I'd advise a clean install, only because once your system is up and running you 
will know that you are running a clean system from afresh: I personally like 
clean rather than over the top because if anything is not working right 
afterwards you can't say it wasn't because you installed over the top. When I 
did buy Lion, before Mountain Lion, when I upgraded from Snow Lepard, the Mac 
Book Pro which I had before, didn't work as well so since then, it's been clean 
for me.  However, no computer yet so can't enjoy the fun and games you've all 
been having with Itunes.
