I found it under Applications. You have to command tab to the application
whilst the continue button is in focus. It was not visible until then. The
actual installer is called Install OS X Yosemite. .

I find grade2 working pretty good, too good when I didn't realise it was on

Re: Conversation Participants being Spoken in Yosemite mail

2014-10-22 Thread BobH.
Deleting the uninteresting threads of grouped messages, cleans up quite
efficiently. Pity we couldn't change this mode on the fly like Outlook, so
we can then read the better bits remaining, more efficiently.

Hi,

The issue with that is that in order to find the answer to a question posed
is that you then have to wade through god knows how many emails to find any
replies. Again, not very efficient. By grouping a conversation you can
quickly get to any responses that may or may not be relevant. I would not
even consider trying to parse messages on a list as busy as this without
grouping.

Hi all

Wondered if anyone could help me with these 2 quick questions.

Firstly, could anyone remind me how to perform a secure empty trash on my
MacBook please? I've done it once before but have forgotten.

Secondly, I've just upgraded to IOS8.1, and wanted to look at the different
voices I could use on my iPad/iPhone. However, when I looked through the
settings, including under accessibility, I couldn't find anywhere which
allowed me to explore different voices etc. Does anyone have any idea where
abouts I should be looking for this??

Many thanks for any help.

Hello Edward,

After countless hours of using Yosemite Mail, on two Macs, one being a ventage
2009 model and the other recently purchased, I can tell you that I have never
lost Message Column item focus in Mail when in Standard View.

Rarely do I use Classic view, anymore, so cannot comment on that portion of the
application.

Hi,

Under Mavericks, Mail retained my place in the message list more often than not
when new messages arrived.

However, under Yosemite, I am jumped to the top of the message list when I
receive new mail. I can obviously use the command to jump to the bottom of the
list, but this still means I have to arrow back up.

I rarely have an empty inbox so I’d be grateful for any suggestions on how I
can stop this happening.

Cheers,

Ed

The 2nd popup option should have about 18 options including those sub menus

Re: Braille screen input

2014-10-22 Thread Eugenia Firth
Ok, good. Just a suggestion, though. If you ever have initials doing that
again, if you use the letter sign, never mind that it's incorrect to do it,
that should let you type them in right. On computers, I use the letter sign all
the time when I'm doing initials where they could be misinterpreted by a
computer. That way, I don't have to reset the braille device. Just a little
work around I use all the time.

Re: Jumping to the top of the message list in Mail/Yosemite

2014-10-22 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
I have found that if you ever lose your place in Mail when not in classic view,
if you press command 1 it will take you to your inbox. I have found this gets
you back, even if you want to go to another mailbox. If you are back to the
inbox and you want to go to another box, you can press shift tab from the inbox
to get to your mailbox list and start going down arrow. As for going to the top
of messages, on my MacBook Pro I can press vo function key, shift left arrow.
That sounds like a lot of keys, but except for the left arrow, they are
together. I have my function keys changed from the default so they work as
standard function keys. I hope all this helps.

Re: my own feedback about Mac OS 10.10 Yosemite

2014-10-22 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Juan
I wasn't going to write about this because I couldn't find an easy answer to
this, and I think there is one. I have a blind friend who just bought a MacBook
Pro under Mavericks, gotten about three weeks ago. We had the same thing happen
with hers that you are describing when we restarted the computer. I was helping
her learn a little VoiceOver before she went back home and started her
one-to-one training. I couldn't figure it out, but when she did go for her
training, Apple fixed hers right away so that the computer defaulted to her as
the user, which resulted in the VoiceOver coming up with her desktop and
everything.

I found an article after I read your post that describes how to set a default
user. I did it by typing in "default user in Macintosh". This step by step
process, but it sounds like yours truly wouldn't want to do it. I never did all
they described in the article because Apple fixed mine so I never did have to
go through the choices you are describing and those my friend had on her brand
new computer.

I guess for sighted people it's easy because you can just click on the user. I
researched this, as I said, and I am sorry I didn't find an easier answer. If
you are a new Mac user you definitely don't want to do what was described on
the Internet. If you are in the States, you might want to call Apple
accessibility at 877-204-3930. Otherwise, I hope someone else can come up with
a better answer than I found on the Internet.

Gigi

 Hi guys
I like Yosemite so far. My Finder is behaving better, etc. However, I had
to call that 877 number again, no choice. It seems that FileVault got me
in trouble when my battery went dead because yours truly let it go down
too far. Then I had trouble, can't remember all the steps, getting
VoiceOver to come on. When it did, I did something stupid that made me get
into changing the password. Now I have ended up with a slightly changed
Apple ID. My sighted husband had to move the mouse at one point because
VoiceOver wouldn't let me get into the place to type in the new Apple ID.

Now I have to let my computer encrypt my files, and then unencrypt them so
that I can disable FileVault. I can definitely see a case for having it on
here, but I am worried about going through the same difficulties I had
this morning should my battery run down again. I'm really more concerned
witht eh accessibility difficulties of leaving FileVault active should
 this happen like this again.

Re: my own feedback about Mac OS 10.10 Yosemite

2014-10-22 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Two things here. First, having the computer start up to a specific user is not
particularly a safe or secure way to leave your computer, as anyone who sits at
your computer has free and easy access to everything on your machine. One may
say that you are the only one who uses this computer, so, it's immaterial.
But, what if your machine is lost or stolen, thus, giving someone easy access
to all you r personal or private data including web passwords if you use that
feature within Safari. Now that I've stated the caveat, if you really want to
do this, read on.

Secondly, to actually do either of these two things is relatively painless with
VO. Go to System Preferences, in the Users & Groups pane. Click the lock at
the bottom of this pane and enter your password, assuming that you're an Admin
user. Navigate back to the top of the pane and Interact with the Users, Groups
& Login Options list. Go down to the Login Options item then Stop Interacting
with the list. Vo-right once which should bring you to the pop-up menu for
choosing automatic logins. VO-space on that menu and choose the user.
Usually, a password prompt will appear for the user's password, enter the
password and you're done. Also, within this Login Options area, you will find
the checkbox for having VoiceOver on in the Login screen. That's it, you're
done.

Again, I don't recommend setting your computer to automatically log in, but
having VO on at the Login screen is great.

Later...

Yosemite, Mail and VO

2014-10-22 Thread Mark Baxter
Okay, I finally un-paused the silly thing, and let it install. Took about half
an hour just for the installation, but after permissions repair, lag is
negligible. However, I wonder if there’s a way to get Mail to put an “add
contact,” button after every message header field? I have to tab about eight
times to get to the Subject field; is there a way to collapse all these
buttons? Also, I seem to have a problem interacting with the Messages table,
often needing to interact twice and then use the VO cursor until it seems to
take. It’s slippery… Other than that, the upgrade seems pretty painless.
What should I look for in the new OS, what’s fun to tweak, etc?
Thanks! :) Be well.

app updates in latest iTunes

2014-10-22 Thread Christina C.
Hello all,

In the app grid for apps that have an update. I use to be able to VO spacebar
on the app and then interact and go to the bottom to see what’s new in the
update. Now, all it says is the size of the app. Does anyone know a quick way
to access the what’s new information other than right clicking on the app and
then choosing show in app store. This process is very time consuming.

Thanks,
Christina

Re: How to play chess on mac?

2014-10-22 Thread Alex Hall
The pieces can't move back unless you issue the command to take back your last
move. You can tell the computer to wait longer, but that only makes it smarter.
Of course, you can take all the time you want, and even close a game and come
back to it later.

Newer Isn't Always Better: Multicore Mac Mini Performance

2014-10-22 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Hi all,

You may recall that I pointed to the new Mac Mini as the only noteworthy
announcement from Apple recently. If you use Mac Minis as servers, I now
withdraw that recommendation. See this article:
http://www.primatelabs.com/blog/2014/10/estimating-mac-mini-performance/

The fact is that Apple has chosen, at the cost of reducing the price, to also
reduce multicore performance of the high-end Mac Mini as part of its design.
For a server, the newest Mac Mini is slower than the older. I am therefore
keeping my older Mac Mini, and leaving behind Thunderbolt 2, 802.11AC and Intel
Iris graphics, all of which are superior in the newer model, but none of which
are important to serving, in favour of the processor performance, which is.

If you don't run servers, Mac Mini may yet prove attractive. But I fear that
this is yet another sign of Apple's trivialisation of the consumer market;
after all, they have a Mac Pro to sell you. It's also worth noting that the
RAM in the newest Mac Mini is soldered in place, just like the MacBooks, so
choose your upgrades wisely. It saddens me to see this development; at least
when it was just software, you could replace it.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

Re: Newer Isn't Always Better: Multicore Mac Mini Performance

2014-10-22 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
That's rather disappointing. So the basic issue is that Apple no longer
ships a mini with quad-core, only dual core. If you want quad for, say,
running vmware you'll have to find something used. According to the
article the new Intel Haswell processors require two sockets for a quad
while the previous chipsets did not, which means Apple would have to
have two slightly different motherboard designs to support a choice of
dual or quad CPUs. Apple tends to keep their line simple with one
montherboard across the line so it's lowest-common-denominator for
everyone. Thanks Intel. I'm assuming Apple's not the only PC maker to
notice Intel's design requirements change and opt to go low-end. Maybe
this is a contributor to the recent stock slump Intel has been going
through, despite hefty stock buybacks.

iOS 8.1 VO bug fixes

2014-10-22 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
There's been a lot of traffic so maybe I missed this but when I upgraded
there were a number of bug fixes listed including the following:

Fixes an issue that prevented Guided Access from working properly
Fixes a bug where VoiceOver would not work with 3rd party keyboards
Improves stability and audio quality when using MFi Hearing Aids with
iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
Fixes an issue with VoiceOver where tone dialing would get stuck on a
tone until dialing another number
Improves reliability when using handwriting, Bluetooth keyboards and
Braille displays with VoiceOver

I know there were some threads on this list about the stuck button and
others.

Re: iOS 8.1 VO bug fixes

2014-10-22 Thread Eugenia Firth
There is another one which I just wrote Accessibility about. If ou go into
Safari, you may find some of the links or buttons absolutely will not work with
VoiceOver. I have this to be true on my 5S for links or buttons that want to
input something. I can’t figure out the pattern because some work and some
don’t. I just did a survey for Apple Care support, and I had trouble getting
the first button to select although I finally beat it into submission. However,
the Next button for going to the following page absolutely refused to work, and
I finally had to switch to my Mac to get it done. I tried the three finger
flick, both down and up, and forget it. I have been able to get one of them to
work by turning VoiceOver off, but that was only once. computers are
interesting, right?

I had those same issues with my 4S, which I unfortunately didn't realize I was

Re: Conversation Participants being Spoken in Yosemite mail

2014-10-22 Thread gs
Hmm. I have also noticed that in Yosemite, it does not seem possible to
collapse the thread with the left arrow. So if you have moved considerably
through a very long conversation, it is quite time consuming to move back to
the first message in order to cause it to collapse with left arrow. Maybe
there is a VO keystroke that will collapse the conversation but I may have
forgotten it if it exists and am too lazy to go and try to locate it. Is
anyone else experiencing this behavior?

Hi,

The issue with that is that in order to find the answer to a question posed
is that you then have to wade through god knows how many emails to find any
replies. Again, not very efficient. By grouping a conversation you can
quickly get to any responses that may or may not be relevant. I would not
even consider trying to parse messages on a list as busy as this without
grouping.

Right arrow expands and no matter how far down into a conversation I am, left

Hi everyone, I'm really enjoying all the new goodness in Yosemite, and
at least on my system, it's magnitudes better than the first release of
 mavericks was. Plenty to enjoy.
There's one efficiency hit I've taken that I've not seen commented on
here, although with so many messages of late, it's possible I've
 accidentally skipped references to it.
I use Standard View in Mail, and Yosemite has adopted the iOS approach
of speaking the names of all participants in a mail thread before the
subject. Does anyone know if there is a way to move this around? For
example, I've been away from the list for a couple of days and came back
to a 90 message conversation. I had to sit through a very very long list
of participants before I could even hear the subject of the thread to
determine whether it was of interest to me or not. That's not
particularly efficient. What I'd prefer to do is hear the conversation's
subject first, then if I have to hear the participants, they could be
 spoken second.
When reading an email list where threads can get quite long, this
current behaviour can add a long time to the experience.
 Thanks.

Re: Copying music etc from the latest iTunes to an iPad or iPhone under yosemeti

2014-10-22 Thread Dean Adams
Hi Tim,
After spending some time with apple they have created a fault ticket
with the engineering team as they have taken away the method I was using to
manually copy music etc across my devices . I have taken your advice and
created a play list and am using that to sync my chosen music , so many thanks
for your tips .

Re: Newer Isn't Always Better: Multicore Mac Mini Performance

2014-10-22 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
It's ironic because I very nearly sold mine to a relative for a low price,
which would have meant I couldn't afford an external storage enclosure I've
been saving for. Now it's worth its weight in gold! Guess we should be
careful what we wish for. It keeps the money in my pocket, anyway, and
validates my Thunderbolt 1 peripherals, which I'm always very happy about.

Still sad to see Apple go down this road though. I'm sure if they did it right
we could trust them to put out a machine you'd never need or want to upgrade,
but to me the only explanation for this nonsense is, well, money; lowering the
low-end costs to meet demand would be a great honour if it didn't mean this,
and maybe it's Intel's fault too, but maybe Apple just doesn't want you
cannibalising their Mac Pro sales, or their iMacs, or MBPs, or whatever. You
wouldn't advise someone needing a replacement I7 2.7 GHz machine to go out and
get a Xeon, would you? No, of course you wouldn't. As it stands right now,
buying a top-end Mac Mini quite simply means that you are getting _LESS_ than
you got in 2012 in performance for a similar price, which is absolutely
incredible.

another strange issue

2014-10-22 Thread Faisal
I’m also having strange issues closing apps. this strange behaviour is not the
same every time but I find that apps such as safari and even mail fail to close
when I do the command q keystroke.
sometimes when apps do close, they are a little slow in closing than they were
in Mavericks.
Is anyone else finding this to be the case?
