Well on Windows it's actually called Uefi if I'm correct. It works like Efi with some differences obviously but wouldn't know what they are. My nearly dying laptop uses the good old inaccessible bios.

Chris,

You may have brought up something. I have been seeing something about EFI, but
did not know what that means. Now the million dollar question, where can I find
a EFI Vinux? lol. I may just have Vinux boot up on my Windows machine and use
the Startup program to make a bootable USB.

Thanks!

The link pasted below to a discussion thread might help you track down some
answers. Apparently Windows boxes use BIOS and Macs use EFI firmware for
bootstrapping the machine. So while the Linux bases are nearly identical, the
bootup process is different and you'll need to have an EFI-based booter to make
things go. Most distributions assume a BIOS-based box.

Hi,

Bootable on a Windows machine doesn't always mean bootable on your Mac though.
If you're not seeing in in the possible Startup Disks, then your Mac won't boot

Hello,

I completely understand you. Under the Startup menu I don't see the bootable
cd, but yet that cd does work on a Windows PC, so I know the cd is bootable. I
have seen the guide how to make a bootable flashdrive, but I am not sure the
program that you are to use on the Mac is accessable, and it involves command
line use. That is over my head lol.

But now, when I try to boot from the cd, by pressing C, there issomething on
the screen if I turn off the lights, but nothing happens. Vinux should start
talking when it starts up, so now I think the bootable cd is now working, I
just need to find a sighted person.

Thanks!

Hi,

Either I'm not understanding you, your typing different info than you're doing, or your not quite understanding what I'm recommending that you do. Disk Utility will not assist you with the boot-ability of your CD. Your absolute best method is to go into the System Preferences, press on Startup Disks and see if the CD that you hope to boot from is listed there. If it is, VO-space on it then navigate over to the Restart button. If it's not there, then your CD is not bootable by your Mac. Holding down the Option key at startup will only give you the list of possible Startup Disks that this pane gives you while in System Preferences, with the added issue that it is not accessible. For the most part, the Option key method is only useful to you once you know that something is bootable. There are a number of reasons why it may not boot with your Mac including disk format, external vs internal device etc. Here's an article on creating a bootable USB drive that may assist you
in this endeavour.

Ok, the Vinux cd is bootable. I can do this on a different computer that have
CD drive first to boot before the Harddrive. Also in Disk Utility there is
nothing about a disk other than the Mactintosh HD and Bootcamp.

So, I am stumped here, I was thinking about holding the Options key at startup,
but I have Bootcamp with Windows 7 already installed. I know there are three
options to choose from other than the Super drive. The thing is which option is
the CD drive?

Have anyone else successfuly booted a Linux cd on a Macbook Pro?

If you get a black screen, your disk is not bootable. Hold down your option
after hearing the start up chime and hold it for a minute to be sure. Press the

should be formated as journal extended or something if you want ot do a clean
install.

Take care

Hi,

When you go into System Prefs, in the Startup Disks pane, with your bootable CD
in the drive, do you see it as a startup option? Seeing it in Disk Utility
only tells you that the disk is there, not if it is bootable on a Mac.

Hello everyone,

Ok, I tried the Disk Utility and I can see the Mac HD drive and Bootcamp, but
not the bootable cd. So I tried the cd on another Windows PC and it worked. So
I went back to my Mac, and tried holding C when I restart. Something happens
but the screen is dark, I think since I don't see light. I acually let my Mac
sit for 15min, just give it time to load. But nothing happens. So I tried
thehard shutdown and restart holding C, still the same thing. SI can hear the
DVD drive spool up and spin for a min then it dies down.

Do you guys know of another option? I hear that you can hold the Options key at
startup, but I don't know how many times you press the right arrow.

Any info on this would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

Best thing to do is to have the CD/DVD loaded into your drive then go under the Apple

the Possible Startup Disks Scroll area and choose your bootable CD/DVD by pressing
VO-space on it. Stop Interacting with the Scroll area then press the Restart button in
this pane. If the bootable CD/DVD does not show up in the Startup Disk pane, then it's
not bootable. Also, if you know for sure that it is bootable, you can press
"c" as the startup chime sounds which will force the Mac to startup from a
bootable CD/DVD.

I have been reading up on Linux accessabilty and want to give Vinux a shot by
running off a bootable CD. So far I figured how to burn an ISO file to a cd, so
I hope it is good. But my question is, is the Macbook Pro set by default to
first boot from the Optical drive before the HDD? If not, is it accessable to
change that?

Any info on this would be very very helpful, thanks!
