Actually, as far as I’m aware, VO-T simply describes the attributes under the

Re: finereader pro for mac.

2013-12-06 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi.

I experience the new finereader as very accessible. If you have a supported
scanner, you can scan directly from a supported scanner without vuescan, this
is a major step forward.

There could be unlabled buttons but the helptags works, but most of the buttons
are labled correct. In my experience it is more accessible and easier to use
than the windows version. My only problem is that my scanner is not supported,
and it is brand new, so I will have to figure something out.

Best regards Annie.

Hi Annie,
Which scanner do you have that is not supported by find reader? I was doing
some looking, and it appears they don't support any of the Plustek scanners. I
also found that there is apparently a driver for the plustek 3800 that works
Onamac, but I guess it is only with plustek software. And based on past
experience, their software is not good. I'm disappointed, because I love book

If you have a plustek optikbook 3800 and the driver works, I think it will work

Hi Terje.

I do not think many of us need vuescan anymore with the new finereader. The old
one only let you scan 1 page at a time, so therefore many people made a tif
file with vuescan, and recognized it with finereader afterwards. I still wonder
how people gets good results that way, I tried it yesterday, and I followed
Annes instructions, and I got a result, I could not use for anything. When I
tried to do the scanning with finereader and everything was perfect.

I have the express for mac version and it is section 508 compliant, as is
the pro version (according the the website). If the pro version is as
accessible as the express version then I assume it is probably highly
 accessible.

Also, there is a $20 discount for upgrading from the express version, and
all ICA scanners are supported. the list of supported scanners is
 exhaustive.
This came out just in time for me as I was considering VueScan as a
 adjunct to the express version.

Ann, could you give us all a more detailed report on the accessibility /
 usability of the pro version?

Re: finereader pro for mac.

2013-12-06 Thread Mary Otten
I found a link on that Abby site but took me to the Apple Store. And there was
an extensive list of supported scanners. Plus tech was not in there. I'm on an
iPhone right now, so I don't have that link. But you can probably find it by
going to the bbyy.com site.

Re: finereader pro for mac.

2013-12-06 Thread Phil Halton
I followed the links to the abbyy website from the app store. on the page for
the pro version of abbyy finer reader, under the tab for "tech specs" in the
hardware section is a link to the apple website for supported ICA scanners.
I think this is it.

see the list on the Apple web-site

Re: finereader pro for mac.

2013-12-06 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Annie,
I do not have an optic book 3800. I have a 3600, which I have been using a long
time with Kurzweil 1000 on Windows. But I would like to move to the Mac if I
can find a scanner I like with this new find reader. I saw a knowledgebase
article on the plus tech website which had a link to a driver that is supposed
to let you use the 3800 on the Mac. But it uses their software. So I'm not sure
if it will work so I don't know if I want to spend the few hundred bucks on a
3800 only to find out it doesn't work. Smile.

Re: finereader pro for mac.

2013-12-06 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Can anybody tell me what the difference is between Finereader Express and
finereader pro? Since I already paid for the Express version before it was in
the app store, I would like to know what added benefits I am getting before I
pay for the Pro version. I don't object to paying something; I just want to
make sure it's worth it since at this point the Express version is working fine
for me.

Macbook Air Help

2013-12-06 Thread Lee Jones
Deer List, got my enhanced voices installed. what is the best way to update
with voice over? When you go to software update on IOS it says you have IOS
7.04 your software is up to date but on the mac it takes you to the ap store.
Do you have to get all your OSX Updates through the ap store? If so its going
to b a pain to find it among all the updates for applications as I am more
bothered about keeping my system software up to date than anything else. I
updated today but needed sighted assistance as it just kept saying system
dialog but vo did not seem to have access to it. I can’t enable my firewall it
says firewall is turned off, but the turn on button is dimmed. Any suggestions
would be gratefully received. Does anyone have any advice regarding an
accessible third party firewall / security software? I know the consensus is
that you don’t need any but call me a windows paranoiac. How do you set a home
page in safari? When focus is on the selected tab going along the bottom of the
screen, how do you get to the information in that tab? On IOS you just move
your finger up the screen.

Many Thanks, Lee

Hi,

Oops, sorry, maybe I said things in a confusing manner.

1. In the Speech pane of VO Utility, in the Voices tab, activate the Default
Voice pop-up.

2. Choose the Customize option.

3. Interact (VO-shift-down arrow) with the table of voices.

4. Navigate through the list pressing VO-space to check the voices you wish to
download. If the voice is already available to you, it will already say “So
and so, Checked”.

5. After you have all the voices you wish checked, stop interacting with the
table (VO-shift-up arrow) then navigate right to the OK button.

6. If you go back to the Default Voice pop-up, activate it, then arrow through
or VO-up or VO-down arrow through. The one that is presently downloading
should say “Downloading” and the ones that are in the Queue will say “Waiting”
after announcing the name.

7. Just leave your computer open and they will download. They might take
quite a while as the voices seem to come from a slower server.

As a matter of interest, I started some downloading at work this afternoon, did
some other things, closed my MBP and came home. I checked on them while
writing this message and they seem to have finished downloading. I now have
them all in my list of available voices from the Default Voices pop-up.

You may also like to note that there is a quick method of changing the voice on
the fly. Press VO-cmd-left or right arrow. As you go left or right, you’ll
hear “Intonation, Rate, Pitch, Volume and Voice” from which you can hold the
same keys down then use the up and down arrows to change things.

Later…

Side-note: I noticed that when I chose a few of these new voices, they played
for the demo but did not actually work properly for other tasks. I’ll have to
dig a little deeper to see what’s going on. Maybe it had something to do with
stopping and starting of the download process, or maybe I just need to restart
my beast.

Hi Lee,

It appears that Software Update no longer pops up when downloading voices. If
you press VO-space (VO means ctrl-optio) on the Default Voice pop-up then arrow
down through the list, after Customize, VO will read more voices and will say
“So and so Downloading” if a voice is being downloaded at that time. I believe
that it only downloads one voice at a time and will continue downloading voices
even when the VO Utility is not open. Once the voice has completed
downloading, you are able to choose it as your default.

When you choose Customize and navigate through the table of additional voices,
you can press VO-space to check as many voices as you wish to add to your
system. Once you’ve got all the voices checked that you want, stop interacting
with the table and navi

Re: Abby Finereder and VuScan

2013-12-06 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I did troubleshooting with somebody using vuescan a few weeks ago. The problem
was that media was not in "text". I suspect you do have a setting wrong
somewhere if you are not getting good results when you scan with vuescan but
you are with Abbyy; there are several incorrect settings that could cause a
problem and sometimes it is hard to track the problem down. It is also possible
that there is something unique about your scanner that keeps it from working
with vuescan but I kind of doubt it since it works with Abbyy. Whether people
use vuescan or Abbyy for scanning does not make any difference to me; it's
great that Abbyy now allows multi-page scanning if that is the case. I simply
would like to avoid having a thread that indicates to people searching the
archives that vuescan does poor scans. I have done all my mail and many long,
complete books with vuescan and then did the ocr with Abbyy and the results
were usually excellent. It was not practical to do that with Abbyy Express
because multipage scanning wasn't possible. I do not personally find vuescan's
ocr useful but the scanning has worked well for me. This is not at all to
contradict anybody else's experience but simply to encourage anybody who wants
to use vuescan for whatever reason that it can work very well.

Facebook Site; Finding Comments on a story?

2013-12-06 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

I’ve noticed recently that the regular Facebook site doesn’t show comments on
the newsfeed. I get email notifications of them, but don’t find them on my
wall. Is there something to click on to expand the comments with the story?

Thanks,

Re: Popup Menus in Numbers

2013-12-06 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
This is one of the things I mentioned earlier. It used to be that if you
pressed command option i it would imply say Inspector and you could do
formatting that way. I've been told it comes up, but VoiceOver does not say it
and I haven't yet figured out how to get to the Inspector anymore. Somebody on
this list said they got to formatting another way, but I'm not sure if that
covers everything that is in the Inspector.

Ok Tim. If the Inspector doesn't work the same way, how do you do it? It's
confusing because VoiceOver, if I remember right, says Hide Inspector or Show
Inspector when you press command option i.

Re: Renaming a table in the new Numbers using Mavericks

2013-12-06 Thread Nicholas Parsons
The inspector is visible by default. In fact, I'm not sure if it can be hidden.
There is an option to hide/show Inspector in View > Inspector,
command-option-i, but this doesn't seem to have any effect for VoiceOver at
least. You can, however, choose to toggle between the format inspector or the
filter inspector. This option is in the toolbar as well as in View > Inspector.
The inspector is called Format Group whichever inspector it is, but its
contents changes.

I know to change the name of a table one needs to select the table radio button
in the format inspector, check the table name checkbox, and then click the name
of the table which appears above the table. However, I can't seem to find or
navigate to the table name with VoiceOver.

Re: Popup Menus in Numbers

2013-12-06 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI Gigi,
I can get to the format inspector fine and I have no problems formatting a cell
as a popup menu. What I'm having difficulty with is activating the popup menu
and setting it to a particular value. If I VO-Space on the popup menu it simply
allows me to edit the text. Option-return seems not to do anything. If you come
across anything that might help I'd be very interested and appreciative.

Mars Edit Got Me Blacklisted

2013-12-06 Thread Mike M
Hey fellow Mars Edit Users,
When I got a little free time a few hours ago I opened Mars Edit to
make a change to one of my pages at malarsie.com. When I finished the changes I
hit send and got an alert saying my password was wrong for some odd reason. I
typed it in and hit send. It didn’t work. Twice. When I went to my site on the
browser I got an alert saying that my IP address had been blacklisted and that
I need to contact my service provider if I thought it was a mistake.
After some googling I called my hosting provider and after a few
questions and some digging they asked how I manage my site to which the answer
is Mars Edit for the most part.
Turns out that for some reason or another Mars Edit had made a series
of calls to the server. Like hundreds in just a minute or two.
My hosting provider took this as malicious action and blocked me.
They fixed it without any problems but I wanted to find out if anyone
else had experienced or heard of anything like this before.
Hope you all have a good day!

Any recommendations?

Their budgeting software is an accessible, at least it was the last time I

Re: Where To find Address for a Bluetooh Device?

2013-12-06 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I know this because I needed it to use brltty on my Mac with bluetooth for my
braille edge. Correction: I knew how to find bluetooth addresses on Mountain
Lion, and this might just be the last straw if I can't find them with
Mavericks! In Mountain Lion, I opened System Preferences > Bluetooth and there
was a table of devices and I could press the "more info" button and get the
address. I just looked for this in Mavericks and didn't find "more info". I can
bring up a context menu with rename and remove and disconnect if it's
connected; but I now see no more more info button. Maybe it's there somewhere
and I just haven't figured it out yet.

Re: Abby Finereder and VuScan

Hi Cheryl.

I have followed Annes guidelines for setting vuescan up. I am happy that
vuescan works for anybody else, but I am sad that it does not work for me. I
have checked the text setting and a lot of other things, nothing works.

Best regards Annie.

Re: VMWare questions

2013-12-06 Thread Kimberly thurman
I had Fusion running Windows 7 on my MBP under Snow Leopard perfectly. I was
running Fusion 4. I got a new MBA and installed Fusion 6. I moved my Virtual
Machine file from the MBP to the MBA, which I’ve heard can be done. When I
launch Fusion, iI get no Windows start up music, but I think something is going
on, because I hear a notification from Jaws and one from Free Download Manager,
which I was running in windows.

I haven’t used Fusion with Windows on the Mac for a while, so I forget which
view I should choose? Does unity have anything to do with it? Could someone
give me an idea about this?

Thanks in advance for all advice!

 Hi alex,
I'm going to take a crack at some of your questions.

For your problem with vo taking over, and also for some of the key strokes
not being recognized, you can either turn off vo while in the virtual
machine or go into the vm prefs and then find the tab called keyboard, I
think. In there, there is a check box which tells the vm to ignore all mac
osx commands. For myself, once I checked that little box, the guest
 operating system acted better!

The volume issue is probably windows volume and you can either turn up your
mac or go into control panel and turn up the volume in the other OS.

You will have to disable global Mac keystrokes in the machine settings, command

Fusion and load vO in order to suspend the virtual machine if you need to.

Re: Where To find Address for a Bluetooth Device?

2013-12-06 Thread Teresa Cochran
Well, I haven’t found out much about how to use command line to scan for and
display bluetooth Mac addresses. Most Linux distros use hcitool, but Free bsD
uses hccontrol, which I haven’t even found man page info on yet. I did get the
braille display working, because I found the address via hcitool in Vinux,
which is based on Ubuntu. However, it might be nice to find out how to display
this info in a Mac Mavericks terminal.

file conversion question

2013-12-06 Thread Caitlyn and Maggie
Hi,
I had what I thought was an insight about how to handle a bunch of movies I
have.
I want to add some movies to my i tunes library. right now, they are mp3
files. they are described movies, though. I don’t want them playing with all
my other music.

If I just rename them to m4r, and then put them into the automatically add to
itunes folder, will this then stick them into the movies section of iTunes,
thus putting them into the movies section?

or, will I have to actually convert them with some app? If I have to actually
convert them, what app will do this?

thanks!

focusing in Windows using Fusion?

2013-12-06 Thread Alex Hall
Hello list,
How do you set focus to windows when using Fusion? So far, the only method I
have found that works reliably is to physically click the mouse, hoping that my
mouse pointer is focused somewhere inside of the Windows window. Is there a
trick I'm missing? Control-command and coomand-g both fail to set focus on
Windows, but control-command does let me switch back to the Mac. Any help is
appreciated. Thanks.

Re: VMWare questions

2013-12-06 Thread Phil Halton
unity view won't affect anything. However, moving the VM from one machine to
another can be tricky. when I moved my VM from my iMac to my MBA, I was asked
by fusion if I wanted to copy or move the VM. Not knowing what to do, I
selected copy. This caused all my keys to be invalidated - windows, MS-office
and jaws all had to be re-authorized. I think if I had chosen "move", then
fusion would have moved the authorizations along with the vm file,
de-activating the old one and activating the new, but as it was, I basically
created a clone of the VM, so now I have to windows for the price of one.

P.S. I had to call windows support (accessibility team) for help and they
authorized the new windows7 VM even though I didn't pay for another license .

I don't think that answers your question though. Sorry I can't be more help The
first thing you need to do I think is to get jaws talking so you can know whats
going on. Try narrator while you're at it. and, if fusion asks if this is a new
file, and you want to copy or move it, try the move option.

Re: anyone having trouble with column view in mavericks.

2013-12-06 Thread Teresa Cochran
It’s a bug. The only easy solution is to switch to list view. I’ve actually
gotten used to list view. If i want to locate myself inside a folder, I just
use command-down-arrow to open it and command-up-arrow to go back up to the
parent folder. Hopefully this will be fixed soon, as there’s been a lot of
discussion and posting to Apple accessibility about it.

Re: focusing in Windows using Fusion?

2013-12-06 Thread Phil Halton
I usually run in full-screen mode and when I command tab into fusion, I use the
tab key or jaws "read current line" command to get windows awake and
responding. sometimes focus gets screwed up and in those cases I use command
control F to switch screen modes which usually shakes things up and lets me get
into windows. when not in full-screen mode, I make sure I'm not in the fusion
toolbar, and then tab until windows receives focus. The whole thing is kind of
flakey, but I always get windows focused - there's no trick that I know of
aside from these.

Re: finereader pro for mac.

You know, Epson scanners are supported and work quite well in my opinion. Also,
you can pick one up for around $120 or so. There are many other supported and
cheap scanners that will do a good job. Basically any scanner that apple sells
will work for you.

I experience the new finereader as very accessible. If you have a
supported scanner, you can scan directly from a supported scanner without
vuescan, this is a major step forward.

There could be unlabled buttons but the helptags works, but most of the
buttons are labled correct. In my experience it is more accessible and
easier to use than the windows version. My only problem is that my scanner
is not supported, and it is brand new, so I will have to figure something
 out.

Re: finereader pro for mac.

2013-12-06 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Phil,
Yes, I know that a lot of scanners are supported. But when I scan a book on a
flat-bed the old-fashioned way, i.e. pressing the book down so as to get a good
view of both pages, I pay for it with all kinds of muscle pain in the shoulders
and arms. Too much typing for too many years and too much scanning of books in
precisely that manner, I suppose. That's why I'm bummed about the book edge
models being so poorly supported on Mac.

Re: file conversion question

2013-12-06 Thread Brett C.
You can leave the files in their current format if you want to. You can place
them in a playlist, or not. Simply select your DVS tracks and then select get
info. In the options tab you can check a box that says skip when shuffling. You
can also choose to check the box to remember your place if you stop the track,
otherwise you’ll be taken back to the start of the movie. I hope this makes
sense.

xcode mavericks and busy

2013-12-06 Thread Nick Allan
Hi all

Is anyone else having problems in xcode 5 with mavericks, where when
navigating through either the inspector or library groups constantly
produces the busy indicator and forces you to wait a second or two. I've
gone to the extent of wiping the hdd and reinstalling everything to resolve
this, but after a fresh install of everything, the same problem is back.
I'm thinking I'm going to need to revert to ml. Anyone else got any other
suggestions?

Regards Nick

hi.
I am adding up to Nick's problem. Xcode quits when I try to expand
elements in the document outline view of a storyboard file in
interface builder. The same happens when I try to go to the inspector
section for some UI objects, A TableViewController in my case.
Any suggestions and workarounds would be of great help.

Re: xcode mavericks and busy

2013-12-06 Thread Barry Hadder
Hi Nick,

I have had this same problem from the first beta release. I’ve submitted a bug
report back in the summer and updated my findings, but have not gotten any
response. Feel free to file a duplicate.

As far as I can tell, the problem is with the movement of the keyboard focus
around the project window whenever an xib is selected. Oddly enough, it doesn’t
seem to happen when the main menu xib is selected, or f the project is an
automater action.

The work around I’ve used is to set up a vo activity where keyboard focus does
not follow vo.
Hope that is at least some what helpful. I personally have been very
frustrated with Apple over this.

Hi all
Is anyone else having problems in xcode 5 with mavericks, where when navigating
through either the inspector or library groups constantly produces the busy
indicator and forces you to wait a second or two. I’ve gone to the extent of
wiping the hdd and reinstalling everything to resolve this, but after a fresh
install of everything, the same problem is back. I’m thinking I’m going to
need to revert to ml. Anyone else got any other suggestions?

Regards Nick

do any of you use DLNA software to stream content from your Macs to your home TV or stereo?

2013-12-06 Thread Kevin Gibbs
guys,

Here's the deal. I have a Sony Blue Ray player, I don't recall the model, and
it came with software called Eye Connect. that's e y e connect. anyway, the
folks who make that will stop supporting it at the end of this year. Frankly,
I haven't gotten any real support. the curious thing is that Not all of my
iTunes library shows up on my Tv as being available. In some cases, if I click
on a given song, a message comes up saying "there is no playable file." In
other cases, the artist and album are simply not on the list on the TV screen.
It's as if the library shown on the TV is a random subset of the iTunes library
I actually have. I don't know how to make sure that all the content on my
computer is available to this eye Connect software. So, I'd like to get a new
DLNA package. But I don't know what to choose. do any of you have any
experience with or recommendations for me?

Also, since I show up on this list so infrequently, could you please copy me at
this e-mail address, kevj...@gmail.com? I won't receive your replies unless
you do that.

thanks in advance for any help.

Best,
Kevin

moving between 2 documents in pages?

2013-12-06 Thread Andrew Head
Hi all,
Just wondering what is the keystroke for moving between 2 open documents in
pages? when I command tab to the pages app, I see the last document I had open,
but I have two documents. How can I view the other doc and move back and forth
between the 2?
Kind regards,
Andrew

Re: do any of you use DLNA software to stream content from your Macs to your home TV or stereo?

2013-12-06 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Sorry for the dual reply. I just realized that one of the requirements I have
for a DLNA server is that it must stream DRM content I've purchased from
iTunes.

Again, thanks for any ideas.

Best,
Kevin

Re: Budgeting Software

2013-12-06 Thread Nicholas Parsons
The best thing I've found is the Personal Budget template in the new Numbers.
It works really well, is very accessible on both Mac and iPad and of course
syncs seamlessly between devices with iCloud.

Another app for the iPhone is TrackMySpend (though I can't remember if it's one
word or three). It's fully accessible, though isn't the most pleasant to use or
fully featured.

I've also tried Home Budget Light from the Mac App Store. The main problem with
this is basically all the buttons are unlabelled. Given this, I've never learnt
to use it. However, if a sighted person was able to help you label the buttons
I think there's a good chance you'll be able to use it well. It's free.

If you learn of anything that you like, please let this list know as I'd be
very interested.

Cheers,
Nic
