Feeling like an idiot never felt so good!

2006-11-01 Thread Larry Higgins
Hi, and hope the subject line got your attention .

What I am talking about is the rather late discovery of 24 bit audio
on my Audigy soundcard this past weekend. I was reading some old mail
on another list, and happened to read a discussion about the new
audio leveling options in Winamp 5.3 which are found in the playback
options dialog box. Now here's where my idiocy comes in. I've been
using this card for the past four years or so, and never realized
that the option for using 24byt audio was to be found there. I
frankly had never looked there in order to make any adjustments up to
that point. I have been using the MAD encoder plugin for a while, and
had tried upping the encoder to 24 bit, but with no satisfactory
results. Well after changing the option to reflect 24 bit in winamp,
then upping to 24 bit in the decoder, I experienced nothing short of
an epiphany. I simply couldn't believe the difference it made in
overall audio output, and range. I am now able to follow bass lines
that I couldn't before, and much more. Anyway, the reason I'm telling
this story at the risk of having my idiocy confirmed, I would like to
know just how much of a difference a 32byt sound card could actually
make with mp3 files, and could I stand it ? And on top of that, if
the change would truly be worthwhile, what would be the best and
most economical choice in soundcards today. I guess a case could be
made for just continuing with the Creative line, especially since
I've been so taken with it's performance, but would be open to suggestions.

Thanks,

Larry

Specs required for a decent DAW

2006-11-01 Thread Rick Alfaro
Well, little by little I am dipping my toes into the very complicated and
confusing world of recording and editing music on a computer. My first step
was to order an audio recording device with a midi interface as well as the
necessary inputs for a decent mic and keyboard if necessary. I am now
toying with the idea of possibly having a dedicated machine just for audio
stuff. I haven't decided yet whether it will be a very hefty laptop, or a
very small desktop, but I would like to gather opinions on what the minimum
specs should be for a decent DAW. Keep in mind that I said decent, and not
spectacular. I don't have a lot of money to plunk down on this, so it will
either be a used laptop, or perhaps I'll have my Son build me a small
footprint desktop. I am not an audio engineer by any stretch nor do I play
professionally, so the scope of any projects would be usually quite simple.

I would never be recording more than 1 audio track at once, but there could
conceivably be a few audio tracks as part of the entire project, for
example, a vocal track with a couple of other vocal tracks doing harmony
parts. The rest would be all midi, using either my keyboards as sound
sources, or controllers for any soft synths I might try using.

What would be the minimum I would need in terms of memory, and cpu speed? I
know the HD is also an issue and this is one thing that concerns me when
considering a laptop since they usually use 5400rpm IDE drives. Would a
laptop cut it if it had a reasonably fast cpu?

Regarding the audio/midi interface I ordered, for now, it is going to be USB
2.0. I do understand and agree with the fact that FireWire would have been
much better, but the problem I ran into was that I had to spend quite a bit
more money to get the features I needed in a comparable device using
FireWire. Since I am just getting started with this stuff, I didn't want to
spend quite that much just yet. If I find that I can actually get somewhere
with all this, I certainly don't mind upgrading to something better in the
future that uses FireWire and has a few other nice features as well. The
Tascam US122L that I purchased was only $149 and can accommodate anything I
would use for now, and it is very simple to use, or at least that's the way
it seems. When looking for something comparable but with Firewire, the only
stuff that appealed to me was at least $300. If things go well, I won't
have a problem ditching the US122L and going for something with the I/O I
want and perhaps a control surface as well, using FireWire.

So, what do you guys think? What are the bare bone specs I need to be
reasonably happy? Thanks in advance for any ideas. BTW, my ballpark budget
for this machine would be about $800. I think with that amount, I can
easily find a good used laptop, or purchase what I need to build something.

2006-11-01 Thread Rick Alfaro
Jim,

The R09 is definitely very useable. It has menus, but the menus do not
wrap, and there aren't that many of them. There are also some dedicated
switches on the back of the unit that do not require menus. In addition,
all of the controls on the device are logically laid out and very easy to
use. I have had one for about a month now, and love it. I suggest you head
on over to www.blindcooltech.com and check out some of the several podcasts
there dealing with the R09. There are a few there done by Neal Ewers that
are excellent.

Well Dana, if you got it, you definitely should use it. The
difference is simply astounding. As I said, I am using the MAD
encoder plugin, and it is giving me simply unbelievable results. I'd
be glad to send you a copy to try if you'd like. I don't think it has
been updated in a while, but it is very good.

Rick, the Edirol R-09 is at the top of the list for Christmas this year for me.
The Gentlemen at the store let me open a factory sealed box, and let me play
with
one to my heart's content. out of the box it was ready to record on once I put
in
the SD card and plugged in the power adapter. I was able to play a recording I
made, and with a little help, determined that I could delete files on the unit
itself too. I could monitor what I was doing with a pair of phones through the
headphone jack before I made a recording. I was pleased with the performance,
and
next time I go to Hollowood Music, I am going to get one.

2006-11-01 Thread Dana S. Leslie
In the Winamp Properties, Playback section, look for the check box labeled
"allow 24 bit." Check it.

I can't say I notice much of a difference. But I'm not using the MAD encoder
Larry spoke of, as yet.

2006-11-01 Thread Larry Higgins
Oh well bruce, there are lots of things in this world I don't
understand, but you'd have to hear it I guess in order to appreciate
the difference. I'm not admittedly the most expert in the world when
it comes to PC audio, but I do have a good ear, and I don't think
that it would even take the most excellent of ears to be able to
notice, if nothing else, the fullness and increase in detail when
listening to these mp3s at 24 bit. I mean, what can I say, I wasn't
expecting much either .

Keep in mind, I'm using the MAD encoder, so I can't speak to how
well the Nulsoft mp3 input plugin would perform at that level. Just
give it a whirl and tell us what ya think. Just be careful to
configure both the playback and encoder settings correctly.

2006-11-01 Thread Larry Higgins
Dana, I'll be happy to send you the encoder if you would like. I've
looked at the properties of the Nulsoft plugin for mp3s, but didn't
see any adjustment that could be made to take advantage of the 24 bit
setting. The MAD encoder can be set from 8 up to 32 bit.

Hi Sam,
Try going into you're control panel and uninstalling it. Or you could go to
ms config and try that, or which is the run file from you're start menu, or
try regedit from the run menu from you're start menu. You also might try
going into you're computer hit w fro winap and then delte that, go into my
computer and delte everything that has to do with winap. Sometimes there
are things that just will not remove from a computer. Dave

Do 32-bit cards even exist yet? I've not heard of any, but yet many
recording programs support recording for what would be that format if it
comes out.

Go desktop, unless you plan on taking your act on the road with you.
Even then, a small desktop could conceivably be rigged with a handle
or custom road case.

Never say never.

If you're going to mix audio and MIDI, it's either NTrack for fifty
bucks, or Sonar plus CakeTalking or SonarTalking, whatever they call
it this week, for a combined cost of nearly four hundred. NTrack is a
good program, but not intuitively obvious to operate, and its manual
has the egregiously annoying property of having the keynames omitted
because they weren't put into the document as text to start with.

Laptop CPU's barely break the 2ghz mark because of heat dissipation
problems. They're all this incipid Cintrino class machine which
operates at about 1.73ghz. I'd recommend not a byte less than a gig
of memory, and not a rev less than a 7200rpm drive.

There's always PCMCIA, ya know.

No need for a private message where public ones would be appreciated
by more readers. The bottom line is, it's an excellent device,
extremely blind-user-friendly, very operable, makes fine recordings,
etc., etc. There are lots of recorded programs produced by blind
people using the device that explain its ins and outs, as well as a
file containing the complete menu navigation. In short, you'll really
like it, it's a one-of-a-kind well-thought-out device.

Oh yes, when you buy yours, remember to pick up at least one 2
gigabyte memory card. You'll probably want two. You can find them for
less than $50 apiece. If you plan on doing a lot of high-fidelity
recording, you'll need them. Lithium ion batteries are a good
investment, too. Somebody's even rigged some batteries up into a
strap-on rechargeable pack for the thing. If you want information on
that, I'll look around and find the message. I know I kept it because
I keep meaning to get it for my own unit.

Hello listers,

I have pasted below a Sendspace link for downloading the MAD plugin.
I've had a number of requests to send, but all but one of my file
attachments have bounced for being too big. I don't really understand
why because the file is only 145kb in size. Anyway, I hope it will
make as great a positive difference in your listening experience as
it has my own.

Re: Specs required for a decent DAW

I would say that anything you have should contain 512 mb of memory, and a
sound blaster card, which ever one you prefer. You will also want plenty of
hard drive space for file storage. and as fast a processor as you can get
away with.

RE: Got a new computer, need xp media center advice

2006-11-01 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Norma, actually there are some great keyboard shortcuts in Media Center.
Windows+ALT+Enter will take you into the main Media Center menu. Control+T
will get you to My TV and Control+o gets you to Recorded TV. Control+G gets
you to the guide. You can activate those radio buttons simply by selecting
the one you want and pressing Enter. I love my Media Center and watch a lot
more TV because of it.

Hi Rob,

Here are some instructions I had prepared for another person who wanted to
know about recording with the Media Center: HTH Norma

When you enter on Media Center, you will land in a list which looks similar
to this:My Music, Radio, HP Image Zone, HP Tunes, more programs, settings,
Play DVD, Online spotlight, my videos and my TV. If you hit enter while on
"MY TV" it will take you to a set of buttons, which are Live TV, Recorded
TV, Guide, Search and Movies. To schedule a program to record, enter on
recorded TV, then hit schedule. Now you are in a list which includes radio
buttons to select by date or by title. To activate these buttons, you need
to click with the right mouse button. Doing this will bring up further
options which are pretty much self explanatory.
Do you have your cable or satellite TV coaxial cable going directly into
your Media Center? If not, when you schedule something to record, you will
have to make sure that your cable or satellite box is tuned to the channel
you need to record from. If you have your coaxial going directly into your
media center, you will be fine. Regarding the guide section, you should be
able to arrow up and down and look at what programs are currently running
and I think you should be able to look up to 14 days ahead but I'm not sure.
I know you can schedule a recording up to 14 days in advance. A cool thing
about the guide is if your cable or satellite is wired directly into your
MC, you can just hit enter on a program in the guide and the program will
come up on your TV. I love this feature.

RE: Feeling like an idiot never felt so good!

2006-11-01 Thread Reed Poynter
Hi listers,

When it comes to this sound stuff, I'm just learning.

When I look at the audio for my fujitsu s7010dc-3 notepad specs, it says,
Audio
"SigmaTel ST9751T Codec, 6 channels sound support
Dolby Headphone Utility to emulate realistic surround sound using
conventional stereo headphones on DVD models"

I don't understand! Is this referring to the actual sound card or the
software that drives it or what?
And, where might I find the specs for what ever this is? I've done a quick
search on the net but don't find anything meaningful.

Hi:

You can also obtain the latest version of the plugin from my server at:
ftp.compuconference.com

Just navigate to Winamp stuff and download the plugin.

Cheers.

Re: the MAD plugin

2006-11-01 Thread Larry Higgins
Jim, just when was the last update released?

Hey, never mind. I forgot to send the above question. I just
downloaded the new version and instantly installed it. I started
playing some Roy Orbison, and I'm telling you, this new one really
kicks some ass. I just wish there was some documentation along with
the .dll file, because it is a lot larger, with a lot more features.
You could really get lost.

Thanks for the heads up,

Larry

RE: Specs required for a decent DAW

2006-11-01 Thread Rick Alfaro
Hi Steve.

Thanks for the response. I neglected to mention in my original message that
Sonar was definitely my choice along with Jsonar for the scripts, but the
$800 budget was strictly for hardware so the cost of Sonar is not a problem.
The Jsonar scripts are free, so I'll probably just use those for now.

I have just purchased the Edirol R9 and am looking forward to recording
expected special highlights of our visit to family and friends on the East
Coast.

Gary, since you mentioned this in your post I wonder if you or someone could
give me a description of how to delete files. I know it can be done but the
person who did it on the original sd card was sighted and was purely going
by the printed instructions. I'd like to have a little experience with that
aspect of things before we leave this coming Saturday.

Steve, if you could send me the info on the rechargeable pack I'd appreciate
it.

I downloaded several of the podcasts from blind Cool Tech but don't remember
any actual demos of file deletion. I can't remember the date of the last
file I downloaded but I wonder if there is there any program I'm missing and
should pick up? Has there been anything on the subject uploaded within the
past four weeks or so; just a guess. I believe I downloaded five or six
presentations. Are there other sources for tutorials I can download
quickly?

Thanks in advance to all for any help you may be able to give me.

Pam

Rick, the Edirol R-09 is at the top of the list for Christmas this year for
me.
The Gentlemen at the store let me open a factory sealed box, and let me play
with one to my heart's content. out of the box it was ready to record on
once I put in the SD card and plugged in the power adapter. I was able to
play a recording I made, and with a little help, determined that I could
delete files on the unit itself too. I could monitor what I was doing with a
pair of phones through the headphone jack before I made a recording. I was
pleased with the performance, and next time I go to Hollowood Music, I am
going to get one.

May I ask where you guys are purchasing, and what seems to be the cheapest
price for them?
Currently, I'm looking at no less than $400. Is that correct?
Jim

2006-11-01 Thread Peter Scanlon
Hey this is great, thanks. I am also about to buy one. Is the manual in text
format somewhere?
Also I hope the company is getting some feedback from us blind users so that
future models will be equally blind friendly.
