Re: Dragging and Dropping a mailbox to Favorites
I've never had an "I hate Mac day" myself. When it says something is hidden, I think it usually means there's some other window or application blocking that item on the screen. Using VoiceOver it is of course very difficult to get an idea of what this might be. So what usually works for me is just closing that window or application and opening it again. Also try closing any other windows you might have open. Use the windows chooser (VO-F2 twice quickly) to see if there are any other windows or notifications open. Try quitting all other applications before you try dragging and dropping again. The commands you're using should work. VO-COMMA and VO-PERIOD in full screen mode nearly always works for me. Best of luck. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. date & time in icloud
Hi list, I hope someone can either help me or tell me I am nuts. I have a friend who is trying to set time zone & location settings in icloud. He is not much of a cloud person, however he set it up in order to use the find my iphone feature & find my mac. I can't find anything in icloud preferences that relates to date & time, though he said it was there. I looked in system preferences & checked out sharing. Can anyone please tell me how to help him straighten out his time zone & location using voiceover? Currently, it is set to pacific & cupertino. He lives in Florida. Re: date & time in icloud
Hi, I'm thinking that he may just be a little confused. I've never noticed anything of the sort within the iCloud pane of System Prefs nor do I remember anything like that in previous versions of the pane. Normally, when you enable the Find My Mac component of iCloud, it will ask you if you will allow the Location Service to keep track of your Mac and you should click the "Allow" button. By default, many Macs upon initial setup are set to the Pacific Time Zone so it is a good idea to go within the Date & Time pane of System Prefs, under the Time Zone tab and enter a major city close to you within your specific Time Zone. The Mac will automatically adjust your time and Time Zone info when the new city is entered. Later... Re: Deleting photos from the camera roll on iPhone 5 once they have been transferred to an album.
Hi, The Camera Roll is where the master copy of your photo is kept, similar to the Music Library in iTunes. Each album simply has a reference to the original/master photo as in iTunes, songs within a playlist are simply references to the master copy in the main Library. So, in fact, you are not actually copying the photo to another album, you are just making an alias to that photo in another location. This is why iPhones and Macs don't use up huge amounts of space duplicating photos/music within your given Library. So, essentially, you can remove a photo from a specific album without it affecting anything else but when you remove the photo from the Camera Roll, you are removing the actual photo from the device which will remove it from everywhere. HTH. Later... Tim Kilburn Fort McMurray, AB Canada On 2013-05-23, at 10:24 PM, Mark BurningHawk Baxter wrote: > I have separated my camera roll pictures into albums, for posting on > Facebook. Assisting an App developer with accessibility issues
Hi, I have encountered an app that, I believe, would be very useful to blind iPhone and iPad users who work in multilingual environments. When I notified the app developer that the buttons in his app weren't accessibly labelled, he said: " I'm very sorry to hear that the buttons are not labeled in a way that works with VoiceOver. This may be due to the programming environment I use (called Appcelerator Titanium). I'll investigate that!" Will he be able to rectify this situation within the constraints of his programming environment and if so, what should he do? I myself am not a programmer, but I will pass along any useful information to him. Re: type2phone how to leave search field on ios
You can try a shortcut for quicknav, and/or flicking left and right (I don't remember if that is in the menus). The iPhone turns quicknav off as soon as you enter a text field to edit it, so you'll need a way to force it back on. You said you already have shortcuts for other functions, so I assume you are familiar with how to do this. Re: Dragging and Dropping a mailbox to Favorites
Hey Nicholas, You must be one of the very few lucky ones to never have had an I hate my mac day. I tried exactly what you suggested, even quit every application closed everything and restarted my mac, then opened mail first after a restart, and still got the message VO cannot drag the item as the item might be hidden. I then did everything the old fashioned way called someone who could see and had them come over. They confirmed that nothing was blocking the mailbox I was trying to move, and I was still getting the same message. I had them drag and drop the mailbox using the mouse, and they were able to do it in 2 seconds, so yes, this is obviously a bug with Voiceover which leads to having a I hate my mac day, as I hate not being able to do something so simple that should take me two seconds. Re: VIP Hell in Mail
A quick search gave me this: Adding people to the VIP list in this manner will create a property list file called "VIPSenders.plist" in the username/Library/V2/MailData/ folder if it does not already exist... You could try deleting that file. I can't promise nothing will break, but at least move it out of the folder and/or rename it. You should also open it and look through it manually to be sure there is nothing important in there. Re: VIP Hell in Mail
Open Finder, hit cmd-shift-g, and type this: ~/library That will open up the library folder in the current user's directory. Incidentally, the same holds for the global library folder, but you'd just type /library instead (the tilde symbol means "home"). Re: Dragging and Dropping a mailbox to Favorites
Hi Brian, It isn't easy, but adding mailboxes to the favorites bar is doable with VoiceOver. You must be sure the favorites bar is showing first off, and then, be sure you mark the mailbox for drag and drop and then navigate to the favorites bar itself to drop the mailbox. I don't think you need to interact with the favorites bar though to drop the mailbox. Take Care John D. Re: Dragging and Dropping a mailbox to Favorites
Hey John, Yes, I did exactly what you said to do, and yes, the favorites bar was showing, spent hours on this trying everything VO comma, and the old way VO shift space bar, and couldn't get anything to work. Finally, I gave up and had a sighted person come over and do it in 2 seconds. These are the frustrating things with VO, and would be nice if Apple would address. As far as I believe, there hasn't been one single improvement to VO since Mountain Lion rolled out, and I can only get the same answer from Apple accessibility so many times on several issues. We are aware of the problem, but can't say when it will be fixed. Something so simple as them reversing the web spots so when you click VO command right bracket takes you right instead of left, would have been nice. If they can't fix that which to me seems something very basic to fix, and worked correctly in Lion, I don't put a lot of stock in any VO improvements until the next operating system comes out. I get that only a very small percentage of people use VO, and that Apple cannot commit a great number of resources to it, but just be honest, instead of treating us like idiots waiting for a fix. Don't get me wrong I do appreciate Apple's commitment to accessibility, it's the leading us to think there will be improvements that annoys me. Expanding & collapsing mailboxes in Mountain Lion
Hello All, I'm pulling my hair out here because I've done something to my configuration so that I can't see all my mailboxes at level 2. They are imap boxes and I can only see the inboxes, trash and sent boxes. But a structure of folders and mailboxes for storing is still on the server and accessible as I can move messages to them but I can't traverse them. In order to read messages in those folders at level 2. I can access them on another machine, it's something I've done on this MP. Anyone got any ideas of what I need to do to reveal all my filed messages? Many thanks for your attention and suggestions. Re: Expanding & collapsing mailboxes in Mountain Lion
Hey, I think I did the same thing recently. If you are looking to expand and collapse mailboxes and the standard VO left and right arrows isn't working, try the old command of VO slash the key to the right of the right bracket and below backspace, it is working on mine to collapse and expand mailboxes that I cannot interact with using the arrows. Hope this helps. What would you all like to see in scripts to speak system status?
Hi all, Now that I have four of them consistently working, I feel ready to share what I've been working on for the last couple days. I am putting together a series of Apple scripts that will speak information, using VO if it is on or the default system speech if it is not. The ones I have so far are CPU, ram, wifi, and date/time. The really cool bit, though, is that each starts out by setting up a template. You can change this template, using keywords to define what is spoken where. Let's look at the time script as an example, since everyone likes to have the date and time spoken differently. Right now, I have my template set to: $24hours:$minutes, $weekday, $month $dayOfMonth, $year which yields, right now: 22:55, Friday, May 24, 2013 Don't like 24 hour time? All you need to do is change your template: $12hours:$minutes $ampm, $month $dayOfMonth, $year and you'd hear something like: 10:56 PM, Friday, May 24, 2013 My other scripts do the same thing - one keystroke, for instance, and I know which wifi network I'm on and at what signal strength. Again, all of these have templates with certain keywords, so you can change how the script's information is spoken to exactly how you want it. So, my question: what else would you all like to see? I plan one for the space on the startup disk, and probably all other attached volumes, plus one for battery, but what else would be handy? These scripts are really meant to focus on quick bits of information that sighted people can use the status menus or dashboard to quickly look at - they have immediate access, and now we do too, plus we can fully customize the output. I make no promises that all the ideas I receive will make it, but if enough people ask for a certain feature, I'll try to add it in. I've thought about weather, but I really want to just distribute the scripts and not have any additional libraries or anything that you'd have to install. I'll look more into weather at some point. So, any small pieces of information you'd like to have one-key access to, let me know. thanks. Re: What would you all like to see in scripts to speak system status?
Hey Alex, Very cool. I would love something if possible to make using the widgets more accessible not sure if that is possible through scripts. Also for us dummies is there anywhere we can read up on starting out with scripts. I have never used any except the time one that you can use through keyboard commanders and would like to become more familiar with them. Re: What would you all like to see in scripts to speak system status?
Widgets wouldn't really enter into this - my intent is to replace status menu displays for things like wifi, system monitors, and so on with scripts. You can then assign these scripts to keyboard commanders or regular shortcuts and invoke them to hear the information. You don't need to know anything about how they actually work to use them; even modifying the template for each script is dead simple and will be explained in the readme file that will come with these scripts. If you do want to get into scripting, google is your best friend - there are dozens of primers, tutorials, and wikis on getting started with Applescript, plus plenty of scripts others freely share online that you can use. Re: What would you all like to see in scripts to speak system status?
Alex, this is great! Where would I obtain the scripts that you so far have done? I'd like a script that would tell me if bluetooth was enabled or disabled, discoverable enabled or not enabled, and what devices if any are currently connected. The other thing that would be, especially in my professional audio production environment to know is if you could have v o read the percentage value of the input volume slider under system prefs/sound/input tab. This way, at any time, with one keystroke, I could know exactly what my mike level is set to on my input. Re: What would you all like to see in scripts to speak system status?
I'm going to send out a link to a zip file when I'm all done with everything - right now, though the four I have are working properly, I'd consider this to still be in alpha testing. It shouldn't be too long, though. Bluetooth is one thing I considered, but had not looked into. I'll do that and see if it is possible. Volume is really simple, though - I'll make a script that gives you everything, and you can use the template to choose what you want to hear. Re: What would you all like to see in scripts to speak system status?
Okay, I just typed that sound script up. You can access input volume, output volume, and alerts volume, all from 0 (muted) to 100 (max). you also have access to the "isMuted" keyword, but if sound is muted you won't hear the message anyway, so that wouldn't help. :) Did I miss anything? You can't set those values (that's really not the point of this set of scripts) but email me off-list if you want a script that lets you set those sound parameters. checking input sound
Hello all. I don't know if I've asked this before, but is there a way to really make sure the microphone is working without recording anything? Re: checking input sound
I don't have a usb sound device to test with, but I doubt it. Even if your input volume is set to 100%, there is no way for the mac to know if your microphone is functioning properly and feeding in the sound it is suposed to. It is just like having faulty speaker - the mac is sending the audio like it is supposed to, but if the speakers fail, the mac can't know that and will still think everything is normal. Why not just pop open a simple recording app 9Audacity or even a monitoring app like Line in) and test things? On May 25, 2013, at 12:31 AM, Devin Prater wrote: > Hello all. Re: What would you all like to see in scripts to speak system status?
No, I don't need it to set anything, mainly just to query. Chris. - Original Message - From: "Alex Hall" To: Sent: Saturday, May 25, 2013 12:26 AM Subject: Re: What would you all like to see in scripts to speak system status? Okay, I just typed that sound script up. You can access input volume, output volume, and alerts volume, all from 0 (muted) to 100 (max). you also have access to the "isMuted" keyword, but if sound is muted you won't hear the message anyway, so that wouldn't help. :) Did I miss anything? You can't set those values (that's really not the point of this set of scripts) but email me off-list if you want a script that lets you set those sound parameters. On May 24, 2013, at 11:58 PM, Chris Gilland wrote: Alex, this is great! I would love something if possible to make using the widgets more accessible not sure if that is possible through scripts. Also for us dummies is there anywhere we can read up on starting out with scripts. I have never used any except the time one that you can use through keyboard commanders and would like to become more familiar with them. Thanks, On May 24, 2013, at 11:03 PM, Alex Hall wrote: Hi all, Now that I have four of them consistently working, I feel ready to share what I've been working on for the last couple days. So, any small pieces of information you'd like to have one-key access to, let me know. thanks.
