Google Chrome on Mac

2020-03-17 Thread Dezman Jackson
Good morning,

Hope all are doing well.
Was just curious if anyone out here uses Chrome on the Mac with VoiceOver on a
regular bbasis?Personally, I don't find it to be all that er-friendly and tend
to use Safari. I am also interested in hearing from anyone who is involved in
web development and if you use the dev tools in Chrome.

Regards,
Dezman

RE: A VoiceOver friendly SFTP program

2020-03-17 Thread Tom Moore
I was not aware that there were problems with Voice Over reading the terminal
in the most recent release.
I use Vmware on the mac that runs a Linux machine and then I run all my server
management tasks through this machine so that I can run anything I want in the
environment that I have the most knowledge on.
In addition all the servers I have are Linux based with different distributions
so I use my local machine for development with any script or programs I run so
I am not doing any testing on production hardware.

Re: Braille Display and Bluetooth

2020-03-17 Thread 'Kawal Gucukoglu' via MacVisionaries
Hi There.

Press VO 8 and find the braille table. There there is an option to connect the
braille display via bluetooth as well as USB. So when you go to the braille
option, choose option three which is the display tab and there you can connect
your braille display via bluetooth rather than USB.

Re: silencing or muting Mac VoiceOver when a specific app is running

2020-03-17 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Use an Activity to accomplish this. Go into VO Utility, press cmd-0 to bring
focus to the Activities panel, press Add Activity and give it a name like
Silence. You'll need to expand the Additional Settings to Include item, check
the box for Voice, then press Set Voice Options. You can check the box to mute
VO in there. Press the close button and navigate to the Apps pop-up menu and
select the app you wish this activity applied to.

That should do it.

Later...

RE: Wi-Fi Extenders

2020-03-17 Thread pdevasto0219
I'm a little late to the thread, sorry. However, I wanted to share that I got a
Netgear Wi-Fi extender just about two years ago now, and it's performed
flawlessly in my single-level 2,150 square foot home, even outside in my back
yard. It sells for around $20 US currently. It's very easy to set up: You first
plug it in to an outlet close to your router so you can pair it, then you can
move it to somewhere else where you currently have connectivity issues. It uses
your router's network name and adds ext to it, but you can call it anything you
like. Here's the info:

NETGEAR WiFi Range Extender EX2700 - Coverage up to 600 sq.ft. and 10 devices
with N300 Wireless Signal Booster & Repeater
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L0YLRUW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I assume this is available outside the US, if anyone would want it. Hope this
helps.

Re: backblaze and voiceover

2020-03-17 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the explanation and your directions on how you dragged the
fish icon into the table.

I’ll remember to try that going forward. In a past operating system on
my Mac I could not get the steps to work, but I was lazy this time and didn’t
even try. I need to remember that things do change and usually improve with
time.

Generally CCC, Carbon Copy cloner has worked well for me and I find it easy to
navigate. It has also saved me big time at least once when I needed to
restore my laptop disk from the clone.

Nice to know that at lease two good options are out there. But, Hopefully
Super Duper doesn’t also require the security table challenge.

Best,

Eric Caron

My router is from Xfinity, has nothing to do with NetGear at all. I wouldn’t
think it matters.

Aira free to College students for the rest of the spring semester

2020-03-17 Thread Eric Caron

Hi listers,

I’m sure Aira has been discussed in the past. I wanted to post the below as it
would be very helpful to current blind college students.

I just wish they would also offer it to blind teachers as they are also
learning fast how to run on line teaching.

Also, if you are planning to join Aira for more than the free 5 minute calls be
sure to go through a current user so that you both get additional minutes.

Here is the part of the post for college students.

Aira is the popular app that connects a trained sighted person to assist a
blind person with tasks.

I am posting part of a email message below that offers free service to
blind college students for the rest of the semester.

If you know a student please share as this could be a big help when learning
new on line distance learning software. Now if only they offered it to blind
teachers as well!

One other note. If you are thinking about joining Aira go through a current
blind user and both of you will get free minutes to use.

They also now easily screen share on the Mac and iPhone.

Eric Caron

Free Offer - College Students in Need of Aira

We know that many universities and colleges are rapidly shifting to distance
learning. We’ve heard that some materials and software being used are
inaccessible so we will be offering free Aira for any college student for the
remainder of the spring semester ending in May 2020. If you know of a student
who could benefit from Aira for their distance learning, please email
supp...@aira.io for more information

Aira is available in New Zealand. Just download the Aira iOS app, setup an
account and you are good to go.
You may use my email address as a referral and get yourself 30 free minutes.

Corona Virus Alerts: How to get news updates on your phone right now, cNet

2020-03-17 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I am posting the following article only because Apple products are
discussed.

Be Well,

Mark

Corona virus alerts: How to get news updates on your phone right now

Don't miss another important update about how COVID-19 is affecting your
country and where you live.
March 17, 2020

Sites like Twitter can help keep you updated on the latest corona virus
news.
It's all over the news, social media and nearly everywhere you look -- the
novel corona virus , now a pandemic, has been changing the way employees
work and emptying store shelves. And if you don't have time to follow the
news, you're in luck because you can have news alerts sent to your phone.
You can use sources such as Twitter, Google Alerts and your favorite news
sites to receive updates and notifications about where the corona virus is
and what you can do to help keep yourself and your community safe. You can
also sign up for text alerts to receive information about how many cases are
in your area and what's closing down, like schools and churches.
Read on to learn how to set up for alerts about corona virus developments.

Twitter can send you notifications from corona virus sources
Twitter is a good source for learning what's going on with the corona virus
-- and it has an option to let you turn on crisis and emergency alerts. To
enable this, go to your notifications settings and select Notifications >
SMS Notifications > Crisis and emergency alerts.
You can also get notifications about corona virus from Twitter accounts,
but you'll want to make sure you trust the news source -- for example, The
Associated Press, Reuters, BNO Newsroom, CNN and other domestic news
organizations. To do so, follow the account, then tap the bell icon (located
beside the Following button) and select All Tweets. Now you'll be notified
when the account tweets something new.

Google Alerts
When something new about the corona virus shows up in Google Search, you
can be among the first to know about it. To get started, go to Google Alerts
and enter the topic you want to follow into the search box at the top.
Change the settings to your preferences, like how often you want to see
notifications, and then click Create Alert. You can always go back and
adjust your settings later.

Apple Alerts
If you've got an iPhone or Apple Watch, you can receive emergency, public
safety and government alerts on your device. Some information you may
receive could be alerts issued by your country or region's government, or
alerts involving imminent threats to safety or life.
To turn on the notifications, go to Settings > Notifications, then scroll
all the way to the bottom and toggle on Emergency Alerts and Public Safety
Alerts.

News apps
Most, if not all, news apps will have a newsletter you can sign up for
(in-app and online) that sends the most pressing information to your inbox.
For example, the CNET Now newsletter sends one email daily that includes the
most important news of the day -- much of which is corona virus -related
right now. The CNET app (iPhone, Android) and CNET on Apple News also send
regular news alerts, including stories about the corona virus .
Most news apps will also send you notifications (with your permission) about
breaking news alerts. After you download the apps, they will ask for your
permission to send notifications and you can choose to receive alerts about
breaking news only. You can update at any time in the app's settings.

Get alerts for the city you live in
Depending on where you live, you may be able to sign up for text alerts from
the city. For example, San Francisco lets its residents sign up for alerts
by texting COVID19SF to 888-777. If your city doesn't have a program like
this set up yet, you may be able to sign up for statewide alerts. You can
usually find these by going to [state].gov -- for example, Kentucky.gov.

Re: Aira free to College students for the rest of the spring semester

2020-03-17 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Petrus, and others,

I was skeptical when it first came out. I used Bemyeyes and
bespectacle, I think it was called that. And, those apps were free. But, I got
a free offer to try 30 minutes and I was hooked. I kept it like a emergency
helper. But, now with the free 5 minute calls I rarely use the 30 minutes a
month. And, When I’m stuck needing a pair of eyes it is great to have a
trained person with skills and tools available to help.

I’d recommend to try it out and keep the app on the phone. If you are lucky
enough to be in a country where it works it could help out in a pinch.

Example, I was building a garden shed and my talking tape measure fell
out of my pocket. I needed it to keep working. I used Aira and in a moment I
had it back. It had bounced under the leaves but the agent still spotted it.
Another time I got disoriented in my yard. I called and they got me turned
back around so I could find my way back.

They now help more with crossing streets. In the beginning they didn’t
do that.

And in the US more and more locations have free service, air ports, busses, sub
ways, college campuses, drug stores, department stores and so on.

I once used free access at a drug store to get a tour. I had no idea
they had such a variety of things there!

They can now even share your Mac computer screen and fill in captures. I had
difficulty getting text to enter in a form field last week and they just put
the focus in the spot and then it worked.

So, even if you just use the free 5 minute calls now and then it is nice to
have in your tool box.

In other countries bemyeyes can do some of the functionality. But, Aira has
agents waiting. They are trained and have a dashboard ready to use to assist.
It has things like maps of the airports you might be at. The ability to take a
picture and magnify it to help you know what is around you. They can even
google things or help on a shopping quest. Some of the agents are not only
well trained but have background in Orientation and mobility and other useful
areas.

Again subject states it all, are there any accessible broadcasting apps
similar to station playlist for windows for Mac? I know radiologic is
available, but the developer himself said that it’s not as accessible with
voiceover as it could be, through no fault of his own because he uses
custom list boxes which aren’t accessible because of the app framework
that he is using to develop the app.
