Re: Getting multilingual voices back after upgrading to Mavericks
Hi, Anne, Sorry for not getting back to you in a more expeditious manner. VoiceOver is barely working, but as a very helpful friend on this list has encouraged me to do, I will try to remain relaxed and focused. The German voices I have are from Infovox. I never used the German VoiceOver voices. how would I get them, and what do I need to do to get the Infovox voices to "speak" German again? Secondly and unfortunately, I just installed the upgrade over what I was previously, which was Mountain Lion. I can't repair permissions because I get no response from VO when I click on a lot of the buttons, even when they are the default selection. I may just bring my Mac to the Apple store, along with my Time Machine Capsule. It took me a very long time to even write this simple note, because VO frequently just stops talking for several minutes at a time. However, stopping, and then re-starting VO works some of the time, when VO isn't turning itself off while I write. It's odd. Sometimes when I am writing, the Mac suddenly says: "VoiceOver off." I have a feeling that the problems will go away, once permissions have been repaired. Kindest regards, and please excuse the typos and mistakes! Re: Getting multilingual voices back after upgrading to Mavericks
Hello Mike, If you have access to another Mac, you should download Mavericks to that one without installing it, then make a bootable USB key with which to reinstall Mavericks on your own machine. When you get Mavericks installed cleanly on your machine, do not copy over the Infovox iVox voices. Wait until you've got everything else sorted out then redownload the Infovox iVox voice manager and get the latest versions of the voices. You can download the Mac voices for German from VoiceOver Utility under Speech. Click the Default voice pop up button and go down to Customize and press Return. You'll find a table with all the available voices. Just check the ones you want and download them. arraingeing Files or folders on the Mac
Hello everyone! I have just one question. I once heard there is a way to arrainge the files you want in the order you want. For example I am trying to collect a book series, but the files are not in order, how would I move the files around? Also, is there a way to move the files in Finder Sidebar up or down? Thanks! To arrange files and folders first go to the view menu . Next go to the arrange by submenu then choose name to arrange them by name. Re: arraingeing Files or folders on the Mac
Hi, If you are talking about the finder, then you heard wrong. There is no user defined sort order except in icon mode. Your sorting options are the column headers in the list view. By creating files names with leading numbers in the order you desire, you can achieve this. For example, leading the files names with 001, 002, 003..etc. (note the leading zeros are important.), you can achieve this effect. If you are talking in iTunes, you can use the meta data for your audio tracks to arrange them in the proper order, or create a playlist and add the files in the order you wish to have them in. The option key is often used to reorder items in a list. Although I must say, I've not tried this using voiceover. --k Faith doesn't give you the answers, it merely stops you from asking the questions. Have you tried to make a new presentation? There may be a possabilty that the file is currupt or it is just not there anymore. Have you looked in Activity Monitor? Go to the toolbar, hit the memory button, and you should get a complete overview of your ram. Re: RAM Utility.
If you just mean how much different apps use, the built in activity monitor is more than enough. It's in the "utilities" subfolder of applications, you can get to it with command-shift-u with Finder. Then, in the activity monitor, interact with the tool bar and press the memory radio button. Now, get out of that toolbar and keep going right. You have a table with all processes and their memory usage, and passed that some more general memory info. Jessica, The reason I asked to start a new file is to see if the problem persit. We are just trying to troubleshoot here. If the problem continune if you made a new file then we need to look into what's wrong with that. But if the problem is just the file then we need to see what's wrong with that. Recent discovery about popup buttons…
Hi all, For the longest time, I've composed an email, opened the Signatures popup button, selected my signature, pressed enter, and typed my message. I just made a discovery: you don't need to open that popup at all. I have a business, personal, and CAP signature. I can focus on the popup, but not open it, and type the first letter of my desired signature. VoiceOver says nothing, but if I move away from and then back to the popup, the signature I wanted is selected! No more space or down arrow to open, hitting the letter, then space or enter to select and close. I tested this in the voice selection in the VO Utility, and it worked there too! Is this new, or have I been missing out for these last couple years? Does this work everywhere? -- Have a great day, Alex Hall mehg...@icloud.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Getting multilingual voices back after upgrading to Mavericks
Hello Mike, The idea of the bootable USB key is to ensure that whatever the situation, you can do a clean install of Mavericks without even needing an internet connection. In your current situation, you really need to do a clean install of Mavericks and retrieve your data using Time Machine. For anyone updating to Mavericks who uses the Infovox iVox voices, I would strongly advise them to uninstall the voices and do a Time Machine back up before upgrading to Mavericks as these voices cause a lot of trouble after an upgrade. It's definitely worth reinstalling the voices afterwards as they really are excellent. Another thought. Have you done a Time Machine backup since upgrading? If not, reinstall Mountain Lion, restore from Time Machine then uninstall Infovox iVox, do another back up then you can do a clean install of Mavericks and restore all your information from Time Machine without worrying about the voices. Hey Keith, I've only really started dipping my toe in the water with Hazel, Keyboard Maestro and TextExpander. I'm getting use out of all of them, but not as much as you. One thing that I still haven't played with, is getting Hazel to rename files in the way that you mentioned. For instance, how do you get Hazel to extract the amount payable? Surely in any bill there are a whole bunch of dollar amounts, so how does Hazel know which is the total amount payable and which is just a subtotal or minimum payment or some other figure? Same goes for dates. How does Hazel know which is the due date, which is the issued date etcetera. Re: statusbar in 10.9.2 mavericks
Hello Chris and others, Idd, it has worked for me also since 10.8 but no, it seems not to work anymore: I use Dropbox v2.6.25 and I do the following: vo+m+m : to goeie to the statusbar; vo+arrow to goeie to the dropbox-icon; There I press vo+space or dubbel tab on the trackpad or vo+enter; (the cursors are following each other). I receive the message from voiceover when I tab on the (dropbox) icon: "the keyboard-focus can't be placed on the window; (it's translated from dutch so it's something like that). Re: statusbar in 10.9.2 mavericks
For a while, it was necessary to option click on the dropbox icon to get access to the preferences from the context menu. other app icons also require some creative clicking to access them. I don't know the why or wherefore of all this, I just know to try various clicks on the icons that aren't cooperating like control click, option click and so forth. Re: can somebody help me about microsoft one note
Hi, Probably yes. It is still considered a Purchased item by the AppStore. I wonder if you chose to "Hide" the purchased item, if that would stop some of the stuff you're experiencing. To hide a purchase from the AppStore, do the following: 1. Open the AppStore. 2. Press cmd-4 to bring focus to your Purchased items. 3. Interact with the Table of purchased items. 4. Navigate to the Microsoft One Note item. 5. Press VO-shift-m to bring up the Contextual menu for that item. 6. Choose "Hide Purchase". Actually, I think that's the only choice you have but choose it anyway. HTH. Later... Re: retrieving past versions of files from Dropbox
Just today I brought up the context menu on a file in my dropbox and, wouldn't you know, there was a menu option for retrieving past versions. I gave it a cursory look, but didn't put much time into it. I don't recall if i was in windows or MacOSX at the time either, but it looks like the dropbox folder has the past versions option in the right-click menu. Styles context menu in pages - assigning shortcuts
I spent some time today trying to figure out the styles procedures in Pages. After reading the help files extensively, I tried to locate the context menu for the styles in the paragraph styles table of the styles popup and here's what I found. by setting VO to speak text under the mouse with a short delay, I routed the mouse to the style button, then slowly moved the mouse right until I found "menu". that's the context menu and clicking it brings up the menu where I could rename, delete, update the style etc and also assign shortcuts. It's tricky though, I found that hiding all other apps first helps. Also, routing the mouse the something like the title style, and then slowly dragging down, I could find each style in the style list, and then drag right from the style I wanted. Sometimes I had to go a long way right and even went off the window, then slowly back left I would hear "popup" and then a little further left I'd find the menu button. It appears that, visually speaking, it is a list with the style name and an arrow/submenu symbol at the far right of the menu item. so dragging exactly straight is necessary so as not to slip down or up onto another styles menu button. If in doubt, I simply moved left until I heard the style name, then straight right again onto the associated menu button. with some practice I was able to reliably find the context menu button for any style and assign a shortcut (F1 thru F8). For all I know, this is old hat to all you Pages veterans, but it's a discovery for me. I also found how jumping to the formatter will deselect any text in the body area unless you turn off cursor tracking. I don't know the full significance and implications of this yet, but I have at least discovered the deselecting problem and can account for it. Does anyone care to elaborate on any of this stuff for a new Pages user, and potential convert from MS Word? Thanks, BTW: I have a 1 hour Pages one to one training session coming up in a few weeks and I'm going to put that Apple store trainer through his paces. in particular, I going to grill him on working the whole styles question. I have found that it is a big help to have a pair of eyes supposedly well-versed in the software looking on and commenting as I try to work this thing. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Styles context menu in pages - assigning shortcuts
Hello Phil, You seem to be making life hard for yourself. First of all, I would recommend that you have your mouse set to ignore the other cursors. Then, set the delay to zero for speaking what's under the mouse. Now for working with paragraph styles. Here's an exerpt from my general notes on Pages. Renaming, deleting or setting short cuts for paragraph styles * Press VO-Space on the Paragraph styles button. * Navigate to the styles table. * Interact and find the style you wish to delete, rename, or for which you want to set a short cut. * Interact once more and navigate right once. * Bring the mouse. * If you hear menu button, press VO-Space to open the menu. * Otherwise, scoot the mouse away somewhere by swiping a finger across the trackpad and bring the mouse again. * This time you should hear menu button, so press VO-Space. * Select the appropriate action from the menu and press Return. * If you are renaming the style, just type the new name. * If you are deleting the style it will be deleted. * If you're adding a short cut, choose the one you want from the submenu and press Return.
