Sorta off-topic, but maybe not: Station playlist studio in a virtual machine
Hello there, Does anyone have experience using Station Playlist Studio for broadcasting using a virtual machine? The reason why i ask is that when i try using it, the sound can be choppy and worse, i get about a 1 second delay between me speaking and the sound coming back using a wireless Plantronics headset. Can i at all decrease the latency or do i have to use a Bootcamp partition to avoid this problem? How do you who broadcast from a virtual machine with Station Playlist studio do this? Thankful for any tips. /Krister -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Need app to diagnose Macbook hardwares health
Hi all I'm looking for a app or other way to diagnose the health of a Macbook. It's a mid 2009 Macbook white 2.1 GHz dual core, 2 GB memmory and 160 GB hard drive. It's currently running 10.8 ML but I'm busy updating it to 10.8.3. Thing is I don't really know the history of this machine, my cousin baught it from someone and now I have the option to buy it from him but don't want to waist my money on something which will die in a month or 2. From what I have seen so far, the battery is still pritty decent but don't know how to test the other hardware. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Browsing trash and moving files (was Frustrating Problem with Quicknav)
To find a file in the trash, open it from your dock, or browse to ~/.trash in Finder. From there, it is a matter of copying or moving the file back to where you want (vo-shift-m might reveal a "restore" option, I didn't look). To move files, hit cmd-c to copy them like normal. When pasting, though, use option-cmd-v to move the file, instead of just cmd-v, which copies. On Jun 4, 2013, at 7:31 AM, Rebecca Sabo wrote: > Hi all, > I do not have that problem. Re: After shocks blue tooth headset.
Hi guys What are you always wanted is a little speaker, preferably blue tooth, that can set up on your shoulder and speak out GPS information. I bought one that I was hoping would do that, but unfortunately it turned out only to work when the phone was acting for the phone call. Does anybody know about a device that would do it when the phone is not active? I know what non-Bluetooth device would do it, but I'm talking about a Bluetooth one. Re: After shocks blue tooth headset.
I don't have specific models, but this might help. As you search for a speaker, just make sure it supports A2DP, as that will let VO, music, sounds, and everything work properly. Hi, Check out this link: http://osxdaily.com/2012/03/04/mac-maintenance-tips/ For the most part, the only things you can really test are the battery and the HD. The battery can be checked in your System Prefs in the Energy Saver pane and the be HD can be checked in Disk Utility. Other than these two items, if something is going to crash, then it probably will just do it without any real warning. These laptops are generally quite reliable so it's kind of your call. HTH. Re: Audio highjack pro and recording.
Hi, The scripts can be found at www.appletothecore.info. Its under the Apple To The Core Episode 6 heading. Importing and exporting is pretty straight forward. Copy the two files or, how many ever files you have, open garageband and create a new project, press enter to make sure your at the beginning of your timeline, and paste with command V. Thats it. your files have been imported into garageband. To export, go to the share menu, and select export song to disk. Select where you would like to export the file, a long with the file type and quality you prefer. hth Ricardo Walker rica...@appletothecore.info Twitter:@apple2thecore www.appletothecore.info On Jun 3, 2013, at 5:27 PM, Matt Dierckens wrote: > Hi Recardo. > Would you be able to 1. provide this script and 2. demonstrate how to > import/export these two files? OCR: what does Abbyy offer that Prizmo does not?
Hi all, Regarding OCR, what is good about Abby Fine Reader? I was just talking to someone on Twitter who strongly recommends Prizmo over all other OCR apps for the mac. Docuscan can't handle JPG files or process multiple pages as one file, and its OCR is cloud-based. What about Abby though? Why would someone use that over Prizmo? I have no stake in any of these apps, so I'm not trying to put any of them down, I just want to hear from you Abbyy users why you use that app over Prizmo or some other solution. Thanks! Re: Need app to diagnose Macbook hardwares health
Thanks a lot for this info. I know I'm stretching the limits with Mountain lion but read that it can take it so thought what the heck and installed it, if I have any problems I will go back to Lion. I inicially struggled quite a lot when I formatted the hard drive to install a fresh OS. During the fresh install the process freezed up a few times and I had to start everything all over again, this is where I thought there must be something wrong someware with the hardware. I first tried 10.8 a few times and also thought this caused the freez up, then tried 10.7 but it also kept freezing, then finally yesterday I somehow got 10.8 to completely install On Jun 4, 5:47 pm, Ricardo Walker wrote: > Hi, > > I would just like to point out, that Macbook is really bumping up on the > minimum hardware specs needed to run Mountain Lion stably. I am also curious to hear more about Abby and Prizmo if anyone has used both of them. I have a cancan and have been using the software that comes with it to scan into PDF's and reading in preview. Do Prizmo and ABBY scan better as sometimes my scans come out only partially which can be a pain when there is a phone number or account number you need. Thanks for letting us know. Hi Alex Well, one obvious advantage is that a BBY why is not cloud-based. Having a cloud based app is cool as long as you have a connection to the cloud. But Abbyy gives you the option to scan even if you don't. Best, Donna Sent from my iPhone On Jun 4, 2013, at 10:46 AM, Alex Hall wrote: > Hi all, > Regarding OCR, what is good about Abby Fine Reader? Re: Need app to diagnose Macbook hardwares health
Had an error when I last sent this so trying again. CB That's a bit difficult as any testing stuff can only tell you if things are working right now, which gives you no indication whether things will keep working. Generally, if you get past the first 90 days with no failures you should be good to go for years. For me the most common failure then becomes the hard drive. You'll probably want to replaces that in the not too distant future as 160GB doesn't go as far as it used to. Another wall you might run into is memory upgrades. 2GB is kind of minimal these days and you should be able to bump up to 4GB, possibly 6 depending on which model you have. Many folks have reported VO busy and other sluggish behavior going away with more RAM. One downside of buying something that's a getting up there in years is every so often Apple cuts off a swath of machines to OSX upgrades. My wife's Macbook 13" from May 2007 just missed the cutoff last time and is now stuck at OSX 10.7 until it dies. So your laptop, with a few years under it's belt, will probably be in the next cutoff group, whenever that happens. Notes app & Calendar events
Hi all, A couple weeks ago, I mentioned I've been using the notes app as a food journal. This has been working out great because it seamlessly syncs between mac & iDevices. Now, I'm wondering if there is a way to import the note enteries into iCal. I've created a new iCloud calendar for food tracking, is there any clever way to send all that info over to the calendar? Inside my notes app, I have a folder for the journal, then each note at the top has the date. Any automator ideas or apple scripts? I have the utility launch bar, but so far I haven't figured out a way to send the information over to the calendar. Re: Notes app & Calendar events
It might be possible - I know Calendar and Notes are both scriptable. Have a look in their respective script definition files for the exact notation, but I imagine your basic script would be structured like this: set noteToImport to all notes in food folder of notes app repeat with currentNote in notesToImport tell Calendar to make new event with date (line 1 of current note) and notes (lines 2 through -1 of currentNote) end repeat That's not code, it's just an outline, but see what those definition files tell you and maybe you can hack one together from there. Let me know if you have questions; I'm still learning Applescript myself, but am getting rather good at it. Re: OCR: what does Abbyy offer that Prizmo does not?
I don't know if Prizmo on Mac uses cloud-based OCR or not. I know the iPhone app does, but I think the full Mac app is local. I could be wrong, and I could find nothing online to confirm one way or the other. So you're saying Prizmo is cloud-based for OCR? That's a bit of a disappointment. Re: OCR: what does Abbyy offer that Prizmo does not?
I have both on my computer. The only thing that causes me trouble, and this just may be me, and I haven't figured out a solution yet, is that when I scanned in something with ViewScan, I don't get immediate feedback. That is, I have to go to Abby Fine reader, call up the file, and see how my skin came out. I can see that if you were doing a book, if one of the pages was wrong or miscarriage and, I might have a problem telling if I had a good scanner not until I called up the main file. Now in my i phone I have a calendar alert set so it should go off just before a calendar event is to take place. However, the alert sound is not sounding. Something in the settings to fix I presume? Apple TV and Speakers Question
Hey all, Can anyone suggest a good pair of speakers to go with Apple TV that won't break the bank. I am looking to get Apple TV primarily to connect to my mac and iPhone and want to be able to play music, podcasts, and Blind Mice movies over it. Not sure if I even need the Apple TV, as I am looking to put a pair of speakers in the bedroom, so is there a pair that can connect to my computer through bluetooth or over my home network, and can Apple TV work without aTV. I have read that netflix won't play content without a tv, and am thinking about trying it without a tv, or maybe adding the cheapest TV I can find since I can't see the picture. Re: next question, calendar alert i phone
Another place, other than settings/sounds, to look for a Wait to change calendar notifications would be in settings/notifications. Also, checking the notification Center is south to see what style of alerts are being displayed. Re: After shocks blue tooth headset.
Hello, A2DP. It stands for advanced audio distribution profile. In a nut shell, its the protocol that allows stereo audio to be streamed via bluetooth. You can't hear things like Voiceover or turn by turn spoken navigation without this. At least, without also being on a phone call. hth Ricardo Walker rica...@appletothecore.info Twitter:@apple2thecore www.appletothecore.info On Jun 4, 2013, at 1:34 PM, Eugenia Firth wrote: > Ricardo, pardon my ignorance here, but what is a 2-D that you mentioned? > > Sent from my iPhone > > On Jun 4, 2013, at 10:44 AM, Ricardo Walker wrote: > >> You would have to make sure the device supports A2DP. >> >> hth >> >> Ricardo Walker >> rica...@appletothecore.info >> Twitter:@apple2thecore >> www.appletothecore.info >> >> On Jun 4, 2013, at 9:48 AM, Eugenia Firth wrote: >> >>> Hi guys >>> What are you always wanted is a little speaker, preferably blue tooth, that >>> can set up on your shoulder and speak out GPS information. Re: Sorta off-topic, but maybe not: Station playlist studio in a virtual machine
Hi Krister, yes I'm doing this usually more than weekly on Mushroom FM. Audio isn't the best with Fusion, but it works OK with my Edirol UA1-EX as my studio sound card connected to my mixer and a cheap USB sound card for JAWS. I sometimes find that this second sound card will cut out, and I have to go into the virtual machine menu and disconnect and reconnect. I'm using a mixer, but if you are not, the configuration is actually far simpler. Remember that in this case, all the audio you play is going through Studio's audio pipeline, so listeners aren't affected. In terms of hearing yourself echoing back, this is an issue with the default configuration of Studio no matter which computer or configuration you use, although I agree, latency is a bit more pronounced in Fusion. My recommendation is that you simply switch off hearing yourself coming back in the headset. Even on a fast system there is still latency, and while some people have become used to it, I find it slows down my speech and is distracting. Go to Studio's options and set your monitor device to the headset, then configure toggle monitor to on under microphone input. If you really do like to hear yourself echoing back, then there's no doubt Bootcamp would reduce the latency. I read a very interesting article by Brian Smart who described how to reduce audio latency in Fusion, but when I followed his steps, I broke things majorly. Thank goodness for snapshots. I will be doing a series of webinars on topics like this soon. Re: OCR: what does Abbyy offer that Prizmo does not?
Good Day: I am talking about Prismo. Admittedly, as I have stated before, I didn't do too much with it, and I only used the Mac app, but when I, for instance, tried to recognize a scanned PDF of a book with the two solutions, Abby Fine Reader gave a better result. I am considering trying the iPhone version of Prismo, but that is my opinion at present. HTH: Henry Education never ends. It is a series of lessons, with the greatest for the last. 10.8.4 is here
Hi all, I just read that 10.8.4 dropped today. The feature list still includes the Voiceover improvements to text in pdf documents we talked about a few days ago, so go get the update and see if pdfs really do read better. I'm about to update; hopefully they tossed a few other fixes for vo into the mix. Re: 10.8.4 is here
Be ware of updating. My experience with the preview was that vo wouldn't read pdfs when Preview was in single page mode. I haven't seen any indication that it has been fixed. When I can, I want to install the latest OSX on the test partition I'm using, but for some reason the update isn't showing up in the updates list. Re: 10.8.4 is here
Well, I don't know what is going on. When running my production partition, I have both the preview 10.8.4 and the update 10.8.4 in the updates list. There is weirdness hear, so I'm not doing anything at the moment. Especially not until I can test it first. On Jun 4, 2013, at 4:57 PM, Barry Hadder wrote: Be ware of updating. Re: 10.8.4 is here
Well, I can confirm the single page mode problem. In single page mode, PDFs don't seem to be seen with VoiceOver. However, in continuous mode, it's fine. It seems that navigation is improved. When you use the, go to page, command, it actually moves you. Also, if you reopen Preview after you had been on a specific page, it seems to remember your location when you open it again. I don't notice anything in text edit or pages yet. Take Care John D. Okay, Just had a major system crash and had to reinstall my OS. How do I move all my signatures from "all" to my account table? Drag and drop does not work. aligning text in Text Edit?
Hi all, I'm writing a template to use for client reports, and I'm using Text Edit. I also have iText Express, but I have not yet tried that. The problem is that, after I center my title, I can't seem to un-center anything else. That is, even after I hit cmd-left brace and vo says "align left checked", hitting vo-t on text that should not be centered reports it as centered. It seems as though the whole file is stuck in this "align center" mode and I can't work out how to un-center parts of it. Any ideas? Thanks. Re: aligning text in Text Edit?
Yes, I think I have an idea here. Whenever I want to change centering, italics, bold, etc., I put a space after the text I am emphasizing. I'm not sure this is necessary, but I select that space and put it back into plain mode or whatever the next thing is I want to be in. I had this trouble with MS Word as well, and ever since I started doing this, I have not had trouble changing my text. Re: 10.8.4 is here
You know in Windows, pdf files, as far as I know, have to be accessible by the author. This is why IRS has two versions on their website, one that is for everybody else, and one under accessibility for us. This might be the factor. I haven't done it yet, but maybe you could go to the IRS web site and get both types of forms and see what happens. Re: calendar alerts
Hi jean, In Settings, Notifications, it should have a list of apps that are assigned to the Notification Centre as well as a group of those that are not. Calendar should automatically be part of the group that are within the Notification Centre. It will list beside it what it is set to, as in your case, it reads Banners and Badges. You also want Alerts which is where the sounds come in. Double-tap on the Calendar item within the Notification Centre area and you'll get more options. Just after the Alert Style Heading, VO should announce what the current Alert Style is. Swipe up or down on this item to change its state, choose Alerts. The other options are configurable as you move through the various settings. Once Alerts is set, there should be an option further down that allows you to choose the Alert sound you wish to attach to the Calendar app. HTH. Later... Ah, much thanks. Now, how to get Mail to tell me when a message is read or unread? I believe I've turned off the preview pain, but, that only seems to prevent a message from reading automatically. Re: how to move signatures from all to actual account
Actually, that didn't work either. I tried by interacting with the table, then, selecting all three signatures and then, using VO+cmd+space to pick up the items. Then, I navigated to the actuall account table but could not drop the signatures in. On Jun 4, 2013, at 9:47 PM, Ray Foret jr wrote: > Ah, much thanks. Re: a program that allows me to create new folders on the iphone and Ipad
I'm sorry. I meant to say "File Browser" and for me I found it at the top of the list of results. Be sure and check both iPhone or iPad. I don't remember if you have an iPhone or iPad. If iPhone, then search should be easy enough. Again, try File Browser. That is what what I'm using. Re: Sorta off-topic, but maybe not: Station playlist studio in a virtual machine
Hi Krister, Are you, by any chance, using Windows XP in your virtual machine? I ask because the Soundblaster PCI card that Fusion uses for audio under XP has a 1 second recording buffer, which might explain why you're having such high latency. I had this problem when trying to test GWConnect under a virtual machine running XP. If you don't want to change the guest operating system just to get the driver that is used for Vista and later, you can always edit your virtual machine's configuration (.vmx) file to used the HD audio driver instead. Can i at all decrease the latency or do i have to use a Bootcamp partition to avoid this problem? How do you who broadcast from a virtual machine with Station Playlist studio do this?
