Kristeen, Tim gives some good information, here, and I would like to also note that this works in the Mail application and within any application with a tool bar where a search box is also present. In all of my experience, the search box is located at the very bottom of the window, so doing a VO+end (VO+shift+FN+right arrow on the laptop) will do the trick. Once you have typed your search term(s), press return, then press VO+end again. Then press VO+left arrow a couple of times, and you will hear "Path," and then "Listview." The listview is the one you want. Interact with this and you will find your search results. This was terribly confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it it is a really nice way to search your Mac. Searching for Mail messages is not quite as friendly because of the having to interact with the messages column and then the messages list, but that's the only slight inconvenience I've found.
I really hope this is helpful.
