Using Flex pointer in Garage Band?

2012-02-12 Thread Victor Tsaran
Hello GB users,
I think Flex pointers are not accessible to us in GB but I thought I'd ask here
in case someone figured work-arounds. Anyone?
Flex pointers allow the user to stretch and compress a particular region, both
MIDI and audio.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Vic

Re: Web Creation and Voice Over

2012-02-12 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi,
This might sound totally stupid, and it probably is, since i was the one who
actually talked about the program, but since it was quite long ago since i used
the program, the answer is no, i have forgotten how to use it. One thing i can
tell you though and it's a very good tip i got from one of my bosses was learn
the program by looking at its menus. Go to the menu bar with vo+m and look what
menus you have and what's in the menus, look at the different choises. That way
you learn how to work a program and you also learn its keyboard shortcuts at
the same time. Also voiceover-arrow around the windows to see what's there.
That's the only thing i can say and i'm sorry to be of so little help.

iPads in education - introducing kids to iPads for first time

2012-02-12 Thread Someral
Just a quick question; about to test educational use of iPad with some
children in Gloucestershire, UK.

All visually impaired but also some with other physical and cognitive
impairments. Their age range is from 5 to 12. All of this is with
teacher or parent in attendance.

We were using iPads specifically to test an app called OverLay (which
allows us to integrate swell paper maps and diagrams with the
touchscreen audio) but I would like to know if there is any advice for
introducing children with low vision to iPads?

We have iPds set up and VoiceOver active but just want them to be able
to get comfortable with iPad in most enjoyable way.

Any experience, positive and negative, of using iPads the first time
would be a help.

Thanks,

Alastair

Re: Removing podcasts from my IPhone 4s

2012-02-12 Thread Garth Humphreys
Hi Paul

I can't direct you to written instructions but I'll try to put down exactly
what I do.

By the way, I don't commonly use this gesture with podcasts preferring to use a
third party podcast catcher. the gesture is a standard IOS one and can be used
in a number of apps where there is a list of items. You can use it in some text
editors to delete particular files.

I checked that it did still work in the current release of IOS 5 with podcasts
and it does. I could only get it to work about one in three. As I said it's a
bit tricky. Anyway here we go.

Bring up the list of podcast episodes from which you wish to delete an episode.

Run your finger down the screen on the left hand side. You should find the
button to go back to the list of subscribed podcasts at the top. Then the
search field and then the list of episodes.

Stop when you get to the one you want to delete. The real point of doing this
is to find where physically on the screen the podcast episode title is located.

Now lift your finger a little and do the pass through gesture. This is where
you double tap but you hold your finger on the screen after the second tap
rather than lifting it. As you hold your finger still you will hear a rising
three tone sound. As soon as you hear this, quickly swipe your finger to the
right. Do not lift your finger before doing the swipe and be as careful as
possible to move straight across the screen. I think this is the difficult
part. As far as I can tell you need to travel very close to exactly parallel to
the top of the phone. Imagine you are drawing a line through the written
podcast episode title.

Now if it worked there will be a button to confirm the deletion. The button
will appear after the episode you are trying to delete. You can swipe around to
find this if you like. In swipe order it should be directly after the episode
in question.

You can just double tap on this button to confirm the delete.

I hope this works for you.

The pass through gesture is the same one you would use to put your device into
edit mode when moving apps and deleting them.

Good luck.

I would recommend getting a third party podcast app like Downcast. You won't
have to worry about all this then. That said the pass through and cross out
gesture is probably one worth learning. You never know when it will be useful.
You can check out a «quick review I did for the Downcast app at

Printing an invoice from the Apple store?

2012-02-12 Thread Doug Lawlor
Hello List:
How do I go about printing an invoice from the Apple store? I log into my
account and successfully see my orders. I click on the Print Invoice link for
an order but nothing happens. I get no dialogs or anything. Actually what I
want to do is to generate a PDF of the invoice from the Printer dialog. I have
no printer attached to this machine. I know how to generate the PDF but just
can't get a dialog coming up when I activate the Print Invoice link.

Thanks in advance,

Doug

Re: Printing an invoice from the Apple store?

2012-02-12 Thread John Panarese
Two things that come to mind. I know that I have had situations where the
printer dialog does not come up to take VO focus. Did you try doing a Window
Chooser check with VO-F2 twice?

Also, when you placed the order, Apple sends you an invoice via email. I
usually print mine when I receive the email, as it's just easier.

PDFPen

2012-02-12 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys.
It was suggested to me that I get a program from the AP Store called PDFpen.
After looking at it, I got the pro version because the other didn't seem to
have what I wanted.

Now this program seems to be a better PDF reader than Preview. However, I can't
seem to get it to do the one thing I wanted, which what every sighted person
can do, fill out the form I called up.

I was kind of afraid of this when I got it. Has anybody used this program
(which seems to work fine with VoiceOver if you want to create a PDF file.)

Gigi, who is beginning to hate PDF files and who is having a bad accessibility
day

Re: Super frustrated trying to read table

2012-02-12 Thread Esther
Hi Christine,
What I found for the tassimo site is that when you add an item to your cart,
there is a "Just added to your cart" window that comes up that only contains
details about the item you just added. It doesn't show up as a second window
if you check with window chooser menu (VO-F2). So if there are other items in
your cart that you are trying to remove, you won't be able to view them until
you use one of the buttons associated with that window to exit it. The only
clue that this window is up is that VoiceOver says "Close" just after
announcing "Just added to your cart" once you press the button to add an item
to your cart. This is why I used item chooser menu to try to navigate to other
elements in that window -- specifically, to try to at least close it. Typing
"just" after using VO-I lists items which include "Just added to your cart".
Continuing by typing "but" after that refines that list to give you the items
that are buttons for the "Just added to the cart" window.

If you want to get to the full cart, you need to navigate to the "Just added to
your cart, checkout button" and press it (VO-Space). Can you find a button
like that on your screen? Until you press that button you will not be able to
view or modify any items in your shopping cart apart from the item you just
added to your cart. Pressing that button should take you to the screen with
the full shopping cart contents. You should be able to navigate the table and
check boxes to remove items that you don't want. The total may update
correctly if you simply remove items. However, if you change the quantity of
items in the table for the full shopping cart, you won't be able to get them to
update unless you press the unlabeled button for updating the shopping cart.
It will be on the row of the table after your last shopping cart item, and
VoiceOver will says something about "spans 5 columns button column 1" after
announcing the row.

HTH. By the way, I didn't check by changing my settings, but I'm using DOM
mode and have set all my cursors tracking, and have mouse moves VoiceOver
cursor under the navigation options of VoiceOver utility. This isn't my usual
set up -- especially the mouse moves VO cursor. I just got through checking
the "Find My iPhone" page under Safari 5.1.2 so was trying different settings
to improve the navigation experience.

Cheers,

Esther

Recommendation for extended keyboard.

2012-02-12 Thread Frank Tom
I didn't get a response to what's wrong with the extended keyboard my friend
got, so, I will ask another question.

What is the best extended keyboard out there, either wireless or usb, for the
blind mac user.

I personally like the bluetooth keyboard that came with my five year old I Mac.
Unfortunately, Apple doesn't make this one any more.

He needs something with some heft to it so it gives good, tactile feedback. To
help myself, I stick little bumpers on the G and H keys and the F4 and F8 keys
to make finding the home row easier.

What do you use?

Re: Recommendation for extended keyboard.

2012-02-12 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I had that Apple USB keyboard with the num pad and had no problem with the
function keys. Could he just have gotten a defective keyboard?

Re: Recommendation for extended keyboard.

2012-02-12 Thread Esther
Hi Tom,

I suspect that you didn't get a response to your post about the extended
keyboard either because others haven't experienced problems with the F keys or
because many of the list readers are not typing on extended keyboards.

I've only typed extensively on Mac laptop keyboards, and I don't have a problem
with the lower profile, chiclet key design, so this recommendation is based on
matching your preferences and background to the product in responding to your
request for "the best extended keyboard out there, either wireless or usb, for
the blind mac user."

Try checking out the Matias Tactile Pro 3 keyboard:

This is a full-size USB keyboard that uses ALPS keyboard switches. It's the
third generation of this keyboard, and if you liked the feel of the older Apple
Bluetooth keyboard you will probably like this design. Even better, since you
mentioned in previous posts that you can easily get to Small Dog Electronics,
you can go there to buy/try out the keyboard. There's a review posted on the
Small Dog from someone who bought this as a replacement keyboard for his
mother, after she found the keys on Apple Extended Keyboard (that he loved) to
be too flat and too quiet. Here's a quote:

"This keyboard is very similar to the original Apple Keyboard that came with my
first eMac. The keys are easily distinguishable, and the entire keyboard is
built very sturdy. While the click of the keys is not nearly as loud as a
manual type writer, you definitely know when each key is hit. There are also
three non-powered USB ports located directly on the keyboard, which is nice for
peripherals or the flash drives she swaps photographs on with my Aunts and
Uncles. I also know Matias as a reasonable company that stands behind their
products and honors their warranties if anything goes wrong with the keyboard
down the line. This is especially important when spending $139.99 on a
keyboard."

For a more extensive and detailed review of this keyboard, check out the
TidBITS article by Adam Engst:
• "Matias Tactile Pro 3 Keyboard Returns to the Alps" 18 August 2010:

I'll excerpt a few bits from the intro and the end of the article. The author
got the first version of the Matias Tactile Pro keyboard when it first appeared
in 2004.

Over six years ago, I reviewed the original Tactile Pro keyboard from Matias,
and I think my article's title summarized things nicely - "The Majestic Alps
and the King of Keyboards" (29 March 2004). Put simply, the Tactile Pro was the
best keyboard I had used in a very long time, in the genre of loud, clicky
keyboards with great tactile feel. I don't run any software that records how
many keystrokes I type, but it's a lot, and I had basically typed that keyboard
into the ground. In fact, I typed two of them into oblivion, since Edgar Matias
had initially sent me a prototype without a case, and after a key failed on the
production unit that I reviewed, I shoehorned the prototype into the production
unit's case and used it for another few years.

If you know you like clicky keyboards with that old-school feel, and you're in
the market for a new one, you won't go wrong with the Tactile Pro 3. It's not
cheap as keyboards go, but there's a reason that cheap keyboards rely on cheap
rubber dome keyswitches instead of the Tactile Pro's precision Alps
keyswitches. The keyboard has a 1-year warranty, and from what I've heard from
customers, Matias has been great about replacing defective keyboards.

Matias is a Canadian company, but this keyboard is sold internationally. You
can order directly from them and get keyboards in the US, UK, German, or
Japanese layout. You can also order from Amazon and other sources (like Small
Dog Electronics), or you can check the resellers link on their web page to find
local distributor agents across the world.

Matias also makes a folding Bluetooth keyboard with NumPad and extended keys.
However, because it is an extended keyboard, when folded it's about the same
size as the Apple Wireless Keyboard. This also does not have keys with large
travel, since it has to fold flat, but it does support recent Mac computers and
iOS devices. MacAlly makes a BTKey keyboard that is full-sized and that
supports recent Mac OS X versions and iOS devices. This is a slightly older
model (available when the first generation iPads were released, and tested for
use with those devices), and the keys have larger travel than the current Apple
Bluetooth keyboards. I'd check on the compatibility of F-key support for media
functions. Again, I haven't used these keyboards personally and have only read
reviews. Don't confuse the MacAlly BTKey full-sized keyboard with their newer
BTKey mini keyboard. As with the Matias products, you can find the MacAlly
keyboards on Amazon, and I believe Small Dog Electronics may also stock this.

HTH. Cheers,

Est

extensions, Chromevox and MetalMouth, do not work in parts of the browser

Major Finder Problem Caused by Dropbox!

2012-02-12 Thread Steve Holmes
I just installed Dropbox this afternoon on my new mac mini. I thought
it installed OK and it even synced up my files from the host but now I
constantly get "Finder busy" all the time whenever I open *ANY* window
in the finder! At this point, the Finder is completely useless while
the Dropbox app is running. If I go into my login preferences and
remove Dropbox from the startup list and log back in, I can use the
finder like always. As soon as I launch Dropbox from the
applications folder or allow it to run at login, Finder goes to hell
in a handbag!

Has anyone else experienced thins kind of thing?

Note, I am using a mac mini without a monitor connected. I surely
hope this isn't also going to be a problem like the auto starting of
VO when no monitor is connected.

Hey, I really want to use Dropbox but this performance hit is a show
stopper for me.

Possible bug in Lion

2012-02-12 Thread Bill Holton
Hi.

To save precious USB connections on my Mac Mini I used a usb hub to connect
both my mouse and my PC style keyboard to my Mini. Both the mouse and
keyboard work fine in this configuration, the only problem is every time I
restart the computer I have to remap the Windows/Alt keys to the
Option/command layout that is more traditional because Lion seems to be
losing these settings.

RE: Possible bug in Lion

2012-02-12 Thread Bill Holton
Yes, mini has four usb ports, so keyboard, mouse, tv tuner card, USB
harddrive, Superdrive, oops, that's five. Seven, if you count the fact theTV
card won't work without a direct connection and it blocks two ports because
they designed it for the laptops, not the mini. Sigh, I am really getting
sick of a lot of Apple's s&**t.

Major problem for six months they can't solve, now they don't even
acknowledge me.

Re: Possible bug in Lion

2012-02-12 Thread Steve Holmes
I have a similar problem when I reboot, I have to turn my function
keys back on to software instead of the default hardware. this is
when I use a blue tooth keyboard. I don't think it was a problem with
my wired keyboard but when I started using an Apple blue tooth
keyboard, this started happening. Anyone else notice this? I would
like to write an applescript maybe that can force this back on for me
if they won't fix it.

Re: Possible bug in Lion

2012-02-12 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I understand your frustration although it is fairly common practice, at least
in my experience, for primary I/O devices like a keyboard to be directly
connected. In your situation, I suggest you plug the keyboard into the Mini,
the mouse into the keyboard, the Tuner into its required two ports, thus
leaving one for your USB hub. Your external HD shouldn't have any issues
connecting through a hub. Give it a try and see if your keyboard settings are
retained.

Re: Possible bug in Lion

2012-02-12 Thread Steve Holmes
Another thing that would free up at least one port would be to try
using a blue tooth keyboard. I don't know what kind of mouse you're
using but I believe the magic trackpad is a blue tooth, isn't it? if
so, try that and you can free up two ports. Just a thought.
