Module submission Verilog::CodeGen

2002-11-05 Thread Perl Authors Upload Server

The following module was proposed for inclusion in the Module List:

  modid:   Verilog::CodeGen
  DSLIP: anphp
  description: Object-oriented Verilog code generator
  userid: WVDB (Wim Vanderbauwhede)
  chapterid:9 (Language_Interfaces)
  communities:

  similar:

  rationale:

Verilog::CodeGen is a set of modules and scripts to generate
Verilog code in a flexible way. I think it belongs in the Verilog::
namespace because it's and interface to the Verilog language.
Originally I called it DeviceLibs, but I think CodeGen better
reflects the purpose.

It is different from all other Verilog:: modules because it
generates Verilog code, while the other modules work on existing
Verilog code.

The module offers a number of methods to create objects that
generate the Verilog code based on the object's attributes. This
makes it very easy to create completely parametrizable designs. I
think the module is useful for designers doing non-standard Verilog
designs, like asynchronous logic, or analog designs in VerilogA.

A GUI to control the complete process of creating objects, adding
them to the device library, and testing is provided, but the modules
do not require the GUI.

  enteredby: WVDB (Wim Vanderbauwhede)
  enteredon: Tue Nov 5 11:02:23 2002 GMT

The resulting entry would be:

Verilog::
::CodeGen anphp Object-oriented Verilog code generator WVDB

The package is a "SAX driver" which parse non-XML data into XML in the
form of SAX2 events. In this case, the vCard is munged into vcard-xml.

we decided not to put specific applications of XML into XML::*.

This is me slapping my forehead because I know that and keep forgetting it
*and* I agree with the sentiment.

> perhaps there is another top level namespace this would fit under?

I am not wed to the package name but was simply trying to follow what
others have done.

I am thinking specifically of XML::SAXDriver::(Excel|CVS) Granted neither
one of those have defined XML applications (I don't think they do,
anyway.)

I'm not even all that wild about vcard-xml since it doesn't handle
X-CUSTOM fields by default but decided that it wasn't worth muddying the
waters and re-inventing the wheel.

I am open to suggestions. Perhaps vCard::XML::SAXDriver?

My only other comment would be that it kind of breaks the whole
XML::SAXDriver::* namespace if it can't/shouldn't contain anything whose
XML output has been formalized now or in the future.

I sent a submission request to the list a long time ago, and thought I had
been given the go-ahead. I only now have a semi-stable implementation.

This module was given a green light by the list as well. As I explained then,
this is an analogue to Parse::PerlConfig, except that this is human-readable.
The author of that module and I had worked together (at the same company) and
we had coded our applications to be able to use either system, as specified by
the user's preference.

I will point a few differences between my module and ConfigReader::Simple: my
module has no non-core dependencies, compared to a rather large list of
dependencies for ConfigReader::Simple. Furthermore, my module appears to
support more data types, programmer-defined key/value delimiters, and also
writes configuration hashes to files, preserving existing comments or adding
new ones. All while trying to keep the actual conf files as human-readable as
possible.

In short, as a companion to Parse::PerlConfig and a parser/generator, it makes
more sense IMHO to leave it where it is. Not to mention that I've already got
a substantial number of users using this module who would have to update a lot
of scripts if there was a name-space change.

Doesn't it parse things into SAX2 events regardless of the XML?

FileSys:::Virtual is a more describing name of what it is.

Thanks for you suggestions. I just need to clarify one detail:
Are the words NameOfAuthType and NameOfUIType intended as literal
suggestions for module names, or as tokens to be replaced later by
the real module names ?

If the former, fine, I will go ahead and register these namespaces :-)
If the latter, I must ask you again to suggest appropriate names for

you should replace the last parts of those names with something
that describes your module. what sets your module apart from
other things that do CGI authorization or terminal interfaces?

these are your modules, and i do not think you are really trying to
come up with adequate names. perhaps you should discuss your modules
in the Perl newsgroups, mailing lists, or other appropriate lists.
it is your job to come up with a good name.

as far as i am concerned, i'm closing the matter and not registering
your modules. after you discuss he names with a wider audience,
submit new namespace requests.
