Re: Anyone else disappointed with the "big" apple event

2016-03-26 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
I’d watch it. The bits you’re interested in are at the start, where Apple talk
about recycling, and the end, where Apple proclaim that it’s “Really sad” that
people are using PCs that are five years old.

Me? Cynical? Never! :)

I think the Mac is dead, anyway. Well, if you disagree, cool beans, but I
think it’s fairly evident that Macs fall under the general umbrella of PCs.
And, don’t you think it’s fairly apparent from the non-appearance of new Macs
and the quality of OS X nowadays?

Re: Opinion: Will limited device & app support lead 3D Touch to wither and die?

2016-03-26 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
I turned the feature off. I like the idea of pressure-sensitivity, as a rule,
but think 3D Touch itself is fiddling and unwarranted. It seems to me that
what touchscreen UIs need is the universal equivalent of the shortcut menu, not
special treatment of extra pressure on any given control which may or may not
have any effect whatsoever.

Re: converting a file into pages

2016-03-26 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Walter,

As far as I know, the only way to convert a PDF into Pages is to select all,
copy to the clipboard then paste into a blank Pages document. However, if your
book isn’t reading correctly in iBooks, then I suspect there’s a problem with
the layout in the PDF and you might have to do some complicated editing to make
it read properly.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: itunes librarys

2016-03-26 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
You can split up an iTunes library across multiple disks, as long as those
disks are consistently accessible under the drive letters or volume names with
which they were identified at the time you added their contents to your iTunes
library. The trick is in iTunes Advanced Preferences; uncheck the "Copy files
to iTunes Media folder when adding to library” checkbox. Now, adding files to
your library from any disk you care to will create a reference to the external
files on those disks, without building the library in your primary iTunes
location.

Be aware that this scheme creates for you the obligation of making certain that
the files continue to be available when you need them, for example when
synchronising. Moreover, and perhaps more significantly, you lose the ability
to organise files automatically, which means that any change to metadata that
you make to files inside iTunes will not be reflected in the file system, but
only in the file tags and iTunes database. This last reason is why I could
never consider doing this. It would be far better to make a virtual file
system that spanned multiple disks, or delegate storage to a larger drive
and/or NAS that will be represented as a single file system.

Strange problem when updating iPod

2016-03-26 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

I'm having an odd problem trying to update my fifth gen iPod. I've tried
several times, and each time I get an error message that the update cannot be
verified because I am not connected to the internet. I am, in fact, connected
to the internet, I can update other apps in the app store, and load pages in
Safari. Anyone know what might be causing this or what I can do?
TIA,
Donna

Re: Opinion: Will limited device & app support lead 3D Touch to wither and die?

2016-03-26 Thread Jenine Stanley
I read this article as well and have the following opinion.

I’m a big user of 3D touch. It took some getting used to and some retraining of
my fingers but for me as a VO user, it save time and allows me to use shortcuts
and get through or to things just that tiny bit faster.

Honestly, the excuse of not knowing whether an app has 3D touch until you press
on it is a bit spoiled to me. 1. Read the app description in the App Store.
They usually say if they have a 3D touch feature, especially as an update. 2.
Explore the app’s settings and help. Yes, that’s one more step but if you don’t
want to look stupid, which unless you’re up in front of a crowd doing a demo,
the 5 seconds or so it takes to find out that an app doesn’t have 3D touch,
will go unnoticed by 99% of the people around you. If you feel that much
pressure about operating your phone, and the use of the word *you* here is
generic, then I’d hate to be *you*.

I suspect that 3D touch was a concept Apple was trying. I have read that the
reason 3D touch is not on the new iPads is that it and the screen for drawing
with the new pencil did not work together. I know I read the technical reasons
but can’t recall them off hand.

I’m wondering how difficult it is to add 3D touch to an app. Do all apps need
it? That might be another factor.

I realize this sounds like being an Apple FanGirl or at least an apologist but
I happen to like the feature and hope it does show up in other devices. As for
the iPhone SE, I’m also curious as to how 3D touch would work on such a small
screen. Yes, it would have been nice to see it on said screen and see how it
would work. No reason it shouldn’t.

I’m also thinking that the iPhone SE came out in anser to the protests about
the larger phones and pricing. Adding 3D touch screens would have taken it out
of that price range.

All guesses on my part though so I’ll return to 3D touching my phone. Yeah,
!

Re: Opinion: Will limited device & app support lead 3D Touch to wither and die?

2016-03-26 Thread Mary Otten
I think the big problem with 3D touch that the author of that article points
out, is that it is not easily discoverable. Apple has violated one of the basic
rules of UX design, discoverability. Reading weather 3-D touch is available
once doesn't cut it. You might forget if an app has it or not. Sure, you can
test and see. But that is such a basic rule of design, that it really is
surprising that Apple, the company which prides itself on making a superior
user experience, did not make someway to make this immediately discoverable.

Re: Anyone else disappointed with the "big" apple event

2016-03-26 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
Not sure I would call it a Mac issue. The rate of growth of Mac sales
have slowed from last year in Q4 (2.8% up) but that's better than the
overall PC market which shrank (8.3% down). Might just be an indication
of overall market trends. That said, PCs (in the generic sense) tend to
be more durable than mobile devices which get replaced far more often
and generally cost more. So maybe the PC market is just getting
saturated. My wife's MacBook is now 8 years old and still works fine. In
that same time period she went through three phones. Maybe not typical
but I wouldn't declare the death of the PC platform based just on unit
sales.

Re: pdf documents

2016-03-26 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
PDFs aren't compressed on their own. You can zip a PDF by selecting it
and then going to the file menu to choose Compress "filename" or use the
contextual menu on the PDF. That will make a .zip file of the PDF which
will upload/download faster.

RE: Problem with imap gmail on Mac OS

2016-03-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Paul,

One configuration setting that is crucial to successfully using gMail accounts
via Apple Mail is that the All Mail folder/Label be displayed in your gMail
account.

Please note that this is not the default setting in gMail.

Generally speaking, you can enable this settings via gMail from your preferred
web browser. While logged into gMail, open the Settings area. There will be a
list of tabs. In one of these tabs, you will see the options to display
various folders/labels. Make certain that the All Mail Label is set to on. For
good measure, you should probably make certain that the Trash label is set to
on, as well.

Finally, sign out of gMail. Reboot your Mac, and you should be good to go.

Good Luck,

Mark

Subject: Problem with imap gmail on Mac OS

Hello,
I am using VoiceOver on my 2008 iMac with El Capitan 10.11.4 and Apple mail to
create a new Email for my gmail account which is set up as imap. Note that the
below problem has happened on every El Capitan release and also on every
Yosemite release.

SO I start the Apple mail application and press command+n to create a new
message. I type the message text, and then edit it to correct errors. I then
send the message. If I then look at the contents of the trash mail box I see
numerous copies of the above Email. It seems that someone is saving the Email
after every edit action. This fills up my trash mail box and presumably also
fills up gmail and consumes network traffic. It also presumably uses needless
processing power to do all this and thereby slows down my machine.

Do others see this problem and if so have you found a way to stop this
behaviour?

Best regards….

Paul Hopewell

People who only use English don’t know or have forgotten that other languages

Re: Problem with imap gmail on Mac OS

2016-03-26 Thread Grant
Hello Paul,

The setting you need is in Mail’s preferences (COMMAND+COMMA to open it).
Navigate to the accounts tab, and select your Gmail account in the accounts
list. Select the “mailbox behaviours” tab, then uncheck “store draft messages
on the server”. This will prevent drafts from being saved to Gmail.

Cheers,

Well, this just gets weirder and weirder. I've got my iPod connected to
iTunes, and pressed Check for update, and iTunes tells me that the current
version 9.2 is up to date. Now I really don't know what to do.

Accessibility of iWork for iCloud?

2016-03-26 Thread Kevin Chao
Hi,
Has anyone tried iWork for iCloud? If so, are there tips/suggestions on
VoiceOver interacting with KeyNote?
I was trying to review some slides, but only accessible way I found was to
print to PDF then read in Preview...The UI to even accomplish this was not
very intuitive.
Hope I am missing something obvious.
Thanks!

Re: Strange problem when updating iPod

2016-03-26 Thread Basioli George
ok,

keeping hyour i pod connectted to itunes;

go to file, devices, and transfer purchessed apps to iTunes
after this is finished on your iPod do a backup to iCloud useing your iPod in
settings, iCloud and down at the bottom look to see that backup is turned on
then exit out of settings to the home screen and keep the iPod plugged into the
computer and lock the iPod
wait about tem minutes to be sure and then unlock the iPod, and go to settings,
iCloud, and see when the last backup was it should have a date and time of
today.

now if all this is complete from iTunes you will do the following

make sure your iTouch is selectted, and then tab to the scroll pain and inter
act and tab down to backup to this device and put a check in the box
now move to increptted backup and put a check in this box
now make a password for the increptted backup.
now move to backup or sync i can not remember which it is at the moment and vo
spacebar to start the backup.

when it is finished backing up all your info we can move on from there.

you want to incrept because this way you will save all your settings and
fpasswords and etc in the backup.

when this is finished you can do a restore of the device and when it is
restored with the latest i o s then you can if needed restore from the backup
you just fmade to the computer

plan is to wait a few days, see if anything changes, and if not contact Apple.
Thanks,
Donna

Some Vmware questions, reading hard disks etc

2016-03-26 Thread Ramy Moustafa
Hello all:

i have some vmware questions and please accept my appologies.
1- when incerting a new flash or external hard disk, el Capitan asks
me to open it on windows or mac.
but if i restart my windows or shut it down, and open it again, i can
not find my hard disk, how can i open my hard disk again without
ejecting it and then put it again?

2- i followed your suggestins in using the sharp keys, i remap my
incert key and now it's teh right alt key,
but i need it to be the cap lock key like my original windows machine,
is it possible to make the jaws or NVDA modifire key the cap lock key
instead of right alt?

3- when using the jaws kersor, i can not navigate with my errows,
don't know why, but this is what happened here.
any ideas?
4- when i need to use control errows to move bitween words on windows,
i found myself moving bitween the VMWare and my mac OS, can i disable
this?

I have a 6S plus and have no problems with the audio. How is the audio without
EarBuds? Maybe the problem is with earbuds that you're using.

Re: Some Vmware questions, reading hard disks etc

2016-03-26 Thread Phil Halton
Of course it's possible to map the Jaws or NVDA modifier key to the caps lock
key using Sharkeys. You just simply do what you did to map it to the right all
except select caps lock instead of right alt. Careful using Sharkeys Remy, if
you're not sure what you're doing you can really mess up your keyboard
mappings. Don't forget you can always erase your mappings and reset it to
normal by deleting the list of remaps in Sharkeys and then going head and
updating like that. That will restore your key maps to the original windows
mappings.
Another viable option for creating a Jaws or NVDA modifier key is by using the
key remap feature in VM itself. I'm not going to going to explaining how it's
done, but you can map the accent key for example to the insert key and then use
the accent key in Jaws or in NVDA.

RE: Opinion: Will limited device & app support lead 3D Touch to wither and die?

2016-03-26 Thread Simon Fogarty
I must admit that I don't use 3d touch anywhere near as much as I should.
I think my biggest issue is that my force of touch is a bit over the top.

Yes it was pulled due to an issue that locked the update during the process.

They are meant to be re releasing it again once the issues were corrected.

If it’s on a full volume any iPhone speaker will definitely distort the volume.
I had an issue with my 6S Plus when i purchased about 3 weeks ago where Alex
would often chop off and clip out but updating to 9.3 resolved the issue.

2016-03-26 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Weird, ever since I got my 6S back last October, I've never noticed too much
distortion. Maybe a little bit, but it's very suttle if any, and I normally
do! run mine if not all the way up, at least maybe 1 notch away from all the
way. Granted, I'm using the Siri Male voice, but even when I used Alex a few
times, I don't recall having this issue. I think the only voice I've found
that does! distort like crazy is Symantha.

If it’s on a full volume any iPhone speaker will definitely distort the
volume. I had an issue with my 6S Plus when i purchased about 3 weeks ago where
Alex would often chop off and clip out but updating to 9.3 resolved the issue.

On my iPhone 6S Plus I have noticed that the audio has improved from iPhone 5S.
It probably make sense since the phone is bigger which should give more room
for Apple to throw in a bigger, vibrant speaker. I have no issues with my 6S
Plus speaker what so ever, but if you are concerned about your audio you should
definitely visit Apple Store.

You cannot remap the caps lock key using SharpKeys alone. Here are some

Re: Some Vmware questions, reading hard disks etc

2016-03-26 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
On the USB thing, it's actually VMWare that asks if you want the drive
connected to the Mac or to the VMWare machine. Once you exit VMWare or
reboot I guess the thumb drive get handed back to OSX so if you start
vmware again the thumb drive is now mounted on the OSX side. So you
would need to map a Mac drive to a Windows drive letter.

Facebook app question

2016-03-26 Thread Mary Otten
I'm cross posting in case there are people on the Mac list to use iPads but not
iPhone. I often run across items in my Facebook feed which say that person a
and person be have shared a link. When this happens, if you double tap on the
item, you get nothing. If you to finger double tap, you get a choice two
choices really, one of which is more. If you double tap the more choice, you
get to save the link and that's it. There's no way to go directly to the story
you want to read. What am I missing? Is there a way, when you get one of these
items, which more than one person has shared, where you can directly do some
gesture, which will take you to the story you want to read? It's very
irritating.

Kevin, what does a link to a thread on the eyes freelist have to do with a
question about an iPhone or iPad app?

Re: Anyone else disappointed with the "big" apple event

2016-03-26 Thread Kevin Chao
With the intro of another iPad Pro and re-intro of 4" iPhone SE. This was
in addition to the other hardware SKUs that seem to be added with each
hardware intro event.
This is almost dé·jà vu of when Pepsi CEO had every pro/consumer hardware
SKUs under the planet that utterly confused and overhwelmed the market. Too
bad we won't be able to have Steve Jobs come back in and make the simple
4x4 grid of pro/consumer and desktop/laptop. . The magic, "just works" and
simpleintuitive Apple is long gone...

That would be the same Steve Jobs who brought us mobile me and antenna gate? No
one is perfect. You can't live in the past. And compared with android, it's
still way simpler.
