It's true that accessibility provides access to otherwise unavailable markets.
I wouldn't be surprised if regulatory considerations also played a role,
especially government procurement requirements that mandate support for
assistive technologies.

Beyond this, there are strong moral reasons for making products accessible -
in modern busines parlance it's called corporate social responsibility.

Finally, speech technologies have applications well beyond the needs of people
with disabilities, and any work that can create a technological advantage in
this area can place one ahead of competitors, especially in connection with
mobile devices, in-vehicle systems, and other contexts in which vision is
preoccupied elsewhere.

Accessibility APIs are also valuable for testing purposes, presumably one of
the reasons why Microsoft's latest API is known as "User Interface Automation"
(UIA). With this, developers can write test cases that exercise the entire
user interface of an application.

I don't know which combination of these or other reasons has most influenced
Apple's policies, or those of any other software developers, other than to say
that, in my experience, regulatory requirements tend to carry considerable
weight.

At this point it's time to conclusions:

Re: Making a clean installation

If you use the Partition tab in Disk Utility, which is visible when you select
the disk device in the table, then select "1 partition" in layout, you can
erase the entire disk and repartition it with one partition in one step. Make
sure to press Options and make sure that "GUID partition table" is selected (it
should already be). Then press apply, press partition, wait a few moments and
it's done.

You will not be able to do this with the recovery partition. You will have to
create USB install media or, if your Mac was purchased with Mavericks on it,
use Internet Recovery. You can't partition a disk while you are booted from
recovery on that disk, of course.

tried the cmd+option+R command thinking i could use speech directly but that
didn't work so i assume you have to get past the selection of available wifi

submitting a podcast in iTunes

2014-07-16 Thread Matt Dierckens
HI all.
If anyone can help me with this that would be great.
I have a podcast that is hosted on a secondary server. Now, I know that iTunes
now requires you to have artwork. The RSS feed works fine if you subscribe
manually to the podcast.
Now when I go to submit the podcast and put in the URL, it gives me an
error, something about the artwork. It doesn't say anything about artwork before
you enter the URL.
If anyone has created and successfully uploaded and had a podcast approved,
please let me know.
Thanks

This is why I suggested making an installer on a thumb drive. I did that, and
I've used it several times on different Macs to quickly upgrade or re-install
the OS. It's fast, local, and works perfectly with speech.

What's the best way to create fillable forms on the Mac?

2014-07-16 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

I'm wondering if there's a way to create fillable forms on the Mac. I like the
form to be able to be filled out by both Mac and Windows users, so it would
need to be in a format that could be opened on a PC. If anyone knows anything
about how to do this, I would appreciate any help.
Thanks in advance,
Donna

Re: Making a clean installation

2014-07-16 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hey, First of all, i'm sorry for asking so many stupid and probably obvious
questions. I shouldn't be needing to do that since i've owned a Mac for at
least 6 years, but then again i haven't done a clean install ever so it's
probably high time to do it.:-) Anyway my question now is as follows: I don't
have a thumb drive that big, but i happen to have an external smallish hard
drive that can work on USB would that work and if so, what's the steps to make
an installer on that hard drive?

Re: Voice verbosity

2014-07-16 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

All that sort of thing is dealt with in the Verbosity options that you've been
modifying. It sounds to me that you may be using one of the other third party
voice options as they have been known to behave differently than expected. Not
sure if there is any way around that though.

Re: What's the best way to create fillable forms on the Mac?

2014-07-16 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

It depends on what you're going to use the form for and how you like the input
to be reported back to you. If it's something like a survey or questionnaire
where you don't mind the results being returned in a spreadsheet, then a Google
Form is my best suggestion. If you have a Gmail account, then you have access
to Google Forms as part of the Google Apps suite. I thought I read somewhere
that you can use Google Forms in another fashion as well where the form and
response are kept together but I haven't figured out how to do that yet, or
maybe I'm just mistaken.

Hi,
You can use the same method has you would use to create the bootable USB
stick but choose the external HD as the target instead. I haven't been
following this thread closely so if the instructions for the USB stick aren't

You may need sighted help to pick from available wi-fi networks from which

Re: Making a clean installation

2014-07-16 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Yes. Once the unit boots off the network, you can turn on VoiceOver. But not
before. Use Ethernet, and you don't have to do that.

It certainly is convenient to build a disposable USB installer thumb drive.
Remember to go to the Mac App Store and download and remake your USB stick
whenever the installer is updated, to save you downloading updates again later.
Still, this is a harder process than it really should be.

How to create a bootable OS X Snow Leopard USB drive from Mac news daily

2014-07-16 Thread Christopher Hallsworth

How to create a bootable OS X Snow Leopard USB drive
by MacDailyNews
[cfsp key="adsense_336x280"]"Even though OS X Snow Leopard has been
around for quite a few years, it remains a favorite for some Mac users
with legacy software support," Andrew Kunesh writes for Tuts+.
"Additionally, some older Macs stopped receiving updates after Snow
Leopard, forcing IT departments to continue support."
"Because of this, it's important to keep a bootable Snow Leopard install
disk around if you have a Snow Leopard machine or manage them," Kunesh
writes. "However, there is no automatic way to create this drive on your
Mac, so I'll show you how to do so in this tutorial."
"Before starting this tutorial, ensure that you have a USB drive with at
least 8GB of storage as well as a Snow Leopard retail DVD or disk
image," Kunesh writes. "Grey DVDs that were included with a Mac at the
time of purchase cannot be used to make USB boot drives as they do not
include drivers for Macs other than the computer it was shipped with.

If I understand correctly, the new operating system Apple has developed
requires all apps developed using it to be accessible. I have also heard
that it is really easy to use by some app developers. That is very

Personally I think apple has done more than anybody else in this field. I
think Android is trying, but personally I believe Apple is better. Then
windows, well, I haven't tried anything since 7, but that left a lot to be
desired. I've also tried 2 different versions of linux and while it's
there, it's still, in my opinion, not as good as apple.

Reformatting and Reinstalling The OS

2014-07-16 Thread Brandon A. Olivares
Hello,

I am giving away my old Mac, and I would like to totally reformat it so it is
like new with none of my old files or applications on it.

The instructions I found talk about holding command-R while starting up, then
running disk utility. My question is, is all of this going to be accessible, or
will I need sighted assistance? I assume this will boot it up into a different
format, and I don't know if voiceover can be started there.

Has anyone done this? Any tips would be appreciated.

Peace,
Brandon

Re: Reformatting and Reinstalling The OS

2014-07-16 Thread Alex Hall
I've done it several times, and if you look at the recent thread on doing a
clean install, that's exactly what you want to do. Yes, it is all accessible,
with one exception. When you boot into Recovery mode, you will need sighted
help to ensure you arrow to the right drive. That is why I suggest making an
install disk on a thumb drive if you can; you can re-use it as often as you
like, and you can use Startup Disk in System Preferences to tell your Mac to
boot into it before you restart. This way you can do everything on your own.
Anyway, once you are in your installer or Recovery HD, hit cmd-f5 to start VO.
You might be using the old Fred voice, but you will definitely have speech.

Alex, just a thought but have you over time downloaded more than one voice
 fro the Voiceover Utility?

I know this wouldn't be the reason why your hard drive should be filling
up so. However, if you have more than one voice that you don't use
anymore, maybe it might be worth it getting rid of it and in the process
 gaining some disc space back.

I know this doesn't solve your problem but just an idea for what it is
 worth.

I hope you will solve the mystery of this strange behaviour.

responsiveness in VMWare fusion

2014-07-16 Thread Scott Erichsen
Hi all,

I'm working with a friend who has a macbook pro 13inch with the complete
maxed out specs. 16gb ram, I7 processor and 1tb SSD.

He is using windows 8 under VMWare fusion.

He's given windows 8gb ram and is finding that the VM is super slow to react
to key presses.

I know that there is a trick to adjusting the buffer size so things will
speed up, but this did horrible things to my system as well as his system
requiring reactivation of JAWS and the sound was horribly glitchy at times.

Is anyone who uses JAWS in a VM on windows 7 or 8 getting great
responsiveness? If so, what did you do? Are you using 32bit or 64bit? 64bit
would be good if possible and are you using a macbook pro or air and what
are the specs.

Recreating the VM or modifying it is an option and I am prepared to work on
this until it's fixed.

Thanks.

Scott

Re: Macbook Drive Mysteriously Full

2014-07-16 Thread Alex Hall
Just to update everyone, I eventually figured out part of the problem. This Mac
came with Mountain Lion, so my Mavericks upgrade held onto the legacy versions
of Numbers, Pages, and iMovie. All told, erasing those three, plus the current
version of iMovie since I never use it, freed up around ten gigabytes of space.
I now have eleven gigs free, which is much better, and that's after installing
both Xcode5 and the Xcode6 beta. Obviously, if you rely on these older versions
of iLife or iWork apps, hang onto them, but if you don't need them and are sure
you never will, you might want to just get rid of them completely. Only those
who performed an upgrade to os10.9 will have this happen to them, I believe,
though I could be wrong and Mavericks might come with legacy versions no matter
what. Anyway, it's something to think about. Also, if you never plan to use
iMovie, you can get rid of that as it is a very large app, over 2GB in size.

I changed my sound buffers so audio games would play better, and this caused my
screen reader to work better too. First, I'd see if it is even that; have a
sighted person watch as you perform normal tasks. If Windows reacts immediately
but speech lags, consider changing the sound buffer size. If the whole thing is
slow, your problem lies elsewhere. If you want the link to the article I used,
let me know and I can dig it up. I can say, though, that I did this with no
adverse effects to my VM (the trick is to completely shut down the VM first).

Hi,
I wonder if just putting a logo or something along with your podcast will work.
Maybe there's some sort of example you can follow for a working example of a
feed that works the way Apple wants it too.

Re: responsiveness in VMWare fusion

I use Windows 7 and NVDA. Yes, this change may well de-authorize Jaws, but
honestly, that's a Jaws problem. It happens if you modify a VM, or change out
the ram in your physical computer, or any other modification. One of the many
reasons I prefer NVDA.

Anyway, here is the link to the article:

Re: What's the best way to create fillable forms on the Mac?

2014-07-16 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi Donna,

Are you needing to create a form with edit fields, checkboxes, drop down combo
boxes? I haven't tried this yet, but if you have office running on the Windows
side and saved it as a DOCX file/template, wouldn't it open in TextEdit or in
another processing app on the Mac side and have the individual be able to fill
in the information? Since I'm not an advance user of the Mac OS and all of the
possibilities that an app on the Mac side would be able to work in this matter.
I'll try to create a small test form and see if I can open it up on the Mac
side and post when I get some idea if it will work. I'm curious myself if this
will solve one issue for me, as I use a template form DOCX in my work to
streamline it and use my time more efficiently. Also, are you permitted to use
digital signatures?

Best,
Eileen

Re: Making a clean installation

Yes. This is normal behaviour. Just quit the installer with command-q.

Hi,

I'll paste in an excerpt from a post I borrowed from somewhere on the web. I
won't take credit for this info as I've borrowed it but can tell you it works
as mentioned. I would use Option #1 myself.

Begin excerpt...
Option 1: Use createinstallmedia
Hidden inside the Mavericks installer is a Unix program called
createinstallmedia, provided by Apple for creating a bootable Mavericks
installer. If you're comfortable using Terminal, it's a relatively simple tool
to use. The program assumes your account has administrator privileges.

Note: This method does not work in Snow Leopard. It works only in Lion,
Mountain Lion, or Mavericks. (The resulting installer drive will let you
install Mavericks over Snow Leopard, but you can't create the installer drive
while booted into Snow Leopard.) If you need to create a Mavericks install
drive while booted into Snow Leopard, you should use the Disk Utility
instructions, below.

Download the Mavericks installer from the Mac App Store and make sure it's in
your main Applications folder. (This means that if you followed my advice to
move the installer out of your Applications folder, you'll have to move it
back, at least temporarily. The Terminal command I'm using here assumes the
installer is in its default location.)
Connect to your Mac a properly formatted 8GB (or larger) drive. Rename the
drive to Untitled. (The Terminal command used here assumes the drive is named
Untitled.)
Select the text of this Terminal command and copy it:
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\
Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled
--applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
Launch Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities).
Paste the copied command into Terminal and press Return. Warning: This step
will erase the destination drive or partition, so make sure it doesn't contain
any valuable data.
Enter your admin-level account password when prompted.
The Terminal window displays the progress of the process, in a very Terminal
sort of way, by displaying a textual representation of a progress bar: Erasing
Disk: 0%... 10%...20%... and so on. The program then tells you it's copying the
installer files, making the disk bootable, and copying boot files. Wait until
you see the text Copy Complete. Done. (This could take as long as 20 or 30
minutes, depending on how fast your Mac can copy data to your destination drive.
You now have a bootable Mavericks-install drive. If you're curious about
createinstallmedia, type or paste the following command in Terminal and press
Return:

/Applications/Install\ OS\ X\
Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia
The resulting text output shows you the (brief) instructions for using
createinstallmedia more generically. (Thanks to a developer on Apple's
Developer Forums for pointing out createinstallmedia a while back)

The createinstallmedia command in Terminal
Using the createinstallmedia command in Terminal
Option 2: Use Disk Utility
You'll find Disk Utility, a handy app built into OS X, in
/Applications/Utilities. Here are the steps for using it to create your
installer drive, which are a bit more involved with Mavericks than they were
with Mountain Lion and Lion.

Note: As mentioned above, based on my testing, an installer drive created using
Disk Utility will not create a Recovery HD partition if your Mac's drive
doesn't already have one. You can determine whether or not your Mac has a
Recovery HD partition using the instructions in our article on recovery mode.
If your Mac's drive is missing the Recovery HD partition, you should use the
createinstallmedia instructions, above, as the resulting installer drive will
create the missing partition when you install Mavericks.

Mavericks show package contents
Right-click (or Control+click) the Mavericks installer to view its contents.
Once you've downloaded Mavericks, find the installer on your Mac. It's called
Install OS X Mavericks.app and it should have been downloaded to your main
Applications folder (/Applications).
Right-click (or Control+click) the installer, and choose Show Package Contents
from the resulting contextual menu.
In the folder that appears, open Contents, then open Shared Support; you'll see
a disk image file called InstallESD.dmg.
Double-click InstallESD.dmg in the Finder to mount its volume. That volume will
appear in the Finder as OS X Install ESD.
The file you want to get to is actually another disk image inside OS X Install
ESD called BaseSystem.dmg. Unfortunately, BaseSystem.dmg is invisible, and
because this is a read-only volume, you can't make BaseSystem.dmg visible.
Instead, you'll mount it using Terminal
