I would watch out for the cheap talks or msp -- it is quite possible
that you can never upgrade the product, or in the case of msp, transfer
your license for free like you can with the normal version.  Just check
and know what you are getting into.

Thanks for the info; I think I will purchase the Mobile Speaks because 
according to Humanware, the Orator will cost $450 and to pay that just for a 
Blackbury device, and not one that will work with other phones, is too 
prohibitive for me. I couldn't believe the cost; they must think all blind 
people are rich!

From reading through the text version of the manual that Verizon posted
online, it seems to be a fully functional version of Talks for Windows 
Mobile, and it would probably do everything you want, including text 
messaging, email and Internet.  However, if you look at the answer to 
question 3 on the Answers page that I sent the link for, you will hear the 
word "nontransferable" in the answer about the cost.  This makes me think 
that the $99 price is just for a Talks license for this phone and cannot 
be transferred to another phone later.


Mobile Speaks has a higher initial cost, but it can be transferred to a 
new phone when a better one comes along.


If you have the Blackberry Tour 9630, you can wait for Orator for 
Blackberry to be released by Humanware.  They say it will be released 
soon, but they don't say when, and they don't give a price.  They say it 
will support all of the core Blackberry applications.  This is the only 
Blackberry model they mention specifically in the information on their web 
site.

accessible to blind people.  This phone was from Verizon and contained
the Talks program.  The phone was a Motorola Q-9C and with the speech
program cost $249 with a 2 year contract.  According to Verizon, the
Moto phone was the only one they offered that would do this.  Of course
I was eager to have a phone that would allow me complete access to all
it had to offer.  I was currently using the Env 2 and I could read and
compose text messages, but as far as simple things like setting an alarm
or leaving myself a note, and many other things, it just wouldn't
happen.

I purchased the phone and found it to work fairly well, but it had a few
issues.  It came with Pocket Word that wasn't accessible with the Talks
program.  This left me a bit frustrated because I wanted full use of all
the features of this phone, and so I began to inquire of other types of
phones and different speech programs.  Through my searching, I
discovered that the Talks program Verizon sells and on the Moto phone
was not the fully functioning version of the program.

I was able to return the Moto Q to Verizon for a full refund after
hearing of a program called:  Mobile Speaks.  This program can be used
on Smart Phones running Windows Mobile along with Pocket PC's.  It works
with several different service providers and costs about $300.00.  I was
able to purchase the Moto Q-9C from an individual and used the Mobile
Speaks program for a 30-day trial to make sure I liked all it had to
offer.  This program works great, and I'm able to use features on a
different new phone I've purchased which is called the Ozone from
Verizon.  I kept the Moto to use as a spare, but I wanted a brand-new
phone.

Since all of this, I found out that the Talks program, like Mobile
Speaks is a fully functioning program, but doesn't work with as many
smart phones and with as many carriers.

I might also point out that when you purchase a Smart Phone from Verizon
that has come out after November of last year, that you must have a Data
package with your current plan.  A Data package gives you access to the
Internet and E-mail from your phone.  This is not meant for everyone,
but if you think there might be a reason for this

Verizon enables me to get reception.

Jim and others, this news is depressing and doesn't surprise me;  it was only
a matter of time before M-Audio got around to crappifying the interface for
the Delta series.  I have an M-Audio Solo USB Soundcard and I can see how
accessability will have been truly screwed up for us as this interface is next
to useless for screen reader users.  Looks very pretty oh yes!

I've yet to see the rest of this thread but you do wonder if these companies
couldn't make the software available to a third party to create an accessible
version which the aesthetically conscious could avoid using.  We have no
choice but to be locked  out of the interface.  Shall carry on reading this
thread as maybe someone's come up with alternative soundcards with accessible
interfaces.

From reading through the text version of the manual that Verizon posted
online, it seems to be a fully functional version of Talks for Windows 
Mobile, and it would probably do everything you want, including text 
messaging, email and Internet.  However, if you look at the answer to 
question 3 on the Answers page that I sent the link for, you will hear 
the word "nontransferable" in the answer about the cost.  This makes me 
think that the $99 price is just for a Talks license for this phone and 
cannot be transferred to another phone later.


Mobile Speaks has a higher initial cost, but it can be transferred to a 
new phone when a better one comes along.


If you have the Blackberry Tour 9630, you can wait for Orator for 
Blackberry to be released by Humanware.  They say it will be released 
soon, but they don't say when, and they don't give a price.  They say it 
will support all of the core Blackberry applications.  This is the only 
Blackberry model they mention specifically in the information on their 
web site.

Here is the promised information.

A few months ago I started hearing talk of a Smart Phone that was fully
accessible to blind people.  This phone was from Verizon and contained
the Talks program.  The phone was a Motorola Q-9C and with the speech
program cost $249 with a 2 year contract.  According to Verizon, the
Moto phone was the only one they offered that would do this.  Of course
I was eager to have a phone that would allow me complete access to all
it had to offer.  I was currently using the Env 2 and I could read and
compose text messages, but as far as simple things like setting an 
alarm

or leaving myself a note, and many other things, it just wouldn't
happen.

I purchased the phone and found it to work fairly well, but it had a 
few

issues.  It came with Pocket Word that wasn't accessible with the Talks
program.  This left me a bit frustrated because I wanted full use of 
all

the features of this phone, and so I began to inquire of other types of
phones and different speech programs.  Through my searching, I
discovered that the Talks program Verizon sells and on the Moto phone
was not the fully functioning version of the program.

I was able to return the Moto Q to Verizon for a full refund after
hearing of a program called:  Mobile Speaks.  This program can be used
on Smart Phones running Windows Mobile along with Pocket PC's.  It 
works
with several different service providers and costs about $300.00.  I 
was

able to purchase the Moto Q-9C from an individual and used the Mobile
Speaks program for a 30-day trial to make sure I liked all it had to
offer.  This program works great, and I'm able to use features on a
different new phone I've purchased which is called the Ozon

It is a Windows Mobile phone.  Yes it has a querty keyboard and the
buttons are a bit small.  This might present a small problem for folks
with bigger fingers, but one can get use to it.

You may have a point here.  I guess the reason I thought this was that
Talks seemed, when I compared the functions to Mobile Speaks, to be very
sluggish.  Also there didn't seem to be the same application access.  I
used Talks 2 different times for about 15 days each.  And again it may
be how each software package was written, and the platform they are
written for.

I have found out recently that AT&T is selling Mobile Speaks for the
$89.00 that you mentioned.  I would be very curious to find out if it is
the fully functioning MSS and whether the license can be transferred to
other devices.

Hello!

For years, I used Roxio Easy CDDVD Creator and found it totally accessible; 
however, when I migrated to Easy Media Creator, I found the product almost 
totally unaccessible; and now they email me about Roxio Creator 2010 Pro.  If 
anyone has used this product or know anything about it, do let me know.  Should 
I purchase this product or not.  I did purchase RecordNow, which was previously 
accessible enough for my use, and Easy CDDVD Copy, which I have never used but 
got it so my wife could put some of her Kodak film onto usable everyday DVD/CD 
players.

Another problem that you may have is that, if you install ServicePack 3for 
XP, it will not allow you to install an earlier version of the DeltaPanel 
software than the latest one.  Can anyone else varify whether this is or is 
not the case?  It certainly is on my box.

When using Roxio starting with version 7, you have to use the jaws curser to 
bring up the different menus. inside these are more menus to click on, but 
once you do this, it gets easier to work with because of the list trees that 
come up when clicking on the right graphic. you should be able to have your 
wife help label them or use the trial and error method to figure out what 
the graphics do. there will be the source and destination views. you will 
need the jaws cursor to get to the correct view. then you can route the PC 
cursor to the respective view you want. you will be able to add or delete 
tracks you want to burn and so on. you can adjust the write speed and 
destination drive as long as you are patient and careful. you had better try 
a trial version to see if you are comfortable with the program before 
plunking down any money. I find that Nero is easier these days to work with. 
you may even consider Premier Cd burner which is supposed to be made for 
blind people.

Installing Recordnow

Hello List!

I purchased Recordnow recently and, when I started installing it, I got a 
question as to which conflicting program I wanted to uninstall in order to have 
Recordnow work properly.  The program suggested that I uninstall something that 
sounded like "Microsoft Dotnet Framework.  What is this and would uninstalling 
that windows program cause problems with other programs, such as Nero or 
others?  I see that, if I take the customize installation choice, I get a 
choice of uninstalling something with dotnet in it.  Could Recordnow be 
conflicting with Nero or something or wanting me to only run Recordnow like 
programs did in the past?  Just tell me how to install recordnow on my XP and 
Vista machines as easy as possible if possible.

Thats really funny since talks out performs Moble speak on my E71 and N95.

Before you start it, I know they are two different platforms and i suspect 
that my two units have a lot more horse power then that ozone unit.

I have found out recently that AT&T is selling Mobile Speaks for the
$89.00 that you mentioned.  I would be very curious to find out if it is
the fully functioning MSS and whether the license can be transferred to
other devices.

anything selling Talks for $99. AT&T sells Mobile Speak for $89, and I
think that's the same product you'd get from Code Factory for quite a
bit more. I suspect the price is more the result of a deal made between
Nuance and Verizon or AT&T and code Factory than it is the fact that a
stripped down version of the screen reader is being sold.

Also, you get a fully functional 30-day trial before you have to
purchase, which allows you some time to acquire the funds.  The company
that I purchased my Mobile Speaks from has a 6 or 12 month purchase
plan.  They do charge a small fee for this, but it makes things a little
easier if you can't get the money at once.

You are able to access the Internet fine from this phone.  You do
however, need to have good cell service in the area in which you live.
You can set the phone up to retrieve your Internet E-mail, and it is not
difficult to read texts or E-mails.  I wouldn't use a phone as my main
source for surfing the net, but the feature is there should one need it.

can adjust the ASIO buffer size etc in Control Pannel, and many of the
features are controlled with physical dip-switches on the device. It has RCA

Tascam CD Burner

Hi All,

This question is for anyone who uses a Tascam CD Burner.

When you burn a CD from a record album or cassette, you need to mark the 
tracks in between songs in order to be able to go from one track to another. 
However, what I want to do is put a CD in the single-play slot of my CD 
carousel and then copy that to a blank CD using the Tascam.  Now my question 
is this, since the CD already has the tracks marked between songs, do you 
still need to do that manually or will the Tascam pick that up from the 
master CD?

Thanks much for any help you can give.  I've never copied a CD this way, so 
I am not sure how it works.

The Edirol UA1EX has actually been discontinued and is now replaced with the
Edirol UA1G.

I have the Just a follow up to the previous email regarding your order. The
Edirol UA1EX has actually been UA1G and it works extremely well.

So which ever card you get, both will serve the purpose.

Wel had my box rebuilt severl times and the driver off my delta 66 CD 
installed and is accessible.  I will check with my guy to ask if he updated 
the service pack before installing the drivers.

Things are always so differnt from PC to PC.

I'm in the US, and I got mny copy of Talks from beyondsight.com.

Note that this is for the Symbian version of Talks. Verizon is the only source 
for the Windows Mobile version of Talks as far as I know.

You might want to double check me on this, but I don't believe you can buy 
Talks for the Windows Mobile platform except through Verizon and only 
preinstalled on specific phones. I believe that Nuance will mnake a Windows 
Mobile version of Talks available that you can urchase separately and install 
on any supported Windows Mobile phone, but this hasn't happened yet.

Talks seemed, when I compared the functions to Mobile Speaks, to be very
sluggish.  Also there didn't seem to be the same application access.  I
used Talks 2 different times for about 15 days each.  And again it may
be how each software package was written, and the platform they are
written for.

I have found out recently that AT&T is selling Mobile Speaks for the
$89.00 that you mentioned.  I would be very curious to find out if it is
the fully functioning MSS and whether the license can be transferred to
other devices.

What are you comparing it to? I believe it's the only Talks sold for the
Windows Mobile platform, so I think it is the fully working version.

Just as Code Factory has different products for the Symbian, Windows
Mobile and Pocket PC platforms, Nuance has different products for the
Symbian and now Windows Mobile platform. I think people need to be
careful when talking about Talks that they're clear to specify the
Symbian versus Windows Mobile version.

I'm also not sure why you're saying Verizon is getting away with
anything selling Talks for $99. AT&T sells Mobile Speak for $89, and I
think that's the same product you'd get from Code Factory for quite a
bit more. I suspect the price is more the result of a deal made between
Nuance and Verizon or AT&T and code Factory than it is the fact that a
stripped down version of the screen reader is being sold.

probably why they get away with selling it for the price they do.

Mobile Speaks does not work at this time for the Black Berry phones, but
it does work quite well with the Ozone, that is the phone I have.

You might talk to Verizon and they may let you have the good price on
the Ozone, I believe it was $49.00 with a 2 year contract.  If you can
afford it, I would get the Ozone without speech, and then you can
purchase Mobile Speaks.  I realize it is pricy, but you can transfer the
software to other Smart phones in the future should you decide at some
point to get another phone.  Of course, you can only run the software on
1 phone at a time, but when you need to, the transfer is quite simple.

Also, you get a fully functional 30-day trial before you have to
purchase, which allows you some time to acquire the funds.  The company
that I purchased my Mobile Speaks from has a 6 or 12 month purchase
plan.  They do charge a small fee for this, but it makes things a little
easier if you can't get the money at once.

You are able to access the Internet fine from this phone.  You do
however, need to have good cell service in the area in which you live.
You can set the phone up to retrieve your Internet E-mail, and it is not
difficult to read texts or E-mails.  I wouldn't use a phone as my main
source for surfing the net, but the feature is there should one need it.
