I would think you could open the .xml file in Safari, not sure how easy
navigation would be though.

Re: Mail, unread versus read messages.

2012-04-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Veronica,

If you are not interacting with the messages table and just navigating up and
down with the arrow keys, VO should announce unread, reply was sent, message
was forwarded, and so on, but not "Read". However, if you interact with the
messages table, the status column will say "Blank" if the message has been read.

Cheers,

Anne

Replacing an ordinary hifi, but with what?

2012-04-17 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi good people.
I'll soon be moving and starting a new life in a way. I have sold my old hifi
because i never found the songs i wanted when using a cd, because i never
labeled the cds and lately i have started to listen to music from the computer
rather than the stereo. What i want to do now is to have a stereo sound system
with my beloved IMac as sound source and if possible even my i-devices and
therefore i want to have some speakers that support airplay. What speakers
would you guys recommend? I've heard of a danish speaker called Libratone
Lounch and wonder if anyone have heard of these and if not, as i said i seek
recommendations on good speakers that don't sound too plastic or have too much
emphasis in any direction, i'm to old to change my living room to a disco.
Any tips would be appreciated.
/Krister

Spell Checking in Mail

2012-04-17 Thread Jim Gatteys
Hi all!
I have my mail set to spell check when the message is about to be sent. I
wonder if there is a way to read the sentence or line in question with the
mis-spelled word? I think it would help in context to know what the checker is
about to change. Maybe I should revert back to a different spell check option.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jim

Re: bookshare and mac?

2012-04-17 Thread Christine Grassman
Maria, you can also get a free file extractor called the unarchiver. Download
and install it, then when you download a bookshare Daity title, you open the
unarchiver, put in your bookshare password, and it extracts the file just as on
a PC. You can then read the book in Safari or other preferred web browsers
which otherwise work with VO.

Re: Guitar chords

2012-04-17 Thread CJ Daniel
Michael,

You have to be signed up for the NLS' program for the blind & physically
handicapped. After that, you're eligible to borrow from the Library of
Congress's music program. So, if you're receiving books from your state's
lending library or downloading books from them, you're good to go. Then, you
would simply call 800-424-8567 & order to your heart's content. If you're not
signed up, then you need to contact your state's cooperating library & get the
paper-work started.

Let me know if I ca help,

CJ

the screen from hell

2012-04-17 Thread Jennifer Perdue
I'm sure it's not a login screen because I have tried entering my password and
it won't go to the desk top.

Also, if I manually turn the computer off and then turn it back on, it goes
straight to the desk top.

It is a grey screen with an apple in the middle and has something, I can't see
what, below the apple.

I'm getting very frustrated with this thing because I shouldn't not have to
wait for it to boot, get that stupid screen, turn it off, and wait for it to
boot again giving me the desktop.

Please help.

Re: the screen from hell

2012-04-17 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
I wonder if the power button is set to put the computer into sleep or stand-by,
rather than use\e turn it off and on again? When I press my power button, I
still have to choose whether to sleep or restart or shut off, unless I use the
"panic button," method of just holding it down until the computer goes off.
Jenny, try checking in Apple / System pref / power and see what the settings
for it are.

Re: the screen from hell

I do hold the power button to turn it off, that's how I can get the desktop the

I shut it down with the regular shut down sequence via the apple menu to shut
it down when I am done with it.

Hope that helps.

Re: Replacing an ordinary hifi, but with what?

2012-04-17 Thread Chris Blouch
The Libratone Lounge setup seems nice bout for $1300 I have to wonder if
a more old school setup wouldn't sound better. I have my mini connected
to a nice Dennon receiver and JBL speakers. The speakers I bought at
auction when the media production place I was working for went under and
love the sound. The Dennon is hitting 12 years old now and just keeps on
working. Some of their models today include Airplay so you could beam
your music to your receiver and then use a good pair of speakers. That
would also give you a nice surround-sound decoder for DVDs if you chose
to run the optical cable from your Mac to the receiver.

Purchasing an iPhone

2012-04-17 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Hi all,

I live in India, and I'm interested in purchasing an iPhone.
The iPhone 4S is very expensive here. It costs $1000.
I have a couple of cousins who live in the U.S. and frequently keep coming to
India.
So, what's the best deal that I can get if I wish to purchase the iPhone from
the U.S. and use it in India?
I believe that the iPhone 4S costs $200 in the U.S. with a contract.
But I'll have to regularly pay the contract violation fee and there's no way of
unlocking it for using it here.

I am also willing to purchase a refurbished iPhone if I get it for a good price.
So, Please give your valuable suggestions.

Cheers,
Rahul

switch to next primary wwindow and switch to aux window specifically, but give

Re: something to make it easier for you

2012-04-17 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn

Jonathan C. Cohn

Did you get the script saved in AppleScript? Once that is done then the rest
of what was discussed is in the VoiceOver Utility gotten to via the VO-F8 key
sequence. In the Utility there is an area called commanders, and within the
commanders you can link VoiceOver actions to keys or some touch pad actions.
There is also a item to run an applescript from the commander area.

This should hopefully be enough information to get you to find Apple Help
documents that describe what you need to do in more detail.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: the screen from hell

2012-04-17 Thread Jennifer Perdue
No,

Voice over does not work at all. It just sits on that screen and does nothing.
It always figures though, that when sightling is here, I can't get it to do
it so they can tell me what's on the screen.

Funny how electronics know.

To solve this problem, you mentioned that voiceover is not running or not
working? have you tried running voiceover? this may be a logon screen issue..

let me compile some suitable settings for voiceover stability which will assist
in your mac experience. please note that as you're using lion, some of my
settings notes may differ slightly but the instructions will be the same.

 Hi,

I wonder if this is the Voiceover welcome dialog. Go to voiceover
utilities with VO F8 and under general and see if "Display welcome dialog

when you purchase any apple mac, the system comes installed with OS X and iLife

Re: Selecting files using vo.

2012-04-17 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Stacey,

Usually, when I select contiguous items, I just use shift and arrow keys.
Noncontiguous items are a little tricky.

First, press VO-shift-f3 to turn cursor tracking off. This way, you won't move
your cursor when VO moves. Find each item and press VO-command-spacebar to
select it. Verify your selection by pressing VO-f6. Once you are finished
selecting, toggle cursor tracking back on again with VO-shift-f3, and then
perform whichever actions you need to on the items.

HTH,
Teresa

Re: Mail, unread versus read messages.

2012-04-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Veronica,

It sounds as though the preview pane is still there and the messages are being
opened as you arrow down through them.

How do you read your messages? I read mine by pressing Return, then I close
them with Cmd-w. If VO-j takes you to the body of the messages, then the
preview pane is still there.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Guitar chords

2012-04-17 Thread Tim Hornik
Mike, I just searched for Beginner Guitar on my iPhone and his stuff was
the first app. The name of the app is Beginner Guitar. I also just found
out he has published two new apps for the Blues and Licks. I will be trying
them out later, but feel based on his previous works they will be fine.
Additionally, I encourage those interested in starting to learn Blues, to
check out the box DVD set Marty posted at Guitar Jams. I bought the set and
love it. His teaching style is 80-90% accessible, but most of that
difference will be made up through experience.

@CJ, I am interested in looking into your offer as a guitar teacher. My

Re: ILife Apps

2012-04-17 Thread Chris Blouch
The only thing you would need to buy down the road is any upgrades, if
you think the features/fixes would be worth it. Generally there isn't an
'upgrade price' since the things are bundled for free or cheap to begin
with. While iWorks may have its issues compared to office, you certainly
can't beat the price - $60 for all thee vs. about $180 for the 'home'
version of MS Office. Given that MS Office doesn't work at all with
voiceover it wouldn't even be worth it if it was free.

Re: fs: Intel Xeon W3530 quad-core processor and internal storage

2012-04-17 Thread Chris Blouch
I'm curious about your upgrade. In the past CPU upgrades were kind of
diminishing returns since you then just hit bottlenecks in other parts
of the system, such as RAM, system bus, drive IO and video IO. Are you
doing something that is compute intensive but low bandwidth? Just hoping
you aren't setting expectations too high after your upgrade.

I would also note that a brand new 1TB drive in the box with warranty
etc. is only about $85 with free shipping. So you might find selling
your old drive probably isn't worth it. Maybe just leave it in there as
some scratch space. You have four bays afterall.

Re: Mail, unread versus read messages.

2012-04-17 Thread Veronica Elsea
Okay, you might be right. And in the act of trying, I seem to have
made a mess of mail.

Here's what I have.
When I first open Mail, it says inbox, so many messages, so many
unread. VO says messages table is under the cursor. I can open a
message with enter and VO-J does take me to the text. If I tab from
there, it says message content, row 1 of 1. Tab again and it says
mailboxes table, then I'm back at messages.
And after doing what I thought was the correct directions to disable
the preview pane, from the messages table, VO-left or right arrow
just takes me through the fields, date received, status, etc.
If I stop interacting with the messages table, VO-right arrow takes
me to a horrizontal splitter. Is this the one I use? If I VO-right
from this splitter, it says mail activity, then next is another
horrizontal splitter. Continuing right, I get new mailbox button,
hide mail activity button, mailboxes action button, then back to
message content. Now I can't find the table. I've ended up in funny
menus sometimes too. If I quit mail, I can then come back in and find
my messages table again.
Boy, if someone could help me sort out the mess I've made, I'd sure
appreciate it.
Hey, at least I can send messages this week. I have no idea why it
started working again, but I'm not asking.

Anyway, thanks so much for the help.

Re: That GOD aweful screen!

2012-04-17 Thread Chris Blouch
Sorry about that. I was referring to the overall System preferences, not
the finder preferences. You can reach the System Preferences in a number
of ways. Once is to go to the Apple menu (VO-M and then down-arrow to
System Preferences) or another way is to go to the dock (VO-D) and type
SY which will move focus to the first match of the letters S and Y,
which should be System Preferences, and hit enter or a third way is to
use spotlight by hitting command-space to search for stuff on your
computer and then type System and the first results should be System
Preferences. Probably some other ways as well :)

If you get stuck again just ping back :)

If you VO-right from there you'll find Automatic login, which defaults to Off. You won't be able to
change it because this pane is locked. To unlock you'll have to go to the very end of the window where
you will find a "click the lock to make changes" button. So that and answer the password
prompt. Go back to the automatic login location and you'll find a popup with has choices of
"Off" or one of the accounts on your machine. If you change it to one of the accounts on your

To me, most of the navigation is fairly self-explanatory. You might try some
more specific questions that might make it easier to get help. Is there a

 Hi, Stacey,

Usually, when I select contiguous items, I just use shift and arrow keys.
Noncontiguous items are a little tricky.

First, press VO-shift-f3 to turn cursor tracking off. This way, you won't
move your cursor when VO moves. Find each item and press
VO-command-spacebar to select it. Verify your selection by pressing VO-f6.
Once you are finished selecting, toggle cursor tracking back on again with
VO-shift-f3, and then perform whichever actions you need to on the items.

I'm going to scream, what am I doing wrong!

2012-04-17 Thread Jennifer Perdue
OK, I am trying, again, to reply to one person, however, when I navigate to
message headers then interact with it which gives me the person's name then VO
right arrow to what is hide, then VO left arrow to the from field again, and
then do VO shift M as in Mary.

this idiotic computer won't give me the menu to reply to sender. It won't give
me a menu at all.

there are things that I wouldn't change about this Mac. But right now. I
could smash it into a million peaces.

What on earth am I missing.

Re: I'm going to scream, what am I doing wrong!

2012-04-17 Thread Jim Gatteys
Ah Jennifer I hear the sound of screaming as I write this reply.
Don't give up. I've noticed that the way you are trying to reply doesn't
always work for me either. It works for me if I go over to the subject then
back again, then do vo-shift-m. Then I get the address, copy and whatever else
is on that menu.
It is definitely frustrating but once you find that exact thing you have to do
to make it work for you it will go smoothly.
I'd try going over to the subject once you've interacted then back to the name
you want. I don't know if its a focus issue. Have you tried routing the mouse
to the name you want with vo-command-f5? Just a thought.
Hope this helps.
Jim
P.S. gargle some lemon water for that throat after the screaming is done.

Re: I'm going to scream, what am I doing wrong!

2012-04-17 Thread Tim Kilburn
Jennifer,

I believe that you missing one Interaction step.

• If you VO-right and VO reads "Hide", then go left to the Header area again.
• Interact with that Header area and VO-right past the sender's name to the
Subject.
• Then VO-left back to when you hear the sender's name again.
• At this point, press VO-shift-m to bring up the Contextual menu.

What I believe is happening is that you may be misunderstanding the Header
areas. If VO reads "Message Header Group", then know that you're Interacting
with a "Group", therefore you may need to Interact with an object once again in
order to get to the proper level. In this case, the second Interaction will
take you to the "Message Header Text", and therefore you'll know that you're
within the correct area for the steps outlined above.

Hope this helps to explain and to save your computer from hurling through the
air.

Later...

Using a mouse

2012-04-17 Thread Michael Malarsie
Greetings everyone,
If I plug a mouse into my Macbook is there an option to make the Voice
Over call out what is under the cursor?
Are there any mouse options to mess with at all? I didn't find anything
interesting in Universal Access and just wanted to find out is maybe I was just
missing something.

Yes,

in voiceover utilities under navigation, in the pop up, set the mouse pointer
to move voiceover focus.

Oh! just to add, you don't need to plug in a mouse to do this either. you can
use your trackpad with trackpad commander turned off and get the same result.

Hi,

I was thinking the same thing. In more cases than not, upgrading your
processor is more trouble than what its worth. Won't upgrading the processor
also mean a new heat sync and fan as well? The easiest way to improve
performance is to always upgrade RAM

I was googling around and the upgrade process sounded non-trivial with
acetone used to clean the heat paste off the old heat sinks to re-attach

Ok. Because faster processors generally mean more heat and sometimes a new

Re: facebook question, was Re: selecting files using VO.

2012-04-17 Thread Teresa Cochran
Ah, ok. Well, in the mobile site, you can navigate by links with VO-command-L.
On the full site, you can navigate by headings. each newsfeed heading is a
level 6, so once you get to a newsfeed on heading level 6, you can then either
press VO-command-h or VO-command-M (for same heading number.

You can also use the VO rotor with VO-U, then find the headings with VO
right-arrow. Once you reach the headings area, just press down-arrow to go
through them.

Re: Intel Xeon W3530 quad-core processor and internal storage

2012-04-17 Thread Ricardo Walker
True.

I guess if its going into a 17 inch MBP, 27" iMac or, Mac pro, a new heat sink
is almost guaranteed to fit. Apple only uses a hand full of cases, and only
certain models can support that processor on the board.

 Hi,

I was thinking the same thing. In more cases than not, upgrading your
processor is more trouble than what its worth. Won't upgrading the
processor also mean a new heat sync and fan as well? The easiest way to
improve performance is to always upgrade RAM

 IMO.

Re: Selecting files using vo.

2012-04-17 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I don't find it necessary to turn cursor tracking off. When in the finder, I
just make sure I'm interacting with the browser, pressVO command space on the
item I want to select, and make sure I go to the next item by pressing VO up or
down arrow. Just using the arrows by themselves will deselect whatever you
have selected.in

Re: Using a mouse

2012-04-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Mike,

In VoiceOver Utility, Verbosity category, select the Announcements tab and
check the check box Speak text under mouse after delay. Then set the delay to
zero. When you run one finger over the trackpad, VO will speak what is under
the mouse.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Mail, unread versus read messages.

2012-04-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Veronica,

I'm confused by what you're seeing, too.

When you're on the messages table but not interacting, what happens when you
press VO-Down Arrow? You should find a horizontal splitter and not be able to
go down any further.

Cheers,

Anne
