Re: Setting to not automatically add files to iTunes library.

2012-04-30 Thread Dean Adams
Hi ,
Just to add to what scott has said about using vlc player to play your
music movies etc you can change the default player for the music if you wish by
going to a music file and press command I to get the info for the file navigate
to the open with disclosure triangle press the space bar to expand vo right
arrow to where it says itunes app pop up button and arrow down to vlc player
that is if you have installed vlc player press vo space bar to select then you
will get a warning you don't have permission to change access to this document
only do you want to change permission to access this document with an extension
of mp3 to open with vlc player then navigate to continue this type of file will
then open with vlc player unless you revert your selection .
Regards Dean

At the risk of upsetting you Jenny, let me pose this question. If you do not
work for whatever reason, why do you need adaptive technology? In fact if you
cannot pay for your technology I get the impression that you feel the
"GOvernment" (state or Federal) should provide such. So, are you saying that
you are entitled to such technology? If so why? Do you know why your food stamp
benefits were cut as a result of marriage?? Does this fit into the topic of the
Apple products and in which way? Finally and most important do you believe that
because APple has essentially lowered the bar for entry into the adaptive
technology world, do you think it makes it possible for those with limited
income to purchase technology they want or may help them be more productive?

2012-04-30 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi,
In my quest for new sound solutions that will enable the computer to act as the
music source, i have come across a speaker system that i have fallen in love
with. It's called Libratone Live. It's an airplay speaker, which makes it
possible to stream music from an IDevice or computer directly to the speaker.
My question to Libratone Live owners, if there are any on this list, is is it
easy for a blind person to set it up so that you can use it as a speaker on
your network, and is the IPhone app usable with Voiceover?

Hello.

Please do not take what I'm about to say wrongly (I know I do not moderate the
list) but past experiences on many lists have shown me that people can get very
upset about these kind of issues (espically when we talk about getting
technology and how it should be acquired). It would be very wrong of me to ask
this be taken off list but if this is to be discussed, let's all keep a cool
mind and a sense of proportion otherwise these discussions can get very heated
and words said which are not meant. Scott, I am not criticising you for asking
these questions either, but we've discussed these things so many times.

Kind regards.

Kawal.

Re: Priorities

2012-04-30 Thread Sean Murphy
All.

I would raise a different slant on the whole discussion. No one took this up
before in one of my prior posts. This is a concept and please treat it as an
idea. If people want to discuss this off line to see if it could be actually
adopted. Then please let me know. I am more then happy to discuss.

A we all know Business only cares about the bottom line. Since this is the
situation. A solution to our problems is to become investors. So how can we as
a group become investors? Being individual investor will not have the same
impact as if we do it as a group. Let me put up some figures.

If 10 million people in the USA put $10.00 into a investment fund per month.
This would give the group $1.00 per month or 1.2 billion a year. If you
extend this to a international level and got another 20 million people. Then
the yearly amount grows to 3.6 billion dollars a year.
Having this type of yearly funds for investing into companies. Their attitudes
towards accessibility or what I would prefer to say Universal design will
quickly change. Since this type of money could place the fund managers who
ever they are on boards of companies due to amount of shares held by the
investment fund.

Basically what I have outlined is a different approach of changing peoples
attitude by playing the same game. I believe there is at least 10 million or
more people world wide that could afford $10.00 per month. Of course there are
those who cannot. But they would benefit anyway. Before you shoot the idea
down. Stop and think about if we had as a community this type of money. What
changes could be done. The fund could be open to anyone who wants to help. It
could even be open to all disabilities. That makes the numbers bigger and
making the pool of investment larger. Investing into proactive companies like
Apple would ensure they continue doing there good job. Informing companies like
publishers that we will invest x million per month over the next x months if I
believe would quickly change their attitude.

So take off the blinkers everyone and see what this idea could do to change the
world of technology?

Ideas or comments are more then welcomed.

Re: Screen locking issue

2012-04-30 Thread Sean Murphy
Hi Guys,

thanks for the tips. But I need to keep the password active on the screen
saver. I did find the solution after all. There is a post on Mac World showing
the methods. Basically you have to put the screen saver app on to the doc.
Disable the screen saver from preference. Then you can activate the screen
saver when you want.

Re: Priorities

2012-04-30 Thread Lewis Alexander
sean, I agree with you on this idea. from an international standpoint, not just
from a US standpoint, a huge change could happen with this kind of process.

what this effectively would do is open doors to international programming
companies, developers, etc to engineer their software to blind and visually
impaired users needs. There's real oportunities here we can all invest in.

take as an example this. I'm working as a cabinet maker / tool demonstrator.
For a lot of work I do, I need to rely on a package which could give me tactile
drawings. however, the main platform I used to work with back in the days of
windows 98, was AutoCAD. I took on as a road test, the newest version of
AutoCAD through the manufacturers. Guess what, it's coded in a non mac language
and cannot be used with voiceover in any way. So, I have a copy of autocad
sitting here doing nothing, locked to my user name. what a pain. Now, if we
created an investment fund internationally speaking and introduced this to
developers per year, then they can start work with our input in creating a
"universally accessible" package.

anyway, as regards the sensitivity of the subject at hand, there's no cause for
people to become wound up, offended or cornered in this. It isn't necessary and
getting us nowhere.

Re: web navigation?

2012-04-30 Thread Alex Hall
How, on both counts? arrowing, even in text areas, never has seemed
very consistent; I find myself guessing until I find what I want.
Maybe quick nav complicates things, I don't know. I didn't know you
could lock the vo keys, that sounds useful. I think I need to find a
complete keyboard reference for vo, as huge as that may be. Does such
a thing exist?

Re: web navigation?

2012-04-30 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Alex,

All the VO commands are shown in the commands menus which you get to by
pressing VO-h-h.

When in a text area, you need to interact for VO commands to work. However,
usually, you can navigate using just the arrow keys. As for editing text, the
insertion point is always between two characters, so if you're navigating to
the right, the insertion point is immediately after the last thing VoiceOver
spoke. If you're navigating to the left, it's before the last thing VO said. If
you press VO-F4, VO will tell you exactly where the insertion point is.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Garage band and ringtones

2012-04-30 Thread Scott Rumery
Hello, you don't necessarily
have to use Garage Band to make ringtones out of your own music. You can very
easily do this with iTunes. I recently did a presentation on this very topic
last Wednesday night for an iPhone Discussion conference that my friend Beverly
Hunter and I have on the Conversation Station every Wednesday and Saturday
night. These conferences oar held at 7:00 P.M. Eastern Time on Wednesday, and
6:00 P.M. Eastern Time on Saturday. If you would like to listen to my
presentation on the Conversation Station just call: 616-883-2999, press pound
to skip the welcome message, then press the number 5 for recordings, and then
enter the recording ID 17379. I give step by step instructions on how to use
iTunes to make your own ringtones.

Lawal, I know that is not your intent. You are right that the questions have
been discussed here in the past and my point is to get Jenny thinking about the
things that she is saying and understand they really do not fit into the
context of accessibility of the Mac. Although the only context is that Apple
has in fact set the bar and that bar is not easily attained by other
manufacturers. Seeing the thread will likely result in pointless babble I will
comment no more. :)

Re: Garage band and ringtones

2012-04-30 Thread Scott Rumery
No, unfortunately there isn't. I didn't record it myself, it was recorded by
the Coversation Station system, and as far as I know the only way to hear it is
to call the line and go into recordings and enter the recording code of 17379.
This was the first time I did a presentation like this and I had fun doing it,
so I plan on doing some more of them in the future. I know that some people
don't like the idea of calling one of these coversation lines, but if just give
it a try, I think that you will like it.

Re: Priorities

2012-04-30 Thread Jenny Keller
Well,

Most things are not accessible without a computer, cell phone, etc. It is
easier and sometimes necessary for you to apply online for things.

I do feel that computers should be provided for those who qualify for them due
to income restrictions. Just because I don't work doesn't mean I should have
to go without means to do research on products, the ability for looking at ads
for even apartments, etc.

Even the food stamp office and such entities would prefer you to apply online
around here.

Yes, I feel entitled to some basic things.

Again, if deaf people can get free equipment such as a TTY phone, closed
captioning, and free relay services, than I should be able to receive such
things as at least a computer regardless if I work or not.

The wheelchair bound are also provided with free chairs, catheters, and most
buildings are adapted for them.

Please explain to me what the difference is.

I would love to be able to work, but it's not my fault that my health doesn't
permit, so I'm punished.

No the food stamp thing is not pertenant to the apple list, but the last thing
I'll say about that is that, we received double the amount that we do not now
that we are married.

Sucks to do the right thing.

Probably, as I've heard of others doing it, but iTunes is probably the
default way most people rip CDs on the Mac. You might want to change the
encoder on iTunes to default to a high-bitrate mp3 if you don't want AAC

Hi.

To access the menubar you can do two things:
Press ctrl f2 instead. If that doesn't work you can press ctrl cmd return and
then access the menubar by pressing VO m.

Re: Garage band and ringtones

2012-04-30 Thread Red.Falcon
Hi there!
This might help!
>From Esther a while ago!
use an AppleScript called "Make Ringable" that you can get from Doug Adams'
"AppleScripts for iTunes" web site:
http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=makeringable
This is a Mac-only solution. You can read the short description of the script
under the "Make Ringable v1.1" heading, and find complete details in the
viewable "Read Me" PDF that follows the download link after the short
description. If this is the first time you're using AppleScripts in iTunes,
you'll have to create a Scripts folder in your account under:
~/Library/iTunes/
Then, any AppleScripts that are placed in that folder show up as menu options
under a special Scripts menu for that application on the menu bar (in this
case, iTunes), that appears to the left of the "Help" entry. You select your
track or item, then navigate to the Scripts on the menu bar, arrow down and
select the AppleScript option you want to apply.

In this case, the script looks for the start and stop times you selected (e.g.,
you used the "Get Info" shortcut of Command+I -- or Control+I in Windows --
then navigated to the "Options" tab and entered a start and stop time for the
section of the track you want to play). You can skip this if your track is
shorter than the maximum allowed time for a ringtone (39 seconds). When you
run the script, the dialog window that appears after you highlight your track,
then select the "Make Ringable" menu option from the Scripts menu on the iTunes
menu bar displays the start and stop times (and the current length for the
ringtone), and prompts you to enter a Ringtone name (otherwise uses the same
name as your track). If no start and stop times are set, you're prompted with
to do so, and given the opportunity to exit the script. The script then
coverts the sections to a ringtone of the specified length and the correct
format, and adds it to your ringtones library. You're then asked whether you
want to reset the start and end times to the whole track before exiting the
script. The original mp3 file is left in your music library, and the new
ringtone shows up in your ringtones library.

If you have the "MoveAddict" software that allows you to move files, cut,
paste, and merge on the Mac, or if you're using one of the move AppleScripts,
you can just use those options to put the AppleScript in the
/Library/iTunes/Scripts folder under your user account. Otherwise, just copy
and paste to that location. So, for a first time AppleScript user, the
directions would be:

1. In Finder, press Command-Shift-H (go to your home directory)
2. Command-Shift-G ("Go to Folder" shortcut) and then either type or paste in:
Library/iTunes
into the text of the dialog box, and press "Return". (Navigate to the
Library/iTunes folder in your account).
3. Command-Shift-N to create a new folder and name it "Scripts", with a capital
"S". If you already have a Library/iTunes/Scripts folder in your account you
can skip these three steps.
4. After downloading the "Make Ringable" AppleScript, either copy or move it
(and the ReadMe instructions) to your ~/Library/ITunes/Scripts folder. If you
copy the AppleScript, the Finder actions are:
4a. Command-C (copy)
4b. Command-Shift-H (go to your home directory)
4c. Command-Shift-G ("Go to Folder") then type or paste in:
Library/iTunes/Scripts
into the text box of the dialog window, and press "Return"
4d. Command-V (paste)
5. Now, when you're in iTunes, there will be a Scripts menu on the iTunes menu
bar, so after highlighting a track in your music library:
5a. Control-F2 (or VO-M) to the menu bar, then Left Arrow twice to the Scripts
menu
5b. Arrow down to "Make Ringable" and press "Return"
5c. Follow the script dialog options.

You can also assign shortcut keys to the AppleScript options, but you should do
this when the application (here, iTunes) is not running, since these get
defined and loaded when the application starts up. Doug's AppleScripts for
iTunes site has many excellent AppleScripts. The site is donationware, which
means that you're free to download and use these scripts, but if you really
find them useful, you're encouraged to send in a donation, since he writes
these for free in addition to his regular job.

HTH. Cheers,

Command-Comma while in iTunes to bring up preferences. Then in the
toolbar select General and then navigate down through the General
preferences. Right after the setting for what to do when you insert a CD
is an Import Settings button. VO-space on that and you'll finda popup
menu for what encoder to user. Choose MP3 Encoder. After that is another
popup for Import Settings. I choose Higher Quality (192 kbps) from that
pop up button. Then go on to the OK button for the encoder settings and
then OK again on the Preferences window. After that, any CD you import
in iTunes will store the tracks as mp3 in your Music folder.

Re: Priorities

2012-04-30 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi,
This sounds like a very interesting concept and one much worth investigating
further, however, i want to put in my own 2 cents. I am not going to go into my
view of the whole access/disability situation, because it's so politically
incorrect and cynical that i don't think it will do good to vent it out on the
list, however, i want to ask: Are we unanimous about what constitutes
accessibility? I mean what works for me others claim doesn't work for them.
Take the scanner issue for example, where the opinion on this list is that the
Scangear utility is inaccessible, and yet i work with it if not on a daily
basis so at least once per week and i am totally blind. What i say is if we're
gonna invest money into companies to make them make their products accessible
we must think what the least common denominator of accessibility is. Some may
think some web pages are inaccessible whilst others think they're a bit messy
but not hard to work at all. Do you see where i come from?

Re: Priorities

2012-04-30 Thread Paul Hunt
Hello Sean. This is a great idea and I would be interested in discussing it
further. I had thought that we could impose an accessibility tax to be levied
on everyone who buys a piece of electronic equipment. The money could be put
into a fund and grants be given to companies that agree to develop accessible
stuff to defray their R&D costs. Your idea is much more proactive.
I just wonder how to make this happen? On Apr 30, 2012, at 5:05 AM, Sean Murphy

Re: Word count in Pages

2012-04-30 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
Mike,
In pages, go to edit, then Writing Tools, then Show Statistics and then a box
will open, I use the swipe on the trackpad to get to the wordcount area after
title and name and comments etc.
For spell check, do CMD+colon I think. CMD+semi-colon just checks that word I
think, while Cmd+colon checks the whole document. Any suggestions you have will
appear in a table, which you need to interact with if you have multiples,
otherwise you can just tab through to ignore or change if the word is already
selected. I'm not sure how to change the language, actually, this is something
I would like to know-for me, it's changing it from US English to UK English, it
keeps trying to change my our words to or and my ise words to ize.

It's in the Document inspector under the Info tab.

Have you tried Cmd-colon? I use Cmd-semicolon and correct as I go through the
document.

For the whole program to be in Spanish, your machine must be running in
Spanish. But you can change the document language in the Text inspector in the
More tab. You need to select the whole of the text for the change to be
possible.

Skype meeting?

2012-04-30 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I am wondering if anyone who is an experienced mac user might be willing to
volunteer some time to meet with me on Skype? It seems that every time I get
something figured out, the mac decides to show me how wrong I am. Example: I
was writing a tweet just now and moved to the character count box to see how
many characters I had left. Before I moved, I reviewed my text with the arrow
keys (quick nav off). When I returned to the tweet input box, the arrow keys
did nothing and I had no way to review my text to get to the point where I was
going to edit. Quick nav was on and off, I interacted with the box, but nothing
happened. Same for web navigation: I rotored to lines to read a forum post line
by line, but up/down arrows only gave me the boundary sound. Quick nav was on,
and heading havigation worked, yet moving by line did not. I tried turning
quick nav off and arrowing around as someone on this list said was possible,
but nothing at all happened. Another example: my twitter client still randomly
gets focused on by vo, but not the OS itself. Another: I read that web spots
were created automatically, yet I see none available. What happened here?

So, bottom line: if you have some time and don't mind explaining these apparent
basics to me, I'd appreciate it. I have Skype and Facetime available and will
use the iPod, so you can hear what the computer is doing and we can do anything
to it, including restart. Thanks in advance!

Have a great day,

Re: vlc player

2012-04-30 Thread Lewis Alexander
the most accurate way of sound reproduction is to avoid MP3 altogether and use
AIFF format. OK it means that the CD in size may equal to AIFF in size but if
y're really serious about the quality of your audio, use AIFF and it's
supported on all ipods.

Re: Converting mp3 files

If you're not averse to the unix shell I've been playing a good bit with
the Sox package:

which I installed using MacPorts:

http://www.macports.org/

Once setup you can do commands like

sox originalfile.aif convertedfile.mp3

to covert one format into another. Of course there are piles of
additional parameters such as data rates, channels, effects and mixing.

vm fusion problems

Hi,

Ok, I'm having problems with vm fusion 4. I think there's a conflict with
mission control and my arrow keys or something. Some time ago, somebody on one

problem is that my arrow keys aren't working properly for me now that I've
installed vm fusion 4, if anybody has any insight, that'd be great!

Thanks,

I think you are referring to the thread about YouTube using Flash video
players and how Flash is generally not usable with Voiceover. YouTube
also supports using the html5 player for much of its content. You can
join that trial by going to

Question on behalf of a friend: Acquiring OSX 10.5 install disc

2012-04-30 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hello, all. I'm hoping this isn't an inappropriate question for the list, but
I'm trying to find out something on behalf of a
friend. He's got an older macboo. It isn't capable of running OSX 10.6, but he
thinks it might be able to run 10.5.
Unfortunately, when he bought the macbook, it didn't come with any Install CDs
or anything. This individual is on an
extremely tight budget, so I'm trying to find out if there's a way to get ahold
of OSX 10.5 for little or no cost. If it's
reasonably priced, I would even be willing to help him buy it, but if there's a
free alternative somehow, or a resource I can
point him towards, I would really appreciate any information you may have.
Please feel free to contact me off list to reduce
list traffic. Like I said, I hope this question isn't out of line; I definitely
want to help my friend acquire the software
he needs through legal channels, but my macbook is too new for me to have the
software he needs.
Thank you all for your time, and I hope that everyone is having a really great
day.
Missy

Re: Question on behalf of a friend: Acquiring OSX 10.5 install disc

2012-04-30 Thread Lewis Alexander
hi missy,

please could you find out for me what spec macbook this is and it's date /
model?

macbooks by their very nature are capable of running snow leopard but will
struggle on lion. as OS X 10.6 is intel based, the macbooks were intel chips,
the reason your disks won't work on his machine is due to the fact the disks
are prepared for your version machine so are locked to the machine serial
identifier.

the only way to do this is to find a copy of snow leopard for sale. I have my
retail DVD here but sending it out would take a long time to the USA from
previous experience.

let's see what we can do here.

RE: Question on behalf of a friend: Acquiring OSX 10.5 install disc

2012-04-30 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hi! This is most definitely not an intel based macbook. It's currently running
osx 10.4.1. I found a 10.5.6 download on the
apple site, but don't know if that will do my friend any good. As for the
machine specs, I don't think the individual in
question is capable of finding out that information. All he can tell me is that
it's an Ibook g4. If I download this 10.5.6
thing for him, could I creat an install disc from it? Actually, I'm not sure
this is a full osx install; it's downloading
rather quickly. Again, any assistance you might be able to provide is extremely
appreciated.

hi missy,

please could you find out for me what spec macbook this is and it's date /
model?

macbooks by their very nature are capable of running snow leopard but will
struggle on lion. as OS X 10.6 is intel based, the
macbooks were intel chips, the reason your disks won't work on his machine is
due to the fact the disks are prepared for your
version machine so are locked to the machine serial identifier.

the only way to do this is to find a copy of snow leopard for sale. I have my
retail DVD here but sending it out would take a
long time to the USA from previous experience.

let's see what we can do here.

Re: Web Kit

2012-04-30 Thread Chris Blouch
Webkit is the engine behind several browsers including Safari and
Chrome. What most people are referring to when they talk about webkit is
the 'nightly build' which has all the latest fixes and features that
will appear later in Chrome or Safari. It also has all the latest bugs,
so your mileage may vary. You can install webkit and run it as just
another browser although it will inherit the 'chrome' of Safari, so it
will seem like the exact same browser in many respects. You can get
Webkit from their site at:

The site contains some really good audio described Hollywood movies.
I even tried a couple of them and the quality of the audio description was

However, when I tried downloading a few movies today, I was directed to
the SendSpace page as usual, but when I clicked on the ' click here to
start the download' link, the download didn't start and I got weird
errors like 'You can only download one file at a time' or 'There are no
 slots available for download'.
This happened when I tried downloading the Harry Potter Movies and also
the Hangover part 1 and part 2.
I've tried downloading them on a number of occasions, but I haven't had
 any success yet.

Please help me if you can to solve this problem.

Re: vlc player

2012-04-30 Thread Chris Blouch
True enough. If you've got the disk space AIFF is as good as it gets
since it is pretty much a bit for bit dump of what's on the CD. You can
choose AIFF as the encoder the same way you pick mp3 except that there
is no bitrate selection since it should be the 44.1Khz that the original
CD was recorded at. The downside is that a full CD of 74 minutes will
take about 682MB. At a decent 192kbps mp3 encoding will take about
107MB. That's why these encoders are so popular because you get a very
clear rendition of the original track in a fraction of the disk space.
The funny bit is that some folks actually like the mp3 encoded version
better than the original. There are debates over whether mp3 has lopped
off peaks that some would find annoying or whether people have just
grown accustom to how mp3s sound in general. Of course then there is the
crazy studio audio running 192kHz 24 bit, but that usually doesn't make
it to the consumer. Even if it did, like the rare chef who can't stand a
super taster test, only a few people would be able to tell the difference.

Re: Flash programs

2012-04-30 Thread Chris Blouch
Lots of debate on this topic but in general Flash is fading and HTML5 is
rising. Many things that could only be done in Flash can now be done
with standard HTML. A big part of that push came from Apple excluding
flash from iOS devices, so anyone wanting to play in that rich field has
to do it without Flash, and if you're doing it without Flash you might
as well do it that way for all your platforms. So the uptake on html5
replacing Flash has been surprisingly robust, but far from complete.

As far as getting Flash accessible, you can check the archive for my
gory detail email on the Adobe/Apple impasse which pretty much means
Flash will not be accessible with VO anytime soon. With Flash fading, I
doubt Adobe would invest the resources to make this happen, ever.

Re: Question on behalf of a friend: Acquiring OSX 10.5 install disc

2012-04-30 Thread Chris Blouch
If it's an iBook G4 then this really is an old laptop since the last one
was discontinued in 2006, making it at least 6 years old and up to nine.
Most laptops start creaking at 3 years. That said, the G4 was the last
PowerPC chip used in Apple's laptops before they went to Intel and OSX
10.5 was the last version to support the PowerPC. 10.5 also requires the
PPC processor to run at least 867Mhz so if it's a really early laptop
running at 800Mhz it won't install. You can find out the processor speed
by choosing About This Mac which is the first item under the Apple menu.
assuming it's the 1.07Ghz or faster processor then you should be able to
install OSX 10.5 on it.

The second snag is that Apple no longer ships/sells OSX 10.5 so you're
left with bargain basements, ebay and the like. I have an old G4 tower
running a web server that I wanted to upgrade and had to pay through the
nose to get 10.5. I think anyone who has a hoard knows that old mac
owners are going to be desperate to get it. Most places I found want
$150 or more for this treasured discontinued stuff. Another snag is that
some of these are 'upgrade' DVDs so you'll have to have an install of
10.4 already on the drive. I got caught one time where the hard drive
died and after installing a new one I found out that 10.5 wouldn't
install without re-installing 10.4 first, and I didn't have my 10.4 DVD
with me.

Hope this helps.

macbooks by their very nature are capable of running snow leopard but will
struggle on lion. as OS X 10.6 is intel based, the
macbooks were intel chips, the reason your disks won't work on his machine is
due to the fact the disks are prepared for your

the only way to do this is to find a copy of snow leopard for sale. I have my

RE: Skype on the Mac made accessible?

2012-04-30 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hi there! Thank you so much for starting this topic thread. Hopefully, this is
the appropriate place to bring up my number 1
complaint with skype on the mac.
When I first got my mac and installed Skype; I believe this was version 5.1 or
so, the program always started in the contacts
list. Ever sinve 5.3 or so, when I run the program, it starts me on something
that Voiceover tells me is called Skype Home.
It basicly looks like a facebook clone. Granted, it's not prohibatively
difficult to navigate to a table, interract and find
my contacts list and stop interracting, but I personally feel that this is
something I shouldn't have to do, and it's just
aggravating enough that I avoid using skype as often as possible, and only run
it periodically to check for updates in hopes
that this issue will some day be fixed. I've checked preferences time and
again, and there simply isn't a way to configure
how the program starts.
To make this even more frustrating, when I ask people about id, they claim that
they don't have this problem. I'd be more
than happy to disconnect skype from facebook if it would fix the problem, but
would rather not if I don't have to. I don't
really understand the point of the favorites thing either, and miss the
simplicity of the first mac version of skype I ever
used. Sorry for the aimless rambling, but I hope it makes sense to someone.

Re: Skype on the Mac made accessible?

2012-04-30 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
What's even weirder is that, if you compare the Skype home pane's information
to that available on the main site, many status changes simply don't show up on
the Skype home page. Maybe it only reports status changes for Skype and
Facebook users, but that seems a bit limited. In point of fact, I rarely use
Skype Home, unless I want to post something quickly to FB.

As for navigating back to the "recent," subheading of the table at the top, I
never found it much of a chore one way or the other. If you Interact with the
table below the tool bar and arrow *down*, past the favorites sublevel, all
recent activity is displayed. I wish they would make the "missed event,"
counter last longer, though.

thanks steve.. guess I'll either have to go archive diving or hope I come
across them as I go through this mountain of mail that just won't die! The
really weird thing about this whole thing is, everything was working great
until I had to do a complete wipe of my system and reinstall lion a couple of
weeks ago, now a bunch of things, including mail are just acting weird!

Just goes to show macs aren't left out of being finicky sometimes-lol!

Re: more mail problems

2012-04-30 Thread Steve Holmes
It does disppoint me some to hear that people are having to format and
reinstall Lion. I figured Macs to be lots more stable than that. I
would have figured them to be more like linux systems where the OS
doesn't have to be reinstalled all the time like Windows.

Re: Skype on the Mac made accessible?

2012-04-30 Thread Steve Holmes
In addition to Skype, are there any good SIP phone clients for the Mac
which are accessible? I've used Linphone on Linux from the command
line but would be interested in a Mac solution if there is one. Skype
may be popular but the protocol is proprietary and SIP is more
universal. SIP is probably one of the best VOIP protocols out there.

Re: Skype on the Mac made accessible?

2012-04-30 Thread Alex Hall
So, are there any major problems with skype on the mac? I've thought
about downloading it, but it works so well on my iPod, and I had so
many frustrations with it on Windows, that I hesitate to waste the
time. Is it inaccessible, or just harder than it should be, or do only
some features not work?

RE: Skype on the Mac made accessible?

2012-04-30 Thread Missy Hoppe
That doesn't sound at all right or fair. How much is this skype premium. If
it's cheap, and there isn't a monthly fee, I
might consider it, but it never used to be that way, and if that's the case,
how is it possible that at least 1 person I've
talked to who is also using the free version is able to start in contacts like
it used to do? I'm not trying to complain or
be difficult; am just genuinely puzzled by this.
Thanks!

I raised this issue wiht Skype beta team a while ago and I was toldwas that
this is by design. If you wish to not have Skype
not start at Home, rather your contacts, it's required to purchase Skype
Premium.

FYI: eBay (not Google owned Skype before) and now Microsoft has it

RE: Skype on the Mac made accessible?

2012-04-30 Thread Missy Hoppe
I guess I'd classify it as just being a lot harder than it should be. Since I'm
not a huge skype fan anyway, I rarely bother
because I don't like fighting with it, but over all, it's accessible provided
you're patient enough to do all the tedius
navigation it makes you do.

So, are there any major problems with skype on the mac? I've thought about
downloading it, but it works so well on my iPod,
and I had so many frustrations with it on Windows, that I hesitate to waste the
time. Is it inaccessible, or just harder than
it should be, or do only some features not work?

Which edit field are out talking about? In Dial Pad? How would that work?
When you're dialing numbers, the touch tones are generated and go out like a
telephone. Which edit field do you need back?

Re: Skype on the Mac made accessible?

2012-04-30 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
It is navigation intensive at times, especially if you don't turn cursor
tracking off and stay in the message window. One thing I am hoping to find out
is whether they have fixed the bug that silences the "message received," sound
when your focus is in the message window--I wanna hear the sound for every
message I get, whether I'm in the Skype window or not. But I haven't had this
version long enough yet to get a message. :) I'm just not popular like the
rest of you... However, I believe that I'd call it accessible, if a bit klujy
for VO users.

Re: Skype on the Mac made accessible?

2012-04-30 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
There use to be an edit field so that you could copy numbers and paste It use
to be edit field, then 1 to 0

I have the skype Free version and it starts in the contacts.

Skype is a fiddly program to use with all the interaction and you can't easily
get to the missed events to see who and what they are and then to clear the
events.

This was a change made in Skype 5.X. It's possible that your friend is running
an earlier version of Skype, e.g. V2.X. Please Skype.com for pricing details.

2012-04-30 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hi! The person who claims not to have the problem I'm having is on this list
and is supposedly running 5.7 the same as I am.
Is there still a way to run the old versions? In the mean time, I guess I will
look at the skype prices, but the last time I
was on the site, I found it to be rather confusing.

This was a change made in Skype 5.X. It's possible that your friend is running
an earlier version of Skype, e.g. V2.X. Please

Re: A question about Dashboard

2012-04-30 Thread John Panarese
Hello,
OK, with the ESPN widget, after you hit VO space on the Info button, VO
left and you will find a popup button to change the current sport. Just VO
space on that and VO down arrow to pick the sport you want and then VO space
again. Navigate to the done button and VO space on that.

As for the Weather widget, it might take a few seconds for the change to
show. You have to be patient with that one.

I just tried copying and pasting into the dial pad, and that still works. As
for telling who or what an event is, I just select them in the table, read the
last few entries in the HTML message window, then close the conversation if I
don't want to deal with them.

Re: Skype on the Mac made accessible?

2012-04-30 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Here' the problem.

1. I have a custom greeting. When people say they leave me voice mail, I
interact with the HTML area where the voice messages should be found, but, no
messages show up?

3. I used the fix suggested by the Skype people; namely, delete the
C/Users/Ray/Library/App Support/Skype/Share.xml file and then reset to Do
nothing with calls then shut Skype down for five minutes then restart it and
set radio button to rout to Voice messenging.

Re: Priorities

2012-04-30 Thread Eric Oyen
I have been suggesting this for the last 10 years or so and it seems that no
one wants to talk about it. there are also the excuses that it is someone elses
problem, they are too broke, etc. I have suggested having a number of people
invest in a firm, assign a voting proxy and force the issue at the
stockholder's meetings. so far, all I get is a room full of crickets. 10 years
harping the same message and no one seems to bother.

an accessibility tax would also work (think of it like the RIAA tax on audio
tapes all those years ago). unfortunately, you mention taxes to the general
public, even when said tax is in their own best interest and you will have such
an outcry that the matter will get dropped like a red hot potato. that is the
state of affairs that we are under these days.

perhaps we need to form a core group and lead by example.

Re: Skype on the Mac made accessible?

2012-04-30 Thread Jenny Keller
Sorry if this has already been addressed but I came in on the middle of the
thread, but I would like it if skype just had a general message window that
when you got the message alert tone that someone has sent you a message, it
would just give you a list of messages with the senders name beside it in stead
of having to go back and forth through your contacts to find out who messaged
you.

Also, if you mess up and pass that contact and then go back to it again, you
can't see your notification of messages from that sender.

At least that's what I've heard of. I've never gotten to be able to find out
who messages me because I can't figure out who the message alert tones are from.

Re: Skype on the Mac made accessible?

2012-04-30 Thread May McDonald
Wait, how do you get it to start in contacts? I have the free version and can't
get it to do that either.

looktel recogniser -- also a money reader?

2012-04-30 Thread Venkatesh Potluri
Hi listers.
Can the looktel recognizer also be used as a money reader? despite the
existence of a money reader, I am asking this question as it doesn't
recognize indian currency, at least to my knowledge. I wrote to
looktel a couple of times asking them about currency support for india
and got no response. :(
Thanks in advance
Cheers
Venkatesh Potluri
