Amadeus Lite - Exporting to iPhone Ringtone

2012-09-30 Thread Chris

Hello all.
I found a feature in Amadeus Lite to export a file as an iPhone
ringtone. I tried this, and it sort of works, except the whole file got
exported. I realize the limitation regarding iPhone ringtones in that
they must be no more than 30 seconds in length.
So can anyone tell me where I went wrong please? I left the Export as
iPhone Ringtone settings at their defaults.

Alternatively should I use an app like Fission to do this?
Thanks!

Re: Windows7 bootcamp and JAWS

2012-09-30 Thread Harry Hogue
i run Windows 7 with VMWare Fusion on my Mac, and JAWS works fine. Why would
FS´s official line be that they do not support it, since it is still on
Windows? Why should the hardware matter to them? It should only be a software
issue to them. I called them the other day with a question and just pretended
I had a PC, and, of course, they didn't know the difference.

Thanks,

Harry

the ram manager again. Some progress.

2012-09-30 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hello all.
Following up on my previous post regarding an accessible ram manager for the
Mac, I came across a free tiny utility called purge.
This little gem has absolutely no interface what so ever. You just run it, it
does it's thing, and you have lots of free RAM once again. Seeing as there is
no interface, there is there fore no accessibility issues with it.
It now has a place in my dock.
If you want to find it, do a google search for purge for Mac. I got my copy
from macupdate.com.
Hope this helps someone.

Re: protected pdf

2012-09-30 Thread Karen Lewellen

Hi,
A couple of suggestions that are far less expensive than Steve's below
smiles.
first, do not write kobo, call them. More often than not they use a
customer service filtering email which may have no idea what to do with that
message. time for a human.
Second, kobo may not be the issue, but the book publisher or author if
self published. If it is worth your investment, it is worth it to them
that you tell them of the issue.
Honestly fixing or breaking into the book does not contribute to
people who innocently
prevent access like this from learning.
More often than not, they are more than willing to learn, perhaps
replacing your copy with an unprotected one.
Just some ideas really depending on how much you value the money you spent
and the information in that book.

Very useful program

2012-09-30 Thread Kliphton
Hello, I use a program called "Movavi video converter". I originally used
it on windows, and still do. But it is much more accessible on the mac.
What this program does, is take your AVI, MKV, and many other formats of
videos and puts them in the MP4 format soe that you can put them in to
iTunes to be sinked with your I device. For me this was a huge help, since
I have over 2000 movies and TV shows that I like to watch, that are already
on an external HD, and I didn't want to have to by them again through
iTunes. Now I just convert the movies I want, import them in to iTunes, and
I'm good to go. No paying for extra data to watch through iTunes match, no
spending hundreds of dollars to buy them in iTunes store. Just spending 40
bucks for this program. And when a new version comes out, you get 30
percent off the upgrade. And for those of you who have a DVD collection
that you want to rip to your hard drive, I have heard of people using
handbreak for this, and even DVD remaster. Personally I have never gotten
either one of those programs to work for me. A program I did have success
with is called "DVD to AVI" It's made by a company called "Leawo software"
Not only does it rip the DVD for you, but by passes the copy write
protection with no other apps or programs to install. Don't know how vo
accessible it is, cause never used it on the mac. Personally I haven't
bought a DVD or rented from the redbox in over a year. I use other
resources not fit for this list. If you'd like to know more about that, my
contact info is always at the end of my messages. Hope this helps someone
save money like it did me.

Re: how to tell if running 64 bit under ML?

2012-09-30 Thread John Panarese
You can run applications in 32 Bit mode if needed from the Get Info Window
in Finder with command-i if it is ever necessary. The Get Info window will
also tell you if the app happens to be a 32 Bit app as well.

Improving Calibre Accessibility on the Mac

2012-09-30 Thread Teresa Cochran
hi, all,

I've decided i'm going to do what I can to encourage the developers of Calibre
to make the interface more accessible. As it stands now, there are many
work-arounds that have to be done to make it work. The only accessible
interface that works consistently is the command-line, and as far as I know, it
doesn't perform certain functions until plugins are enabled. Also, command-line
isn't for everyone, and I really think that a simpler UI would be beneficial,
if such a thing is possible. I realize Calibre is a humble project, but perhaps
something can be done to improve accessibility for this very useful application.

Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale

2012-09-30 Thread Steve Holmes
Help!!! Something terribly wrong with navigation of tables or something. When
I go to the below site and try and navigate the table, I can't go down through
the remaining rows. While inside the table of books, I use the VO-Arrow keys
to try and go on down past row 2 but it appears to be going across the table
and then it wraps back to top row again. What might I be doing wrong here? I
haven't had trouble with tables in HTML before.

I'm using 10.8.2.

I just went to a familiar transit site and looked up a bus schedule and that
table navigated just fine. So it is the table on the Take Control Books site
that doesn't work for me.

Any ideas out there on how to get around their table?

Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale

2012-09-30 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Steve,

I've just had a look at this table and it's a total mess! I can get further
down through it by using mousekeys, but the VoiceOver cursor won't go there.
This site is renowned for being horrible to navigate in any case.

Sorry not to have a better solution, but mousekeys is all that works for me. If
you want to try this method, make sure that you have the check box Speak text
under mouse after delay checked in the Verbosity category, Announcements tab,
in VoiceOver utility. Oh yes, and set the delay to zero.

Cheers,

Anne

Someone posted:

"Mac, I came across a free tiny utility called purge.
This little gem has absolutely no interface what so ever. You just run it,
it does it's thing, and you have lots of free RAM once again. Seeing as
there is no interface, there is there fore no accessibility issues with
it.

It now has a place in my dock.
If you want to find it, do a google search for purge for Mac. I got my
copy

from macupdate.com."

Me:

http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/39777/purge

On that site in the comments we find this about how it is already
available on the mac:

All this does is execute the 'purge' command that comes with the Developer
Tools (Xcode etc.) from Apple. The Developer Tools need to be installed
for this to work (you can also just type 'purge' in Terminal).

Bulk conversion of mp3 to Wave using Audacity or something else?

Hi folks,

It's been a while. I just downloaded Audacity and I need to convert about
80 or so 30 second mp3 clips to .wav. Is there any way in Audacity to do
this in one bulk operation? I really don't want to do them one-at-a-time.

thanks for any help,

braille display

2012-09-30 Thread Marianne Denning
This is a cross post because I hope for several responses. I am
purchasing a braille display for an elementary student. This student
has excellent skills with access technology. The student will be
using it with an IDevice and a Mac running OS 10 and Windows 7. JAWS
is the screen reader on Windows. I want a portable display but not
too small so I am looking at a 32 cell display or a 40 cell display.
Please let me know your experiences. The student uses a Braillenote
too.

Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale

2012-09-30 Thread Esther
Hi Steve and Others,

I navigated the table entries by setting the web rotor to form controls. Then
if you use VO-U you can move down the list to the item you want and use
VO-Space or your Up+Down arrow keys to check/uncheck the box. By default the
listed entries will be set to "Mountain Lion", I think. To change the listed
entries to something else, set your web rotor to links, use VO-U, and choose
"All Ebooks" (a really long list, though, so I don't necessarily recommend it)
or arrow down past topics to "General Macintosh", "Apple's Mac Apps", "Other
Mac Apps", "Airport & Wi-Fi", etc. Then activate the link to reload the new
entries, navigate to the heading "Save 50% During the Take Control September
Sale!", and VO-Right or Right Arrow to the table.

The other way that works for me is to use item chooser menu (VO-I), then type
the first few letters of "unchecked". Navigate down to the title you want, and
use VO-Space or the Up+Down arrow keys to check or uncheck the box. The issue
I have when choosing a link to load up another set of books is that these
navigation controls don't refresh with the new entries as being associated with
the titles. If I toggle VoiceOver on and off, I can view the newly selected
entries under Form Controls in the web rotor, or when I use item chooser menu
and type "u n c" to find the unchecked entries, and then I can check or uncheck
the boxes without any use of Mouse Keys.

Gremlins seem to be swallowing up some of my posts these last two days. I
originally composed a long and detailed answer to Cheryl much earlier in this
thread, only to have it disappear.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: help with nicecast

2012-09-30 Thread Chris
Nicecast sounds pretty cool, was going to buy it today as part of the
10th birthday special offer, but haven't even tried it. So what can I do
with it? It says I can create my own internet radio station. If that is
the case do I need to mess about with port forwarding etc? I mean just
imagine broadcasting my music collection to the internet smile.

Thanks for any comments on this.

Using Mouse Keys {was Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale]

2012-09-30 Thread Esther
Hi Steve,

I don't need to use mouse keys to check the boxes on the Take Control site (see
my previous post), but here's a link to an old post from the macvisionaries
archives:
• Re: mouse keys
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries@googlegroups.com/msg64233.html

You can skip most of the explanation, and just set up Mouse Keys to turn on and
off with by pressing the Option key 5 times quickly under System Preferences >
Accessibility (used to be "Universal Access" in earlier version of the OS)
under the Mouse & Keyboard options, and if you're using Mountain Lion, you can
also use Command-Option-F5, I think, to get to the panel to enable or disable
Mouse Keys. Make sure to do the verbosity set-up in VoiceOver utility that
Anne described. (It's explained in more detail in the linked post). Then you
can click on controls using your "i" key.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale

2012-09-30 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Okay, here's what I did.

I started where it says buy selected books button. i tabbed through the titles
and hit the spacebar only (not vo-space) to check the boxes. I was able to
simply hit enter/return on the category choice; I wanted to see all books. But
since I was then at the bottom of the list i had to use shift-tab to go through
the books and then hit space only to check items. Then on the cart page, if you
aren't seeing your total and couplon discount, use the item chooser and you
will see those things. If you are paying with paypal and it says it needs a
billing address to process your order, just keep going and when you are taken
back to the website you will be able to complete the purchase with no problem.
Admittedly it's a horrible website for accessibility if you don't know what to
do, but it is actually quite workable once you figure it out. I was able to use
it to purchase nearly $100 worth of books but I justify it by telling myself it
would have been close to $200 without the discount. Mouse keys is not necessary
at all on the website and since I'm known for using mouse keys often the fact
that I passed up an opportunity to employ them means they really aren't needed
- grin!

Rogue Amoeba 10th Anniversary Sale today

2012-09-30 Thread Esther
Hi All,

In honor of Rogue Amoeba's 10th Anniversary, all products on their web site
that are purchased today (September 30) have a $10 savings. Airfoil for either
Mac or Windows is $15 instead of $25, and if you want their combined Airfoil
bundle for both platforms it's $30 instead of $40. Audio Hijack Pro is $22
instead of $32. Fission is $22 instead of $32, and if you want to buy the Audio
Hijack Pro + Fission bundle, it's $40 instead of $50. Nicecast for
broadcasting your music is $49 instead of $59, and Piezo, a very simple
recording app, is $5 instead of $15.

The Rogue Amoeba web page for the sale is:
http://www.rogueamoeba.com/store/deals/TenthAnniversary.php

However, you can just go to the main web site, and today any of the items you
purchase will have the $10 discount applied, whether you use the above link or
the regular web page links from:

http://www.rogueamoeba.com/

HTH. I've listed the prices because on the sale web page I hear VoiceOver
announce all the items as a price drop from $25 to $5, which is not correct.
Also, on the check out page, by default the first radio button (for credit
cards) will be selected. If you want to use Paypal, switch this to the second
radio button. The sale is good for another 8+ hours.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale

2012-09-30 Thread Steve Holmes
Thanks to you and Esther, I managed to order 4 books so far. It is a strange
experience indeed. I had some problem associating checkboxes with the right
books though but I was probably mix and matching when to use VO modifiers keys.
It was almost easier to add more books to the cart and then just remove the
unwanted ones. I hope I can use the coupon more than once today. I might go
look for some more outside the mountain lion category.

Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale

2012-09-30 Thread Cheryl Homiak
When I used tab and shift-tab, the checkbox and the title of the book were
associated so that I didn't have any problem telling what I was ordering. They
were spoken together and as long as I didn't try to use vo-keys but just the
space bar, each checkbox was checked though it didn't say "checked" when i
pressed the space bar. I was able to fill my cart with 15 items all at once
correctly by using this method. I was using the anniversary link that Esther
provided but when I saw that this was only one category I went on to "all
books" and added more books without losing the checkmarks on the books I had
already chosen. Wile tabbing, I don't remember whether I was able to do
vokeys-space on "buy selected books" or if I had to just hit enter. But I don't
know whether I had any particular setting in safari that made tabbing work for
me and the method suggested by others certainly also would work. I don't think
the coupon has to be used only for one order.

Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale

2012-09-30 Thread Esther
I think you can use this coupon as many times as you want before the sale runs
out. Cheryl's suggestion of using tab and shift tab to navigate is very
robust. There's another way you can view all the listed books: one of the
entries under links that shows up after all the specific topics is "Year
Published". If you navigate to that link and activate it (VO-Space), you'll
view a set of links like "2012Ebooks", "2011Ebooks", etc. and you tab to these
and activate the links for books published by year. This can be helpful,
because if you use the "All Ebooks" links you'll have about 3 different
versions of GarageBand, multiple versions of the AirPort networking guides,
etc. according to when they were updated. If you browse by year, you can start
at 2012 and work back, and the most recent books are more likely to be of
interest. This is also a good way to find the application-specific guides for
third party software -- for example, if you're interested in using Scrivener on
the Mac, there's a "Take Control of Using Scrivener 2" guide.

I'm not sure exactly what time the sale ends, so check that the total has the
discount applied. After the subtotal there should be a line with the coupon
code and a negative amount that is half the subtotal. Then the total should be
half the subtotal with the coupon code adjustment. You shouldn't have to enter
the coupon code if you use the linked sale web site, though.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: Sirus XM app iPod iPad

2012-09-30 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
May I say something without sounding very rude, as I tend to normally do?

How much effort really did your friend put into it? Second of all, no offense
but are you basing this opinion on that of what your friend said, or that on
what you personally yourself has seen? I totally totally agree with you that
the app isn't very good, not at all, but come on, it's not that! bad. I agree,
I'd not use it... I'd use Musicdock instead, but it's not that bad. I still
can browse genres, and the different channels, and get them to play. It's
definitely a bit clunky, in your defense, I definitely'll give ya that, but it
can be done.

Also, again, this is only an opinion, not a fact, so take it as such, but I
completely disagree with what you said on the quality of music. There have
been things on XM I've heard, that I'd never dream of hearing on regular FM
radio. I may hear it on fm radio, but, not necessarily.

Airfoil allows you to wirelessly transmit audio around your home or

recording app, is $5 instead of $15.

The Rogue Amoeba web page for the sale is:

However, you can just go to the main web site, and today any of the items you

HTH. I've listed the prices because on the sale web page I hear VoiceOver
announce all the items as a price drop from $25 to $5, which is not correct.
Also, on the check out page, by default the first radio button (for credit

System Voice Rate Issues

Re: help with nicecast

2012-09-30 Thread Timothy Clark Music
it only goes to the server at your house.
i believe you can send a public address it would then go to those who are able
to connect.
you should use http://www.listen2myradio.com for streaming.
 it's free.
use shoultcast and set it up.
then you can give everyone your listen2myradio link and they can tune in.
you can get 5thousand listeners for free. you will have to pay if you want
more.
they are really good. I use to use them back when I ran a small station but
that's another story for another time. I never had to pay a thing. just be sure
when you are done streaming to go into it and turn off your listen2myradio
server or you will have to reset it meaning you will have to reconfigure nice
cast again.
 hope this helps
God Bless.

Safari Books Online

2012-09-30 Thread Paul Hunt
I'm also interested in learning CoCo. What is the URL for Safari Books Online?
What formats does Safari use for the books? Thanks so much.

Re: formatting Text in Pages

2012-09-30 Thread Christopher Edwards
Thanks to all who answered my questions. I am sorry I did not reply before
but I am up to my ears in boxes as I prepare for some major alterations to
my house. I am therefore also behind with my emails.

I think I gave rather a bad example with something as simple as making text
bold. I am in the UK and wrote the message at the end of a long and tiring
day. I will therefore give a very specific example.

I type some text in the body of a document and then stop interacting with
the various parts of the document as I make my way back to the formatting
bar and choose the paragraph style button.

Firstly I cannot read any of the items on the menu that appears as VO says
absolutely nothing. I did this at the Apple store and the trainer told me
the style and confirmed that it had been applied.

Then, when I went back into the document and interacted with the various
parts until I got to the body of the text I could not read the text I had
previously entered. I simply got a "dong" sound when moving either the VO
cursor or the actual cursor. This was because the actual text entry cursor
would not move any further than the header section of the document. We tried
doing everything we could think of with the cursor tracking but to no avail.

I know there are some issues with Pages and Voiceover but I cannot believe
they are this bad. I am sure I am doing something very simple that is wrong
so please can anyone tell me what it is?

Once again, many thanks,

Chris Edwards

I typed some text into the body of the document and then selected two
words so that I could format them as Bold. As soon as I moved back to the
Formatting Bar using the VO and arrow keys the text became unselected. I
did of course have to stop interacting with the various parts of the
document as I moved backwards. Then, when I moved forwards again the
cursor with the focus stayed in the Header area. I closed the document
without saving and started over again creating a new document and the same
thing happened.

Although the trainer was not very familiar with Voiceover he did a lot of
researching on another machine but we could not find an answer. I am sure
the answer is something simple like cursor tracking but nothing I tried
worked.

If anyone can tell me what I was doing wrong I would be very grateful.

Many thanks,

Re: formatting Text in Pages

2012-09-30 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Chris.
It sounds like you should be interacting with the body of the text, and maybe
you interacted with the heading. I gather you are in Mountain Lion. I had more
trouble with Lion with Pages.

Also, when you want to find items sometimes the item chooser is your best bet.
Try typing control option i and down arrow through the list.

If you just want to italicize text or make text bold, you can select the text
you want and then press command b for bold and command i for italics. There are
some more direct commands that would not require you to go to the menu. Anne is
our Pages expert on this list.

Regards,
Gigi

Re: protected pdf

2012-09-30 Thread Esther
Hi Lisette, Steve, and Others,

I think you can use Adobe Digital Editions to read that PDF. It works on Kobo
ePub books that are protected with Adobe's ADE DRM, and it also works on
library downloaded eBooks that you can check out on the web from libraries that
use OverDrive. (You can read the books in the OverDrive Media Console app on
an iOS device and download to that app, but the experience of reading eBooks is
much better in the Kobo iOS app.)

Given a choice, I usually get ePub books from Kobo, so I'd never tried it with
a PDF before this question came up, so I tried it on one of my DRM-free Take
Control PDFs.

I haven't tried with the updated version, but according to Bryan Jones on the
mac-access list, he's found no changes in the way the Mac version performs in
the latest version:
http://www.adobe.com/products/digital-editions.html

The main thing is that you still don't have the ability to navigate and read by
paragraph, line, word, or character on the Mac side, although you can use
VO-Shift-C to copy the page to TextEdit where you can do this. Bryan claims
that this is now possible in the latest update for Windows, although the
earlier Windows Adobe Digital Editions Preview versions 1.8 basically had the
same features as the Mac versions did.

I have to advance pages by pressing the right arrow key, but reading books with
Adobe's ADE DRM does work. And it does work for the DRM-free PDF I just loaded,
so this should work OK with your eBOOk. I'd say this is fine for leisure
reading, but for text books you'd really need to have better navigation options
supported.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Sirus XM app iPod iPad

Ok, I admit I haven't used the app for 6 months or more, but the last I used it
you couldn't get out of one channel and go to another channel using VoiceOver.
Has that changed. Finding the first channel went fine, but there was no

May I say something without sounding very rude, as I tend to normally do?

How much effort really did your friend put into it? Second of all, no
offense but are you basing this opinion on that of what your friend said, or
that on what you personally yourself has seen? I totally totally agree with
you that the app isn't very good, not at all, but come on, it's not that! bad.
I agree, I'd not use it... I'd use Musicdock instead, but it's not that bad. I
still can browse genres, and the different channels, and get them to play.
It's definitely a bit clunky, in your defense, I definitely'll give ya that,
but it can be done.

Also, again, this is only an opinion, not a fact, so take it as such, but I
completely disagree with what you said on the quality of music. There have
been things on XM I've heard, that I'd never dream of hearing on regular FM
radio. I may hear it on fm radio, but, not necessarily.

should've been. I dump Sirius XM primarily because their app was so crappy. I

Hi,

True. But, for what ever reason, that is the line they want to take.
But I agree, I wouldn't even mention I'm running it on Mac hardware
or, that I'm using a VM.

Skirting towards off-topic here, but I just got off the phone with

Mac. Did I get one of their famously clueless reps, or will I have a
problem running Jaws 12 64-bit on a bootcamp installation of windows

If so, what screen reader works well with bootcamped versions of
windows7 home premium?

Finally, will someone who has done the bootcamp thing PLEASE tell me
if I'll need a wired mouse for the windows install? I have a wired
apple keyboard, and a wireless trackpad but no mouse, neither wired

Re: Safari Books Online

2012-09-30 Thread CJ Daniel
Paul,

I think it is www.safaribooksonline.com. Or, it might be www.safaribooks.com.
Anyway, they've got a 10-day free trial. After that, the basic subscription is
$19 a month. That might seem a bit expensive, but I love the access to so much
technical information.

There are several formats available. I've had the most success with their
HTML. You search for titles, add the one you want to your bookshelf, open it &
move through the table of contents, & jump to the web content for each chapter.

Hope this helps,

CJ

Re: protected pdf

2012-09-30 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Have you gone to the Kobo website and made sure that this is only available as
a pdf? I seem to remember that some books had more than one download option and
once you buy the book you can download it in any format. Also, have you tried
opening your library on the device you are trying to get the book onto and
seeing if it just needs to be downloaded?

Re: iPad

2012-09-30 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

As far as I know, you must first set up the "Triple-click Home" to "Toggle
VoiceOver" before that functionality will work. Pressing that out of the box
will not turn on VO unless Apple has changed the default lately. As mentioned
earlier, it may be easiest to configure the Universal Access options through
iTunes. Then once VO is on, the Triple-Click toggle can be set.

Later...

Hi,

As far as I know, you must first set up the "Triple-click Home" to
"Toggle VoiceOver" before that functionality will work. Pressing that
out of the box will not turn on VO unless Apple has changed the
default lately. As mentioned earlier, it may be easiest to configure
the Universal Access options through iTunes. Then once VO is on, the
Triple-Click toggle can be set.

Re: iPad

2012-09-30 Thread Steve Holmes
I thought I heard that too but I tried it recently on an iPhone 4S and it did
not work there. I don't know its upgrade history, nor was I aware of what mode
the phone was in at that moment. I was shown the phone in a case and I thought
I'd be smart and see if VO would turn on with triple click home and nothing. I
think if I were buying a device right now, I would want to have someone look
over my shoulder or fire up iTunes for the first time to check out the
landscape as it were.

CJ

Re: Improving Calibre Accessibility on the Mac

2012-09-30 Thread Esther
Hi Teresa,

I remember sending you this information about some scripts that Jonathan Chacôn
wrote for Calbre. At the time (back in April) I couldn't get to the blog site
links, and thought they might have been permanently taken down, but the URLs
all seem to be working now. I think that working in the command line for
Calibre is fine, but these might be of interest to someone. (Like most
things, I found the original information in the archives for the macvisionaries
list).

Hi Teresa,

I think you'll have the best luck doing the ePub conversion with Pages, as Mark
suggests. I'll just mention that Jonathan Chacón did construct a service to
convert TXT, RTF, PDF and HTML format eBooks to ePub using scripts to run
Calibre in command line, and made it available at his web log site in August
2010. The web page was:
http://programaraciegas.weblog.discapnet.es/articulo.aspx?idA=1897
There were headings in Spanish and English:
• "Servicio accesible de conversión a ePub para MacOS X"
• "accessible ePub conversion service for MacOS X"
This was the direct download link for the zip file on that page:
http://programaraciegas.weblog.discapnet.es/archivos/id38/textConversionService.zip

The problem is that this web site doesn't seem to be on-line currently, and
hasn't been when I tried it a few times recently. Jonathan has a new web site
that is accessed by his free iPhone RSS app (in Spanish), "Programar a ciegas
RSS" by Tyflos Accessible Software.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Remove spotlight bar

2012-09-30 Thread Esther
Hi,

When you toggle out of Spotlight with Command-space it will also no longer
display the text that VoiceOver has just read, which is what I believe you
asked for. The only other way to clear this and still have Spotlight active is
to delete your search terms (e.g. select all with Command-a, then press delete
while in the Spotlight search field).

Cheers,

Esther

Reading Epub Books on the Mac

2012-09-30 Thread Steve Holmes
This may have been asked before but I don't recall answers just now. I'm
wondering if there are any apps for the Mac to read epub books ala iBooks
fashion? Sure Ibooks is fine on the iPod but when I'm home in front of my mac,
I would like to be able to read them there instead without altering format or
any of that. The ultimate solution would be to have a version of iBooks for
the Mac; I don't think that exists.

Are there any other solutions? How about iBooks Author? can that be used to
read epub material as well as prepare it?

Thanks, I did not understand after leaving Spotlight that would stop the text
being displayed.
Thanks for clearing that up for me.
Max.

 Hello all,
is it possible to not have the Spotlight bar always on the screen?
Also if I can't get rid of that bar until it is needed. Can I stop it
displaying the text VO has just read?
My wife finds this confusing when she is helping me with a problem.
 Thanks

Found how to fix the Spotlightbar

2012-09-30 Thread Agent086b
Hi all, I solved the Spotlight bar problem.
All I needed was to turn off Captions in VO. Now the Spotlight bar is gone
until I want it.
Thanks again for the help.
Max.
Thanks again.

Re: formatting Text in Pages

2012-09-30 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Chris,

In Pages, leaving the text area using VO removes the selection so you can't
apply a style. You have to set a hotkey for the style you want and just press
it in the paragraph to which it should apply.

You can check on what style is in operation by setting a hotspot on the Styles
drawer. To do this, open the Styles drawer with Cmd-Shift-t, navigate to it,
make sure that you're not interacting with it and set a hotspot. You can then
use VO-Cmd-hotspot to discover what is selected in the Styles drawer.

If you can't navigate within any text area, go there with VO, bring the mouse
and click.

There is a lot more than that to using Pages but it should help to get you
started.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Improving Calibre Accessibility on the Mac

2012-09-30 Thread Teresa Cochran
Thanks, Esther. I'll give that a shot.

I'm wondering now if there is a way to get the various plugins for Calibre
through the command-line. The GUI interface doesn't allow VO to read the
advanced preferences.

Thanks,
Teresa
