Hi,

Just like to add to this, If using a macbook, turning on screen curtain is not
a substitute for turning down screen brightness in regards to battery
conservation. If all you do is turn on screen curtain, your display is still
blazing away just with well, a black curtain over it. lol.

 Hello Everyone,

After posting my last message to the list regarding the increase in heat
generated on my MBP since installing Lion and the definite lessening of
battery life, I took a closer look at my MBP and discovered what I hope
 will
prove to be useful to you.

F Y I: Until yesterday, I was running Lion on an external FireWire drive
and did not notice the increase in heat since the computer is always
 sitting
on my desk when running Lion. Additionally, when I have the FireWire
connected, I also have the power cable connected.

Anyway, and I have confirmed this twice on my MBP and I called a friend who
installed Lion this morning and she confirmed the same, said same being:
The backlight on the MBP keyboard is set to on when Lion is first
 installed.

After I turn the backlight off/or to its lowest setting, the increase in
 heat went away.

So, I recommend that those of you noticing a change in heat/battery drain
confirm that your MBP keyboard backlights are set as they were before
 upgrading/installing Lion.

Subject: Lion clean install

Hello,
So I decided to take the plunge today and do a clean installation of
Lion.
I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to install Lion. In fact, it
was so easy the whole process took less than an hour. VoiceOver spoke to
me the entire time.
So far, I've been using it for about 2 hours. I do feel that a clean
installation of Lion does make it run a bit more smoothly. I don't think
it's faster, but just more smooth.

There are 3 small anomalies that I thought were a bit odd.
First, during the installation process, it asked me to set the time
zone. This was normal. But what was not normal was the fact that it has
my city preselected. I just have to click "continue".
Second, after installation, I just assumed I need to setup my Bluetooth
keyboard to work. No, it is already connected and working. How's this
possible?
I'm quite certain I had erased the hard drive and did a clean
installation. It's interesting that of all the settings I had, it
remembered the time zone and my Bluetooth keyboard. Why not my VoiceOver
settings, or Finder settings?
The third thing is probably more of a problem with Lion. When making
certain changes in System Preferences, you have to click the Lock button
to allow you to make changes. When you do this, another dialog window
pops up asking you to authenticate the administrator account. For some
reason, when this window pops up, VoiceOver will say that the
authentication windows is busy and it will stay busy for at least 30
seconds, maybe an entire minute. I find this very bizarre. Finally, when
it is ready, I can type my user name and password.

Anyways, over all, it has been a pleasant surprise so far.

Except for the last 5 minutes. As I was typing this email, Mail quit
unexpectedly. I've never seen this happen before. But then, when I
reopened Mail, what a surprise, it saved a draft of my email so I didn't
lose anything.
For those who are having lots of issues with Lion, especially when the
user experience is not as good or better than Snow Leopard, I recommend
considering a clean install.
It is so easy to install. For iTunes, I just copied the music folder to
an external drive. After installing Lion, I copied it back and my entire
library is there. Can't get any easier than that.

Right,

Its not possible to turn off the display as it were, without locking the
device. I guess they figured, why would anyone want such a feature. You would
have a lot of paniced sighted folks. lol. On the Mac, restarting your macbook
will turn back up screen brightness. But there's no intuitive way to restart
an iPhone without sight unless your a voiceover user.

Re: Accessible Electronic OCR?

2011-08-12 Thread Teresa Cochran
Thanks for all the help and suggestions, guys! I'd actually been mulling over
the purchase of Abbyy Fine Reader and finally bit the bullet today. It made a
beautiful OCR of a book-length pdf file. Yay. Worth the wait and the price. :)

Thanks,
Teresa

Re: Lion clean install

2011-08-12 Thread Scott Howell
If you have a new machine, upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion should not be
any problem. The only reason really to do a "clean install" is if you have a
lot of crud from either prior upgrades or you have an SL installation that has
not been running perfectly. Other reasons may exist, but typically upgrading is
not necessary.

RE: Lion clean install

2011-08-12 Thread Missy Hoppe
That's pretty much what I was told by Apple, too. My macbook is only about 3
months old now, and SL was running on it
beautifully. My lion upgrade went smoothly enough, but there were just too many
weird things going on, so I decided to go
back to SL until some lion bugs get worked out. There's still a part of me that
wonders if a clean install of Lion would have
worked better, though, so I'm tempted to try a clean install from the dvd I
made just to see if it solves my midi issue and
some other weirdness. I figure if it doesn't make any difference, I'm not out
anything but a lot of time; I can just go back
to my CCC backup of sl, and everything would immediately go back to normal. I
just have to decide if I'm prepared to spend a
couple hours trying something that may or may not solve any of my lion
weirdness. I almost wish I could go to a mac store
with a flash drive and play a midi on a machine that is using a clean install
of lion; then I'd know if attempting a clean
install would be worth the time and effort.

Hi,

I just checked and, midi files are still played at a very low volume. BTW,
have you told Apple about this? I'm assuming not to many people are listening
to midi files with quicklook so this issue might have flown under their radar.

I have tried this and I would be surprised if you notice any real difference. I
would say that if your going to do this, you might as well try on an external
disk, so your not wasting a lot of time.

2011-08-12 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hi! Thank you very much for checking on that; it saved me a few hours. (smile)
I contacted apple about the midi playback
problem, and have a case number, but so far, they're stumped, and nobody has
any answers. I know that listening to midis
isn't a huge priorty, but it's something I really enjoy, so I'm really
reluctant to give Lion another chance until I can get
them working properly.
Apart from Garage band, which for me at least is way to complex for simple
listening, are you aware of another alternative I
could try for midi playback? I tried vlc media player under SL, but it didn't
seem to have native midi support and I couldn't
quite figure out the instructions for installing a soundfont, although I'd be
perfectly happy to do that if it would actually
work.
In the mean time, I'll just stick with SL for now, and periodically check for
lion updates using my external drive that
boots into lion. It's an adequate sollution for now.
Thanks again, and I hope that you're having a wonderful day!

Hi,

I just checked and, midi files are still played at a very low volume. BTW,
have you told Apple about this? I'm assuming not
to many people are listening to midi files with quicklook so this issue might
have flown under their radar.

Subject: How To View Only Upcoming or Active Appointments In Mac OS X Lion's
Calendar Application

The following was just posted to the Candle Shore BLOG:

How To View Only Upcoming or Active Appointments In Mac OS X Lion's Calendar
Application

  Hello Everyone,

One of my favorite features in Microsoft Outlook is the ability to view only
upcoming (active) appointments in the calendar.

Apparently, Apple does not think I need this feature in the latest version of
iCal. (grimace)

While there are certainly some very fine third-party applications that will
allow me to see only upcoming appointments, I am of the opinion that less is
better; therefore, I resist installing such applications unless absolutely
necessary. Besides, there is no guaranty that said third-party applications,
for which I may have to pay a premium, will be VoiceOver (Apple's software
screen reading solution for the blind and low vision) accessible.

Enter the Mac OS X Lion Dashboard of which I am growing quite fond, and all
its marvelous, and for the most part free, widgets.

It is with such a widget that we can view only upcoming or active
appointments.

Oh, keep in mind that iCal refers to appointments as events.

  Let's get started.

  1.

Download and install a free Mac OS Dashboard widget called iCal Events. Its
description is as follows:

iCal Events... Face the day! Always know what's next on your schedule using
iCal Events. iCal Events displays upcoming events from multiple iCal calendars
in a beautiful, resizable widget for Dashboard. You can see up to two weeks of
upcoming events in the same widget without needing to open iCal.

  2.

After installing the widget, I suggest that you close the web browser used to
download the widget.

  3.

Now go to the Dashboard and see the widget in action. I suggest using the
key combination [Option+LeftArrow] to quickly jump to the Dashboard. Please
note that you can change the number of days shown in the widget by clicking on
the Info button.

  Enjoy,

  Mark

 Hello Everyone,

After posting my last message to the list regarding the increase in
 heat
generated on my MBP since installing Lion and the definite lessening of
battery life, I took a closer look at my MBP and discovered what I
 hope will
prove to be useful to you.

F Y I: Until yesterday, I was running Lion on an external FireWire
 drive
and did not notice the increase in heat since the computer is always
 sitting
on my desk when running Lion. Additionally, when I have the FireWire
connected, I also have the power cable connected.

Anyway, and I have confirmed this twice on my MBP and I called a
 friend who
installed Lion this morning and she confirmed the same, said same
 being:
The backlight on the MBP keyboard is set to on when Lion is first
 installed.

Now I want to be clear, I keep my keyboard backlight off and so it was
 when
I upgraded to Lion. However, when I looked closely at my keyboard,
 today, I
discovered that while it was dimmed, it was not set as it had been
 before
 the upgrade.

After I turn the backlight off/or to its lowest setting, the increase
 in
 heat went away.

So, I recommend that those of you noticing a change in heat/battery
 drain
confirm that your MBP keyboard backlights are set as they were before
 upgrading/installing Lion.

F5 and F6 decrease and increase keyboard backlight, respectively.

this is the behavior of the MBP and plastic macbook, that the air would be the

It doesn't on the macbook pro 2011 either. I wish it would save my preference

Sidebar and other Scroll Area Issues in Lion

2011-08-12 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, folk,

I've noticed in Lion that the Sidebar in Finder doesn't seem to track
first-letter navigation, making it necessary to VO-down-arrow through it.
Anyone else notice this?

Also, the latest ITunes sources area doesn't seem to be a list or table
anymore. When I press m for music, for example, I can verify that it goes
there, but VO doesn't report it.

Is this a new kind of control? I'm thinking of exploring the keyboard
navigation of controls in System Preferences to see if I can find a work-around.

Other ideas?

Teresa

Re: Sidebar and other Scroll Area Issues in Lion

2011-08-12 Thread Barry Hadder
That is correct.
It appears that keyboard navigation in the side bar is gone in lion. As
with other areas in lion, it seems that the kb focus doesn't track with vo.

Itunes 10.4 is something of a reck in my opinion. I don't strictly mean how it
works with VO either Although, it is probably what has suffered the most.

Lion's Calendar Application

The following was just posted to the Candle Shore BLOG:

How To View Only Upcoming or Active Appointments In Mac OS X Lion’s
Calendar Application

  Hello Everyone,

One of my favorite features in Microsoft Outlook is the ability to view
only upcoming (active) appointments in the calendar.

Apparently, Apple does not think I need this feature in the latest
version of iCal. (grimace)

While there are certainly some very fine third-party applications that
will allow me to see only upcoming appointments, I am of the opinion that less
is better; therefore, I resist installing such applications unless absolutely
necessary. Besides, there is no guaranty that said third-party applications,
for which I may have to pay a premium, will be VoiceOver (Apple’s software
screen reading solution for the blind and low vision) accessible.

Enter the Mac OS X Lion Dashboard of which I am growing quite fond, and
all its marvelous, and for the most part free, widgets.

It is with such a widget that we can view only upcoming or active
appointments.

Oh, keep in mind that iCal refers to appointments as events.

  Let’s get started.

  1.
Download and install a free Mac OS Dashboard widget called iCal Events.
Its description is as follows:
iCal Events... Face the day! Always know what's next on your schedule
using iCal Events. iCal Events displays upcoming events from multiple iCal
calendars in a beautiful, resizable widget for Dashboard. You can see up to two
weeks of upcoming events in the same widget without needing to open iCal.

  2.
After installing the widget, I suggest that you close the web browser
used to download the widget.

  3.
Now go to the Dashboard and see the widget in action. I suggest using
the key combination [Option+LeftArrow] to quickly jump to the Dashboard.
Please note that you can change the number of days shown in the widget by
clicking on the Info button.

  Enjoy,

  Mark

Same with the screen. I keep brightness at 0 and also enable the

Oh yes that's a new issue. I discovered it also and a few friends of mine as
well. And to be very frank: that issue is much worse then the focus issue
before. To read a book like that seems to me impossible.

The only way to fix it is to write to
accessibil...@apple.com
and to show that it is important to fix that.

Another issue is still not fixed: tables in text documents. That also doesn't
work. Apple seems not to realize that this is a basic functionality. Really
annoying.

All the best

Re: Weird Sound Loss When I Plug or Unplug Headphones

2011-08-12 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
I wasn't talking about losing Voice Over, even though that happens too. I meant
sounds in general. For example, I have internet radio playing in my headphones.
Then when I unplug the headphones, I have no sound whatsoever until I reboot. I
don't think I have dust in the jack as Ricardo suggested, like I said this
behaviour only started in Lion.

Anybody have an idea how to keep certain keyboard settings in system

Thanks good people.

Apple Bluetooth keyboard and iPhone question

Hi.
Can someone tell me how to use the Apple Bluetooth keyboard to do a press of
the Home button? I thought it was done via the escape button, but that only
takes you out of current menus, like the double finger scrub. Thanks.

Scott,

I have always been able to use the arrow keys to move between items in the side

Viewing Music by Album or artist

2011-08-12 Thread Paul Hunt
Hello everyone. In ITunes 10.3 and earlier, if I activated the browser I
could choose to view my music by album, artist etc and my music would be
nicely grouped. I would like to be able to do this in ITunes 10.4. Now, I
have 500 songs in a table listed alphabetically. Any ideas on how to set up
ITunes to group music by album or artist?

Thanks so much and I hope you have a nice weekend..

Go to your window chooser list with vo+F2-F2, then you should be able to bring

Hello everyone. In ITunes 10.3 and earlier, if I activated the browser I
could choose to view my music by album, artist etc and my music would be nicely
grouped. I would like to be able to do this in ITunes 10.4. Now, I have 500
songs in a table listed alphabetically. Any ideas on how to set up ITunes to
group music by album or artist?

Thanks so much and I hope you have a nice weekend..

Re: Weird Sound Loss When I Plug or Unplug Headphones

2011-08-12 Thread Bart Bunting
Hi Everyone,

I can confirm that I have also seen this behaviour.

I have a macbook pro and Lion.

I to have found no way to restore sound after it goes silent. The
laptop appears to be functioning perfectly apart from sound not working.

I have also confirmed that the sound is neither muted or volume turned
down.

Reboot was the only fix I have found.

Probably happened 4 or 5 times now.

Kind regards

Bart

Re: versioning in text edit

2011-08-12 Thread Marc Workman
Jessica,

That's right. The version browsing controls do not come up automatically for
me either. I feel like it used to when I first played around with versioning
after Lion first came out, but perhaps not. At any rate, you can find the
vertical slider byVO spacing on the "Browse all Versions" button, and then
after you are taken back to the main window, bring up the window chooser with
VO F2 twice. You will then want to look for "Version Browsing Controls", and
there you will find the vertical slider.

I'm not sure about using VO space to get to the Doc. I use VO D to get to the
Doc.

I don't have Pages, but I know versioning and auto saving can be included in
applications by developers, so I would be surprised if it weren't in Pages.

HTH

Marc doesn't come up for me either.

Well, Scott, b my guest. It really wasn't any big deal. It worked about like
any other situation in which I would move the vo cursor and the keyboard would
track. Probably a little more flaky than most situations, but nine times out
of ten it would work. I should also say that I'm speaking of the dialogs that
come up when you need to brows for a file to open, but it was probably the same
in Finder proper as the sidebar was the same control in both cases.

Nope, we're on two different pages here. I was referring to the FInder's

deleting sections of audio in Amadeus pro?

2011-08-12 Thread Courtney Curran
Hi,
I have an audio file that I'd like to delete sections out of. But I'm not sure
how to select portions to delete, and I'm also not sure how to delete the
portions of the audio file? Is this even accessible with voiceover? I have the
previous version of Amadeus pro, I haven't gotten the payed upgrade yet.
Thanks,
Courtney

Chris, I see my albums but don't see the songs in each of them.

How can I see the albums with their songs?

Thanks so much.

Subject: Viewing Music by Album or artist

Hello everyone. In ITunes 10.3 and earlier, if I activated the browser I
could choose to view my music by album, artist etc and my music would be
nicely grouped. I would like to be able to do this in ITunes 10.4. Now, I
have 500 songs in a table listed alphabetically. Any ideas on how to set up
ITunes to group music by album or artist?

Thanks so much and I hope you have a nice weekend..

Go to your window chooser list with vo+F2-F2, then you should be able to
bring up the widget of your choice.

Re: Viewing Music by Album or artist

2011-08-12 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Can you vo+space on the album, then interact with the table, and then vo+right
arrow over to the name column? then just vo+down arrow through each track.
It's annoying I know, but that's what you have to do. Apple kind a broke the
accessibility slightly in that area in ITunes 10.4. Same goes with the sources
list. You have to interact, then vo+up and down in order to hear things as you
move. It's downright annoying, but for now it's what we have.

Re: Sidebar and other Scroll Area Issues in Lion

2011-08-12 Thread larry
I have also noticed issues in navigating the sidebar. I recently
downloaded a program to the downloads folder and now can't find the file.
Sighted assistance tells me that the downloads folder is indicated in the
sidebar. Is there anyway I can find my downloads folder and then get to the
file I need. I didn't have this prowlem with the previous operating system.
I could be missing something.

Thanks much for your help.

Scott,

I have always been able to use the arrow keys to move between items in the
side bar. Also, I have always been able to press a letter key to jump to
an item as the original post mentioned.

Itunes 10.4 is something of a reck in my opinion. I don't strictly mean
how it works with VO either Although, it is probably what has suffered
the most.

Also, the latest ITunes sources area doesn't seem to be a list or table
anymore. When I press m for music, for example, I can verify that it
goes there, but VO doesn't report it.

Is this a new kind of control? I'm thinking of exploring the keyboard
navigation of controls in System Preferences to see if I can find a
work-around.

Other ideas?

Hi,

Your Downloads folder should be in your home directory unless you or someone
moved it. Just hit command-shift-h and you should be able to find it.

keyboard commander feature in Lion

2011-08-12 Thread Chris Snyder
Hi folks,
In lion, it doesn't seem like I can tell keyboard commander to make a command
that will open a folder in finder.
Did Apple remove the open finder item option in Keyboard Commander?
