Re: Uber Questions

2016-02-07 Thread venky . 92
Hi,
Here is a detailed explanation of using uber with voiceover.
In the first screen, you will have options to go to the menu, set your pickup
location, select the type of uber you want to use, etc.
In the pickup location, you will have to enter the address from where you wish
to be picked up. That is, your house address if you are leaving from home. Once
you make sure voice-over speaks the correct address, swipe right. you will hear
voice-over say "set pickup location" followed bye The ETA. Double tap this
button And you will be taken to a confirmation screen.

In this screen, you will have different options to enter destination, choose
payment method (I think it is only the credit card in the US and many
countries), check fare estimate and a request button at the bottom of the
screen. Here are the details of the confirmation screen.
the first element is “centre map” this not important from a voiceOver user’s
perspective.
The next element as you swipe right is the cancel button. this is if you want
to go to the previous screen. The next element says “confirmation” and we will
not have to interact with this. the next option is pickup location. remember,
you have set this before. Next, the Add destination button. double tap this to
search for and enter the address of the place you want to go to.
It is quite easy to enter the destination for popular landmarks and most
addresses.
the next option is payment. you can select this if you have multiple cards
added to your account.
the next option is fare estimate. this will ask you to enter the drop location
so uber can calculate a rough fare for your ride. the next option is promo
code. here, you can enter a promo code (if you have any) to get discounts.
the next option is the request button. VoiceOver reads this as “request”
followed by the category of the car you selected. double tap this option. when
the ride gets confirmed, you will get the driver details. look for the trip
options or the contact driver button and inform him that you are visually
impaired and as suggested, describe yourself. after your trip, you will get the
details such as the fare and an option to rate the driver.

I use Uber in India and I too was very nervous to travel alone initially. But
after a few trips, I feel very confident and most of all, independent.

Here are a few tips that will make your uber experience even better.
1. It is always better to enter the destination. even if you do not know the
exact address, try searching for it in the add destination screen. Uber has a
fairly good source from which it lists addresses. If you are still unable to
find the place you want to go to, try searching in google maps and enter the
name in uber. This will save you the trouble of telling the driver the
directions to your destination. You can add the destination even after the trip
is confirmed and you get the driver details. the driver will be able to see
where you want to go only after you get into the car and he starts his trip.
2. Send status to your contacts. Once your ride is confirmed and you get the
driver details, explore the screen to find the send status option. here, uber
may request your contact details for the first time. search for the person who
you wish to send the status of your trip to and select. once you are done,
select the done button (usually to the top right part on the screen). the
recipients will get an sms with a link. clicking on this link will open a page
which has the driver details. Once your trip starts, people with this link will
be able to track your car in realtime. To me personally, doing this makes me
feel more safe. I usually send status to the person who is supposed to receive
me on the other end, my family and any other friend or colleague who is with me
at my pickup point. In india, uber has an option to add a set of emergency
contacts to whom you can send the trip status to. Not sure how this works else
where.

3. keep tracking your whereabouts during the trip.
Though this is not entirely necessary, I usually turn on turn by turn
directions to my destination using google maps just to make sure I am not lost.

4. Avoide making the driver wait after you reach your destination.

If you have to be assisted by somebody after getting to your destination, it is
better to send them your trip status and make sure they are ready to meet you
when the vehicle reaches. This will avoid wait time charges for you and may
also ensure a good rating.
5. It is better to set your home and work locations to the addresses of your
house and your work place. This way, search for home or work when ever you wish
to enter your pick up or destination locations. You can do this by first
selecting the pick up menu button located to the top left corner of the first
screen and then going to your profile. The profile icon is usually labelled
after your name. Here, you will find options to enter home and work addresses.

Hope this

Re: iBooks still unusable after clean install

2016-02-07 Thread David Griffith
On Windows I use QRead and as far as I can tell preserves structure fine
for the purposes I have used it for.
Control H will bring up a navigable list of headings in any book or
magazine and this is my main method of navigation.

I will put it on my VM Ware Fusion image of Win 7 as a mac alternatibve
to iBooks for now.
I used to use Stanza on the Mac. Unfortunately Stanza does not seem to
support modern epub file on the Mac any more though it stills handles
mobi files OK as long as you install the legacy Java stuff when prompted.
This is a work around for the RNIB Talking Newspaper service as stuff is
available as mobi as well as epub from that library.

From what you’re saying, though, it sounds like your investments of time are
best elsewhere. To be honest, I rarely use iBooks for OS X for reading at all.
You only need it to set up your book library for iTunes to sync to your
iDevices. If I could opt out of that, and have my books back in my media
folder (which is not on my boot device) you can be sure that I would.

What, out of interest, do you use for ePub on Windows? Anything that preserves
structure?

SoS! Logic pro x busy when interacting with mixer group

2016-02-07 Thread Daniela Rubio
Hello all!

Here I come with a very strange question, let’s see if someone can help me to
solve the mystery.

-after the last Logic update, this is version 10.2.1, which came on Jan 20, we
are having this problem, we even reported it.

All is working as normal, but when we start to interact with the mixer zone,
Logic becomes busy,a nd the only solution is to force quit. I have tried all
posible, even deleted preference files from the system, and it is still not
working.

We have asked to some other folks who use logic, but they seem to be OK. The
problem just comes when trying to touch something from the mixer, and it
doesn’t mater if I am using standard or Bookend navigation modes for VoiceOver.
As soon as we come into the mixer group and interact, the crash comes.

Actually, we know that this is going to happen, because usually, there is a
selected item within the mixer group, and you can tell so even before
interacting. When you come to the mixer group VoiceOver says “Mixer group, one
item selected” and if it doesn’t say “one item selected” we know that when
interacting, it will become busy.

Thanks very much in advance for all your help!

Best
Daniela

Re: SoS! Logic pro x busy when interacting with mixer group

2016-02-07 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi,
How is your mixer set? Is it set to show all channel strips or only tracks? I
find that when the mixer is set to showing all channel strips, this happens for
me too. You choose what the mixer should show from the tool bar in the mixer
section. Interact with the tool bar, and there you should find a number of
radio buttons. Select the one that says ”tracks” and all should be well, at
least it’s like that on my system.

Re: iPhone not syncing with iTunes

2016-02-07 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I had fairly the opposite happen. I added several CD albums, most of which are
not available via Apple Music, and they would not sync onto my phone.
Investigating a little it seems the Apple support pages indicate that you can’t
move personal music around as easily when Apple Music is on. I would love to
hear any solutions / details the group has.

I have just tried using iBooks for the first time, so I need to add a couple

I have just tried using iBooks for the first time as well. I know this may
seem like a sort of basic suggestion, but the first time I opened iBooks, I had
the same problem. I closed and reopened the app, and now the problem has gone
away. You might give that a try.

Re: questions about Logic

2016-02-07 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
1. How accessible is Logic or Logic Pro nowadays? When I first got this Mac
ook pro back in 2009, Logic pro was not at all accessible.

Honestly, Logic is definitely doable. I have used it a few times in the
studio. This being said however, I'm not at all fond by its interface. I
frankly, and this is just my opinion of many, think it sucks! If you've ever
used Garageband, then you'll kind of know what I mean.

The interface is fairly accessible, but is incredibly clunky. Yes, there are
probably over 2000 commands, a lot of which are not assigned, but you can map
any of them to a key command, or to a button on your control surface. I have a
Presonus Faderport, and let me tell you right now. It doesn't work worth a
crap though in Logic. Works almost perfectly though in ProTools. There're a
few minor glitches, but for the most part it works.

Anyway, back to Logic though. I guess it depends on your definition of
accessible, as that's so subjective. My thought is, yes. It's accessible, but
if you are pushed for time, then it's probably not the DAW you'd wanna use.

  2. Does Logic pro offer what is called mid side channel processing?

Not in those exact words, but yes. I know what you're talking about, and
yes, it'll do it. I'm not sure with Voiceover how to, but yes, it'll
definitely do it.

  3. How is Logic pro as a recording app? Will it acomodate audio unit plug
ins?

Oh, absolutely it will! Very very easily.

  And, finally.

  4. What is really the difference between Logic and Logic Pro?
Well, first off, Logic in of itself doesn't exist. Maybe back in the days it
did, but all that is around now that I know of is Logic Pro X. It's available
in the mac app store for $199.99. NO trial, sorry.

Honestly, you'd be better off in my opinion saving a few hundred more, and
just getting ProTools if you're really really serious about recording. Trust
me. This is coming from a fully certified audio engineer.

  Chris.

converting PDF to speech

2016-02-07 Thread Devin Prater
Hi all. I’m trying to turn a PDF file into an MP3 file for a friend with only a
digital talking book player. Any tips? I could probably save it as text, but
then should I use the terminal, or are there other ways? I plan to put the mp3
files onto a flash drive afterwards, so they can’t be just in iTunes.

Is Microsoft Office unusable under El Capitan?

2016-02-07 Thread David Griffith
This is a time for disappointment with apps on my Mac.
Microsoft Word on the Mac appears to have deteriorated in Accessibility since
I last used it under Yosemite.
I had allowed it to install all update.
For example it appears impossible to select text in a manner that is visible
and audible through Voiceover.
I can only navigate characters by using the Quick Nav rota to read characters
and whilst characters are spoken he cursor does not appear to follow this as
any attempt then to edit text will result in editing occurring outside of the
word focussed in the rota.
Also even using the rota selecting text is not a straightforward option.
I am minded to remove Office from myMac and release the subscription for
another machine, possibly a Windows Tablet.

I thought I should check whether again these issues are peculiar to me or
common to others.

I've never had much success with Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac other than for
reading simple documents. However, the typical scenario involves change
tracking, tables, comments, or a combination of these, for which purpose
Microsoft Word 2016 for Mac has always had accessibility issues.

Microsoft Office is most accessible in its "native" environment. The same is
no doubt true of software from Apple (or Google applications under
ChromeVox/Chrome OS, etc.).

RE: Bluetooth still dropping headset

2016-02-07 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Scott,

Thanks for this and yeah I tried the small ear pease but it’s slightly to small
and the large is to large so I’m stuck with the medium size.

Hells teeth, if that’s what it’s costing you for specially made ear peases then
I think I’ll put up with the sizes I’ve got.
Conversion rate would be around 300 nz dollars to get them made.
And knowing my luck I’ll be replacing this edge in 12 months

Thanks for the info though

Hi Simon,
First, try one of the other included ear cushions. They are sized
and maybe a smaller one or larger one will fit better. I know what you mean
though. The only way to get headphones that truly won’t hurt over long
duration is to have them custom molded to your ears. I’ve done this in the
past with extremely expensive headphones but there’s a new company in the local
Mall here selling molded earphones for $230 US which is pretty reasonable. I
believe what they do is 3d print a cover for your existing earbuds that is
based on the mold they take of your ear.
As far as the number of devices, maximum of 8 using only one at a
time. Hope that helps.

Bloody nice headset except that it’s really uncomfortable if your waring it for

I’m finding the proximity censor trips this. If you trip the proximity censor

until you press the talk button on your headset again.

Did you consider that or does this help at all?

Thanks

Just wondered if anyone else is still noticing this?

I know it was questioned last week.

Oh yeah and the edge is great other than uncomfortable.

The Martian: Official Game

2016-02-07 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
I mentioned before that “The Martian” (the movie) was audiodescribed. I’m
happy to tell fans that the official game, which is a text-based chat
simulation, is also completely accessible (if a little tedious to operate).
Knowledge of the plot is not required, although naturally, more enjoyment is
gained by reading the novel. If you have an Apple Watch, glances will show the
biodata readout, and there is a full app that stands in as a reasonable
substitute for the phone app while catching up spontaneously. It is a
real-time simulation, with rest stops and everything. The link is:
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/the-martian-official-game/id1019838009?mt=8

It looks like it’s using the same engine as the Lifeline series of games
(Lifeline, Lifeline 2, and Lifeline: Silent Night). So, once you’re done
rescuing (or, alternatively, killing) Mark, you might like to try those.

I’ll be playing these until I’ve got as much entertainment out of them as I’m
reasonably going to get, but really, I don’t think I’ll be keeping them on my
devices. This is just FYI.

on Android, but not on I O S. That r'r'r'really! is gonna turn me off if that
be the case.

Re: Uber Questions

2016-02-07 Thread Gabe Griffith
Another cool thing about Uber is that you can request a ride for someone else
and keep track of their status. I had a friend come up to the hospital to watch
the super bowl with me this evening. I was able to request a ride and then
texted the driver with my friend's name, that he is blind and would have his
white cane and where he would be waiting. I was then able to make sure he was
picked up when the "on rout" status popped up. It also kept me updated on what
his ETA was and I could see when he arrived.

Where are my Skype Recordings?

2016-02-07 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I just bought Skype Call Recorder from the mac app store. Firstly, the
interface looks slightly confusing. I see a few unlabeled buttons, and they
really don't seem to be doing much of anything when clicked. I see the
checkbox which too is unlabeled. I presume that is the record toggle? does it
matter if I launch the app first, or do I first need to launch Skype, then! the
recorder?

Finally, as my subject goes, unless I did it wrong, I can't find my recordings
anywhere. I didn't look to see if the app still said no recordings. I'll take
a look at that next time I'm by my macbook.

Chris.

No longer a reset button on the back from what I can find.

The new or current devices are the same shape and size as the apple tv gen 2 &

There is meant to be a pin hole reset button but hell I'm having trouble

Thanks and I'll check out that site for more information.
