Naming Conventions for Publishing Modules Only To Authors Directory
Hello, Due to genericness of keywords, couldn't find in archive: Remembered hearing about a method of naming modules that leave them in your authors directory but doesn't publish them them into the namespace indices. I'd like to upload a few things of which there are either already too many of (none of which are quite right) or I haven't recieved enough feedback on to feel comfortable littering namespaces with yet. Name: Scott Lanning Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] URL: n/a User-ID: SLANNING Plans: DBIx::Abstract::Connection, a module to allow general/abstract connection using DBI. Currently DBIx::Abstract supports a specific way of connecting to DBI using DBD::mysql, and other drivers can be used by passing in the DSN. The advantages of my module include: 1) extensibility: easier to add support for drivers, 2) modularity: factors out connection in case you don't require full DBIx::Abstract functionality, 3) abstraction: ideally you never need to use a driver-specific DSN, 4) emulation: I'm trying to emulate useful features in case a driver/database doesn't support it; for example, MySQL supports using ~/.my.cnf client configuration PostgreSQL doesn't, so I would allow the user to have such a configuration file for PostgreSQL, too. That way you have an abstract way to centralize your client connection parameters regardless of the database.

But as I said, I am happy for you guys to guide us in the name. Filesys::Virtual definitely the right space if not top level. We have just got the GnomeVFS compiling into the VFS structure. VFS is written around the idea that there are many ways to do this. One way is to use the many perl modules already out there and provide this one polymorphic view of the world. Another is to use one of the many (not so portable) libraries such as GnomeVFS. VFS is currently being written and has two libraries intended to be released. 1) Pure Perl - using other perl modules to implement the underlying structure. 2) XS to GnomeVFS - to allow for the more advanced functionallity of VFS The Pure Perl version should work nicely cross platform, but the GnomeVFS version is far more bound to a smaller set of platforms. I am very flexible. How about Hardware::Power::Regulator::Plasmatronic although... Regulator = Power, maybe we could go Hardware::Regulator::Plamatronic Could also be Power::Regulator::Plasmatronic but that is not an existing name space. I am really happy with any feedback. Device is the right top-level namespace. But to replace Regulator with the word Power is probably not totally desirable. what other sort of power devices are there? i guess regulators are different than batteries, but i can't think of other examples. In a solar powered house (like mine) there is - Regulator = Controls the power in and out of the batteries - Inverter = Turns low voltage DC to high voltage AC - Charger = When the batteries are just too low - Current Meter = Many current meters is the Plasmatronic a product name or a company name? that is, does Plasmatronic completely identify the device, so is it like calling every modem a 3Com? if it is very specific, you might get around the Regulator part of the name. Technically it is a company, but their products are called things like Plasmatronic 40 Plasmatronic 20 Plasmatronic 60 My code handles all of them, there is slight differences in scaling factors of the raw data, but the protocol is the same. Let me think, how to combine the words Device, Power, Regulator and Plasmatronic. How about. Device::Power::PlasmatronicRegulator; I guess the only problem with the above is if we end up one day in the future having a common Regulator API (eg: Device::Regulator) which abstracts all of them. I have two new modules to register RPM::Make - make an rpm; compatible with rpm v 3.* and 4.*; very CLEAN RPM::Update - check against an existing ftp/nfs/harddisk repository (The making of an rpm is currently scripted at http://www.cpan.org/authors/id/S/SH/SHARRISON/make_rpm-1.17.pl) -- Scott Harrison
Re: Module submission RPM::Make
Dear Sir Phillip: http://search.cpan.org/search?mode=module&query=rpm I have already downloaded rjray's software (as well as veltzer's). >From what I can see, the RPM-Tools software is unique in its method of making RPMs and checking against an FTP/NFS repository (well at least we can update outside of RedHat network). (Believe me, if there had been really good perl software that existed for that a couple years ago, I would have jumped at the opportunity to use it.) I am also very confident about the functionality of my software (it works reliably and works well with a reasonable range of possible options). The current versions that I posted could greatly benefit from a better API. For instance, I can foresee RPM::Update working with rjray's RPM::Database. And, the subroutine name "execute" could ummm ... be better. However, in light of the RPM version 3 to version 4 transition I am hesitant to trust the RPM /var/lib/ databases beyond what the command-line usage delivers. I am very much delighted to collaborate, cooperate, see my work digested by the jaws of another programmer, etc. I am also trying to get together some DPKG-ing perl modules. I want to build my software packages in a one-line command! And, update them in a controllable one-line command! And incorporate that simplicity in a bigger effort... http://lpml.sourceforge.net/. Such is my rambling from over here at least. I do foresee myself actively curating this freeware, so in terms of delegated effort, maybe it makes sense for RPM-Tools to be a separate CPAN package for a while. PAUSE access request
Dear CPAN/PAUSE Administrators; I respectfully request access to PAUSE. Name: Scott Walters Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] URL: http://illogics.org - professional, http://www.slowass.net - personal UserID: SWALTERS, 2nd choice, SDWALTERS I've written a large number of modules over the years for various purposes, and presented them at Phoenix Perl Mongers with good reception. I've read the FAQ carefully, and promise to coordinate my package naming with authors of modules in those spaces, and to search http://www.xray.mpe.mpg.de/mailing-lists/modules/ before naming or uploading anything. As examples of what I wish to upload, I've updated Mmap-0.10.pm to work on modern Perls, protect against deadly reallocation, offer an OO constructor and tied interface. To be coordinated with original author. A system for exposing SQL, HTML, XML, SMTP fragments from a database or HTML file as functions, allowing tight data and code coupling without being HTML centric, and allowing data reuse and editing. Vastly improved FuzzyLogic module, with subclassed combinatrics behavior, OO, overloaded operators, designed to be useful for real applications instead of for demonostration. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, -scott walters

Name: Scott Cruzen Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Preferred user ID: SIC Module Description: I have a module that acts as a wrapper around Crypt::* block ciphers to make them operate in CFB or OFB modes. There's been some interest in efnet #perl about this. I think it would be better if it was integrated into the Cryptix code, but the Cryptix web page says that the Cryptix Perl code is no longer actively maintained. I'd like to use the names Crypt::CFB and Crypt::OFB in keeping with the Crypt::CBC tradition. Later, Scott

It can also take existing code and package those scripts quickly. It defines an easy way to add tests which are a part of the source code for both scripts and modules. * I worked with Randy Kobes over the last 6 months to use his "sdist" script for a general project solution. Overtime we have added enough to it, that it can be a "multi-file generation script". I would put it under the same category, CPAN. I updated the script to be self-testing in the paradigm of Test.pm and Test::Harness -- it encourages the use of module tests that are tied to the source code of the module.
Request to register as developer
Greetings, I think I have something to offer the world. Here's my info in the order you asked for it at http://www.cpan.org/modules/04pause.html#registering. Please consider establishing a developer account for me. === Info === Name : Scott Thomason Email : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Website : industrial-linux.org UserID : SCOTTHOM Description : XML::RSSLite bdpf Extract broken XML from RSS/RDF/SN/WL format Background : After recently reading about XML::RSS, I decided to give it a try. Several hours later, I was still only capable of extracting about 40% of the open content cataloged at xmltree.com. I realized that the majority of open content syndicators are not very good at writing valid RSS XML. My goal is to write a module that extracts all the open content that is available, and be much less concerned about XML compliance. This module currently parses all but a handful of the XML URLs cataloged at xmltree.com. Rather than rely on XML::Parser, it uses heuristics and good old-fashioned Perl regular expressions. It stores the data in a simple hash structure, and "aliases" certain tags so that when done, you can count on having the minimal data necessary for re-constructing a valid RSS file. This means you get the basic title, description, and link for a channel and its items. Anything else present in the hash is a bonus :) This module extracts more usable links by parsing "scriptingNews" and "weblog" formats in addition to RDF & RSS. It also "sanitizes" the for best results. The munging includes: - Removing html tags to leave plain text - Eliminating objectionable characters - Using tags when is empty - Using misplaced urls in when is empty - Ripping links from if required - Limiting content to http/ftp links - Joining relative urls to the site base In the near future I plan to strengthen the weblog parsing, and add a routine to generate valid RSS output from the result hash via XML::RSS, plus contact
My first cpan contribution
I'm cpan user "scotthom". I uploaded a few files, notably RSSLite.pm. I'm operating under the assumption this should be called "XML::RSSLite". More info is at http://industrial-linux.org/RSSLite/ Please let me know how to proceed from here... ---scott

Re: Win32::FTDI::FTD2XX Fatal error U1077
The Windows security model has changed since that was written. Likely what happening is windows vista/2008 security is preventing the script from copying the files into the locked Windows system directory - you will likely need to run the command window using the "run as administrator" option then execute the installation from that. let's talk about SOAP::WSDL!
Hello, I would like to take over the SOAP::WSDL distribution. It's a terrible module, and I'm a terrible module maintainer, so it's a perfect match. It looks like the author hasn't appeared in six years (or maybe ever): https://rt.cpan.org//Dist/Display.html?Queue=SOAP-WSDL I dropped him an email the other day at his email address listed in the POD offering to help with a bug fix release. I haven't heard back in early 22 HOURS. I have little intention of turning it into something wonderful, but I'm pretty reasonable about dealing with requests that come through github, and I spent a day fixing the bugs that keep tests from passing on 5.19.9 (which is the version that all of the cool kids run). https://github.com/scrottie/SOAP-WSDL/commits/master I even tried not to use too many swear words, though I really wanted to. This thing was written with excessive cleverness. I feel that this is an important module with a lot of business application that should be kept basically working, and at least the documentation updated with its problems and limitations. (I know that 22 hours is pretty preliminary, but I wanted to send a preliminary email here and then follow up on it later.) Thanks, -scott

If this is a moderated list, how does so much spam make it through?
I'm at a loss to see how so much spam seems to make it into this list, when there is not nearly as much elsewhere on the other nntp.perl.org groups. *sigh*
