Yes it does absolutely. You will need to get the feature pack with it however in order to get the braille keyboard. However, it is well worth the investment. Re: The age old question of which braille display to get
Hi Amy Since you are not yet sure about the job you might get, you might also want to consider the weight of a braille display you get and the features that come with it. I know that my situation is different than most because I have a business doing braille proofreading. In my case I need 40 cells on at least one braille display and preferably two in case one goes to the braille display hospital. Recently, my old PacMate finally crashed, and I had to make a dcision about whether to spend more money on it or get something new. Its braille display was in good shape, so I had to decide whether to keep it or sell it. I bring all this up because I started out wanting to get another 40 cell display by buying a Focus 40 Blue. That is, until I discovered that those babies cost as much as my Braille Edge 40, which has more features, such as the ability to have stand alone note taking features. I paid about $3, and my Braille Edge 40, and they wanted $2,895 for the Focus 40 Blue, and it is only a computer braille display; it also is heavier than my Braille Edge 40. So, I ended up keeping the PacMate Braille display which has 40 cells, keeping my Braille Edge 40 which I won't give up unless I have to, and buying a focus 14 so that I could have another keyboard for my computer and iPhone. That only costed me about $1295. If you can find somewhere to go where they have some of these things in one place, it might save you from some disappointment on a Braille display. Before you ask, in my business it benefits me at times and increases efficiency to have two braille keyboards, which is something almost nobody else will need or find beneficial. I wouldn't find it needful either if programs were set up better for braille proofreaders so that I didn't have to count lines and find page numbers. Oh, and you never know about what might happen with regards to what you might get at work. I just talked to someone whose employer bought them a Mac Book Pro. I have always wanted a braille display, but imo it is nearly impossible to afford one. I can't see paying *that* much for something, I just can't. Re: The age old question of which braille display to get
Hi there I don't think it's realistic for us to expect braille displays to go down that much in the foreseeable future. There's just not that many of us, relatively speaking, who need or want them. Even if braille once again became the hottest thing for us the way it should be, we're a highly specialized crowd and there's a lot of braille displays out there. In my case, I actually make more money by spending the money on the braille displays. This is because one of my customers can use email for sending me work instead of brailling it all up. So, I get the work faster from them. This means I can turn in more work as well. The fewer cells the braille displays have the less they are going to cost. The smallest I ever heard of lately is 12 cells, and I don't think it'd want one that was less than that. You might be able to get some used displays. I did once when I needed one but didn't have much money. When I bought the used one, I ended up getting several hundred dollars off the price. Not only that, but the display has lasted and is still going for several years. Re: Recommendations For BT Keyboard For Mac Air With Page Up/Down & Home/End Keys
Hi, Do not waste a gray hair on worrying if the keyboard will wear out. Your SSD will die before that happens. In regards to the logitech K750, that is NOT a bluetooth keyboard. It uses a proprietary USB dongle and requires a free USB port. Not to mention, the reviews of that model are horrid on Amazon. I find there is a huge void of full sized bluetooth keyboards and stand alone bluetooth number pads out there. I have tried the belkin number pad sold at the Apple store and it is a piece of junk. Has major pairing issues and poor bluetooth connectivity in general. I've tested it across five different Macs. RE: Recommendations For BT Keyboard For Mac Air With Page Up/Down & Home/End Keys
Hello regarding the k750 you are right about using it with a ipad but I am using it with a mac book pro and running win 7 and have had no trouble with it so I don't know what the adverse comments are but I find it does all I need and the number pad makes life easy when I have to use it -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Kayaker Sent: Monday, February 24, 2014 11:04 AM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Recommendations For BT Keyboard For Mac Air With Page Up/Down & Home/End Keys Hi, Do not waste a gray hair on worrying if the keyboard will wear out. PDF documents and filling in PDF forms.
Hello. I am using Mavericks and got a PDF form to fill in. Before in Mountain Lion, I could open PDF documents in Text Edit and fill in forms. However, in the Preview I can read the form but can't fill in the form. Pages is dimmed. Have not opened it in I books as I books wasn't that good and I don't know if I can fill in documents. Hi, Have you restarted your Mac? Force Quitting the Finder often causes lots of issues from a VO prospective prior to a restart. The restart should fix those sorts of things. Which Braille display to get
Hi Aimee, I know this wasn't on your list, and it's smaller, but I love the Handytech products. I have a 20-cell display called a Braillino. They have 40-cell ones as well that also function as notetakers. I have had no problems pairing with my Iphone 5 and the Macbook, and Mac Mini. I usually keep the bluetooth on my iphone off, so I have to enter the bluetooth pairing code sometimes when I want to pair my Braillino with it. Handytech's display, at least the Braillino comes with four rechargable double A batteries. I like it because the batteries aren't proprietary and you can charge them with the charger provided. I don't work for Hadytech, just a satisified customer. Their website is: http://www.handytech.de/produkte.php?kategorie=1 They have a website for the states, but I can't remember it at the moment. I hope I've helped. trying to install some apps mentioned from a podcast
Hello everyone, So my wife and I are looking at this one podcast which I will provide the link to which is reguarding remapping the voiceover keys to the caps lock key as well as creating a numpad around the I key etc. We’re wanting to see if we can do this so that her vm fusion experience is possibly a little better being that she doesn’t have a full keyboard to use therefore not being able to use things like the jaws cursor or mouse clicks with jaws. The podcast we’re looking at is the following: http://www.applevis.com/podcast/episodes/new-updated-remapping-keys-your-macs-keyboard-enhance-voiceover-experience On here it mentions to go to pqrs.org’s website and download two apps called keyRemap4MacBook and PcKeyboardHack. However the link it provides to do this doesn’t seem to exist and when we go just to pqrs.org we can only seemingly find the first app. Also, when we go to that link the installation instructions are pretty confusing so hoping someone can give us some advice on how to better understand what we need to do. Thanks again for any help on this matter as usual. Also, if anyone has experience running vm fusion on their mac and has success please feel free and send me some e-mails directly maybe offlist as it seems as if we have some random issues that we’re not quite sure how to resolve at the moment. Re: trying to install some apps mentioned from a podcast
I did this last week. The KeyRing app is at the link you visited. I believe there's a link called Other apps or something to that effect and you'll find the PC Keyboard hack there. It's not on the same page as it was when the podcast was developed and I had to look around for it. After you have them, the podcast is very descriptive about what to do. The hardest part was finding that second app but after that the instructions will all work as advertised. Oh, there was one other difference. If you're running Mavricks, you are instructed to go to apple preferences and make some changes. The newly installed apps didn't appear in my apple preferences, but opening each of them revealed the same options he was describing and everything worked as advertised. I don't want to go through the tutorial again, he did a great job, but after you find them, if there's something specific, I'm sure we can help. As I said, finding that second app isn't quite where he said now, but it's still up there and you need them both for this to work. A Few Annoying Problems Still in Mavericks Any Work Arounds
After removing gmail and having it off my computer for a week, mac mail is working a lot better, but I am still experiencing quite a few annoying problems, and wanted to see if anyone had any work arounds or suggestions. 1. In Mac mail hitting return doesn't open the message no matter how many times I hit return. To see the message I have to either use the window chooser menu to pull it up or toggle between another open program and back to mail and the message I hit return on is front and center. 2. In iTunes the contextual menu just stops working meaning when I hit VO shift M nothing happens, this only happens in iTunes and a recent restart of my computer which usually fixes this did not. 3. Bluetooth issues really annoying as my track pad constantly loses connectivity but I am able to reconnect it in the bluetooth menu after disconnecting and reconnecting. My Logictech K760 keyboard works for five minutes and then will not reconnect to the computer but if I restart my computer it will reconnect. The keyboard worked absolutely fine in Mountain Lion and this started as soon as I installed Mavericks. 4. Programs are still very slow to launch and I am still getting what seems like way to many busy busy messages in many programs. Any advice? First have you tried interacting with the text of the email with vo j? Try interacting with the email with vo j to open it to see if that works. Is this after a clean install? My app launching problems disappeared, so long as I don't have a resource hog like Xcode open, after I did that. I've not seen the mail problem you describe, and I rarely use iTunes or bluetooth. Sorry I can't help more, but my first thought is a clean install if you haven't done one. Hello; Could I get a few more details on item number 2 on this list? Just where within iTunes does this problem exhibit itself? Are you on a particular control that you expect a contexual menu to appear? What would that item be? Any help would be welcome. Re: lots of questions on mac
Hi, Do you know which version of GarageBand you're running. Version 6.0.5 or version 10.0.1? You can figure this out by either going into your Applications folder and doing a cmd-i (Get Info) on your GarageBand app or by going under the GarageBand menu while in GarageBand and choosing About GarageBand. In version 10.*.*, you need to make sure that you've chose the type of project you wish to work on, either new or existing, otherwise, the Help and Preferences stuff will be dimmed and thus, unavailable. Also, make sure that Quick Help is turned off, that is, if it is checked in the Help menu, then uncheck it by going to it again and pressing return on it. Later... Re: TextEdit for iOS
Hi there I guess you know, and I didn't at first, that you can write text files with your Braille Edge 40 in grade 2 braille and they get translated. I thought you had to write the text files in computer braille, but no. I do this all the time these days, then copy the text files to my Mac and edit in TextEdit if I feel like it. Then I can use, if I want, command shift t to make it into a rtf file. What I really want these days is the ability to write rtf file on my Braille Edge 40. You can read them these days, but if you make the mistake like I did once of trying to save an rtf file, you lock up the Braille Edge 40. If I understand correctly, it's not a matter of being infected. Re: mac os7 with outspoken
Hi, VoiceOver is built-in to MacOS X whereas OutSpoken was an add-on to the pre-MacOS X operating systems. Similar to the various screen-readers available for Windows, you had to install it after the fact. It was a great little screen-reader for it's time but Apple decided to try to make it's accessibility features even better by having them be available to everyone always. Things like the NumPad controller kind of take their feel from the original OutSpoken interface. No, it was much different than the IntelliTalk system. HTH. Later... Re: TextEdit for iOS
Hi there That's just it. You don't have to back translate anything. That's the beauty of it. the Edge does the back translating as you go. I was real surprised when I found out about this. You set your new file to be a text file, and you set your translator to be the kind of braille you want like English or UEB or whatever. Then you just braille in it, copy your file to your Mac, and presto, translated braille file. I also found out you can paste from a brf file into your text file, and presto, it's translated. Re: mac os7 with outspoken
I remember our creative writing/English3 teacher at FSDB had some program of some sort on the mac she used that was audible but didn't seem to be a full-fledged sceen reader, unless she didn't use it as one, sense that computer was pretty much for her use only, but it would ask the usual "are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?" and if you wanted to, you could click on stuff from the internet and have the program read it, but not sure what it did aside from that, so have no idea what the program was called. I remember it having all those wild robotic-sounding voices that voiceover stilll comes with, that would be fun to use as sound affects, but would never use as reading voices. Re: TextEdit for iOS
I forgot to say when I replied last time that yes the only way to get your files out of your braille display is to take the card out. I just make sure that I take the card out after I have done the space Z command to get out of the notepad program. I don't know if I have to do that, but I am chicken not too. Ever since a long time ago my husband fried my Apple II by putting in a card without turning it off, I have been very leery about taking things in and out without getting out of my program or turning off my device off. However, I have not found this to be a problem at all. Re: Amazon Kendle App versuses Audiblee App
The only way to read kindle books on an iOS device is with the kindle app. Yes it uses the VoiceOver voice but the app has to be installed to access the books. Although amazon own audible and kindle this doesn't make them the same. Kindle books are ebooks so digital print/text books. Audible books as the name implies are audio books or talking books if you rather. They play in either the audible app or in the music app but in the music app have to be loaded from a computer. There are many more kindle titles and their usually cheaper but can only be listened to via your voice overs peach so you don't get human narration which can be a negative or a posative depending on several issues such as navigatio of material, quality of narration and personal preference.
