioned in the "What's new" notes which
came with V5.70.

I find the play settings given above are exactly what I most need and rarely
find a need to alter them.

If you would like, I can, off-list of course, send you my settings and
keyboard files, maybe these will cure your problems.

Be aware I have made modifications to the keyboard file, in the area of
recording keys.

Not sure about these but in GoldWave, it works well as I can attest from
trying the following, sent me a considerable while ago when I had some
minidisk recordings of Strangers and Brothers I needed to digitize and could
not reduce the bass on the player.

I suggest contact the sender and ask for his sample, for I no longer possess

Hi Colin,

I don't know about the high pass filter, but I have found a different
solution which sounds fantastic to my ear.

In goldwave, go to Effects, Filter, Equalizer. From the presets, select
Inverse RIAA EQ curve. The effect was to remove too much base and boost the
treble too much, so I modified the numbers a bit. I'll send you my result.

So far, the Jaws scripts (goldwave_5.57_jaws_scripts_1.60.zip) work fine
with Version 5.70 on this WindowsXP Home and Jaws V10 system.

I am not aware if there might be a later version of the scripts.

WinAmp / Windows Media.

Greetings,

Please can anybody tell me if there is a format for Media Player like
WinAmp, where the playlist can be given as a file with a specific extension
which if I remember rightly is something like .m3u or .pls or . . .

I need to send .mp3 files out as .zip archives, which when extracted and
played in Media Player, play track-by-track-by-track enabling a person to
skip but also the files must play in WinAmp, so I need include a .m3u file.

also, would I simply put the files into the playlist file like for WinAmp,
for example:

track-01.mp3
track-02.mp3
. . .

Thanks.

2014-04-06 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

I have absolutely no idea what system is being used in the files, DropBox
link for which is below, all I can tell you it in the UK A.M stereo has
never taken off, I am unaware what, if any serious experiments have been
carried out over here.

The archive file, link for which is below, contains two .mp3s, one is a
report given on the date indicated by the file name, the other, is a
recording made of the A.M. stereo service named, in the location
indicated,at the time and date specified in the file name.

Please be aware the recordings, at a rather low sampling rate, are somewhat
over-modulated but ought to give some idea.

I know only what is in the recordings therefore cannot make any further
comments.

I will only leave this file on Dropbox until Thursday next, 2014/04/10 at
mid day UK time, as I do not have much disk space left with which to work.

I would have thought somebody must have heard this, so why no comments?

I am interested to know what happens when a little out of the strongest
signal area? Does the stereo switch on and off with different signal
strengths mostly due to fading?

What is the lowest useable frequency? Did anybody try stereo a.m on long

I have been loathed to upgrade to Windows7, due to all the comments read

Re: Soundbars

How does one get the audio from the TV into any other device. My TV (a
probably 25-year-old Zenith) has inputs for left, right, and video. It has no
outputs at all. All you get is the little internal speakers that are (maybe)
24 inches apart. I also have another set (off brand) that I bought about 14
years ago to catch girls. It has no connections, in or out.

things I did when testing the Bose Lifestyle V35. I played music on it. It's
cool how since it splits the audio among the 5 speakers, you get a lot more
detail. I played Tik Tok on it.

I agree with pretty much everything that Walter has written below, Soundbars
are a very convenient option, to illustrate the point let's take my
situation where I'm using a room with a small TV, I have a surround-sound
system in the lounge but don't want that in my Den, I just want something I
can use with my Television.

Using a Soundbar would mean very little set-up on my part to enjoy the
experience of Surround-Sound in a movie or from Channels on my Set Top Box
etc, no need to set-up individual speakers as I did in the lounge and so on.

It should be noted that - whatever system you used with your Television
these days - would improve the sound quality of your TV, the speakers in
those TV sets now are even worse than 2 tins, 1 on each end of a piece of
string.

There are several reasons for the bad audio quality, the most obvious being
that Television sets these days are getting to the point of being as thick
as a piece of cardboard thus good sound would really be defying the laws of
physics.
