That's rather disappointing. So the basic issue is that Apple no longer ships a mini with quad-core, only dual core. If you want quad for, say, running vmware you'll have to find something used. According to the article the new Intel Haswell processors require two sockets for a quad while the previous chipsets did not, which means Apple would have to have two slightly different motherboard designs to support a choice of dual or quad CPUs. Apple tends to keep their line simple with one montherboard across the line so it's lowest-common-denominator for everyone. Thanks Intel. I'm assuming Apple's not the only PC maker to notice Intel's design requirements change and opt to go low-end. Maybe this is a contributor to the recent stock slump Intel has been going through, despite hefty stock buybacks.

Hi all,

You may recall that I pointed to the new Mac Mini as the only noteworthy
announcement from Apple recently. If you use Mac Minis as servers, I now
withdraw that recommendation. See this article:
http://www.primatelabs.com/blog/2014/10/estimating-mac-mini-performance/

The fact is that Apple has chosen, at the cost of reducing the price, to also
reduce multicore performance of the high-end Mac Mini as part of its design.
For a server, the newest Mac Mini is slower than the older. I am therefore
keeping my older Mac Mini, and leaving behind Thunderbolt 2, 802.11AC and Intel
Iris graphics, all of which are superior in the newer model, but none of which
are important to serving, in favour of the processor performance, which is.

If you don't run servers, Mac Mini may yet prove attractive. But I fear that
this is yet another sign of Apple's trivialisation of the consumer market;
after all, they have a Mac Pro to sell you. It's also worth noting that the
RAM in the newest Mac Mini is soldered in place, just like the MacBooks, so
choose your upgrades wisely. It saddens me to see this development; at least
when it was just software, you could replace it.

Cheers,
