I don't have a usb sound device to test with, but I doubt it. Even if your 
input volume is set to 100%, there is no way for the mac to know if your 
microphone is functioning properly and feeding in the sound it is suposed to. 
It is just like having faulty speaker - the mac is sending the audio like it is 
supposed to, but if the speakers fail, the mac can't know that and will still 
think everything is normal. Why not just pop open a simple recording app 
9Audacity or even a monitoring app like Line in) and test things?
