Re: Bluetooth on Brailliant 40 Display

2011-03-27 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Scott,

A slight correction. The 3 key is indeed used to cycle from the top of the
menu structure down, but the 4 key is used to go in the opposite direction.
The 1 key definitely does not move anywhere on the Connect 24.

Exactly.

Although voiceover is telling you that dropbox has no windows, there is
indeed a window. It says somethings like Welcome to Dropbox. And then the

Printers and scanners

2011-03-27 Thread Joseph Norton
Hi listers:

I am amazed at the simplicity of my Mac.

I have a Cannon MX 320 printer/scanner.

When I first connected to my Windows PC, I had to install this driver disk
which required mousing around just to get it installed and it took several
minutes just to install.

When I plugged the thing into this Mac Mini, all I had to do was hit "Print"
and away it went.

What about the scanner portion? I tried using it with Openbook, but, it didn't
seem to see it.

I'm running VMWare Fusion. Do I need to connect the device directly and use
the driver disk for the scanner?

Thanks!

Currently running headless!

Blue tooth headset

2011-03-27 Thread louie
Hi all,
I just got a new bluetooth headset. it's the M100 by plantronics. The headset
when turned on tells me that power is on and it tells me the talk time that is
left before it binds with my Mac mini. When the power is turned off the headset
tells me power off. These announcement are spoken in a pleasant female voice.
After the binding process is completed a dialog comes up telling me
BluetoothAudioAgent dialog alert Would you like to use the Bluetooth
“1xxPlantronics (Mono)” as your audio device? Use This Device default button.
If you click the default button all of the audio is heard through the head set.
The headset tells you that you are connected. When you turn off the headset the
default system audio is restored. I have tried skype and a VOIP client using
the headset and it works well. The cost is 59 bucks from the apple store.

Turning off all-caps spelling

2011-03-27 Thread Victor Tsaran
Hello guys,
I reckon the answer to my question would be "this is currently
impossible", but I thought I'd risk asking the list anyway...
Oftentimes I come across the heading or a line of text where each
letter is capitalized. In these instances Voiceover spells each letter
which ,as you can imagine, is not only annoying but also
time-consuming.
Is there any trick or work-around where I can force Voiceover to treat
all-caps as lowercase or turn this feature off altogether?

Thanks for any tips.
Best,
Vic

I looked up this plantronics m100, but it looks like it does not include a2dp.
I understood that one needed that in order to hear voiceover. Perhaps I missed
it, but I did look on two different websites of vendors who carry this product,
and the description for the m100 didn't reference a2dp.

Are two drives alike?

2011-03-27 Thread Geoff Waaler
Greetings all,

Recently a friend found a 500 GB Passport at the Apple store for twice what I
paid for my 1TB drive last year. It said that it was for MacOS, but since my
MBP has no trouble finding or reading my drive, I didn't see this deal as a
bargin exactly.

This afternoon I searched the US Amazon site for the string: "passport tb" and
noticed that the prices for the "mac" drives are consistently higher than their
"windows" counterparts. Two examples follow:

Western Digital My Passport SE for Mac 1 TB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard
Drive (Silver) $117.27
vs:
Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1 TB USB 3.0/2.0 Ultra Portable
External Hard Drive (Black) (Windows) $89.99

I'm not certain whether these products are identical. The color varies, as
does the fact that the more expensive drive's description emits the word
"essential", and does not support USB 3.0 (which may not be applicable for
MACOS yet anyway).

My older drive came with software that I never use -- is this the only
difference between the two drive models? If so, would I care about the
software in the MacOS platform? I assume I could se either drive with
timeMachine and to store files?

TIA for any input and best regards.
Geoff

Two unrelated inquiries: Garage band accessibility and unlabeled Flash Player buttons on Web site

2011-03-27 Thread Christine Grassman
Hello, folks. I've got two today:
1. I was told that one could make ringtones from one's music using Garage Band.
I launched Garage Band, selected "ringtones" and discovered that is as far as I
can apparently go. Apparently, according to sighted assistance, I can move
around the screen, but VO says nothing except the first layer of choices. Is
there something which can be done about this? Is anything else accessible in
Garage Band, or is it a lost cause?
Second, I was checking out a Web site where one can take Irish vocabulary and
grammar lessons. There is a demo, so I went to it. One needs Adobe Flash
Player, so I downloaded and installed that. However, the "play" buttons for
the audio, though visible, are not labeled to tell VO to direct me where to
click. Is this a lost cause, or is there a way to use VO commands to search the
screen for such buttons? Thanks for any help.
The Web site, in the event someone is curious to take a look, is

Hi,
Select a word document, and hit cmd-i to open the Get Info window. There is an
item to pick which application opens the file, and a "Change All" button next
to it which will make all subsequent Word files open via the same program.
Hope this helps,

Can't help with the garage band issue since I don't use it, as far as flash
goes, unfortunately, it's not accessible on the mac, Adobe has been unwilling
to make flash accessible on the mac. Hopefully, in time, html5 will replace
flash. The html5 player on youtube, for example, is very accessible.

Re: Turning off all-caps spelling

2011-03-27 Thread Kevin Shaw
when Voiceover reads caps as individual letters, it thinks the caps form an
acronym. Weird, especially 'cause there are vowels in the headings.

I haven't found a workaround, but for common text, I'd put the word in the
pronunciation dictionary and mark it as case sensitive.

Re: Are two drives alike?

2011-03-27 Thread Bryan Jones
Hey Geoff,

Both of your examples will work fine with a Mac. The non-Mac version is NTFS
and will need to be formatted as HFS+ or whatever format you want. The Mac
version does come with some mac backup software, and there's mention of disk
encryption, but if it's just going to be used to house time machine backups etc
either drive will work fine. If you still wanted to try the WD mac software,
maybe you would have an option to download it from western digital's site after
the fact. Just a thought.

Interestingly, on Amazon the Mac-specific version seems to only be available in
silver while the non-Mac version comes in Silver, Black, Metallic Blue and
Metallic Red, and prices for the last three range from $112 to $120 US. I guess
the black NTFS version is the bargain of this particular bunch.

FYI in case you weren't already aware of this -- If you're searching Amazon and
want to be able to check prices and availability of an item that happens to be
available in various sizes, colors, etc, such as clothing or hard drives, you
might want to try Amazon's accessible site at www.amazon.com/access. Amazon's
regular website must use javascript or something like that to present the
different size, color and price options within an item description, and I have
a heck of a time trying to navigate that with VO. I find that the accessible
site makes it much easier to select from the various options to find out about
pricing and availability.

Bryan

Re: Printers and scanners

2011-03-27 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Joseph,
I would connect the device and give it to your Windows VM. You would need the
driver disk, I imagine. Windows, virtualized or not, isn't smart enough to be
able to use all functions of all devices without manufacturer support. Of
course, the same is true of macs, but it might sometimes seem to not be so. At
any rate, yes, use the disk, as long as it works with your virtualized Windows
version of course.
Best,
Zack.

Any VO limitations or concerns? Praises?

2011-03-27 Thread Johchi

Hi folks,
I'm not a Mac user yet, but I am learning sooo much by gtleaning from
this wonderful

list.
My question has to do with convincing the PA State agency that getting
VO and the
MacBook for me is a better choice then the traditional Windows screen
reader setup.

But I want to be completely honest with you:
Since I'm not currently an Apple products user, I really don't know if
the Mac is
really the best way for me to go. I'm an educated professional piano
technician
who is also a musician keyboardist. But the State won't purchase
anything for me
based on personal musical ambition. I have joined this list and the
AiPhone list
in order to hear for myself just how accessible the apple platform
really is. I
must say that I am quite amazed beyond words on how much blind folks are
able to
accomplish on the touch screen iPhone. So needless to say, I am looking
forward
to the iPhone 5 when it comes out, and I'll probably be getting
something in an iPhone
for myself at that time. But anyway, getting back to my situation with
the State

getting me some new computer equipment:
Their immediate response to my interests for having a Mac was negative.
Why? Because
the guy hired to do my equipment evaluation has had zero experience
using a Mac and
so he told the agency that he felt that it was in his opinion that it
was a bad idea
to get me a Mac. I immediately came back with saying to them that it
was my right
to make my own choice as to what equipment I would like to have use of.
And that
my choice of equipment was being discriminated against based on their
lack of knowledge
and understanding of the subject. They then quickly changed their tune
and gave
me another equipment evaluator to work with me who they say is familiar
with the
Mac platform and said that they would have to go with his
recommendations thereafter.

I have yet to meet with this second person.
Consequently, in the meantime I am needing to get as much concrete
evidence that
VO on a Mac is perfectly viable and that everything I need to do on the
MacBook is
accessible, or better yet, even better accessible then the Windows /
Microsoft platform

using the latest WE screen reader alone..
So I need to locate information supporting the ability for the blind to
be able to
use the MacBook successfully. Please be so kind as to briefly speak to
this matter
with either your own testimonies of your own success and support, or
negatatives
and concerns concerning the use of the Apple Mac platform for the blind
computer

user.
Thanks much,

Hi:
Well,
You could point them to the 500+ users on both list serves, and show them the
list archives. You can go to www.applevis.com. Personally, I'll never go back
to Windows. I have been a Mac user for 11 months, and can do everything on a
Mac that I was doing on Windows.

Re: Two unrelated inquiries: Garage band accessibility and unlabeled Flash Player buttons on Web site

2011-03-27 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Christine -- Regarding the Irish lessons website, do you have the Click To
Flash extension installed in Safari on your Mac? The reason I ask is that I
just tried the demo on the site and didn't seem to have any problems, so
perhaps it might be my clicktoflash extension doing it's thing. Just a guess.
When I clicked the "Demo" link and navigated down the page I found a list of
lessons, the first of which was labeled "Ribbon dot free dot PNG, Your first
bite of Irish Gaelic: Numbers." I pressed VO Spacebar and was presented with
lesson one, which was in text format and totally accessible. I'm not sure if
I'm missing something though. Are these lessons supposed to be videos or just
text as this one appears to be?

If you've already successfully installed the flash player, you can install the
Click To Flash extension from within Safari by going to the Safari Menu /
Safari Extensions Gallery and then searching for "clicktoflash" no quotes or
spaces. Install it, exit and re-launch Safari, and then try the site again.

Bryan

Re: Any VO limitations or concerns? Praises?

2011-03-27 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Johnny,

Welcome to the List! Perhaps you could help us to help you by giving us a list
of the specific tasks you need to be able to perform with a computer. While the
Mac is good, it's not the best tool for everything and there are some things
that just are not possible on the Mac. Microsoft Office, for example, is not
accessible to VoiceOver on the Mac. There are alternative word processing and
spreadsheet programs that are *mostly* accessible on the Mac, but if MS Office
is a must have, you need to weigh your options carefully. In as few words as
possible, tell us exactly what you are using now, what you absolutely need to
use going forward, and I'm sure you will get plenty of responses.

Cheers,
Bryan

Re: Any VO limitations or concerns? Praises?

2011-03-27 Thread Chantelle Griffiths
Hi Johnny,

I can totally see where you're coming from regarding your Mac and VO queries,
but it's difficult to say, in your particular situation, whether the Mac would
be the right choice for you because we don't know what you want to use it for.
For example, if you're wanting to be able to write and read musical notation,
the Mac might not be the best choice because, as far as I'm aware, there isn't
any accessible musical notation creation software available for the Mac yet. I
used to use Sibelius under Windows with Jaws and have seen nothing to compare
on the Mac side yet, though I'm sure that a similar solution won't be far away.
However, if you want to do things such as use email, browse the internet and do
basic word processing, (by basic I mean without a lot of complicated
formatting,) the Mac might be a viable choice for you. You can also use
spreadsheets and create presentations with little trouble.

I believe for basic music creation, (rather than notation,) there are some good
choices, such as using Garageband, as one example. As I understand it, the more
advanced Logic and Pro Tools have a way to go in terms of accessibility. I am
currently using Garageband and have found it does most of what I want it to do
in my own musical endeavours for the moment.

There are accessible finance management programs available, and you are able to
read most common file types with ease, including PDF. The calendar and address
book are accessible, as is iTunes and a host of third party applications. There
are also a growing number of podcasts and other resources available to you that
demonstrate the various aspects of the Mac and VoiceOver.

VoiceOver itself is very customisable and you can accomplish tasks in a variety
of different ways. As an experienced Jaws user, I have found there are little
things that VO can't do for me personally in the way I was used to, but those
are convenience things more than functional limitations and I have found easy
alternatives and work-arounds that work well for me. Coming from a Windows
background, the switch to the Mac can be a bit of a learning curve, and I
personally can't compare one with the other as they are vastly different. But
from my own experience, switching to the Mac has been one of the best decisions
I've made from a technology point of view. Certainly the initial cost may be a
bit higher when purchasing the Mac you want, but as VoiceOver is built into the
operating system, the costs of accessibility are much less on an ongoing basis.

I've only really touched on the music-related issues I see, being a musician
and composer myself, and there are undoubtedly other questions or concerns not
raised here that others will have different opinions on, but I focussed
primarily on the music side of things as that was one aspect you mentioned you
were interested in. If you're looking for something for a work or study
situation, you might also want to consider the time you'll need to invest in
learning the Mac and VoiceOver and whether that will impact your situation. If
it's more for personal use, that is less of an issue, but the considerations
lie more in what else you want to be able to do with it, e.g. social
networking, DVD ripping, communicating with friends and family etc and whether
you're able to do those things comfortably on a Mac. I use a variety of
different programs for the above, including skype, Hand Brake, instant
messaging and twitter clients in conjunction with Apple Mail and Safari, and
have found that I can accomplish all I used to do in Windows and more, and in
some cases, in a much more efficient manner. Also, Apple and a lot of app
developers are often extremely approachable if you have accessibility concerns
with particular apps or suggestions for VoiceOver improvement, and developers
will often work with you to enhance their apps for VO users where they can.

It's also worth bearing in mind that there are ways to access Windows on a Mac,
either by dual booting your system like I do with Windows running separately,
or through virtualisation software which will still enable you to use Windows
programs if you need to. I only really use Windows now for audio editing with
Sound Forge, and that's by choice at the moment rather than limitations on the
Mac side, and occasionally for viewing word documents that have complex
formatting that VO misses.

I hope this helps and that I haven't confused you.

Cheers,
Chantelle.

hold down the option key and press the up or down arrow to get to the top or

Re: Any VO limitations or concerns? Praises?

2011-03-27 Thread Johchi

Hi Brian,

First thanks for the kind welcome.

Well, my life is pretty simple. As a piano tuner, I need a straight
forward database program, - which there is no real solution for screen
reader users in windows to date. A simple checking/accounting program.
In Windows there is a good check book program called Money Talks. I'm
wondering if there is a Mac version of this program. Anyway, I don't
use a spreadsheet much except for the schedule I get from my supervisor
where I work part time at the VA Hospital here. Email is of course a
must have along with the internet. Lastly, in what I would really use
daily is a daily planner and or calendar. These last two items are also
not an viable solution in Windows except for Outlook Express's calendar
which I don't use because I don't use Outlook Express at all. If I
think about anything else I will let you all know.

Incidentally, because I am a musician, I do use a windows program called
Quick Windows Sequencer, (QWS). Is anyone on the list familiar with
this program? Is there a simalar program for the Mac? Now I know that
you can also run a virtual windows on the Mac that will accommidate
these Windows based programs I do use, but at this time, I am only
interested in what we as blind folks can and cannot do on the Mac Apple
platform.

Thanks again,

Johnny

Re: Drop Box

2011-03-27 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

The status menu is not accessible with voiceover with installed 3rd party apps.
Their is a work around for this though. Problem is, in the latest version of
dropbox, they have some how managed to make the preferences window totally
inaccessible with voiceover once you've used the work around to access the
dropbox menu from the status bar. :(. Its a let down but, not a complete
disaster. Dropbox isn't one of those apps where one really needs to constantly
be making changes to its settings.

Yes, it's working as it should.

Can't reply to messages on the list

2011-03-27 Thread Simon Cavendish
Hello,

Over the past couple of days, when I try to reply to a message posted on the
list, my reply bounces with the information that I may not be allowed to post
to the group or that the group may not exist. Does anyone ever have a problem
like this?

Simon

Frustration With Groups and Address Book

2011-03-27 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, folk,

Ok, I give up, and that isn't easy for me to do. When I try to create a new
group in Address book, there is no edit field for the name, and it always gets
named "untitled." I've also tried selecting a number of noncontiguous addresses
in all contacts. No problem there. When I go into the file menu, the "add to
group using selection" option is dimmed! I've verified several times that these
five addresses are highlighted. So now I'm absolutely stumped. Can anyone
please help??!!

TIA,
Teresa

Re: Frustration With Groups and Address Book

2011-03-27 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi Teresa,

that's a bit tricky because VoiceOver doesn't work properly in this case.

So do the following:
1. Interact with the group table and set your VO cursor on the new group.
2. Route the mouse cursor to VoiceOver cursor by pressing CTRL + Option + CMD +
F5.
3. Turn VoiceOver off by pressing CMD F5.
4. Press Enter.
6. Type the new group name.
7. Press Enter again. (I'm not sure but that might be not necessary.)
8. Turn VoiceOver on again.
That's it.

All the best

Beautiful. Thanks, Jurgen. That worked. Now I'll see if I can put some
addresses in my new group.

I selected the addresses I wanted to go to my new group, copied them, then
pasted them in. No problem. Thanks again for the assist, Jurgen.
