google notification re apple event

2020-03-12 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Lists,

I've cross posted to get this to everyone,

I've been doing some hunting online using chrome as my browser,

While I was searching a auto popup from chrome spoke to me saying that the
March Apple event has been cancelled.
Has anyone else heard this as yet?

Re: google notification re apple event

2020-03-12 Thread Brad Snyder
Apple cancels rumored March event with ‘iPhone SE 2’ delayed indefinitely

Wednesday, March 11, 2020 5:06 pm News
Due to the COVID-19 coronavirus, Apple has canceled a special media event
originally set for March after experiencing continued production delays to the
“iPhone SE 2,” Cult of Macreports, citing “a source at Apple.”

Apple’s new budget-friendly iPhone is said to closely match iPhone 8’s physical
specs
Brad Gibson for Cult of Mac:

A number of other problems played into the decision to delay the event that was
being planned, including the worsening impact of the COVID-19 strain of the
coronavirus in California and elsewhere.

The source said Apple grew “concerned” about bringing together some 1,000
people for the event, originally planned for late March at the Steve Jobs
Theater at Apple Park in Cupertino, California.

MacDailyNews Take: Just last week, the Public Health Department of the County
of Santa Clara (in which Cupertino’s Apple Park and the Steve Jobs Theater
reside) announced new guidance designed to reduce the spread of the virus in
the community, so Apple’s cancelation of their iPhone SE 2 event makes perfect
sense. No sense launching a product if you have no stock on hand*.
Unfortunately, those waiting for Apple’s new “budget” iPhone will have to wait
a little longer.

*although that didn’t stop Apple from doing just that with the original Apple
Watch. 😉

Re: [PBU] google notification re apple event

2020-03-12 Thread Jessica Dail
Hi,
yes, I heard that it was cancelled, then later postponed, but a new date has
not been set yet.
I'll keep everyone posted, once a new date is announced.
WWDC is also in limbo.
That's my favorite event of the year, so seeing it get cancelled, would be very
sad.

Thanks,
Jessica

Braille input device.

2020-03-12 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Interesting idea, but now that Braille can be entered directly on screen on IOS
devices will there be much of a market for this device? How many folks who grew
up with a learning braille would find this more useful than typing directly on
screen or with a standard keyboard. Although I have tried to get efficient on a
Perkins entry system, I still find my standard keyboard to be faster to input
with.

Re: Incoming email sounds on the Mac

2020-03-12 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

A year or so ago, I did some research on this. Supposedly it works. So, I
migrated my tones I use on my iPad and iPhone over to the Mac and placed them
into the specific location where the Mac grabs these sound files from when
making Mail or Message alerts. You'll note that I'm being fairly vague in my
description and this is purposeful. The specific location is deeper in the
System and is not usually accessed by the day-to-day user. I can't remember
for sure, but I may have even needed to disable System Integrity Protection to
do it. After all this, it still didn't work. The tone choices did appear in
Messages for me, but when I chose them, they did not play. I either got no
sound at all, or it switched back to the default alert sound. Again, I'm not
positive. I gave up for now.

So, essentially, it's supposed to be possible, not for the faint of heart, and
not necessarily a successful venture. Maybe I'll take a look at it again in
Catalina in a bit, but wouldn't hold much stock in success.

Later...

Re: Braille input device.

2020-03-12 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Jonathan,

It's funny, that caught my eye, too. Then I wondered, Why would you want that
rather than your VU, which has a braille keyboard and a braille display?

Re which is faster, I think it depends on which kind of keyboard you use the
most. When I was a kid, I was a really fast braille typist. But now I spend 99%
of my time on a qwerty keyboard, so I find I'm faster on that than on a Perkins
style keyboard.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Group wisdom on upgrading to Catalina?

2020-03-12 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
I think you should upgrade as you get the latest security then.
It works quite well for most of the time.
There are some issues for me with braille and i guess this wont be fixed for
quite some time since braille isn’t quite important for apple.
But things work as they should.
Be aware thought that Itunes is gone and you have to learn the new music app.

Re: backblaze and voiceover

2020-03-12 Thread Robert Carter
Hi Jean,

I have been using Back Blaze for the last several years.

I have found it to be accessible enough for my needs. I should say that it is
the third part of my backup approach. I also use Apple’s time machine and each
week I make a clone of my computer using SuperDuper. BackBlaze is the off sight
backup portion just in case something happens to both my SuperDuper and time
machine backups.

I have never tried to restore from Back Blaze other than to login and grab a
file or two that I needed. I was able to navigate around in my backup with
VoiceOver well enough to locate the files that I wanted. Also, for a reasonable
price, Back Blaze will send you a copy of your backup on a hard drive. I have
found them to be very reliable and reasonably priced. Again, I choose not to
use them as my only backup but as a part of the whole backup strategy. If you
want to start cloning your Mac, I recommend SuperDuper. It is totally
accessible and the developer is very committed to VoiceOver.

Take care,

Robert Carter

Re: Braille input device.

2020-03-12 Thread Dezman Jackson
I think it's good there are options for choice of input device. For me, I like
typing on the perkins-style keyboards that come on braille displays for
instance when I'm using such a device with my phone.
Outside of physically reading braille, I tend to lean toward the QWERTY
keyboard unless I'm using braille screen input being that this method is simply
faster to type on the touch screen.

Re: Incoming email sounds on the Mac

2020-03-12 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Hi Tim,
That answers my question. I still can’t understand why apple makes it so
difficult. Like I said most of the default sounds for the messages app are
available on both the Mac and the iPhone, but the alert sounds for the Mail app
are very limited. I haven’t counted them but I’m guessing it is only around 9
options, none of which are very exciting. Surely it can’t be that difficult to
let us download sounds that we have purchased from their own iTunes Store to
our Mac’s?
I might email then and ask but I’m guessing that won’t help as they don’t like
getting suggestions. And I’m not sure what email address to use.

Re: Incoming email sounds on the Mac

2020-03-12 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi Petrus,

Actually, I lied. What a scum-bag, eh? I may have read too much into your
question. The problems I was referring to have to do with ring-tones in the
Messages app and Phone app on your iPhone/iPad. As you know, you can customize
these in iPhone/iPad, and my woes had to do with attempts to customize the same
sounds in Messages and FaceTime on the Mac.

So, now what you've really asked is actually fairly quick and painless as long
as your custom alert sound is an AIFF file. What you do is paste the AIFF
audio file into the Sounds folder in ~/Library. That is, go to your Desktop,
then to the menubar, over to the Go menu, make sure to keep the VO keys pressed
and go down to the Library item and activate with return or VO-space. Now,
your personal Library folder is open and you can locate the Sounds folder, open
it and paste in the AIFF sound file. Once it is in this location, go back into
the Mail app, to Preferences, and in the General pane you'll have that new
sound as an option.

If you don't have an app to convert your sound file into an AIFF, send it to me
off-list and I'll convert it for you.

HTH.

Later...

Re: Incoming email sounds on the Mac

2020-03-12 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Nope, I’m still confused. I have these sounds that I purchased through the
iTunes Store on my iPhone, how do I get them from my iPhone to the Mac in order
to paste them in the first place. I’m assuming the Mac uses the same file type
for the alert tones than the iPhone uses?

Re: Incoming email sounds on the Mac

2020-03-12 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi Petrus,

Nope. The ring-tones are m4r format whereas the alert-tones on the Mac are
AIFF. If these are tones that you've purchased, then it will be a little more
challenging to make into an AiFF audio file, but not normally impossible.

2020-03-12 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Never mind, it all sounds too hard.
I’ll just have to stick with the sounds that come on the Mac. Hopefully one
Apple will let us download extra sounds from the iTunes Store to the Mac.

Re: Incoming email sounds on the Mac

2020-03-12 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

Sorry for making your life difficult. The thing is that different apps use
different formats by default. Messages and FaceTime on your Mac usually use
m4r alert-tones or ring-tones whereas Mail uses and alert sound. hence the
different formats.

Hi,
You can use m4a as well as .aiff files.
I recorded a short demo showing how easy it is if you have the files already on
your Mac. I don’t purchase tones from Apple, so I can’t tell you how to get
them off the phone and onto the Mac.
Download the demo below:

Hi,

Thanks Robert. That is helpful that they can also be m4a audio files.
Purchased m4r files still would be a challenge to convert to m4a, but a
unprotected m4r can be converted to an m4a simply by changing the extension
from m4r to m4a. It is one of the few places where simply changing the
extension works without corrupting the file.

I recorded a short demo showing how easy it is if you have the files already on

Hi Petrus,

I was supposed to leave this Sunday morning, but the COVID-19 has put a wrench
in the plan. I'll have to wait and see when things cool off a bit to arrange a
new time slot. Happy gardening! We're all covered with this rather cold white

Thanks for asking.

Have a good one..

apple music, sharing playlists publicly

2020-03-12 Thread Patrick Ford
Hi,
As far as I can tell, sharing playlists is done this way: go into apple music
under the For You section, then my account, then a search field to add a
friend’s username.
But this does not seem to work for me.
And now, I am only getting the opportunity to sign into face book. This I do
not want to do.
Does anyone know how to share playlists publicly?
Thanks.

I know how frustrating it is, I was meant to be getting a dog but the dog did

a dog for almost 3 years. Hopefully something will come along for me soon.

Just hoping that everybody is well on this list, and no virus.

Hi,

If you have the playlist already created, then do the following. We'll call
your playlist "Patrick's Favourites" for fun.

1. In the Music app, select Patrick's Favourites from the sidebar.
2. Interact with the area named "Patrick's Favourites Header Group".
3. Check the box that reads "Publish on profile and in search".
4. Navigate to the More button and VO-space on it.
5. Select Share from this menu then navigate right and down to either Mail or
Message.

The appropriate app will open and you should be able to send the playlist to
your friend. Note, your friend must be an Apple Music subscriber in order to
receive/use the shared playlist.

That’s one thing I never have to worry about here, Auckland is sub-tropical so
we don’t even get snow in the middle of winter. We hardly even get frost. Simon
is more likely to get the white stuff in the winter being in the South Island.
And that is Snow Simon, before you make some smart comment.
Yes, I second Kawal, hope everyone is keeping safe out there.

 Hi Petrus,

Actually, I lied. What a scum-bag, eh? I may have read too much into
your question. The problems I was referring to have to do with ring-tones
in the Messages app and Phone app on your iPhone/iPad. As you know, you
can customize these in iPhone/iPad, and my woes had to do with attempts to
customize the same sounds in Messages and FaceTime on the Mac.

So, now what you've really asked is actually fairly quick and painless as
long as your custom alert sound is an AIFF file. What you do is paste the
AIFF audio file into the Sounds folder in ~/Library. That is, go to your
Desktop, then to the menubar, over to the Go menu, make sure to keep the
VO keys pressed and go down to the Library item and activate with return
or VO-space. Now, your personal Library folder is open and you can locate
the Sounds folder, open it and paste in the AIFF sound file. Once it is
in this location, go back into the Mail app, to Preferences, and in the
General pane you'll have that new sound as an option.

If you don't have an app to convert your sound file into an AIFF, send it
to me off-list and I'll convert it for you.

 HTH.

 Hi Tim,
That answers my question. I still can’t understand why apple makes it so

Mail app are very limited. I haven’t counted them but I’m guessing it is

Hi,

Sort of. You can also just select "Copy Link" then post it via Twitter,
FaceBook, InstaGram etc, if you don't wish to use Mail or Messages.

Fwd: (Auto-reply) Apple Support

2020-03-12 Thread Petrus Tuerlings
Hi all,
I wanted to email apple to asked if there was a way I could put my purchased
alert tones on on to my Mac, or purchase new ones for my Mac. I didn’t want
to email the accessibility email address as it really isn’t an accessibility
issue. Is there an address I can use? I tried to guess as I couldn’t find one
on their web-site. This is the auto reply I got.

Hi Petrus,
as far as I know there's no such e-mail-address for support. You can use the
feedback page on the internet or the technical support via telephone. And you
could visit an Apple Store of course.

Yes, my wife told me that as well but figured I had nothing to lose by trying.
Oh, as far as your last suggestion goes unfortunately we do not have Apple

Apple cancels rumored March event with ‘iPhone SE 2’ delayed indefinitely
Wednesday, March 11, 2020 5:06 pm
· News

Due to the COVID-19 coronavirus, Apple
has canceled a special media event originally set for March after experiencing
continued production delays to the “iPhone SE 2,” Cult of Macreports, citing “a
source at Apple.”
[Apple iPhone SE 2 event. Apple's new budget-friendly iPhone is said to closely
match iPhone 8's physical specs]Apple’s new budget-friendly iPhone is said to
closely match iPhone 8’s physical specs

Brad Gibson for Cult of
Mac:

Watch. 😉

RE: Incoming email sounds on the Mac

2020-03-12 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Tim and anyone else that’s interested in trying,

What about putting the tones in to a folder in iCloud and then trying to add
them that way to your phone or iPad etc.

I’ve not tried it myself but it works with documents in some cases why not
other file types.

Subject: Re: Incoming email sounds on the Mac

Later...

Hey there. I know I'm late to the party, but as to the subscribing to Office

My subscription ends in November and I plan to renew it, but for now I don't

I got my Office365 directly from Microsoft several years ago. When I got it,
there were 2 options, monthly or yearly. I went with yearly.
Now Office365 is available through the Mac AppStore, and I guess the only
option available is monthly, though I’ve never given it a good look because
I’ve already got it.

iOS 14 Leak: Apple Testing New iMessage Features Such as Slack-Like Mentions
and Unsending
Messages
This week's Apple news was dominated by iOS 14 leaks, including new iMessage
features exclusively shared by
MacRumors.

For starters, Apple is testing a new Slack-like mention system that would allow
users to tag other contacts with their name like @Joe or @Jane. This would be
particularly useful in busy group chat conversations, as it would be possible
to enable the "Hide Alerts" setting and only receive push notifications when
you are mentioned by someone directly.

Other features in development include the ability to retract messages after
sending them, typing indicators in group chats, and the option to mark the last
message of a conversation as unread after opening it.

Nope, I’m still confused. I have these sounds that I purchased through the
iTunes Store on my iPhone, how do I get them from my iPhone to the Mac in order
to paste them in the first place. I’m assuming the Mac uses the same file type
for the alert tones than the iPhone uses?

HTH.

Hi Tim,
That answers my question.

Nope, I’m still confused. I have these sounds that I purchased through the
iTunes Store on my iPhone, how do I get them from my iPhone to the Mac in order
to paste them in the first place. I’m assuming the Mac uses the same file type
for the alert tones than the iPhone uses?

these in iPhone/iPad, and my woes had to do with attempts to customize the same
sounds in Messages and FaceTime on the Mac.

That answers my question. I still can’t understand why apple makes it so

available on both the Mac and the iPhone, but the alert sounds for the Mail app
are very limited.

Never mind, it all sounds too hard.
I’ll just have to stick with the sounds that come on the Mac. Hopefully one
Apple will let us download extra sounds from the iTunes Store to the Mac.

Hello Tim.

I know how frustrating it is, I was meant to be getting a dog but the dog did
not work out for me and so I’m waiting for another dog. I have been waiting for
a dog for almost 3 years. Hopefully something will come along for me soon.

Just hoping that everybody is well on this list, and no virus.

Kawal.

Hi Petrus,

I was supposed to leave this Sunday morning, but the COVID-19 has put a wrench
in the plan. I'll have to wait and see when things cool off a bit to arrange a
new time slot. Happy gardening! We're all covered with this rather cold white
stuff right now, so gardening is still a couple months away in my world.
Thanks for asking.

Have a good one..

Hi,

Sorry for making your life difficult. The thing is that different apps use
different formats by default. Messages and FaceTime on your Mac usually use
m4r alert-tones or ring-tones whereas Mail uses and alert sound. hence the
different formats.
