Hi Paul!
When I've pressed the photo button in Face book there are options to take video
or take picture and another to choose from library!
I do not have any pictures on mine but maybe if you select that option it might
take you to yours! and you can pick from there!

Re: Tips for reading PDF documents on the Mac

2012-04-12 Thread Scott Howell
Kirsten,

I think the problem is simply poorly formatted tables. VO is not designed to
try and reconstruct a table. I am not sure exactly how all this works, but
WIndow-Eyes for example can look at a website that has tables and even when
poorly constructed, (generally missing header tags), those tables can be
navigated as a table. There is some backend process for using the "table mode"
to make this work. Unfortunately there are a lot of very poorly done tables or
processes for building those tables. So, all that to say I do not blame the
screen reading technology so much as blaming the app/person who developed the
table.
I wondered if Fine Reader was accessible on the Mac and if it really provides
anything that Preview cannot. So, will be curious about your experience.

Re: hotmail and Safari

2012-04-12 Thread Steve Holmes
You might look at the macport or homebrew projects as they sport the building
of many unix packages.
I happen to use homebrew here and have built emacspeak to run on my mac.
Haven't tried java or anyh of that but it might be as simple as entering the
command:
brew jave
and it goes out and gets the necessary dependencies and all that. Like I say,
not sure if they have build scripts for java or not. Might give that a look.

RE: Finder Busy Finder Busy with Empty USB Drives!

2012-04-12 Thread Bill Holton
Here's the workaround I use. First, turn off VO and then press command q to
close that finder window. Then press command 2 to get into list mode. For
me this problem seems to mostly happen in column view. Now that you're in
list mode, try again. Let me know if this works. Apple has shown very
little interest in solving this problem.
You can also go to the drive on the main finder window. First, find a file,
any file, and copy it to the clipboard. At the main finder window use the
right click menu to call up the paste command. If you can get any file onto
that drive it will then work fine and you canego from there.
Let me know if either of these works.

Subject: Finder Busy Finder Busy with Empty USB Drives!

I think this is similar to Bill's empty DVD problems but I'm actually
wondering what the solution is when I get into these situations. If I plug
in a USB drive which happens to have no files yet, the finder goes into that
damn busy stuff and I can't get out of it any way, any how. I always end up
turning off the computer and power back up. Is there any other way to get
out of those busy loops? Unplugging the drive did not help the situation. As
soon as I copy a file on to that empty partition, then all is fine. What I
do is go into the terminal and use the cp command to do this. I read Bill's
message about deleting finder settings and then it straitens out for a bit
but obviously, that doesn't sound like a good solution as his problem kept
coming back. If I use Command O to open the drive, I also get the dreaded
"finder busy" crap so How does one get out of this loop when you get caught
in it? I could see this happening every time you stick in a blank USB stick
or SD card or something.

I sure hope Apple gets this serious bug fixed soon.

I'm always interchanging power bricks and they all worked just fine. If
you use a small low-wattage one it will run most laptops but you won't
be able to charge your battery at the same time. Last time I needed to
buy one was when my wife found one of the kids sucking on the plug. He
was unharmed but the power supply never worked right after that. At the

hi, the apple charger is pretty much a standard unit and there are no

an option or two open to you is ebay for a refurb or used pack or even an

time, if the guy ever did much with it besides keeping it around to
sell. When I took it home to my parents' place once, I never noticed
that the charger got in front of the car door, and some bracket snapped
off. My dad was able to super glue it back together and it works here,
but I might be getting a work experience where I might need to move it
around from one outlet to another since it only goes about 90 minutes in
Windows, and maybe a little more in Snow Leopard. From what I've read, a
new one of these costs around $80 and may not work, depending if my
machine successfully took a certain firmware update. Is there cheaper
places to get one like the original one that I have so I don't find
myself in a situation that a different kind doesn't charge the battery?

Thanks.

2012-04-12 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Okay okay. I downloaded version 3 and installed it. I now have lost all my
Acapela voices and so, I have written to the Origen instroments place where I
bought the voices from and asked them for my license keys back.

I thought this was supposed to be a free upgrade.

Part of what makes this a little tricky is the fact that my e-mail address has
changed since I did the version 2 voices.

Re: Finder Busy Finder Busy with Empty USB Drives!

2012-04-12 Thread Scott Howell
Bill,

Command-w closes the window. I am not sure that it would be fair to say APple
is not interested in fixing the issue. There is a good chance that they are
working the issue on their end and has not said anything or they simply do not
have sufficient information to determine the underlying cause. I am
experiencing an issue with my iPHone that I am pretty sure is or has affected
others and I have been working with APple on/off in regards to the problem.
THey have not resolved the problem yet, but I do not believe this is because
they are not interested in resolving the problem. I can appreciate that at
times it seems as though you are being ignored, but on the other hand I do not
think this is always the case.

You might look at http://www.macsales.com which is Other WOrld Computing (OWC)

2012-04-12 Thread Brent Harding
Which place would be cheaper and faster to get it fixed, the place Apple
recommends, assuming they still work on Apple stuff and their listing isn't
outdated, or the other place I had boot camp done initially where he claims
he knows how to repair the hardware stuff as well as I devices people drop,
spill stuff in, etc. Having just paid for the protection plan for my phone
to get express replacement, I don't know if I'd do that again given I need
more info to get the broke one picked up.

the firmware update will resolve power support. however, there are 2
different power packs available. these have different wattages and therefore
a lower wattage will not help you with both power and charge cycles, in fact
this can cause damage to the battery and power inverter of the laptop.

in regards the keyboard, I have been checking up on my technical databases
with apple and the only way to resolve your problem is a keyboard
replacement. as the key in question has been damaged in removal and a mount
point is missing.

sorry but that's how it is. it's not like buying a windows laptop, undo a
bracket and the keyboard dismounts, the macbook is a different kettle of
fish all together and requires attention to service. if you were in the UK,
I would be willing to service this for you but as you're in the USA, you
would need to find a techie that's willing to udnertake the work as a favour
with parts.

Hi Chris,

Brent's correct that the older MacBook models from 2007-2008 require a
firmware update in order to charge from the recent model power bricks
(with the L-shaped connectors). The affected models are:

• MacBook (13-inch Late 2007)
• MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2008)
• MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008)
• MacBook (13-inch, Early 2008)
• MacBook (13-inch, Late 2008)

Here's the link to the Apple Knowledge base article that appeared in
October 2010:
• Portables: L-shaped MagSafe power adapter does not charge computer and
LED indicator light does not illuminate:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3499

There should be a link in that document to the appropriate firmware
download. I'd just apply the firmware download, and then you can use any
laptop power brick that delivers sufficient power. E-bay is probably a
good source, as you say.

the system serial can be found through going to about this mac in the

Re: got Infovox version 3 and lost all my voices

2012-04-12 Thread Henry D. Hollithron
Good Day:

When I did the upgrade, there was a second window available from the
Window chooser for the voice manager which told me to redeem the activation
codes. It had found the activation codes for the older InfoVox language packs
which I had, and I had to activate each one by pressing the "activate" button
next to each code. For the first activation, it asked me to create an account
with my name and email address, which could be edited. After that, the process
became quite simple. Then, it was a simple matter of going to the tools menu
and selecting "Install all licensed voices". They appear to have done some
updates on the existing voices.

it seems that I have run up against this brick wall. so I started
troubleshooting why hotmail.com causes my browser to crash.
according to the error reporting console in webkit, hotmail.com makes
several calls to javascripts that aren't included with Apple's JRE. this
means that some or all of hotmail may be inaccessible at random times. I
even disabled javascript altogether and found that the entire hotmail site
displayed as a blank scroll area. What this means is that hotmail isn't
going to be very usable for any future versions of javascript on OS X.

also, I try to hit the contact us link and the browser immediately crashes
 here.

what oracle (owners of sun java) needs to do is enforce some standard that
requires that everyone use supported calls to javascripts. I am so bloody
tired of having to deal with apple centric JRE, microsoft specific java
code and the version that I can get to work in linux (which is a full
version).it seems to me that everyone who uses java code needs to be
operating on the same standards. this would eliminate a lot of problems,
especially for us OS X screen reader users. to give you guys an idea how
bad it is, I can't even give site feedback because their javascript opens
a frame that locks you in a loop trying to fill out the required text
 fields.

Good Day:

When I did the upgrade, there was a second window available from the Window
chooser for the voice manager which told me to
redeem the activation codes. It had found the activation codes for the older
InfoVox language packs which I had, and I had to
activate each one by pressing the "activate" button next to each code. For the
first activation, it asked me to create an
account with my name and email address, which could be edited. After that, the
process became quite simple. Then, it was a
simple matter of going to the tools menu and selecting "Install all licensed
voices". They appear to have done some updates
on the existing voices.

Re: Creating a list of all the headings and links

2012-04-12 Thread Tim Kilburn
Yes, definitely. Press VO-u to bring up the Web Router. Once it is up, use
left and right arrows to navigate between Headings, Links, Tables, Form
Controls etc. Use up and down arrows to navigate within a given category.
Type the first couple letters of what you wish to find to quickly restrict the
list. For example, type "g-m" on the oogle page would quickly locate the
"GMail" link, press return and focus will move to that link but does not
activate it until you press VO-space.

HTH.

Re: Uploading a video on YouTube

2012-04-12 Thread Michael Malarsie
Greetings,
In Quicktime you have two options. a Movie recording is using the
camera that faces you and the other option is a screen recording where the
video will be of your computer screen.
If you do a screen recording after pressing the record button you have
to click anywhere to actually start the recording process. I just turn my
trackpad commander off and after pressing record click that and it starts. To
stop a screen recording press control, option, and escape.
A movie recording is a little different. As soon as you press the
record button it starts recording. When you are done just press the button
again. You will have voice over talked at the start and end of the videos yet
though so you may have to edit that out.
I use iMovie to upload to YouTube. If you try it from Quicktime it will
not work. There are audio/video sync issues and the upload will fail every
time. At least it did for me. these issues don't happen in iMovie.
After I record a video in Quicktime I export it to my desktop then open
iMovie and inport the video there. You can edit if you want but if not then
just go to the Menu bar and find the share option.
It will give you a lot of options like mobile me, itunes, YouTube, ect.
This all sounds a lot more complex than it really is. Once you
try it it will make more sense. Let me know if you have more questions. Email
me off list at michael.malar...@gmail.com

Take care

A Question for NLS Web Braille Subscribers

2012-04-12 Thread M. Taylor
Hello,

While I can find my username and password, I cannot, it seems, find the URL
in order to search and/or download NLS Web Titles.

The URL I have is loc.gov/nls/Braille, however, this does not, as it once
did about 9 years ago (smile), land me on a page from which I can serch for
web Braille titles.

Yes, it's true, I have not been to the site in about 8 years or so.

Anyway, I am hoping that someone can give me a current URL for Web Braille
titles.

Thank you,

Hi all,

You need to put a / character at the end of the URL
http://www.loc.gov/nls/braille/

That should get you where you want to be.
Look for the online catalog link.

Re: iTunes library question

2012-04-12 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi,
Do you have all your music in the default library folder? DO you have iTunes
set to make copies of everything you add to your library? To avoid problems I
would delete the songs you do not want out of your library first. This will
prompt iTunes to ask if you want it to put the music in trash or keep it in
place. This only happens if they are in the default iTunes library location. In
other words, if you have added some music that is in a random folder to iTunes
and delete it from your library it will only delete the shortcut to it and the
copy it made if you have that setting on.

Hope this is not too confusing.

Good luck,

Ioana

OT iPad buying options in the US.

Hi all sorry for being a little off topic. I'm going over to the US soon

I buy a unlocked (not spesific to any network) one cash directly from a
Apple store, or do they only sell them on contract through Verizon and
AT&T? I need one which takes a micro sim card and know Verizon works on
CDMA so know not to get a verizon one. Sorry if this question is stupid, I

for that anymore and is generally frowned upon as a waste of resources. I doubt
that Hotmail uses any Java in their pages and you can verify this by turning it
off in the Java Preferences utility. I suspect Hotmail, like most other web
apps, is just a boatload of javascript.

That said, I did try logging into a hotmail account and while I found the
navigation and UI painful, Safari didn't crash on me. This was on my laptop
running 10.7 with all the updates. Might be something else throwing things for
a loop. I did get a Safari Busy for about 2 seconds when I first went to the
inbox but that might be because the test account had a lot of spam in it.

troubleshooting why hotmail.com causes my browser to crash.
according to the error reporting console in webkit, hotmail.com makes several
calls to javascripts that aren't included with Apple's JRE. this means that
some or all of hotmail may be inaccessible at random times. I even disabled
javascript altogether and found that the entire hotmail site displayed as a
blank scroll area. What this means is that hotmail isn't going to be very
usable for any future versions of javascript on OS X.

also, I try to hit the contact us link and the browser immediately crashes here.

what oracle (owners of sun java) needs to do is enforce some standard that
requires that everyone use supported calls to javascripts. I am so bloody tired
of having to deal with apple centric JRE, microsoft specific java code and the
version that I can get to work in linux (which is a full version).it seems to
me that everyone who uses java code needs to be operating on the same
standards. this would eliminate a lot of problems, especially for us OS X
screen reader users. to give you guys an idea how bad it is, I can't even give
site feedback because their javascript opens a frame that locks you in a loop
trying to fill out the required text fields.

Speakable Items Interferes With Energy Saver Preferences

Hi. Does anyone use the speakable items speech recognition tool? If so, maybe
you can help me. I have my computer to respond to a keyword and sometimes I
accidentally say it or the computer says it. Anyway once speakable items is
triggered, I notice that it interferes with my energy saver preferences. For
example, after it's triggered, my screen doesn't dim at the specific time it's
supposed to. As a matter of fact, it doesn't dim at all until I either shut
down or restart. Is there a way to fix this?

discovering cool custom verbosity options

2012-04-12 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
HI all,

I am playing around with speech verbosity settings and found an interesting way
to customize order of info being spoken by VO. I got checkboxes to say
unchecked or checked before the actual info of the checkbox. Some controls are
very obscure to me like drawers or list markers but it is worth playing around
with this I think.
Does anyone know of a more in-depth explanation of each control in the custom
verbosity table?

Still would love to get VO to be less verbose when selecting items in items
select mode. Any ideas of how or if this is possible would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

Ioana

Also, be aware that Web Braille is gradually switching over to the NLS Bard

redeem the activation codes. It had found the activation codes for the older
InfoVox language packs which I had, and I had to

Hello Ray,

I think the new version of Infovox iVox works differently from the previous
ones. Have a look in your Applications folder for
one called Infovox iVox Voice Manager.app.

This is what you use to enable the voices.

Okay okay. I downloaded version 3 and installed it. I now have lost all my

I thought this was supposed to be a free upgrade.

Part of what makes this a little tricky is the fact that my e-mail address has
changed since I did the version 2 voices.

Re: Mirroring a Folder

2012-04-12 Thread Chris Blouch
I used to do this for my itunes folder with rsync in the terminal but
then I got tired or it and just copied my whole folder over to the
external drive. There is an article on doing this with rsync here:

http://extrafuture.com/2007/06/07/how-to-back-up-your-itunes-music-with-rsync-on-mac-os-x/

Nice thing with rsync is it just copies over whatever is newer so after
the first round it doesn't take nearly as long. rsync is also network
aware so you could copy stuff to a volume on any other computer that
supports rsync, which would be any recent OSX machine.

Could you also accomplish this just with Time Machine?

Re: Finder Busy Finder Busy with Empty USB Drives!

2012-04-12 Thread Esther
Hi Steve,

Not sure that this helps to answer your question, but when I attach USB memory
sticks to my Mac, in order to prevent the system from trying to start up
Spotlight indexing of the drive when I connect, I go to System Preferences >
Spotlight and select the "Privacy" tab. VoiceOver will say "Prevent Spotlight
from searching these locations: Click the Add button, or drag a folder or disk
into the list below." Navigate to the "Add" button and press it (VO-Space),
then select your USB drive in the dialog window. You can use any of the Finder
keyboard shortcuts to navigate here. For example, Command-Shift-C will set
your default directory to your computer, and you can navigate to the list of
mounted drives or devices to select your USB memory stick, and then press
return to register the selection. You can also use the Command-Shift-G "go to
folder" shortcut here if you know the name of your drive. I find that my Lexar
memory stick gets mounted as:
/Volumes/Lexar
and my Crucial memory stick gets mounted as:
/Volumes/Crucial
So I could also have specified my Lexar memory stick in the dialog window that
appears after pressing the "add" button by pressing Command-Shift-G and then
typing into the text box:
/Volumes/Crucial
(that's a slash character, followed by the word "Volumes", followed by another
slash character, followed by the word "Crucial"; Finder is not case sensitive,
so you do not have to capitalize the "V" in "Volumes" and the "C" in "Crucial"
as you would if you were typing commands in Terminal.)

I'm not sure that these settings made through the always stick, although I
haven't had problems with activity from Spotlight indexing once I've applied
this setup. I am sure that this works if you use the Terminal app instead:
1. Command-Shift-U in Finder to go to Utilities
2. Press "t" to navigate to "Terminal"
3. Command-Down arrow or Command-O to open Terminal
4. Type (exactly):
sudo mdutil -i off /Volumes/Crucial
and press return to execute this. You should substitute the path to your USB
drive, with it's name. It may not be named for the manufacturer, especially if
it is not a "brand" memory stick. I think you may be prompted for your Admin
password to execute this command. Steve, I think you have linux background,
and may be comfortable with this. I can usually Command-Tab to Terminal to
execute commands.

Let us know if any of this helps. (People who are not familiar with command
line usage might want to skip using the instructions for Terminal.)

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
