iTunes 11 web area

2012-12-07 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi,

in earlier versions of iTunes there was a web area next to my music. In this I
could find and buy music that fitt to my own music in the library. I enjoyed
this function very much and bought quite often music there. In iTunes 11 I
can't find this window anymore and can't figure out how to bring it back again.

Does anyone know what happened to this window? Is it possible to show it up?

Thanks and regards
Jürgen

2012-12-07 Thread Debbie April Yuille
I totally agree with you. I bought an iPod touch 4TH Gen which has the A4
Chip and am selling it cause I find that it's just too slow with VO and iOS
6. Which is a real shame as the new iOS has some really great features. I
also find that the a4 Chips even seem to struggle iOS 5.

I've never had that happen, honestly. Nor have I had the reset wiping out VO
happen either. I honestly think Apple jumped the gun a bit on having iOS 6
support devices with the A4 chip, and should've stuck with A5-powered
devices or later. That's just my opinion, however.

Subject: iPod freezes, needs hard reset that kills vo

Hi all,
Ever since iOS6 hit my iPod, I have had it crash three times, usually while
unlocking it. The crash is so bad that I have to do a home/power reset. Of
course, thanks again to iOS6, that reset now wipes out vo and my triple
click home setting, so I have to use iTunes or a sighted person to get the
iPod talking again. Has anyone else had this happen? Any ideas on how to
avoid it? Thanks.

clean install or upgrade?

2012-12-07 Thread Martin Brown
Hello folks.
At the moment I am running Snow Leopard. I have just purchased Mountain
Lion, but have not installed it as yet. I have created a bootable flash
drive. I am very undecided on weather to go for a clean install or just
install it over Snow Leopard. Any advice from those of you who have taken
both paths would be much appreciated.
My system is in good condition, so I am very tempted to take the easy way
out and install over my existing tried and trusted Snow Leopard. If I do, is
there anything I need to look out for?

Not at all. Had the Bootcamp Support software be successfully installed,
your partition would be labelled to Bootcamp.

The only option is a finish button. One thing i have noticed is that the

Could this be the reason?
Thanks.

Re: Iphone 4 vs 5

2012-12-07 Thread Jessica Moss
Ok, for those using the 5 who have used the 4S prior to getting the 5, have you
seen any difference in the camera's performance? I've thought about at some
point upgrading, and tried explaing how much better the camera was supposed to
be compared to the one on the 4S to my dad who is sighted, and to a friend of
mine who hasn't had an IPhone yet, and where my dad was concerned I got the
response "whoever told you that is full of shit," and my friend didn't seem to
think it was that much better but couldn't tell me why, so just wanted an
oppinion from someone who can compare these 2 side-by-side.

Re: clean install or upgrade?

2012-12-07 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Well, having done both upgrading and a clean install, I can say without
reservation of any kind whatsoever, but a clean install is the best way to go.
If you do this, you'll get the nice snappy performance that you originally had
from your Mac. Just be sure to backup all your stuff before you do it.

Re: clean install or upgrade?

2012-12-07 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
I'd advise a clean install, only because once your system is up and running you
will know that you are running a clean system from afresh: I personally like
clean rather than over the top because if anything is not working right
afterwards you can't say it wasn't because you installed over the top. When I
did buy Lion, before Mountain Lion, when I upgraded from Snow Lepard, the Mac
Book Pro which I had before, didn't work as well so since then, it's been clean
for me. However, no computer yet so can't enjoy the fun and games you've all
been having with Itunes.

Read2Go skipping (was Iphone 4 vs 5)

Re: FTP Client

2012-12-07 Thread Michael Babcock
Is there a way to do traditional FTP from the terminal? I ask, because I was
only able to figure out how to ask FTP from the terminal. Additionally, the
trick with mounting the drive on the finder, I have found has only work for
some FTP servers. For example my server that I have with host gator won't allow
me to mount the FTP server on the finder, and copy files over. I can Peru's the
FTP server via the finder, but am unable to copy or paste files that way. This
is why I decided to utilize Transmit.

text it worked fine (until the iPod ran out of ram). So, what version of
your book are you using, daisy text or daisy audio?

Re: clean install or upgrade?

2012-12-07 Thread Mike Arrigo
Some may disagree with me on this, but it's my opinion that any time
you install a new release of an operating system, whether the mac,
windows, or anything else, it's always best to do a clean install. Not
only does this give your system a fresh start, but it also clears out
any left over clutter.

Original message:

Hello folks.
At the moment I am running Snow Leopard. I have just purchased Mountain
Lion, but have not installed it as yet. I have created a bootable flash
drive. I am very undecided on weather to go for a clean install or just
install it over Snow Leopard. Any advice from those of you who have
taken both paths would be much appreciated.
My system is in good condition, so I am very tempted to take the easy
way out and install over my existing tried and trusted Snow Leopard. If
I do, is there anything I need to look out for?

Re: FTP Client

2012-12-07 Thread Alex Hall
Well, I have not yet had to try the terminal, but from what I read online it is
no different than any other command line ftp access. That is, you type ftp,
followed by your domain, and hit enter. Type your username and password and
you're in, with the usual commands (put, get, ls, pwd, lcd, and so on)
available to you.

Re: Read2Go skipping (was Iphone 4 vs 5)

2012-12-07 Thread Alex Hall
Well, even with the low ram of the iPod, I've never had that happen. You should
definitely email Bookshare support to report it, it might be something to do
with the larger screen on the iPhone5 or some other new component the app is
not handling correctly. I will (hopefully) soon have a 5 so I can test this out
to confirm it.

I will have to try this when I get home. It has been several years since I
utilize terminal solely for FTP. I am able to utilize terminal for SSH just
fine, but for some reason I was thinking I wasn't able to solely FTP into a
server via terminal. Thank you, this gives me something to try.

Of course, then you have to reinstall any third party apps, and all your
data files need to be backed up first, right?

Sounds like an extreme remedy of last resort. Are there benefits to doing so

Hi phil.
WHen you boot in to the restore part of your drive, and go to disc
utility.
In there you can erase your macintosh hd drive and then just click
re-install lion or mountain lion which ever you have.

Let me know if i can help, i can help you on Skype if need.
Thanks.

Re: super-duper, or time machine and why?

2012-12-07 Thread Phil Halton
I run super duper and have it setup to create a system image every week going
back four weeks. That to me seems sufficient, and if I need to, I can go back
four weeks to restore my system. So, if something screws up badly, and I don't
notice it right away, I've got a chance of restoring to a clean state before
resorting to a wipe and clean install.

Re: Itunes 11 and sorting (NOT)

2012-12-07 Thread Phil Halton
don't know of any, but it's easily done in iTunes as well. Just go to the
recently added playlist and do a batch edit on the files you imported. Then, if
necessary, you can further edit each file as needed. No need really for an
external tag editor in my view.

  Hi,
I looked on Applevis but found no results. I am wondering if anyone
recommends an accessible Mac id3 tag editor other than itunes. That way tag
info can be edited before import. Seems like that info isn't available in the
finder.

This isn't just with iTunes 11; the same thing has always happened in

other files by dragging my folders into the vlc media library. You can fix the
organization relatively easily by using cmd-i and entering the correct info but
if you have a lot of files like that, you may decide it's not worth it.

Re: FTP Client

2012-12-07 Thread Mike M
So I am trying to get things worked out through Finder since I don't know
enough about terminal to feel comfortable yet.
I am trying to put a new folder in a certain area and like Michael
can't copy and paste through the finder.
Is this normal since there are two of us having the issue? If so then I
guess I will have to learn the terminal tricks to do it.

made the changes to bring some familiarity back to the app, you’ll find good
use out of these keyboard shortcuts.

We’ve split them up into three distinct sections based on usage, and you’ll be
able to start and stop songs, change volume, hide and show the sidebar, toggle
the new MiniPlayer, and access all of your media libraries, all with the help
of nothing but some simple keyboard shortcuts.

General Usage & Navigation Keyboard Shortcuts

Spacebar to play or stop playing the selected song
Option+Return to add current song to “Up Next”
Command+. to stop current action
Command+Right Arrow to go to the next song
Command+Left Arrow to go to the previous song
Command+Up Arrow to increase volume
Command+Down Arrow to decrease volume
Command+Option+S to Show or Hide Sidebar
Command+/ to Show or Hide Status Bar
Access Specific Features

Command+Option+3 to show or hide the Mini Player
Command+Option+M to toggle the iTunes window into the Mini Player
Command+Option+2 to show the Equalizer
Command+Option+U to show Up Next
Accessing Media Libraries in iTunes

Command+1 to see Music library
Command+2 to go to Movies library
Command+3 to access TV Shows library
Command+4 to access Podcasts
Command+5 to go to iTunes U
Command+6 jumps to Books library
Command+7 to go to Apps
Command+Shift+H to go to the iTunes Store home screen
You’ll notice that some of the media library keyboard shortcuts won’t work if
you don’t have anything stored in them in iTunes. For example, if you have no
iBooks available in iTunes, then hitting Command+6 won’t do anything.

This post was inspired by MacGasm, who listed a handful of the keyboard
shortcuts that let you quickly jump around media libraries.

Are we missing any other useful keyboard shortcuts? Let us know!

Re: Read2Go skipping (was Iphone 4 vs 5)

2012-12-07 Thread Brian Miller
Hi there,

I'm using the iPhone 5 RTG app. I did not have any problems at all
with the app with my iPhone 4.

I've posted this question to the iPhone listserv as well but didn't
get a response, so I thought I'd try here just in case.

Thanks,

Brian M

If Bookshare support does not help, you could try deleting and re-installing
the app. That is the only thing I can think to do; an app running worse on a
more powerful device just doesn't make sense.

You are absolutely right that it shouldn't operate worse on a more
powerful device... This is why I am so puzzled and frustrated.

How does one uninstall an app, anyway?

I noticed this on my iPod4, but only when using the daisy audio that
Bookshare can now generate. I honestly stopped using the text versions
 of
books because I hate reading with the speech in the app, but when I did
use text it worked fine (until the iPod ran out of ram). So, what
 version
of your book are you using, daisy text or daisy audio?

Re: Read2Go skipping (was Iphone 4 vs 5)

2012-12-07 Thread Alex Hall
Double tap and hold on any app until vo says "editing apps". Then lift your
finger, double tap Read2go, and double tap delete when the confirmation popup
appears. This will erase all your books too, so you'll have to download them
again and you will lose your place in them. Once it is gone, hit the home
button to exit this editing mode, then open the app store, go to the updates
tab, double tap the purchased link near the top, and find Read2Go.

Re: super-duper, or time machine and why?

I would agree that if you have to choose one go with Super Duper since it
creates a bootable drive whereas Time Machine does not. Not a bad idea to use
both though.

Moving songs around inside playlist

2012-12-07 Thread Traci
Hi all,

I've been playing with my playlist and getting the song order just how I want
it. To do this, I usually use the mouse down keys, then vi-up_arrow or
vo-down_arrow. Well, this is successful about 3 or 4 times, then it doesn't
work. Any ideas why?

I can still mouse down and up, but the song doesn't actually move.

Thanks for the help,

Re: clean install or upgrade?

2012-12-07 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi. As others may have said, performing a clean install might be the better
option. But from personal experience doing two upgrades, upgrading first from
Snow Leopard to Lion and then from Lion to Mountain Lion, my system hasn't been
acting weird or anything. So if you don't want to go through the steps of
performing a clean install, an upgrade will suffice.

making power points with keynote?

2012-12-07 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I have a friend who has a windows machine but wants a mac. She says she needs
to make powerpoints and that this is not accessible on the mac, but I thought
it was. So, can a blind person compose and edit powerpoints on the mac with no
sighted help and have them look okay? If so, is it a relatively easy process,
or is it one of those things that can be done only with much patience, time,
and a total lack of intuitive and easy use of Keynote? I am thinking of
garageband: accessible, sure, but not at all efficient to use for much of
anything.

What're you looking for exactly? Sorry, I'm a bit behind on my e-mail to

Are you trying to find Roxio Toast Titanium? If so, you're not gonna find
that in the app store. You'd have to go to Roxio.com and probably find it
there. I actually bought my copy a while back at Best Buy.

I can look for you and see if I can find the digital download, as I know
that they have one up there. I just need to look and see more specifically
where.

2012-12-07 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

What the heck?

It definitely! should not wipe your settings/tripple click, nor should it
turn off Voiceover. I just did it over here on my devices to test things
and couldn't regenerate things. I can't speak for an IPod Touch 5th gen,
but on my IPod Touch 3GS which is on 5.1.1, as well as my IPad 3rd gen, my
IPad mini, and my IPhone 4S, which all have I O S 6.0.1, I never had that
problem. I've just done this about 3 times on all those devices, and not
even one of those 3 times did this happen.

What generation IPod are you having this problem with? Could it be maybe a
hardware bug causing things to do this? Furthermore, what're you doing with
the thing right before it freezes?

Hi all,
Ever since iOS6 hit my iPod, I have had it crash three times, usually while

Re: iTunes 11 web area

2012-12-07 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
The html window is at the most bottom of the screen. Go as far bottom right
corner as you can go without interacting, and it should be there. If that
doesn't land you on it, then maybe your view's set a little differently, but
generally, if you vo+left arrow from there a few times, you should hit it.
just be sure when you're looking for the area not to be interacting with
anything. I've had even a stranger issue with the itunes store, but I'll
get to that in another e-mail.

Hi,

in earlier versions of iTunes there was a web area next to my music. In this
I could find and buy music that fitt to my own music in the library. I
enjoyed this function very much and bought quite often music there. In
iTunes 11 I can't find this window anymore and can't figure out how to bring

Does anyone know what happened to this window? Is it possible to show it up?

Thanks and regards

Re: iPod freezes, needs hard reset that kills vo

2012-12-07 Thread Alex Hall
It's an iPod fourth generation, about two years old and with no other symptoms
of anything. This all started with iOS6, and I know a couple other people had
the same thing happen. Well, not the freezing, but the home/power reset wiping
accessibility settings. When it happens, I think I'm always waking it up to
unlock it. Sometimes it will freeze up when I am entering my passcode, and all
I have to do is wait for it to re-lock itself then try again. Rarely, though,
and only since iOS6, it will not even come on and I have to do the dreaded
reset.

Not a rant, I promise! A very minor bug in the ITunes11 store

2012-12-07 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I'm not gonna rant and rave like I have done before, I promise. Just read
what I have to say. I'm gonna keep this real short and sweet. I haven't
written Apple Accessibility quite yet about this, however, if any more of
you are experiencing this as well, let me know, as I'd be happy to write
Accessibility on our behalfs although I'd encourage all you do the same, if
you find this bug.

A lotta you may remember the bug that we had with the app store on an IPad
with I O S. Remember how after scrolling down the screen with Voiceover so
far, it would quit scrolling? Well, I think we're having a very similar
issue now on the Mac in the ITunes store. Let me be a little more specific.
Again, I'm gonna keep this as brief as I possibly can, unlike I normally do,
but at least let me explain.

OK, let's say that I go to the store menu up in the menu bar, then I go to
view my account: whate...@whatever.com

OK, so I put in my password for security reasons, and go to the ok button,
or just hit return. Either/or. Usually just hit return. OK, now on the
next page which loads, I find that I only can scroll so far down. Voiceover
definitely! reads the entire html content area, all the way to the tip
notch bottom, but it seems like Voiceover is reading, but not correctly
tracking, even though the actual focus is set to follow the Voiceover
cursor. And yes, I do have cursor tracking enable, so that's not really a
problem. A practical example is: on this page, if I go down to where it has
the manage link to manage my subscriptions. If I vo+space on that manage
link, it wont' click. I've also tried routing the mous, and hitting
command+Vo+F5, then vo+shift+space. About the only two things I've honestly
not yet tried is command+Vo+F5 which really shouldn't be necessary anyhow
seeing I have it set to have the mouse cursor follow the Voiceover cursor,
but just to be on the safe side... yeah... Then clicking my actual
macbook's trackpad. I've not tried that nor have I tried doing this with
trackpad commander, flicking down there then double tapping the track pad.
I almost wonder if I turned on TP commander, then once at a certain point, 3
finger flicked up, if that would scroll things. The question's just where
the heck would I navigate to, before doing that? I'm not even totally
convinced that would work. It might though.

This basically also makes it imposible for me to click on the see all link,
to be able to look at my purchase history. I dono if the other store pages
are also this way, but I'd suspect they probably would be. It's almost like
voiceover's tracking, and scrolling but the page itself visually isn't, thus
causing me to not correctly be able to click things. Even though vo+F3, and
vo+F5 tell me the correct things under the cursors, and even though they
both always match each other being they're both tracking each other, I'm
still not getting anywhere when I try activating the links. The item
chooser, or web rotor isn't really helping either. I even tried just
tabbing through then hitting return on the links, but that did some very
undesirable things. It seems to be activating links I didn't tell it to
activate... usually the link right before the one I want. Although that's
inconsistent, as sometimes if I then say ok, add a link to it, and I go one
link past! the one I need with tab, then hit return, it sometimes then
activates the wrong link as well. It's so intermittant that I can't really
tell you the exact behavior. I just wonder if this is something you all
also in Mountain Lion are experiencing with ITunes 11. If so, let me know
and I'll go ahead at that point and shoot off an e-mail to Accessibility.
They fixed the IPad bug pretty quickly, so I have no reason to believe this
also couldn't be taken care of fairly soon. I almost wonder if Apple's even
aware of it.

Take care.

Chris.

Re: FTP Client

2012-12-07 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Mike,

You most definitely! can use the terminal to do ftp. I do it all the time!

ftp hostname

Then type your user name and hit enter.

Then your pwd and hit enter.

Then use all your standard commands.

I'm not gonna list what they do, but I'll give you a list of some of the major
ones below, and you can google what they do, if you don't know.

lcd
cd
mkdir
rm
lcp
ls
ls -1
chmod
chown
mv
exit
get
put
bin

That's just to name some of the most useful commands.

You also can do

ftp username:password:port@hostname

Finally, pasv is another good command worth noting and looking up.

Thank you kindly,

Christopher-Mark Gilland.

Is there a way to do traditional FTP from the terminal? I ask, because I was
only able to figure out how to ask FTP from the terminal. Additionally, the
trick with mounting the drive on the finder, I have found has only work for
some FTP servers. For example my server that I have with host gator won't allow

Mac and IOS Tutorials

2012-12-07 Thread Mike M
Hey all,
I am cross posting this to both Mac and iPhone lists.
I have just launched a new section on my website which consists of
short to the point guides and tutorials on Mac and IOS.
There are almost 20 recordings you can listen to right on the website
and as of now, since it's so new, focus on mainly beginner topics. These
recordings are separate from the podcast, which has a new RSS feed and
therefore new iTunes listing. So if you have subscribed to it in the past,
sorry but you have to do it again. Just search How to be Blind in iTunes or
Downcast and you will find it.
I will constantly be adding to the tutorial pages with more advanced
topics once the beginner ones are knocked out.
App reviews will start as well if your into that.
I am trying to build a good resource for the blind and visually
impaired so if you have feedback please share it with me off list.
To visit my tutorial page you can click this link
http://htb2.com/tutorials/

To visit the How to be Blind homepage just go to
www.htb2.com

Thanks everyone!

Re: making power points with keynote?

2012-12-07 Thread Alex Hall
Thanks. A quick textual overview might be good, I mostly want to know how the
process would work once you load up keynote. Again, this isn't for me - I've
never made a powerpoint in my life - but rather for a friend who is rather new
to vo and the mac; she has an iPhone and limited access to a mac, but not her
own. She comes from Windows, so I presume jfw and MS Powerpoint. I'm not
looking for you to do a comparison, but in case that helps, there it is. Thanks
again.
