Re: Voices in Sierra

2016-10-11 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
The strange thing about that is that if you go into the finder, Mackintosh HD,
library, system, speech, and voices, you can see all the Siri voices there. I'd
love it if there was something out there to make them work with Voiceover.

Interesting thought

Thanks Jonathan, I might give that a try, I'll just have to put office 2016
apps in to to a folder as they don't do that by default.

How about putting the microsoft folders on the doc instead of each application?
Only other solution i can think is to rename the applications.

Best wishes,

Re: Spamfilters.

2016-10-11 Thread Scott Granados
Oh come on Anders, there’s nothing like a little sex spam to spice up your
afternoon, hahaha. (I’m kidding)

One way to attack the problem is to make sure you have spam filtration on your
mail server. If you administer your own you can add that feature like Spam
Assassin for example. If not you can see if your provider has an option to
engage that could help. I usually address the problem on the server side so
not sure what client side things you should do but that’s one thing you might
look in to.

Good luck

question about a scrambled address book like effect in Apple mail

2016-10-11 Thread Scott Granados
Hi, let me describe this problem as best I can.

I have Apple mail running under the OS10.1 beta presently but this problem has
existed to one degree or another since at least IOS 9 including the latest El
Cap.

When entering in an address there’s an auto complete feature so for example if
I start to type mac the mac visionaries list appears and completes. This is
fine. However, I’ve had this on for years between versions as well as several
address books which in general seem to be synchronizing ok. The problem is if
I write an address it might come up with the entirely wrong rewrite. I might
put in mikespizza and bobs-BurgerTown will appear in the field. Seems like
there’s either to much data and it’s making crazy relationships or the database
needs a refresh. This problem seems unique to Apple mail. Is there a way to
clear that autocompletion database? If it’s not that simple how do I find the
source of the conflicts?

Thanks in advance

Scott

Re: question about a scrambled address book like effect in Apple mail

2016-10-11 Thread Donna Goodin
Just to add to this, I've also seen this. It only happened once, but somehow
the phone number for our vet was added as a second phone number to an entry I
have for a local pizza place. I noticed it on my iPhone, did not check whether
that carried over to the Mac as well. I went into Contacts on my Phone and
corrected the entry, and have not seen the problem since.

Do they show up in the list of voices available for non VoiceOver speech? I

Go to windows and open up previous recipients. I then usually sort by last used
and check a few to ensure they have been added to contacts. After that I clear
the entire table.

This is something probably worth doing a few times a year.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Hi John, this is exactly what I’m doing now. I’ve never done this so you can

I’ve got hundreds of craigslist entries from california selling old vintage
hardware hahaha. I think the sort and clear method is in order.

Thanks again

Re: Equivalent of the three finger scrol

2016-10-11 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I use mission control but it appears to be associated with a 4 finger swipe up.

There are three areas of Mission Control. The first one adds a virtual desktop,
the second area has a list of all desktops either they are full screen
applications or just a second screen of applications. For a blind user the
primary reason you might want multiple screens is for performance. If you have
an applications that is constantly updating the screen (perhaps a movie), then
placing that application on its own desktop and moving away from it, the
computer will know you can't see the updates so it won't work on constantly
updating the screen with the changes.

The third section of voiceover is a list of every open window So a little bit
like the VoiceOver window list but for all applications.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: an Uber question

2016-10-11 Thread Larry Thacker Jr.
I’ve never tried something that elaborate but the drivers will work with you.
As long as they are willing you can adapt the trip as needed. Of course as
already noted this is going to make it hard to predict your final fair. I
thought I read something a while back about Lyft providing this option but if
it ever happened it isn’t obvious to me upon cursory examination of the app.
I never considered that it would be cheaper to have them wait if it isn’t
long but that makes sense given that there’s an initial minimum charge. I
usually just order a new one for the next leg of the journey but they are
plentiful where I live so I am usually not waiting very long.

Re: VoiceOver Verbosity Problems

2016-10-11 Thread -dan d.

You might try vo+v which brings up a speech control menu. Verbosity is
among the items. The changes persist in my experience.

Hello Brian,

We came across a similar problem of settings not sticking in Sierra this

If you?re not familiar with this procedure, here?s what to do.
Shut down your Mac, then hold down the following keys: Command, Option, letter
?p? and letter ?r?. With these four keys held down, press once on the Power
button. Keep the four keys held down until you?ve heard the start up chime four
times. Your Mac will then boot normally.

Re: an Uber question

2016-10-11 Thread Mika Pyyhkala
Hi,

Lets say you have started a trip and if you swipe and it says something like:
Destination: CVS

You can double tap on that destination field and you will get an edit
box and you may also see previously used destinations.

Once you get lets say Publics Supermarket selected just double tap it.

Then there will be one more OK button to tap on that will update your
trips destination.

The waiting time price for Uber is very low its approximately $.20 a
minute, it will vary slightly depending on your city.

Most drivers will be willing to wait say about 5 minutes at an
intermediate stop, but if it gets to be a long time, you may be more
likely to find a driver who will ask you to request another Uber when
you are ready to go. The reason they may not want to wait is the low
per minute time based charge instead of the higher per mile charge
when they are moving.

This will vary market to market and driver to driver.

I mean in New York City at 10:00pm on a Saturday night they may not
want to wait for you for 30 minutes at a CVS, but in a smaller town
with less busy traffic, they may be more willing to wait.

Also if you want to here more about this from a driver perspective,
there is a video linked below on Youtube from The Ride Share Guy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y88sQNeJ168

But again if your just stopping somewhere for about 5 minutes or less
you should be fine.

For example when I work from home I will use the Starbucks app to
place a mobile order, go to the Starbucks and pick it up, and then
have the same Uber wait for me.

Also sometimes if I am taking a long trip I will have them first stop
at Starbucks, usually I'll do the order on the mobile app, and then
we'll go forth with the long trip.

Best,
Mika

Hi Sarai,

I have done similar trips as the one you suggested earlier, you can actually
change your destination in the Uber App. The process does not immediately come
to mind. Once you are in your trip, the relevant button is quite easy to find
using VO.

Hi,

Use cmd-space. Hold down the cmd-space for a few seconds, until you hear the
ding that is saying that Siri is ready for you to speak. If you release it too
quickly, it will bring up Spotlight instead.

Handling Kindle Books On The Mac

This guide is not designed to assist the braking of copyright law. Users
must take responsibility for their own actions and conscience. It is not
for the faint hearterd either. Difficulty = medium to hard.

 Download the following:
Kindle for Mac (This is for the UK store) So by default, the store is
set to amazon.co.uk . This setting is difficult to
change so download from your country to save you the bother.

 https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201246110

From memory, I tapped the tab key twice, then hit enter which forced the
authorisation wizard to put the focus in the password field. Then I
typed in my password then hit enter. Do these steps very slowly. I have
a fast Mac but this wizard is very sluggish. Use VO B to read the dialog
box. You’ll get very little speech out of it. You will know if you have
been successful because it will present the opening screen which you can
 VO arrow left and right.

Then download Kindle DRM Removal. This looks different site but I’m sure
 this is the right one.

 http://kindle-drm-removal-mac.en.softonic.com/mac/download

This will find the Kindle books that have been pulled down on to the
Mac. It will create it’s own directory to store DRM removed files. I
find the selection of books frustrating . You need to interact with the
toolbar and click on the open files button. Which brings up a typical
finder window and it’s difficult to know which book is which.

 Now download Calibre:
 https://calibre-ebook.com/download_osx
For this you might want to manipulate the path variable. As the command
line tools are hidden in your Applications directory. Mine is:

 /Applications/calibre.app/Contents/MacOS/ebook-convert

Don’t forget auto tab completion. So on the command line something like:

 ebook-convert My_Recipe_Book.azw3 .rtf

 Will generate My_Recipe_Book.rtf

 Here’s the help file:

 Usage: ebook-convert input_file output_file [options]

Convert an ebook from one format to another.

input_file is the input and output_file is the output. Both must be
specified as the first two arguments to the command.

The output ebook format is guessed from the file extension of
output_file. output_file can also be of the special format .EXT where
EXT is the output file extension. In this case, the name of the output
file is derived from the name of the input file. Note that the filenames
must not start with a hyphen. Finally, if output_file has no extension,
then it is treated as a directory and an "open ebook" (OEB) consisting
of HTML files is written to that directory. These files are the files
that would normally have been passed to the output plugin.

After specifying the input and output file you can customize the
conversion by specifying various options. The available options depend
on the input and output file types. To get help on them specify the
input and output file and then use the -h option.

For full documentation of the conversion system see

iMud (an accessible macOS MUD/MUSH client)

2016-10-11 Thread Tyler Thompson
Hey Everybody,

Quite some time ago I made a MUD client for OS X, it was alright but
promptly quit working with the advent of swift and apples usual deprecation of
code.

I’ve recently restarted the iMud project (Beta available at
http://www.asid.us#software ) and have gotten to
a comfortable enough place. It has the usual, triggers, timers, aliases,
delays, MSP (provided it’s server-side, client-side coming soon). It does
support Lua to an extent and it’s all written in swift 3. This client will only
work on the latest macOS (sierra), this is intentional, trying to support
legacy operating systems is what got me in trouble lsat time.

If anybody is interested in beta testing the client give it a download
and send me a message to let me know what you think. If anybody is interested
in helping code iMud I have a plethora of ideas and would welcome the help (you
must know swift). Finally if anybody is interested in learning to code and you
think a partially constructed MUD client might be a cool way to go feel free to
message me.

Better Grammar Checking on macOS

2016-10-11 Thread Joshua Tubbs
Hi everyone,

I’m currently writing both a novel and various short stories within StoryMill
right now. The thing that is really getting on my last nerve is the internal
grammar checker in macOS. I may write the following sentence as dialogue: “Have
you considered an organization?” The sentence sounds like a perfectly
reasonable question to me. The problem is, with this and other sentences, the
macOS grammar check will come up saying that “Have” may not agree with the rest
of the sentence. Huh? MSWord has never gave me that crap.
Another thing: I’m sure my writing is filled with Comma Splices. If that’s
macOS’s way of dealing with splices its pretty odd. Why doesn’t it do what word
does and replace the second comma with a semicolon where applicable?
Surely some of you have ran into these odd behaviors with macOS and grammar. Is
there a better app that handles this more fluently and with consistency? If so,
I’ll extract my StoryMill content and paste it into that app and just do it
that way.
Thanks all.

Handling Kindle Books On The Mac

This guide is not designed to assist the braking of copyright law. Users
must take responsibility for their own actions and conscience. It is not
for the faint hearterd either. Difficulty = medium to hard.

Download the following:
Kindle for Mac (This is for the UK store) So by default, the store is
set to amazon.co.uk . This setting is difficult to
change so download from your country to save you the bother.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201246110

From memory, I tapped the tab key twice, then hit enter which forced the
authorisation wizard to put the focus in the password field. Then I
typed in my password then hit enter. Do these steps very slowly. I have
a fast Mac but this wizard is very sluggish. Use VO B to read the dialog
box. You’ll get very little speech out of it. You will know if you have
been successful because it will present the opening screen which you can
VO arrow left and right.

Then download Kindle DRM Removal. This looks different site but I’m sure
this is the right one.

http://kindle-drm-removal-mac.en.softonic.com/mac/download

This will find the Kindle books that have been pulled down on to the
Mac. It will create it’s own directory to store DRM removed files. I
find the selection of books frustrating . You need to interact with the
toolbar and click on the open files button. Which brings up a typical
finder window and it’s difficult to know which book is which.

Now download Calibre:
https://calibre-ebook.com/download_osx
For this you might want to manipulate the path variable. As the command
line tools are hidden in your Applications directory. Mine is:

/Applications/calibre.app/Contents/MacOS/ebook-convert

Don’t forget auto tab completion. So on the command line something like:

ebook-convert My_Recipe_Book.azw3 .rtf

Will generate My_Recipe_Book.rtf

Here’s the help file:

Usage: ebook-convert input_file output_file [options]

Convert an ebook from one format to another.

input_file is the input and output_file is the output. Both must be
specified as the first two arguments to the command.

The output ebook format is guessed from the file extension of
output_file. output_file can also be of the special format .EXT where
EXT is the output file extension. In this case, the name of the output
file is derived from the name of the input file. Note that the filenames
must not start with a hyphen. Finally, if output_file has no extension,
then it is treated as a directory and an "open ebook" (OEB) consisting
of HTML files is written to that directory. These files are the files
that would normally have been passed to the output plugin.

After specifying the input and output file you can customize the
conversion by specifying various options. The available options depend
on the input and output file types. To get help on them specify the
input and output file and then use the -h option.

For full documentation of the conversion system see
https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/conversion.html

Whenever you pass arguments to ebook-convert that have spaces in them,
enclose the arguments in quotation marks.

Moving to the top of my Email messages list

2016-10-11 Thread Kristeen Hughes
I used to be able to do this by making sure I was interacting with the messages
table and then pressing function+shift+vo+left arrow. Going to the bottom of
the list could be done in the same way, but with the right arrow substituted
for the left. Since upgrading to Sierra, this no longer seems to work. I think
I got it to happen a couple of times, but not any more. Is there a new way?

Re: an Uber question

2016-10-11 Thread Brent Harding
I think waiting or not for them can cut both ways. If they don't wait,
there's no telling if you get someone else for the rest of the trip, and
that first driver loses out on the rest. I think you do save quite a bit
sometimes, as there is only one ride booking fee, and one charge of the
minimum fare for such a trip.

Hi,

Lets say you have started a trip and if you swipe and it says something
like:

Best,
Mika

I never considered that it would be cheaper to have them wait if it isn’t

Hi guys:
I’ve only used Uber to go from point A, to point B. My question is can
you use Uber to run several different errands at once without having to
call for multiple trips? If so, how can you do this in the app, then
find the Uber driver once you exit your stores?
As an example, I call Uber, want to go to the grocery store, will be
there only 5 min to grab milk and bread. Then, I want to go to CVS to
run

inside and pick up an RX. Then I want to call in an order to Beef
O’bradys for takeout. I’d then have to walk inside the restaurant,
pickup

food, get back in uber. Then I want to swing through the Starbucks drive
through to pickup a large tea. Then, return home. This is an example,
but I don’t want to have to call an Uber after each trip. For one thing,
probably a 15 minute wait.. and my food will get cold!

Re: Better Grammar Checking on macOS

2016-10-11 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I'm in no way in the know regarding these sorts of apps, so I hope my comments
are OK. I tried the line "Have you considered an organization?" both in
TextEdit and Pages, and neither came up with them as a grammatical issue. Two
things come to mind for me, first, that question alone on the page, may not
come up with the same error as you're getting within the context of your novel.
Second, might it be Story Mill itself that is causing the issue, not the MacOS
Spell/Grammar sub-system? Try pasting some of your text into Pages, do the
grammar check and see your results. If Pages doesn't seem to come up with the
same errors, then you may wish to speak with Mariner Software, the developers
of Story Mill.

Sorry if this is not the kind of help you were looking for.

spell check issue

2016-10-11 Thread Jean
Hello All:

This has been annoying me for some time. I want to have the spell checker set
to not correct spelling as I type in documents. In the system preferences I
have automatic spell check box unchecked and yet every time I open a new
document the automatic spelling correction thing in the word processor is
checked. What can be done about this? In past versions of OS this has not been
a problem.

Thanks for any help,

Re: Voices in Sierra

2016-10-11 Thread Ray Foret jr
Let me look and see a second.

Found it I think. Here’s the path.

Macintosh/System/Library/Speech/Voices and from that point on, each voice is
assigned its own folder.

So, I’m guessing that the male Siri voice would have this path:

Macintosh/System/Library/Speech/Voices/Aaron folder.

Then, I want to go to CVS to run
inside and pick up an RX. Then I want to call in an order to Beef
O’bradys for takeout. I’d then have to walk inside the restaurant, pickup
food, get back in uber. Then I want to swing through the Starbucks drive
through to pickup a large tea. Then, return home. This is an example,
but I don’t want to have to call an Uber after each trip. For one thing,
probably a 15 minute wait.. and my food will get cold!

Re: an Uber question

2016-10-11 Thread Brandt Steenkamp
Hi Sarai,

I do a short version of this regularly, often when I come back home after going
to the Lawn bowls club, my wife may ask me to get something from the store. I
would call for the cab with the store as my destination. On rout to the shop, I
would ask the driver not to end the trip when we arrive, then just before I get
out, I change the end destination to my home.

There are a few ways to look at the question, "is this expensive?" Objectively,
I would say no. Using an Uber cab to do several things in one trip is obviously
cheeper than doing 3 or 4 different trips from point to point. For those who do
not know, Uber charges a flat minimum rate per trip, and those can pile up.
Using My very specific situation, the flat rate for Uber in South Africa is
R20. Usually a trip from the Bowls Club to my preferred store is about R33. The
trip from home to the same store is the minimum R20.

Thus, if I were to call 1 Uber, and another one to get home, it should cost me
about R53. When using only 1 Uber for both destinations in one trip, it usually
works out to between R45 and R48. Saving anywhere between R5 and R8.

Subjectively Uber is expensive, of course! Though once again objectivity comes
to the rescue. I calculated the difference between actually owning a Car and
using Uber a few months back, once again for South Africa, for this is where I
live.

The difference is unbelievable! In my personal situation, using on average R400
on Uber trips a month, and where owning a small Car and using it fore the same
trips comes to R8000 a month. This puts my uber cost at about 5% of the cost of
a car. So objectively, once again, Uber is, not, expensive.

Brandt Steenkamp

I never considered that it would be cheaper to have them wait if it isn’t

The Twitter for iOS Night Mode Feature is Now Compatible with VoiceOver

2016-10-11 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I am delighted to inform you that the new Twitter for iOS Night Mode feature
is now VoiceOver compatible in the latest update to the app.

Please join me in expressing appreciation to the Twitter developers for
addressing our request so quickly, in fact, within less than a month.

I will paste in my original message on this subject, wherein you will find
the various contact channels that I recommend.

This is truly a marvelous enhancement to an already outstanding social media
tool.

Subject: Please Join Me in Requesting That The New Night Mode Feature,
introduced in the Latest Version of the iOS Twitter App, Be Made VoiceOver
Accessible

Hello Everyone,

Recently, Twitter introduced a new accessibility feature called Night Mode.

As posted by I-Accessibility, Quote, Twitter for iOS has updated their app
with a feature called Night Mode that changes the app's color scheme to
allow for higher contrast text. This feature allows for users to read tweets
easier by showing text on a dark background with light colored text. ...
Turning on this feature will instantly switch your device to Night mode, End
Quote.
http://iaccessibility.net/index.php/2016/09/24/quick-tip-enable-night-mode-i
os-twitter-app/

Unfortunately, as was the case when Moments was introduced, the Night Mode
feature cannot be accessed when VoiceOver is enabled.

Please join me in requesting that Night Mode be made available even when
VoiceOver is enabled.

Post your request in the App Store as a review, send a tweet to both
@support and @Twitter, and send your request to Twitter via email at
supp...@twitter.com.

Thank you,

Mark

Try option-command-up and option-command-down to move to the top or bottom of
the list respectively.
