glad it's not just me then.
I just wondered that's all if anyone's figured it out.
At the worst, I can unsubscribe from my iphone 5 and then that synchs to my Mac
using Downcast. All with iCloud synchs. So this effectively is a way I can do
it.

Doing it on the map, is extremely fiddly. I have found, like Nicholas, that is
best to do this on the iPhone. I have done this on the Mac a couple of times,

Re: Why isn't a movie downloaded onto my iPhone also on my authorized MacBook?

2014-01-25 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Go into iTunes Preferences on your Mac, select the Store tab, check the box for
"Show iTunes Purchases in the Cloud", click OK. Wait about 10 seconds or so
depending on your Internet and computer speed then go back to your Movie grid
or list. It should be there. You can either leave it in the Cloud or press
VO-shift-m on it and choose Download if you prefer it locally.

HTH.

About to tear my hair out trying to search in iTunes Store on My old MacBook with Mountain Lion and iTunes

2014-01-25 Thread Christine Grassman
Hello all. Although Apple claims that one has access to purchased movies across
devices through iCloud, this is apparently not true if you download originally
on your iPhone. So, I got Apple to reestablish the ability to purchase the
movie I originally downloaded to my iPHone via the iTunes store.
Now, however, I cannot get to the movie. I cannot find a search box anywhere. I
select movies, then action and adventure from the pop-up menu, but I cannot
locate the search box. I have tried looking under "browse," "explore," and
"quick links". I have gone through headings, links, etc., with the rotor. I
have typed in the word "search" using search, but am getting that annoying
error sound. I can determine absolutely no way of finding this movie on my
MacBook.
I have done a Google search trying to locate workarounds. If someone can
assist, I would appreciate it.

It does appear to be working -- I don't know, either. Perhaps they meant that I
couldn't *sync* the movie to my MacBook if I originally purchased and
downloaded it via the iPhone? Regardless, they should have told me how to
access it via iCloud. Very sad that two different people, including a

Re: Why isn't a movie downloaded onto my iPhone also on my authorized MacBook?

2014-01-25 Thread Tim Kilburn
hi,

There's also another option that should work if bandwidth or data is a factor.
While connected to your iPhone and in iTunes, you should be able to go under
the File menu, down to Devices then choosing Transfer Purchases from my iPhone.
I've used this kind of option back when I had the 1st Generation Apple TV and
it worked as well. This option may even be quicker than the Cloud option
depending on your Internet connection.

Glad you're having success.

Re: About to tear my hair out trying to search in iTunes Store on My old MacBook with Mountain Lion and iTunes

2014-01-25 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Check your library. The key for entering the search is command+F. IF you are
using the new standard view, you want to look just to the right of the search
box. There is a pop up menu which, when you open it, will take you to
different parts of your library. Also, you might want to make sure that show
content for Icloud is turned on. This, I believe, is done from the store menu.

Re: Why isn't a movie downloaded onto my iPhone also on my authorized MacBook?

2014-01-25 Thread Christine Grassman
It worked. !!! Now I see that it offers the option to "play" or "download" in
the movie grid. If I hit download, it will be on my computer to watch anywhere,
correct? I will not have to have access to the Cloud to watch it somewhere
without a WiFi connection, right?

Re: unsubscribing from a podcast on the mac using Downcast

2014-01-25 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Dear All.

I think I have found out the answer why you can’t do anything with the Downcast
app. However, I need confirmation of the following.

First, when I bought the App, some time last year I think, when I think Nic was
singing its praises, I decided to get it because Downcast was so neat on the I
phone and iTunes on the Mac was crap for podcasts.

So at the time I got it, in the file menu, it was easy to add podcasts for your
listening pleasure.

Now, Nic, as you had the app first, can you tell me, was there a search box in
the app, where you could type what you wanted and when you pressed enter, a
list of podcasts would come up and you’d stop interacting and vo right to the
add button?

I have killed my app using terminal because when I try and sync my I cloud
preferences so I only use the I phone to sync what I have, the app becomes busy
and it locks up. I had to destroy what was in the downcast containers.

However, if I try and do what I use to do with downcast, there is no search box
and you can’t use the file menu to add podcasts or to search for podcasts which
makes me think the app has changed.

I hope Nic you can tell me if the app has changed.

Kawal.

Re: closing background apps

2014-01-25 Thread Teresa Cochran
You'll have to switch to each one with command-tab and then use command-q to
quit. If an app becomes unresponsive, you can use the force-quit dialog, which
is command-option-escape. Pick an app, and use return to quit. It will ask for
confirmation, and you can press return again. Keep in mind that this force quit
applications window will remain open until you close it. It will not show up
when you command-tab, so you'll have to choose it with VO-f1 twice quickly,
which is the running applications list. You can also use the applications list
to find out how many apps you have open and go to them to quit.

HtH,
Teresa

Slow down; you'll get there faster.

VO-backslash should do the trick. Sometimes you can use arrow keys, but the

Re: closing background apps

2014-01-25 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

In addition to what Theresa has mentioned, you can close apps from the Dock.
Press VO-d to bring VO focus to the Dock, navigate right or left and listen to
what VO announces. It will tell you if an app is open by announcing “Open”
after announcing the app name. If you wish to Close/Quit that app, press
VO-shift-m to bring up the Contextual menu then the letter “q” to take you to
the Quit option. Press return and, if nothing needs saved, the app will quit.
one thing to note, closing a window on a Mac simply closes the window, it does
not quit or close the app. There are a few exceptions to this as in System
Preferences but this is the rule for the most part. If you wish to quit the
app while in it, simply press cmd-q and it’s done, unless a document needs
attention.

HTH.

Re: how to expand folders

2014-01-25 Thread Alex Hall
Depends on the view. In Column View, use cmd-down to open a folder, and cmd-up
to close it. In List View, use right arrow to open it and left arrow to close
it (sometimes you'll need to hit it twice). I don't recommend the other two
Finder views if you are a Voiceover user. also, Voiceover can sometimes cause
Finder to hang in List View in the current version of Mavericks.

Re: Unreal VoiceOver very choppy again

2014-01-25 Thread BBS
Hi guys. The only times I have issues with Voiceover having stuttery speech in
Mavericks is when starting up my Mac after shutting it down, which is rare, and
if using Fusion in the background Windows is doing something heavy like an
update or being stupid. Other than that, my Mac runs great. Apps launch fast
and it’s all good. As for Bryan’s issue with Voiceover skipping when reading
emails, have you tried not interacting with the text of the message and letting
VO read automatically? This is what I do and it never skips. Oh and I’m using
Karen for my Voiceover. Can’t stand Tom because he sounds robotic. At least
Karen has a lot of inflection in her voice.

Hey Scott. Glad to hear that the Mac is going well for you. I remember when I
got the Mac I'm on almost 4 years ago. I was kinda confused with the whole
interacting thing with Voiceover, but that I learned that quick. Next thing I
knew I was downloading apps on here. I think the first 3 apps I downloaded on
here were Skype, Adium, and RS Games. I couldn't figure out why RS wasn't
working but I found out quickly that I had to put anything with the app
extension into the applications folder in order to work because it won't run
from the dog which is a disk image. Now I'm that advanced that I have Windows
on this thing, (which I kinda hate doing but have no choice because businesses
use Windows and if I could find an app developer that would make QuintinC's
Playroom available for the Mac for free since the owner of it is too cheap to
make it himself,) and Mavericks is now the third OS version upgrade I installed
myself. So yeah, it's not too hard to master it. Good luck with your learning
experience.

Can you pair that keyboard with all three devices at once, or just one at a
time?

You can pear it with all three…You select which device by selecting [f1], [f2]
or [f3]. David Woodbridge did a podcast on this keyboard. I think his podcast
is called Apple Accessibility or something like that.

Now, however, I cannot get to the movie. I cannot find a search box

I have done a Google search trying to locate workarounds. If someone can

Questions regarding Twitter

2014-01-25 Thread Jim Portillo
Hi there,

I wasn't quite sure if this question was appropriate, but since I can use
Twitter with either a computer or an iDevice.the twitter website or twitter
app or TweetList, I figured I could get some kind of answer.

I was told that one could have lists or groups on Twitter where you can
group your friends or people you're following. First of all, is this true,
and how exactly does that work?

Also, if I post a tweet, is it possibly for only a certain group or list to
see that tweet? If so, how would I go about doing this?

So, if anyone has any tips or advice regarding working with Twitter and
groups, I'd love to hear from you.

Oh, while I'm at this, I'll ask one final question. There are people
following me that I don't know. How can I remove them from the list of
folks following me, especially since I don't know them?

Thanks for any help. This would be worth while.

Jim

Some VoiceOver Success

2014-01-25 Thread April Brown
I got stuck in Pages and couldn't figure out how to get to where I wanted.
I eventually got there.

Next tried Email, and was able to read a couple right quick. Didn't try to
save any. That's for another day.

Opened Calendar. Was able to have it read what I had already inputted for
today. Was able to open a specific item, though didn't try to change
anything, and couldn't get back out of it. Closed it in the Menu.

Opened Safari. Went to CNN. Had it read the story of the blind mechanic
to me. Closed it in the menu.

A long, long, long way to go. Yet able to make a bit of a start.

Thanks everyone!

Re: Questions regarding Twitter

2014-01-25 Thread April Brown
Hello.

Yes, you can have Twitter lists. I had the maximum, amount of lists until
I became to blind to keep up. Now, I have bookmarks, agents, science, and
so on.

No to the next part. When you post, it goes to everyone who follows you.
As far as I know, Google Plus is the only social network that makes sharing
with only one list easy. Facebook has that capability, thought it is often
confusing. Twitter doe not. Twitter does have a private message system,
though, like all the other networks.

On Twitter, if people are following you, and you don't want them to, you
can block them. Otherwise, you can't stop them from following you. It's
not a reciprocal social media like Facebook is.

Bottons dimmed in column view

2014-01-25 Thread Daniel K. Gartmann

Hi,

On a couple of MACs running Mountain Lion and SnowLeopard respectively,
I'm seeing that the menu item for creating a new folder in the "Archive"
menu of Finder is dimmed in the Column View. In List View the item is
properly active. This happens when trying to create folders on a card
inside an external usb card reader.

Anybody else experienced this issue?

Best regards

Re: Questions regarding Twitter

2014-01-25 Thread Alex Hall
Twitter is meant to be a public thing, not a network for only those who are
"friends". So, you can follow anyone at all, and anyone at all can follow you.
Don't tweet personal information and you will be fine.

Lists are the feature you want. You can add people to lists without following
them directly, so their tweets appear in that list but not in your main
timeline. For instance, you can add @cultOfMac and @MacWorld to a Mac list,
then follow your family. Your family's tweets will appear in your timeline, and
the Mac-related tweets will not, instead appearing only in your Mac list.,

PDF files and taxes

2014-01-25 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys
I just wanted to let some of you know that I just filled out a Schedule C using
PDF Pen Pro on my Mac. The only trouble I had was when I tried to go to another
file, and it crashed the program. However, when only opening the one file I was
editing, I had no trouble at all. I know some have had trouble, but that means
that this is very possible on our systems now and that would be an individual
thing.

For those of you who were talking about taxes earlier, I found that apparently
the 2013 forms from the IRS that are accessible for us are out earlier this
year. One year, I had to call someone in DC to get my accessible Schedule C
form. This is turning out a lot better than what I went through last year, and
I don't have to deal with the Capsha.

Regards,
Gigi

Hi April
I usually suggest that new Mac users start with Text Edit and maybe email.
Safari with accessible sites first that you know. If anything can frustrate us,
no majter what the system, it's the web and/or pdf files.

Home Phone with bluetooth that speaks to you

2014-01-25 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

Sorry for the off topic post, but this is the only place I thought I might be
able to get an answer. I need to get a new home, and just discovered that a lot
of home phones can now also connect to your iPhone via bluetooth. I also want
the talking caller ID announce feature that my old home phone currently has,
and finally figured I would email the list to see if anyone has a
corded/cordless home phone system where you might be able to access all the
menus with some kind of VoiceOver similar to the iPhone, not even sure if
something like this with all the features I want is even made. I found a
corded/cordless phone system with bluetooth and talking caller ID and am
posting the link here, but doubt I will be able to access all of the phones
features, and just wanted to see if anyone knew of such a thing, if so please
share the brand and model with us. Thanks,

copying music from itunes

2014-01-25 Thread don bishop
Hi,

I have all my music on idevices and the cloud. I want to copy some items from
itunes to an sd card to play in another device, not an idevice.
What’s the best way to copy music out of itunes and onto the card?
Thanks,
Don

Ray, yes the Logictech 7600 is very worth the money especially if you want to
constantly toggle between multiple devices with the same keyboard, it’s
fantastic.

Re: copying music from itunes

2014-01-25 Thread Alex Hall
If you want to copy it directly to the SD card, open your Home folder
(cmd-shift-h) in Finder. Open Music, then (I think) iTunes Library. All your
music should be there. Note that if you disabled iTunes' option to copy music
to its library, your music will not be there but will be wherever you stored it
when you dded it to the library.

Hi Don,

The easiest way in my opinion is to place the songs you want into a playlist,
then Interact with that same playlist, cmd-a to Select All, cmd-c to Copy these
songs, get to the Finder, either create a new folder or open an existing one,
then paste them into that folder.

Re: got my New Macbook Pro yesterday

2014-01-25 Thread Scott Berry
Shoot not bad at all. I already have the major VO commands down. I am doing
well with interactions. I also have the dock down and how to move stuff and
have the Mac pretty much set the way I want. It's really awesome and

Re: got my New Macbook Pro yesterday

2014-01-25 Thread Alex Hall
Scott, I have no idea how much you know about Mac resources, so sorry if this
is redundant. I run a Twitter account called @VOTips, and the timeline of that
account has some really useful tips and tricks for iOS and OS10 from a
Voiceover perspective. Then you have www.applevis.com, with app reviews,
podcasts, forums, blogs, and guides/tutorials on all things Apple.

As to Bootcamp, if you're really comfortable in the Mac, I wouldn't. Both
Bootcamp and a virtual machine application have their pros and cons, but I made
a 200gb Bootcamp partition when I first got my Mac. Now I wish I hadn't, and am
about to remove it in favor of a virtual machine. I only did Bootcamp because I
was new to the Mac and needed a computer I knew how to use. Since you are
already fine with your Mac, you might consider skipping Bootcamp and going
straight to a VM. Again, I know both methods are good for different situations,
and I encourage you to research them thoroughly before making the choice, but
if your Mac can handle it, a VM might be a better solution than taking up a
bunch of hard drive space with Bootcamp.

so, you’d need to navigate to the Title or Body of your slide at which time VO
would read whatever item is in focus.

> Also, how do I add presenter notes to a slide with this new version?

• Go under the View menu and choose Show Presenter Notes.
• There will now be two Slide Layout areas. The first is the area for Title,
body, Images and such and the second is the Notes area.
• It seems that you need to route the mouse to the Edit field in the notes area
and click the trackpad to allow you to enter your notes. A VO-shift-space may
work but I haven’t tried that.

Restoring from Time Machine

2014-01-25 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I'm about to format my hard drive, remove my Windows partition, and re-install
Mavericks. I have a Time Machine backup that' I've been keeping since November,
so there are different versions of everything. Once my system is back up, how
do I restore my documents? I'll be re-installing my apps, but my music, movies,
projects, and plenty of other files will need to be restored. I've looked at
the Time Machine interface, but there is no accessible way I can find to select
a backup's time, so how do I know I will be restoring the latest versions of
everything? Is there anything else I should know about using Time machine for
this purpose (restoring only some files0? Once complete, should i wipe the
backup and do a fresh one, assuming my system is behaving better than it is
now? Thanks for any help!

TeamSpeak 3 connections dialog

2014-01-25 Thread Phil Halton
I tried using the TeamSpeak 3 client tonight after installing and updating to
the accessible beta version 3.14 with QT5.
All looked well until I tried to enter an address in the connect dialog. I
found that it was not possible to enter text into the various edit boxes for
address, nickname, password etc. The same problem occurred in the bookmarks
dialog and I have been unable to type in a server address in any of the needed
fields. Is anyone using this client and are you experiencing any problems
entering text in the connect dialog?

Re: Restoring from Time Machine

2014-01-25 Thread Ray Foret Jr
My experience is that you don’t do the time machine backup until after you’ve
done the reinstall. You want to go from Utitilies, select to do a time machine
backup, then, from there, you are presented with a table of drives from whitch
you can select the drive from which you wish to do a backup. Now, once you’ve
selected that drive, you should see a table consisting of dates on which
backups were done. IF I remember correctly, the most recent date is at the
bottom of this table. Anyhow, once you’ve selected a date, you do the backup.
This tends to take a while.

seeing wish list in Library anyone?

Okay,

I’m quite sure that by now, all y’all have noticed that the new update for
ITunes supposedly allows one to see one’s wish list directly in one’s library.
Can’t see how to do that though. Anybody figured out how yet?

hi, I am very disappointed with keynote 6.1. voiceover used to read the
contents of my slides when I was not playing a presentation. It won't read it
now. What am I doing wrong?
Here are the steps i take:
1. find the slide i want to read
2. interact with the scroll area.
3. vo left and right arrow which is currently not working.

Re: got my New Macbook Pro yesterday

2014-01-25 Thread Alex Hall
Multiple mail accounts are very easy. Add the new one in Mail's preferences,
and it will show its messages right in your inbox. In other words, Mail offers
you a unified inbox. If you want to see only one account, go to the mailboxes
table, arrow to inbox, right arrow to expand it, arrow to the account you want,
and then head over to the messages table. Any folders shared by multiple
accounts (such as sent or drafts) will have the same structure - unified by
default, but you can always expand them in the mailboxes table to view messages
from a particular account. I believe Adium is an instant messaging app, but am
not certain.

Hey Scott. Glad to hear that the Mac is going well for you. I remember
when I got the Mac I'm on almost 4 years ago. I was kinda confused with
the whole interacting thing with Voiceover, but that I learned that quick.
Next thing I knew I was downloading apps on here. I think the first 3 apps
I downloaded on here were Skype, Adium, and RS Games. I couldn't figure
out why RS wasn't working but I found out quickly that I had to put
anything with the app extension into the applications folder in order to
work because it won't run from the dog which is a disk image. Now I'm that
advanced that I have Windows on this thing, (which I kinda hate doing but
have no choice because businesses use Windows and if I could find an app
developer that would make QuintinC's Playroom available for the Mac for
free since the owner of it is too cheap to make it himself,) and Mavericks
is now the third OS version upgrade I installed myself. So yeah, it's not
too hard to master it. Good luck with your learning experience.

Re: Restoring from Time Machine

2014-01-25 Thread Alex Hall
Ray, did you mean restore instead of backup? Once my Mac has a fresh copy of
mavericks on it, I don't want to restore everything. I want my iTunes library,
work files, audio projects, and so on, but I don't want, for instance, my
Applications folder or other system folders. I just had a peek at my Time
Machine backup drive, and I opened my most recent backup. I thought it would
only have changed items since the last backup, but it contains my entire drive,
somehow. I have no clue what magic my Mac is performing behind the scenes, but
somehow this latest backup appears to have all my files, not just changed ones.
So, I guess my question about restoring from the proper date and being sure I
have everything might be moot, if the Mac is able to present all the files for
a given backup, not just the ones it actually had to back up at that point. I
don't know if I'm even making sense anymore.

Re: Smart mailbox

2014-01-25 Thread Alex Hall
It is a way to make a mailbox based on rules, just like a smart folder in
Finder or a smart playlist in iTunes. For instance, you could group all
messages from certain people into a mailbox, or all messages before a given
date that contain certain words in the subject, and so on. It is sort of like
message rules, except instead of taking action on the messages, it simply
groups them into one mailbox. I don't use them because I prefer server-based
rules, but if you use Mail on your Mac a lot and don't care about not having
the same groupings on iOS or other IMAP-enabled programs, they can be very
useful. In fact, iOS may sync them, I'm honestly not sure.

Sorry for posting this here, but thee viphone list seems to have gone away or

Using the facebook app on a 5s running ios7. When I select newsfeeds the first
story may be something like "joe smith commented on on this" The app says to
two-finger double tap to interact with the story. When I try that I only see
the options to like hide etc., bt never am able to see what's being commented
on nor the comments. Also, there doesn't seem to be a way to back out of that
screen.
What am I missing here?

Re: Popup Menus in Numbers

2014-01-25 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI Tim,
Agreed, that is something Apple still needs to work on. Currently, it seems to
tell you that you've landed on a popup menu if no value has been selected (i.e.
it is an empty popup menu). Also, as soon as you've activated the popup menu
and selected a value, VoiceOver announces itself as being on a popup menu and
continues to do so so long as you don't navigate away from the cell. But once
you've selected a value and navigated away from the cell, or if a value was
already selected, it doesn't mention that it's a popup menu.
This seems like something we should pass on to Apple Accessibility, though I
might play a little more to make sure I'm giving them accurate and useful
information.
Cheers,
Nic

Re: Downcast for Mac Changes/Problems (was: unsubscribing from a podcast on the mac using Downcast)

2014-01-25 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI Kawal,

Yes, Downcast had that method of subscribing to podcast feeds when I first got
it and it still has that option for me now--I just tested it. I'm running
Version 1.0.5 (1027). I've always found that method a little confusing, but I
always figure it out eventually.

I'm not having any busy problems with Downcast (I'm subscribed to around 48
podcasts) but I did just have a couple of issues just then. First, when
Downcast first opened--and, keep in mind I haven't used it on my Mac in a
while--it had no windows. However, after leaving it for a while it eventually
acquired some windows. Then there was some issues with the download cue, but I
think this is caused by one particular podcast feed as it's been happening
frequently of late but whenever I get rid of episodes from that one podcast
everything starts working again. I've now set that particular podcast to mark
for streaming instead of download.

Hope you sort out your issue and please let me know if there's anything else I
can do to help.

Best,
Nic

Dear All.

I think I have found out the answer why you can't do anything with the Downcast

Now, Nic, as you had the app first, can you tell me, was there a search box in
the app, where you could type what you wanted and when you pressed enter, a
list of podcasts would come up and you'd stop interacting and vo right to the
add button?

I have killed my app using terminal because when I try and sync my I cloud
preferences so I only use the I phone to sync what I have, the app becomes busy
and it locks up. I had to destroy what was in the downcast containers.

However, if I try and do what I use to do with downcast, there is no search box
and you can't use the file menu to add podcasts or to search for podcasts which
makes me think the app has changed.

I hope Nic you can tell me if the app has changed.

Kawal.

Re: Downcast for Mac Changes/Problems (was: unsubscribing from a podcast on the mac using Downcast)

2014-01-25 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
I will leave Downcast a little more and let's see if the developer put out
another update. If the Developer does, I will try and sync my iCloud
preferences again. Thank you very much Nic for your clarification.

Kawal.

Re: Music videos on I pad

2014-01-25 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

If there is a Download button after the music video, then it is not actually
putting them on the iPad, it's just displaying all your purchases. If the
Download button is not there, then make sure the Sync Music Videos checkbox is
not checked in the Music pane of the iPhone section in iTunes.

 Later...
