CD INFORMATION FROM ALLOFMP3.COM
Hi all When one buys songs from allofmp3.com, is it possible to get the cd information somewhere. At another [much more expensive!] online music service I belong to, you get the cd cover information in a jpg file when you download. I hope this question makes sense to someone! RE: ripping CD's with windows media player
Hi all Just another question about this for which there is probably not really an answer. Are there some music which can actually be e.g. ripped to mp3 format without really losing too much or no sound quality? I am thinking now of e.g. music recorded in the fifties and sixties, single instruments or people singing with very small accomponiments? Just curious. Andre -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Kevin Lloyd Sent: 04 June 2006 08:03 PM To: PC audio discussion list. Subject: Re: ripping CD's with windows media player Hi Mari. Not a stupid question at all - the myriad of formats are definitely confusing until you get more acquainted with digital music. Basically, lossless means that nothing has been taken away from the music during compression. So, all of your high and low frequencies are left intact and therefore the quality of the source music is preserved. The opposite of lossless is known as lossy. This covers formats like MP3 and WMA files ripped at lower bit rates. With lossy compression, some of the high and low frequencies are lost to compress the music down into the smallest space possible. There are also a number of psycho-acoustic techniques used to remove parts of the music that is deemed will not be missed by the listener such as quieter sounds that happen to be playing whilst there is a louder sound almost obscuring it. All formats have their own proprietary algorithms that dictate how the music is processed and that's why it's never a good idea to convert from one lossy format to another. Lossless files take up a lot more disc space than lossy formats and so it's worth bearing this in mind when deciding on what format to use. Regards. Hi all Just one thing I have found and also the reason why I do not use winamp. Many download services like od2.com which is the one used by a South African company here, encrypt their files in copywrited wma format. I have never found a version of winamp that can play them. And therefore I prefer to use one player that can support the formats I need, i.e. wma lossless, mp3 and copywrighted wma files. Subject: Re: ripping CD's with windows media player hi kevin, you probably have some good points here. i haven't really bothered to try and mess with media player for live albums in my posession. as for doing better with WMA, yeah. some of microsoft's products do actually work together. there are several bonuses for winamp, though. for one, it's about half the size of media player, even with the full version, which if you're on dial up like myself is a plus. also all the shoutcast stations that are available and free to broadcast to and listen to. i'm a pretty big fan of internet radio and i like shoutcast and icecast stuff. the winamp library i think does actually rip into WMA lossless, in the latest version 5.22. mp3 ripping is not available without purchasse, which is kind of sucky, but it does offer aac+ and if there were media players out there you can bet i'd have everything in that beautiful beautiful format. I didn't know that CDEX had released a new version that isn't free. can you send me the url so I can check it out? the free version also rips into aac+, mp3, ogg and a few lossless encoding technologies, so if i ever used them i'd do that. however i can't tell much of a difference between the original cd and my 192 kbps mp3 files, or even my 120 kbps ogg files with whatever compression i installed, can't remember the name of it at the moment. i suppose it all comes down to what you use the media player for, the music you rip and what you listen to. brandon Brandon Hicks Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype: callto://reyuth msn: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ PC-Audio List Help, Guidelines, Archives and more... http://www.pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This list is a service of MosenExplosion.com. SWITCHING SOUND DEVICES ON SKYPE
Hi all Wonder if someone can help me with this problem. I have an Olympia Skype dual phone which works wonderfully as it is both a Skype and landline phone. However, I have a severe hearing loss and I have an FM transmitter connected to the output of the soundcard on the computer. When using Skype, I want to use the cordless phone as a microphone and the soundcard output for the audio. Unfortunatelly, Skype automatically uses the dual phone for both output and input. This means that if someone calls me, I have to tell them to hold on a moment so that I can change the sound devices output to go through the soundcard. Although this does not by any means make skype unuseful to me, it gets annoying to ask people to hold on every time! And skype refuses to accept my configuration for this and changes it back to the dual phone for output every time. Now after all these ramblings, finally my question: Is there a way to tell Skype to not keep changing my output sound device every time? RE: making music CD's
Hi Brad The site is very accessible and you can choose whether you want to download single tracks or the whole album. And the thing I like most is the fact that you can choose the encoding you want to use. You actually do not pay by track, but for the bandwidth you use. Therefore the higher you encode, the more you will pay. But even in lossless formats which you can use for some of the albums, it's still remarkably cheap! SPEEED DIAL NUMBERS IN SKYPE
Hi all Using Jaws 6.2, the newest version of Skype as well as the newest beta version of the scripts. I have assigned all quite a number of speed dial numbers for contacts. In the past, Skype always displayed the speed dial numbers associated with a specific contact. Unfortunately, for some reason, it doesn't seem to do it anymore. Any help on how to fix this? RE: making music CD's
Hi! There is a small programme on the allofmp3 site called allofmp3 explorer which can help you to download albums or individual tracks and even put them into the right folders for artists and albums. And you can download individual tracks with it. It also has a resume feature. I usually set it going while doing something else. It gives you a doorbell like sound when a track is downloaded. Hi! This is what is so good about this site and why you will find quite a few blind persons subscribed to it. You have a choice of encoding from mp3, wma and a few other encoding methods. Usually from 128 up to 380 I think with some music available in lossless format. You can expect to pay somewhere between 2 and 4 us dollars per album with some music being even cheaper, depending on the encoding. Yes indeed. You have a choice whether you want to download individual tracks or an entire album. The higher you encode, the more you pay. But even when using very high encoding, I believe it is still one of the cheapest if not the cheapest download music available - excluding filesharing services of course. If you use the allofmp3 explorer, you can download whole albums with ease. It even creates+ artist and album folders for you. By the way, has anyone used the alltunes software they have now? I found it rather inaccessible with no menu bar at all. Hi Kathy As far as I can understand it, its a replacement for the explorer. I installed it and tried to use it, but you have to use the jaws cursor quite a loot. Its not clear to me what the difference between the two is though. This is exactly why I asked the question here. Let's hope some computer and audio fundi on the list can help out! Interesting though that many of the download services uses wma encoding then. Hi Dave! Unfortunately not. The only way you could get around this is to get a sighted person to help with the verification. But once you get around it the sight is a breeze to work with - and as you said the prices are terrific. And I can guarantee you quite a lot of the kind of music we like. I don't mind having to sign up for an account and all, but then I find the problem. They employ visual verification as part of the signup process. They offer no alternative. I'm totally blind. Their help section offers no answer. I may be able to find sighted help to get through this, but I can't guess exactly when or how at this point. The story told of a place it called Ipod city where 200,000 people work and live with factories, dormitories, restaurants, grocers, and health clinics. It even has its own transit system. The article said workers for Apple assemble iPods by hand standing up at tables for 14 hours a day. They are paid much less then other factory workers in China. If they try to stretch their arms or legs after many hours of standing nearly still, Apple's minders force them to do push ups and humiliate them in front of other workers. The offending worker is then slapped with mandatory overtime, toiling until they virtually collapse from exhaustion and stress. How "cool" is that? Kelly The Observer [UK] Sunday September 10, 2006 Why the iPod is losing its cool Apple has added ever more extras to its digital music-player in a bid to stem falling sales. But fears are rising that the device is now too common to be cutting edge David Smith, technology correspondent The Mermaid, Puddle Dock, is not the first place you might go in search of the cool and cutting edge. That will not stop an expectant crowd gathering at the conference centre in London's Blackfriars this week for a live satellite broadcast from San Francisco that could make or break one of the consumer icons of the Western world. The iPod, the digital music player beloved of everyone from Coldplay's Chris Martin to President George Bush, is in danger of losing its sheen. Sales are declining at an unprecedented rate. Industry experts talk of a 'backlash' and of the iPod 'wilting away before our eyes'. Most disastrously, Apple's signature pocket device with white earphones may simply have become too common to be cool. On Tuesday the eyes of iPod-lovers the world over will be on Steve Jobs, the co-founder and chief executive of Apple, when he seeks to allay fears that it could follow Sony's tape-playing Walkman into the recycling bin of history. Jobs is widely expected to announce the most ambitious iPod service yet - the sale of feature-length films via the internet for viewing on the devices, which may receive an expanded 'widescreen' and improved storage capacity. If downloading movies from a computer to an iPod proves even half as revolutionary as it did for music, the multibillion-pound DVD industry could be quaking. There are rumours that Jobs will also announce a long expected 'iPhone', combining the music function and sleek style of an iPod with a mobile phone. Industry-watchers warn that the iPod could soon be regarded by teenage cynics as their 'parents' player' because a mass-market product rarely equates with edgy fashionability. Although it has sold nearly 60 million actual iPods and a billion downloaded songs worldwide, cracks have begun to appear in the edifice. The Zandl Group, a New York-based trends forecaster which regularly interviews a panel of 3,000 consumers aged 25-35, recently picked up its first significant criticisms. 'The iPod is far and away the most popular tech gadget with our panellists - however, for the first time we are hearing negative feedback about the iPod from some panellists,' said the organisation's spokeswoman, Carla Avruch. 'Panellists cite that the batteries are not replaceable, so when they die the entire player must be replaced,' she said. 'We have heard from some conspiracy theorists that the batteries are made to die soon after the warranty ends. 'Other complaints are that iTunes [Apple's online music store] is overpriced and the format is not easily transferred on to other players. In our ethnography interviews, some long-time iPod-users told us that they have stopped updating their iPods because it's too much work, while other consumers who had bought iPods more recently had not even taken theirs out of the package to set it up.' She added that the iPod is in danger of becoming a victim of its own success: 'Some backlash is against the ubiquity of the iPod - everyone has those white headphones on the train.' Analysts warn that the iPod has passed its peak. From its launch five years ago its sales graph showed a consistent upward curve, culminating in a period around last Christmas that saw a record 14 million sold. But sales fell to 8.5 million in th

TOTAL BITHEAD FROM HEADROOM
Hi all Just a short note to tell you about a very nice little headphone amplifier I got from the US recently. It's called the Total Bithead and you can read more about it from www.headphon.com The sound is good and although it is not the smallest I've ever seen, it's maneagable. You can use it to amplify the output from your mp3 player by quite some magnitude and the sound is actually better. It also has a crossfade switch which can significantly improve the sound quality when listening to headphones. One of the very handy things I found about this little device is that it can be used as a simple high quality USB sound card also. You simply plug in the USB cord into a vacant USB slot and Windows XP will recognise it immediately. Hi Ken, my personal view is that you need to look at music in the context of what else you might like to do on the go. For example, if you use a cell phone or might like to, then getting an accessible cell phone with a good music player, such as those from Nokia, might be the best option. The Victor Reader Stream will play NLS books, which in North America is certainly a factor, however other than this, I see no point in it at all. It is another device to carry around. The Stream sells fairly well in North America, where the smart phone culture is not well established. But on the Nokia N82 I have, not only can I read print on the go with the KNFB Reader mobile, but I can also play DAISY books, work with MP3 files in a very accessible and flexible way, listen to Audible content and download podcasts right from the phone. So there is no need to carry another device around with me that duplicates those functions. If you don't want an accessible cell phone, then there are many portable music playback options. The Stream is certainly worth considering and that will also read DAISY and regular texts. You might even look at an iPod Shuffle which is very easy to operate and small. This will play music and Audible books, but not DAISY. There are many more, the Zenstone seems quite popular. And let's not forget the iPod Nano, which talks now. Hi all I am seriously considering getting the plextalk ptr 2 for recording meetings and such. I am looking for some sample recordings of this machine. On brian hartgen's site www.hartgen.org On the link to the ptr 2 there are two links to sample recordings - one from michael lang and the other one from Brian himself. Recording quality of victor reader xtreme
Hi all I hhave some questions regarding the victor reader xtreme especially regarding it's recording quality. This is probably one of the best pieces of technology to come out in a long time. But can it be used effectively as a recorder for lectures and conferences? And will an external microphone make a significant difference in the recording quality of this machine? Would you be able to compare the recording quality with e.g. something like the olympus recorders? I have a serious hearing impairment so sound quality is of great importance to me. I cannot seem to find any sample recordings of this machine anywhere. There are some good reviews though. Andre No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. RE: Recording quality of victor reader xtreme
Hi Bruce Quite understandable thanks. For those on the list, I suppose there would be quite a difference in sound quality between e.g. the victor reader xtreme and the edirol recorders? Yes I know you cannot really cojmpare the two machines but I am simply curious. In my situation where recording quality of a conference or meeting is important, would it perhaps be better to go for a more dedicated recorder? Hope I'm not confusing anyone!! Remember that, unlike the Edirol and similar recorders it sin'isn't stereo and the quality is much less. It is very adequate for speech recording though as long as you aren't way back in an audience and reasonably close in. Considering the high level of reduction used the quality is very good with the background hiss being a little more than on a high quality machine. I've not used an external mic but get the feeling that a mic with a high output would be needed. I could possibly upload a sample of a recording made with the Stream if anyone's interested and if I untangle the nest of leads to do it! Cheers, Ray. > Hi Bruce > > Quite understandable thanks. For me this is not such an issue so far. But to get hold of such a unit is a problem. I wrote to irti and they told me they cannot sell to me outside the US. I have a vendor of assistive devices who is quite willing to import the unit for me, but we cannot get any reaction from the manufacturers about this! Anyone knows where we might be able to obtain such a unit internationally? Subject: Cricket - India v Australia Hi all, Sorry I haven't responded sooner but have been out of contact over the last day or so. I am not aware of any audio streaming of this series. ABC local radio has the radio but not streaming rights and is streaming alternative programs while the cricket is on. You might find video streaming with TV commentary from a search such as Google, but be ware this can be misleading as it may merely only show up old data. It is a sorry state of affairs that business factors get in the way of what technology can provide. Things should be better from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa over the coming months. In the case of Australian originated cricket, in recent years the ABC stream has been restricted to within Australia but Cricket Australia has made the feed available internationally. We'll see in November what the story is this year. Good luck to all, Stephen Jolley Melbourne Australia "Too much cricket is barely enough". Voice tracking array microphone
Hi all Does anyone know about something called a voice tracker array microphone. It seems to be a kind of microphone with different elements and an electronic system you can use to make high quality recordings of conferences. I am in the market for some kind of system to make high quality recordings with my newly-acquired Plextalk PTR2. Because I have a hearing loss and need to write minutes from these recordings, I need the best sound quality I can get. Regards Andre No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. RE: Voice tracking array microphone
Hi Garry Thanx! Looking for some way to record conferences and meetings. The important things is that the recording must be clear enough that persons with a hearing loss can understand it. I am not so sure that the internal microphone on the Plextalk ptr2 which I will be using will really be able to do the best job. In the plextalk manual they actually tell you to connect an external microphone if you want good recordings. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Gary King Sent: 27 October 2008 11:38 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Voice tracking array microphone Andre, I searched for the Voice Tracking Array Microphone with Google and found it quite interesting to read about how it works. It contains a number of directional microphone elements and electronically selects whichever element provides the best speech quality for individuals around a conference table, while canceling out unwanted noise. It seems to also be useful for speech recognition applications when you don't want to be tied to a headset. The $250 price tag is a little too steep just to play around with, but for someone who has a particular need, I guess it could be justified. I didn't look for a better price or any reviews. Laptop making strange noises
Hi all A friend of mine has a very strange problem with her new laptop. She uses a xitel device to play music from her laptop through a high quality stereo system. When she connects this device to her laptop while on battery power, everything is fine and the sound is clear. However, as soon as she connects the power chord of her laptop, a lot of noise is generated through her speakers. She had another laptop before which was stolen, and it worked fine. She has already tried to connect the laptop to a different power outlet and also tried to move the xitel further away from the laptop with a USB extension cable without any luck. Any advice from all you knowledgeable folks? Andre No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. RE: LAB TOPS POWER SUPPLIES AND AUDIO CABLES
Hi John In this case we have done all that. The audio cables xitel supplies are heavily shielded Andre -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of DJ DOCTOR P Sent: 14 December 2008 01:47 AM To: PC audio discussion list. Subject: LAB TOPS POWER SUPPLIES AND AUDIO CABLES Hello all list members, I tried putting a transformer that goes to a lab top on top of my stereo, my stereo picked up the noises that transformer was making. But when I moved the transformer away from my stereo, those noises went away. I also used a shielded pare of audio cables to improve the sound of my lab top. So try this in this order. #1. relocate the power supply and or transformer. #2. try a pare of shielded audio cables. Even if you're going to patch your lab top in to your home stereo system, never place the power supply on top of your receiver and or amp because it will amplify the noise that transformer is making. And also, it is always a good idea to use a pare of shielded audio cables when hooking your desktop and or lab top up to your home stereo system. You can get shielded audio cables from: http://www.radioshack.com You will get the best sound from your computer and home stereo system if you do this. My best regards! John. PS. Don't run your speaker wires over your lab top's power supply or it will pick up and transmit that noise too as well. Make sure your audio cables are separated from all power supplies and power cords and you will be fine. Does the sound quality of different software media players differ?
Hi to all on the list I realise that the subject I am talking about now is a rather controversial one but here goes anyhow! Is there a difference in sound quality between different software media players like windows media player, winamp, etc.? I read somewhere that some people recommend Quicktime for audifile use. I have a professional quality emagic soundcard hooked up to a high quality sound system and want to get the best possible sound quality out of the system. If at all possible, I would like a high quality media player with no equalizer setting and no connection to the internet at all! It just needs to be play music. Why on earth would you need equalizer settings if you need a good sound system?!! Andre No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. RE: Does the sound quality of different software media players differ?
Hi all Perhaps I have not explained myself properly. What I am thinking about is the sound quality of a player without using any kind of equalisation at all. The kind of sound setup I have does not need any kind of equalization. A friend of mine said that she can hear a difference in sound quality between winamp and media player with the equalizer disabled in both players. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Dana S. Leslie Sent: 28 December 2008 07:54 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Does the sound quality of different software media players differ? This is funny. I think we have an ambiguity going on here, between two senses of "quality." When I first read the question in the subject line, I took it to refer to the *qualitative* "feel" of the sound produced by different players, as opposed to the *quantitative* numbers at which they might test out in a sound lab; and, in the *qualitative* sense of "quality", I definitely do hear differences between different players. The differences I hear may well be due to different default settings. If I tweaked one player of whose sound I am not that fond, I might well get it to sound close to another player whose sound I prefer. But that is why I prefer the sound of the player whose sound I don't have to tweak to make it sound as I think it ought; because I don't have to tweak it. NONE of this talk of the quality of the sound produced by a player has anything to do with the good vs. bad scoring a player might receive in a sound lab's test of its technical specifications. In this regard, I suspect you are right; all the players would score pretty much alike. - Original Message - From: "Christopher Chaltain" To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Saturday, December 27, 2008 11:17 PM Subject: Re: Does the sound quality of different software media players differ? > I'm no audiophile, and my ears aren't what they used to be, but I > would be a little surprised if there were any noticeable difference in > the quality of the output you get from different media players. And reality is also that equalizer settings does weaken the sound quality somewhat when they are used? You would not necessarily hear this on a set of computer speakers but you may here it on a good hifi stereo system. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Dana S. I, too, can hear a difference in the sound quality between, for example, Winamp and WMP, even when each has its equalizer disabled. In fact, that is how I habitually use them -- with equalizer disabled. But, perhaps, the difference both your friend and I can hear has nothing to do with the technical quality of either player. Perhaps, each could be made to sound like the other, if its equalizer were enabled and sufficiently tweaked. But, since we prefer the sound quality that Winamp produces sans equalizer, why bother with tweaking WMP or Realplayer, to sound like Winamp. It makes more sense just to use Winamp sans equalizer. - Original Message - From: "André van Deventer" To: "'PC Audio Discussion List'" Sent: Sunday, December 28, 2008 2:31 AM Subject: RE: Does the sound quality of different software media players differ? > Hi all > > Perhaps I have not explained myself properly. > > What I am thinking about is the sound quality of a player without > using any kind of equalisation at all. Hi Dana Ah this was exactly the comment I heard from my friend. Thanx. The debate I think will probably neever be resolved about this. There are so many factors which can influence. Another interesting thing: if you use a high quality digital to analog sound device, will there be a difference between playing cds on your computer's cd drive and a cd player? Just curious. Well, I have a VERY high quality stereo sound system, through which I play the output of my computer's sound card. and, with that configuration, Winamp sans equalizer sounds much better, to my ear, than anything I can easily achieve with either WMP or Realplayer, even with their respective equalizers. Hi bob I certainly agree with you about the clarity of the sound as compared to for example bass that is overpowering. Especially since I listen to a lot of acoustic music. As far as appearance on the screen is concerned Winamp out does them all. The best test would be to defeat the equalization settings, and then compare the various players. I would be surprised if there was a noticeable difference between the players. The best test would be to play a familiar piece of music on your system and then do a similar comparison with the various players. You should be looking for familiar music selections with a wide range of frequencies and sustaining notes. If you detect any type of distortion then you can eliminate that particular player. Another idea is to look for a frequency generator on the internet. Download the tomes and play them back. You may want to visit a number of websites in order to get the best download. Personally what I am looking for is not necessarily base notes, but rather a sound that is crisp and clean such as a sustaining guitar, piano or trumpet sound. We all have our audio preferences. What sounds good to me may sound awful to you. I can, for the most part pick out FM radio stations that use optamod equilization in their broadcast chain. Optamod puts out a sound that is very comforting to the ear. . . . . . . - Original Message - From: "Steve Pattison" To: "PC Audio Discussion List" Sent: Friday, December 26, 2008 11:18 PM Subject: Re: Does the sound quality of different software media players differ? > An interesting way to test this would be to play a song to someone > using say Foobar, Winamp and Windows Media Player without them knowing > which player was playing the song and then see if they could identify > the players correctly. Hi John And using an amplifier with vacuum tub es, am I right in thinking you also prefer not to use any kind of equalization at all? Hello guise and girls, I have two sound cards in my computer. One of them for the audio, is going in to a speaker system that uses a pare of vacuum tube amplifiers. The other one, is hooked up to a pare of computer speakers. These are the ones that I listen to jaws through. Rather I'm using WMP WINAMP or Real Player, they all sound the same to me. It all depends on the audio files. If they're over compressed, the vacuum tubes in my amplifiers will let you hear that. My best regards! John. - Original Message - From: "Dana S. Difference between cds for recording music and cds for recording data
Hi to all What exactly is the difference between blank cds that you record music onto and blank cds you use for recording data on? The reason I ask this is because when I got my plextalk ptr2 a few months ago, I received a blank cd with it which according to the manual is specifically meant for burning audio cds. So what is the difference and is it really worth concerning yourself about it? Andre No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. Foobar 2000
Hi all Experimenting with foobar 2000 again after quite a few years. The version I used to have had shortcut keys for things like play, pause etc on the bottom row. Has this now been removed from the newer versions or do you have to designate them yourself? The player seems to be very accessible. But are there any hints regarding the maximum accessibility anyone can give me? Andre No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. Hi all I have an idea that perhaps the two units aim at slightly different segments of the market perhaps? Talthough the xtreme is perhaps better at polaying music for example, the ptr seems to be much more geared towards making good quality recordings.
