If you have a new machine, upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion should not be any problem. The only reason really to do a "clean install" is if you have a lot of crud from either prior upgrades or you have an SL installation that has not been running perfectly. Other reasons may exist, but typically upgrading is not necessary.
