Windows Media Player No Longer Works On My Desktop PC
Please forgive the cross-post; but this one really has me stumped. Saturday I closed Windows Media Player 10 on my desktop PC compatible running Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2 on a broadband DSL connection. Later that day I attempted to play another stream which launches WMP again and I received an error saying it could not play the selected media type. I tried launching another stream with the same result. I looked in the error information center and then went to check file `types and settings. I did discover that the "use proxy server" box was checked. I certainly hadn't recalled checking it but I unchecked it. Still nothing. I decided to try playing a stream through ACB Radio's Media Player setup; and it actually played, but the stream stopped and started. As I write this I'm wondering if that's because I unchecked the proxy box. I usually play it through Winamp but have played through Media Player and decided this would be a test. Later I closed out the WMP stream and reconnected with Winamp with no dropouts. Yesterday I decided to try re-installing WMP10. I un-installed it, allowed the rollback to Series 9 to take place, and re-installed 10. Wouldn't play. In desperation I decided to go back to 9 temporarily so I could at least listen to a stream I wanted to hear at the time. I let the rollback happen, tried to launch a stream, and once again nothing. I had been having trouble with a particular stream wherein it either lost a lot of packets or, once that seemed under control, it suddenly developed a sound like an off-frequency AM radio station. I don't see how either of these issues would have had anything to do with WMP itself, but thought I would mention it just in case someone sees a connection I don't. I also noticed an application in Control Panel called Windows Media Connect or something like that, but when I thought I'd try un-installing it to see if there were any difference the warning said that other programs might be affected. The programs it mentioned didn't make sense to me, JAWS video intercept for example, but I didn't want to take a chance of further messing things up and so didn't install it. This must have come through as a Windows Update because it's one I don't remember seeing before. Also, add/remove programs listed it is frequently used, then showed a last used date of May 20. Go figure if you can, and if you can, please explain this one to me. We like several streams which use WMP, so this is really frustrating. I wonder if anyone has any ideas what I might try next. As Always, any help would be appreciated. Re: Dealing with the sync list in Windows Media Player 10
Hi, Wayne and list! The Disney Mix Stick is what I was calling the Tinker Bell Mix Stick a week or so ago on this list. It's an MP3 player geared for kids; some have pictures of Disney characters on them, but you can get one (which I did) that's chrome colored and has no picture. It costs about $40 and uses SD cards. It comes with 128 meg memory but you can use up toe 1 gig, so say the instructions. I got it because I needed something cheap, accessible, that plays those drat wma/drm files. I got mine from Target and like it fine! It really is pretty simple to operate, meant for a six year old, aftger all. hth Peace, Kathy Kathy Szinnyey [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Original Message - From: "Whitefang" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list. Hi The beta scripts have a lot of extra functionality I think. In Jonathan's tutorial, he also recommends that you use the beta scripts on the website - I think they are numbered 2.75 or something like that. Update On My Windows Media Problem
Well, I just did the one thing I should have done while troubleshooting this problem. I have just successfully played two cd's using Media Player. Therefore I have to conclude that the problem is not with my player, but with my connection protocols to the Internet. Now, this one may be simple to fix for those who know what they're doing; but it is really out of my league, at least so far. Perhaps someone can now tell me what to do next to return my Media Player to full functionality. Also, I would like to go back to WMP 10, but I'm also wondering whether I should move all the way to 11. I get the impression that 11 is highly concerned with visual effects and digital rights. Am I correct? What results have others had with this app? Thanks in advance. When this is fixed I promise to go back to my former ways and not become a prodigious cross-poster. A very elusive file
This file is called kstvtun.ax, and is supposed to be in the Windows XP Service Pack 2 disk, which I don't have. There are three other Windows XP computers in this house besides this one, and I have searched them all. We of course don't seem to have any XP SP2 disks around. Wouldn't you know! I have searched on Google; I have searched on the product's page, with no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where this file could be hiding, or where I could get it? The product I have is an ATI PVR, and this must be some kind of tuning file. Every time I plug in, it says found new hardware, and says that it needs this file. But where is it? Only the shadow knows; and he's keeping quiet about it.
