Hi Iona,

You have to press the N twice, e.g. Option-n, followed by another N.

I'm not sure what this is based on, if it's hardware of software specific. I
prefer to deauthorize the computer and authorize it again after the install,
this certainly won't hurt anything.

Re: Where do photos go in iPhoto?

2012-12-10 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

It more or less depends on how you performed the import, although, in all cases
the photos will reside in the Photos area of the Sources List. Depending on
how you have those photos sorted though, you may have difficulties finding
them. I have that area sorted by date so that the newest ones appear at the
end of the Content area.

• When imported from a camera or photos that come in from PhotoStream will be
in the Photos area, the Last Import area, the Last 12 Months area and most
likely in some sort of Event. They could also be in an Album if you had that
album selected when you performed the import.

• If you copied and pasted, then they will be in the Photos area as well as
wherever you pasted them.

HTH.

Re: Tax web sites

2012-12-10 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Dan
So far as I can see right now, it works great with VoiceOver on the iPhone. I'm
thinking about trying it when I put in data. I don't know yet because I have
discovered that using the paste phrase option on the Mac is a great thing too.
I have been using it lately to paste in numbers into Numbers. If you tell VO to
stop talking fast enough, then you can just paste the number into there without
extra phrasing.

I can't see why but Apple themselves do not support installing and

Windows 7 is officially supported by Apple.

step 3)? Or, am I missing something here? I am interested in this because I

RE: Accessible wifi scanner

2012-12-10 Thread Aman Singer
Hi.
I assume you mean a document scanner which works over wifi. If you
want some sort of device for scanning your area for Wireless networks, this
message isn't for you, there is software to do that, and the software
solutions are, for less extensive applications, at least, actually better
than thehardware units.
As for scanners, I have used the Samsung 4623FW scan/printer, and it
may be configured over the network. That is, one must connect the device to
the network via a cable, visit the configuration web page, and enter the
necessary details for the wireless network. When one reboots the scanner,
disconnecting it from the Ethernet cable, the scanner will connect to the
wireless network and all should be well. I also know that many scan/print
units have their own software which will allow you to configure by USB, but
the accessibility of that particular software is up in the air, web-based
configuration is generally more accessible. Personally, I'd buy on a return
policy.
I hope that's of use.
Aman

without assistance but I'd really like to be able to set this up and manage
it without sighted help.

Re: Bootcamp

2012-12-10 Thread Mike Arrigo
This is true, however, they also do not deliberately prevent you from
installing other operating systems. Once you create the second
partition, you can install whatever you want. The firmware on the mac
does provide basic bios emulation for operating systems that require it.

Original message:

I can't see why but Apple themselves do not support installing and
configuring Linux under Bootcamp; only Windows and even then only
Windows 7 is officially supported by Apple.

Re: iTunes Library location?

2012-12-10 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Lou,

Thanks for this suggestion. I had never really taken the time to investigate
the use of that folder until you mentioned it. You are totally correct and if
one was to use that method, it would be even easier than I had originally
outlined. You are also correct in saying that my original #4 should have been
done before the original #3, I was just in too much of a hurry, I guess, to do
a good job of proofing my response. The following steps could be better used
instead:

This can be accomplished even when iTunes is running as it will notice items
placed in that folder and start the process right away. If iTunes is not
running, it will start the organization process upon iTunes next start.
Remember to be patient depending on the size of your media Library and realize
that proper organization will partially depend on the accuracy of the original
tags.

Thanks again Lou for your insight.

figured out manually adding music to iPhone in iTunes 11

2012-12-10 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
HI all,

For anyone interested here is how to manually add content to iphone in itunes
11.

Enable side bar with command option s. YOu have to do this at beginning
otherwise it does not work.

1. go to music library and find songs you want to add to iphone.
2. Select them with either contiguous or non-contiguous method and press
command c to copy.
3. Go back to sources and select your i device.
4. Finally press paste.

hth,

Re: Where do photos go in iPhoto?

2012-12-10 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

The iPhoto Library is packaged up so that the photos, modified photos,
thumb-nails and such are all kept hidden within the Library package. It is
possible to show the package contents but not necessarily that easy to find the
exact photos you're looking for.

If you wish to copy photos over to somewhere else, you can select the photos
from iPhoto, then do one of two things:

1. Drag them from the iPhoto window into a folder on your Desktop then copy
that folder over to your wife's computer. The difficulty with this method is
the inconsistent nature of Drag and Drop behaviour in VO. I've done it a time
or two but haven't had a reliable workaround for every time.

or...

2. Select the photos you want then go under the File menu and choose Export.
Make sure that you choose the proper format for the exported photos from the
pop-up menu.

HTH.

time capsule, usb external drive and ehternet connected drive to router options

2012-12-10 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear Listers,

I hope this is not too far out of topic subject. I'm experiencing problems with
my time capsule and the need to backup from two different mac computers. The
difficulties are as follows:
I have a first generation time capsule with 500 GB hard drive. I also have two
mac computers but they are run by two different users: i.e. myself and another
user on a separate mac computer.

Because my time capsule has only a 500 GB hard drive, I decided to buy an
external usb hard drive which I have connected to the time capsule by the usb
port available. My thinking behind was that I would back up one computer to the
time capsule hard drive, and the other to the external usb hard drive connected
to the usb port of the time capsule.

It all seemed to be logical. I researched it - so I thought - but the trouble
is that every couple of days, my backups stop and the other users backups stop
because time machine fails to find the disks. So there is obviously a problem
which I have spent hours to resolve, and I'm frankly fed up now. I would
reselect the appropriate drives to which backup, I would do it repeatedly, and
it would be fine for a bit but then again the same thing happens.

I do not know what to do next. So I'm about to conclude that the solution with
the usb attached external drive is not gonna work. Maybe my first generation
time capsule is too old and can't cope with the 1 TB external usb drive
attached to it, or else time machine doesn't seem to know which disk to choose.

I was wondering then, unless there's something I'm doing wrong, whether to find
a solution so that I would attach my usb external drive via an ethernet adaptor
to the router itself or to the ethernet port of the time capsule rather than
the usb port on the capsule?

My question is, therefore, do you think it is possible? Can one attach a usb
external drive to an ethernet port on time capsule or router? Is there an
external hard drive that would have an ethernet connection that would enable me
to attach it to the router or time capsule and that would be recognised by my
mac computers?

Another concern I have is that I have failed to configure the two mac computers
correctly to use the right disks in the setup.

I'd welcome any suggestions. Please write off list if this is a topic too far
here.

With many thanks.

Andrew

Re: time capsule, usb external drive and ehternet connected drive to router options

2012-12-10 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Andrew,

A couple of things come to mind. I used to have a 1st Gen TC before it
cratered. There was a common issue with those units where they kind of
overheated, affecting some chips on the logic board, then they'd lose
connectivity either to the HD or with the actual networking hardware. This
could be happening to your unit thus causing the intermittent problems. If
you've given each of the HDs, both the internal TC HD and the USB connected HD
different names and have instructed each computer to backup to the specific HD,
then you shouldn't experience issues that way either.

Most network storage devices I've seen, at least in Canada here, aren't
particularly cheap. You may find that connecting a network storage device to
your TC to be more expensive than simply purchasing a newer, faster TC or
Airport Extreme and connecting your existing external 1 TB HD.

One way to test things is to disconnect your external HD for a few days. The
computer that backs up to the internal HD of the TC will continue to back up
fine and if there's an overheating issue, it will persist. After your test
period, reconnect the USB HD to the TC and see what happens. This should
isolate things a little so you can determine where the problem may lie.

HTH.

2012-12-10 Thread Harry Hogue
Hi guys,

I am interested to know how I can go about putting icons on my home screen from
other pages in the phone. Specifically, I am interested in putting the compass
on my home screen (it is currently in the utilities folder on page 2), and I
would also like to put the timer and alarm clock on my home screen as separate
icons, if that is even possible. They are all currently under "Clock."

Thanks for any help. I really appreciate it.

Harry

What's 1080p content? I'm looking at getting one down the road, and would love
any info anyone can give me. I listened to one of the podcasts on
blindcooltech about it, and it sounds amazing, but don't know if there's
anything different between that model, and the new one that's out now, so if
anyone has something they'd like to share, I'd love to hear it.

In my opinion, and this is my opinion only, you may as well dig in and learn
iTunes because there is nothing to compare to it. And, it is really quite

Hard drive failure

2012-12-10 Thread Kristeen Hughes
To Mike and anyone else who remembers that I had a problem with one of my
minis, I now know what it is. I took it into the Apple store today in the hard
drive has failed. So I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the problem,
but I wouldn't have been able to do that. It took it about three weeks to
actually fail. The guy at the store says sometimes that happens. I'm just very
fortunate that it is still under warrantee, because that is and expense I can't
afford right now.

Anyway thank you to those who try to assist me during my many questions.

Re: please can some one recommend an accessible alternative to iTunes that will allow me to mannege my current iTunes libary and iPod?

2012-12-10 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

There are accessible alternatives for managing your music and other media on
the Mac such as VLC, but I'm pretty sure that you won't find much that will
allow for the syncing that iTunes does between Apple devices. You may be able
to play purchased iTunes Music with other players but I don't believe that you
can use other players to play iTunes movie or television content.

I'm not 100% positive of this but pretty sure.

Re: Another question but probably an easier one

2012-12-10 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

The best way to do this, in my opinion, would be to open the external HD,
Interact with the Toolbar within the open window, navigate over to the Search
field then enter your search text. When you do things this way, the results
will be limited to the items within the open window. So, in this case, it will
only look within that HD. If you wish to narrow them further,, simply open the
folder where you wish to look for the given search criteria then follow the
same process.

HTH.

Re: Putting Icons on iPhone 3GS Home Screen

2012-12-10 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Harry,

Placing the Compass and Clock on the Home screen is entirely possible but
separating the Timer and such out of the Clock is not. The Alarm, Stop-Watch
and Timer are all built-in to the Clock app and thus cannot be pulled out.

To move items out of the Utilities folder, double-tap and hold on the item
until VO says moving said item. Don't let go then drag your finger towards any
edge of the screen, usually I go left or upper left. Vo will say something
like "Moving outside folder,", just lift your finger at that point and it will
be taken out of the folder. Press your Home button once to take it out of Edit
mode.

You can press it again to close the folder then use the same process to move it
to wherever you wish on the Home screen. Be careful not to drop it in another
folder or on another item. If it's dropped on another item, a new folder will
be created. If you move to the right spot, VO will announce the Row and Column
and you simply lift your finger to drop it there. Items after the place that
you drop it will be pushed out of the way. Also, note that if your page is
already full, items can be pushed to the next page.

HTH.

Delay Before Time and Date Spoken Using right-option-t Keys

Hi, guys,

I've noticed for quite some time that when I press right-option-t for time as

twenty-second delay before anything is spoken. I'm just curious if anyone else

Thanks,

Re: Delay Before Time and Date Spoken Using right-option-t Keys

2012-12-10 Thread Alex Hall
Me too. My theory is that the script to speak the information has to
be pulled from the hard drive and loaded into ram, then the voice used
has to be looked for and loaded if it is not already being used. Does
the script use a voice that vo is not using by default? If so, I have
a script that uses vo's own speech, speeding the process a good deal.

Re: Delay Before Time and Date Spoken Using right-option-t Keys

2012-12-10 Thread Harry Hogue
Alex and Teresa,

I have found this same issue, and have this theory as well. I do not often use
the keyboard commander VoiceOVer scripts for this reason, such as opt+B for
battery, opt+M for Mail, etc. With each of these commands there is a lengthy
delay that doesn't make the command practical to use much. Once it is loaded
into memory, it then works fine. As for the voice, I use Fred on a regular
basis, and still find this delay even though the voice used for the script is
the same one that VoiceOver uses at other times.

I hope this helps.

Re: Another question but probably an easier one

2012-12-10 Thread Harry Hogue
Kristeen,

Tim gives some good information, here, and I would like to also note that this
works in the Mail application and within any application with a tool bar where
a search box is also present. In all of my experience, the search box is
located at the very bottom of the window, so doing a VO+end (VO+shift+FN+right
arrow on the laptop) will do the trick. Once you have typed your search
term(s), press return, then press VO+end again. Then press VO+left arrow a
couple of times, and you will hear "Path," and then "Listview." The listview
is the one you want. Interact with this and you will find your search results.
This was terribly confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it it is a
really nice way to search your Mac. Searching for Mail messages is not quite
as friendly because of the having to interact with the messages column and then
the messages list, but that's the only slight inconvenience I've found.

I really hope this is helpful.

Thanks,

Harry

Re: Putting Icons on iPhone 3GS Home Screen

2012-12-10 Thread Harry Hogue
Tim,

Wow -- this was amazingly helpful; thank you very much. Did you find these
tricks with the iPhone out by playing with the phone? I don't recall any
detailed instructions about moving items around with VoiceOver on the phone,
only when using VO with the Mac are deliberate VO commands usually provided, or
so it seems.

Thanks again. That is, by the way, what I thought about the Clock app.
