This game sounds awesome! Hopefully everything will work out, although perhaps a very gentle email every couple of months might not go a miss just to see how / if things are working out. Question about searching from within folders
I thought I was opening a container of rice pudding, but instead opened a container of sour cream. I knew I had some recipes on my Mac that contained sour cream, so, not wanting to waste the sour cream, thought I'd bring them up and find one but just cannot figure out how to do it. My recipes are all in a folder called recipes in my documents folder. I first opened my recipes folder, then used option-F to bring up the find dialog and typed in sour cream in the search box, but I can't figure out how to make it just search the recipes folder and not the whole entire hard drive. I know how to do it in Windows, but not sure on the Mac side. Any help would be most gratefully appreciated. Thanks in advance. Re: Question about searching from within folders
Hi Carolyn. Actually, what I was hoping was that it could search the contents of the recipes in a certain folder for this one ingredient. In some recipes, sour cream isn't in the file name itself, so was hoping I could get it to search the contents. I could do this on Windows quite easily, so am hoping for a way to do it on Mac, or maybe a program that I could download that will do this for me. Thanks so much for your help. New to the iphon intrested in opinions and have a question or two.
Hello everyone, I have been learning my iphone for the last day or two. I am using the keyboard in the touch and then tap with another finger to choose an item. Is this the best way that people have found to type? Or have people found that the drag and release method to be better? If so I cannot for the life of me find where that is changed. Could someone tell me how to change the setting? I saw on the list that one can lock the screen, is there a reason that one would want to and why? Can someone repost that setting as well? I saved it however I cannot find it. Now. I have also saw on the list how to change from archiving gmail message to deleting them, I saved that as well, however I cannot find that post either. Can you tell me how? Is there a way to keep the mail application running in the background and switch to other applications or just always have it collecting messages? Thank you for your help. b my opinion and observations. I am a service connected vet and the VA has spent a lot of money on me for adaptive technology. I sit here and learn how to use this device and I am amazed that a company has not taken this approach until now. We have had to endure technology that looks like it was developed in soviet Russia for so many years. In fact we still have devices that look and operate this way and cost money that one only shakes their head in disgust. With this device I can operate it totally independent of anyones assistance. I plugged it into my computer and I did not have to do any setup, it just worked. I was syncing with my address book in minutes. The speech is whip lash fast and responsive. I was using an HTC 4200, when I got it it was considered fast. The speech delay was awful and navigation was painful. I have a device that is a very powerful PDA and could be so much more, however it cost around 6200. and the company will not open the environment for development. I have been pa rousing the app store and I can replace every application pick up a braille display and still not reach that cost. Please keep in mind the apps will differ a bit, however in most cases they are superior. I was told by a friend that if one buys an app and it is not accessible you can go to the mac store and they will refund your purchase. I certain do not see the adaptive technology company doing that when we discover that we cannot accomplish that task that we had intended for the machine to do. I could go on and on but this will get old quickly. Thank you all for your help. Scott -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Question about searching from within folders
1. Open the folder 2. Hit command-option F to put the cursor in the find selector 3. Enter Sour cream 4. Stop Interacting with the tool bar 5. Hit VO-Right three times 6. You should be on a radio button that says "This Mac" 7. One more VO-RIght and you will be on recipes. Hit this radio button 8. Now continue until you find the standard Finder sub-windows... Non english layouts in VoiceOver search
Hi. Using Windows and Jaws i frequently press "Ctrl+f" to find necessary word on a page. I know, the same feature exists in Voice Over search, "VO+f", but once i press this combination i cann't switch between languages to choose an other one. VoiceOver says that this combination is not supported here, once i switch the needed language before this combination i cann't call search feature because combinations in Mac OS X work only in english layout. Re: New to the iphon intrested in opinions and have a question or two.
Hi, That's interesting. I use the same method when typing, where I keep one finger on the screen, stop when I reach the letter I want, and just tap the phone with another finger. If you want to change the typing mode, when you are in a message, change the rotor to the left until it says "typing mode." Now if you flick down, it will toggle between "standard typing" and "touch typing." "Touch typing" is the setting where the key is entered when your finger is lifted from it. Yes, you can lock the screen. It is on the top of the phone, to the right of the headphone jack. The phone by default locks automatically after one minute, but I disabled that setting. Check out the screen lock setting under general in settings. If you want to delete mail instead of archive, go to Setting > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Gmail > Archive Messages. If you double tap archive messages, it will turn it off. I agree that the iPhone is amazing. I've never seen any device that has been so accessible. It seems that as a rule, things that are made for blind people are (1) really expensive and (2) use proprietary formats, so they can't interface with other devices very well. Re: New to the iphon intrested in opinions and have a question or two.
1. I prefer touch typing, and I suspect most users do, though I'm sure there are those that prefer the standard method. To switch to touch typing: use the roter to select typing method. Put two fingers on the screen and rotate them either clockwise or counterclockwise until you hear voiceover say typing method. Lift your two fingers, and then swipe up or down with a single finger until you hear VO say touch typing. You are now using touch typing. Note that certain keys, e.g., shift, delete, return, etc, will still require you to select them using the standard method. 2. I keep the orientation locked all the time. The main reason is that I don't like VO to interupt and tell me that it has switched orientations whenever I sit down or when the phone shifts while in my pocket. I also have never found a need to use landscape mode. To lock orientation: press the home button twice to go to the app switcher. Use three fingers to swipe in a horizontal motion from left to right. Flick around until you find the lock orientation changes button. Double tap that button. You've now locked the orientation. 3. I don't use gmail on the phone so cannot help here. Lastly, I only mention this in case you're not aware. You can search the archives to find posts you may have discarded. I used to keep every post that I thought might come in handy some time down the road. Now I delete them knowing that if I have a related question, I can go to the archives and find the answer. To get to the archives, just do a google search for the viphone googlegroup. I use these so often that I have bookmarked them. Then I go to the site, type in my search terms, and can usually find what I'm looking for. It can some times be difficult to find specific things, but I also often end up finding things I wasn't particularly looking for. I've had my eye on the iPhone since shortly after getting a mac, and as anyone following me on twitter could tell you I kept a close eye on any rumors about when it would get to Verizon. Strangely, now that Verizon has finally made it official, I'm suddenly not sure. The idea of adding another $30 to my bill for a smartphone data plan is a little hard to swallow. From what I can tell, the iPod touch can run all of the same apps, and I'm satisfied with a phone that places calls and does text messaging. Of course the touch can only use wifi, but if I'm away from a wifi connection, I'm probably quite busy doing something and don't need those distractions anyway. From what I have been able to gather, the phone has a far better camera, which is only compelling if there is a great OCR app available to use it with. More important is that the iPOD doesn't appear to have GPS functionality. One would hope that standard bluetooth GPS receivers would work with the touch and allow the use of apps such as Navigon. If not, it would seem odd if there wasn't a GPS receiver among the hundreds of add-ons designed specifically for the iPOD touch. Does anyone know if this is possible? Re: Non english layouts in VoiceOver search
Hello Az, I'm afraid I don't understand what you're doing. I use both the British English and the French keyboard layout with no trouble at all. Are you using a layout that has a completely different character set such as greek or Russian? If so, I'll try to look into your problem. Re: New to the iphon intrested in opinions and have a question or two.
Here Here Scott! There has been a definite movement towards more off the shelf technology recently and this can only be a good thing for our community. Apple really is a good example of accessibility done well. I hope Apple and others go with this company policy and put real pressure on the freedom scientifics and similar of the world. What's reasonable, who's definition of language? Why does your definition superseed mine? Why do prudes always want reasonable when their beliefs aren't and use some sort of artificial moral high ground to brow beat others in to submission? What if I objected to the word piano because I had a bad Piano experience as a child and expected you to be reasonable and not use the word piano? If this is acceptable then where does that logic end? At no time did anyone post anything that violated the FCC rules for over the air transmition. Even though I think the FCC is a bunch of stufed suits that seems like a fairly reasonable template and anyone who objects to content that fits with in that template is an old fuddy duddy of the highest order. Heh Here's a brilliant idea with a lot of historical backing. Instead of silencing someone which is a very common practice in the blind community lists especially why not use that delete key that's located in the upper right of your keyboard? Nobody loses in that situation. You don't get your pretty little sensibilities hurt and nobody loses their right to express themselves. Live and let live, turn the other cheek, all that mumbo jumbo. Re: bad language was Re: =What the Verizon phone means for Apple
You areIn a hello,I don't normally comment on things on this list. However I am compelled to comment on this. Let's face it folks the other 75% unemployment rate in the United States. Bad language scares potential employers period so that is not mistaken that there is no possibility of misinterpretation as the list moderator has said we don't know who's reading this. Let me also tell you that lists like this are archived in many different places. When you go to look for employment employers look at this list if there's bad language you can cost people jobs and that only 30% of blind Americans working in this country I implore you to please do not use inappropriate and nonprofessional language. Because it will cost somebody a job and I don't think that the participants and listless want to be having somebody on SSI SSP I and other government support programs for the rest of their lives simply because somebody doesn't know how to treat people with common respect and refrain from inappropriate language. In short I agree with the moderator, let's knock it off. To say that this thread disturbs me in many different ways, would be an understatement. Let's move on. I'm not a moderator, but if we're interested in all getting out there, and getting meaningful positions of employment for those of us were not working, using the target language is imperative. Thank you very much for reading this. PS, I am using dictation software. As my tagline says some words they actually come out and appropriately. However I think that you can get the inference of what I am saying. I will not comment any further on this subject. Re: New to the iphon intrested in opinions and have a question or two.
Hello Scott F: You raise some very valid points. And we're making accessibility progress faster than ever before. I started out as a split-typist as you are now. Then Touch came along, and I find it much quicker. When you're somewhere that has a texting field, you can perform a roter gesture, (like turning an imaginary dial on the screen) Then flick your finger I think up, or perhaps across to find typing mode. Select touchtyping twith a double tapo try that . way. To change from archiving Google message to deleting them, go to settings, then mail. Select your gmail account, and underneath the account name, you'll find the account name, followed by mail, (toggle on and off), calendar, notes and then archive: another toggle. Turn archive off and you'll have regular delete available. Finally, Orientation lock is to stop the phone from sensing when you turn it to a landscape, (like a book) position. It reorients the screen according to how it perceives your needs. This can be annoying when you're trying for exanple to write while in a car.:) So, if you want to lock it, double tap the home button to bring up app switcher. Take 3 fingers and flick across the screen to the right. which will bring you to page 2. Then flick with one finger Now flick right with one finger. It'll say .lock orientation changes, or unlock orientation changes. Hth and happy iPhoning.:) Carolyn H On Jan 12, 2011, at 8:57 AM, Scott Ford wrote: > Hello everyone, > I have been learning my iphone for the last day or two. Hi Scott: I just reread your post. I thought you meant lock the orietnation in portrait mode. If you meant the other, pardon. Also, I believe what you want is in settings under mail. Turn on push notification, which is a toggle. It may result in slightly poorer battery life. Carolyn On Jan 12, 2011, at 10:26 AM, Brandon Olivares wrote: > Hi, > > That's interesting. Hi Scott G: You are a true asset here. But, you already know that. Can't we just agree to have different opinions? If you really need to win this one, I'd hate to see you go. But, perhaps you want to run your own list and keep it as loose as you so desire. I beg the mods' pardon for butting in. Re: bad language was Re: =What the Verizon phone means for Apple
Scott asked, What's reasonable, who's definition of language? Marc says, The communities definition, the moderators definition, the definition of the wider society. Scott asked, Why do prudes always want reasonable when their beliefs aren't and use some sort of artificial moral high ground to brow beat others in to submission? Marc asks, why do you insist on calling others names because they don't share your opinion on this subject? I use offensive language all the time, but this doesn't mean that it is appropriate in all situations. You don't have to be a prude to think that swearing in front of a child, or on a bus, or on this list is inappropriate. Scott asked, What if I objected to the word piano because I had a bad Piano experience as a child and expected you to be reasonable and not use the word piano? If this is acceptable then where does that logic end? Marc says, It's a good thing we're not talking about the indiosyncratic linguistic preferences of a single person because then you might actually have a point. We're talking about linguistic standards that shift over time and are nagotiated through social dialogue, not one single person's feelings towards a couple of words. Scott said, At no time did anyone post anything that violated the FCC rules for over the air transmition. Even though I think the FCC is a bunch of stufed suits that seems like a fairly reasonable template and anyone who objects to content that fits with in that template is an old fuddy duddy of the highest order. Marc says, again with the name calling. You clearly don't understand the opposing position on this issue. I would urge you to take some time to reread the posts and think about what is being said. Scott said, Here's a brilliant idea with a lot of historical backing. Marc says, If we were talking about silencing a controversial idea, simply because it was controversial, I, and I'm sure many others, would totally agree. We're not talking about silencing a different opinion, a minority position, or anything like that, despite your attempts to suggest that is what's going on. We're talking about avoiding language that is generally considered offensive. It's really not a difficult request to comply with, especially when writing as opposed to speaking, where things tend to slip out unintentionally. the topic of bad language posts
I am just wondering how long is this topic going to keep going? What does it have to do with the purpose of the list? What does it have to do with the mac and voiceover? I was just wondering if the monitors can simplely remove the fokes who are using bad language and just have a 0 tolerance policy. So we won't have to keep going like the energizer bunny. It is just that I receive a lot of e-mails in my in box and I don't need anymore that are off topic. I really enjoy this list when it is on topic and have gained a lot of imformation. I really appreciated the eforts of the monitors who have taken it upon themselves to start this list. Please folks return to the original topic of discussing the mac and voiceover. RE: bad language was Re: =What the Verizon phone means for Apple
Normally, as this is not a mac-related topic, I would not chime in to comment on such. However, here we go: A mod note on this very issue has already been posted, implying (pretty directly, by my interpretation of the message) that this topic be closed for any further discussion. I would not be surprised if there is another before long, the next probably not being so forgiving. We all have our various opinions on the subject--and this list doesn't exist as a forum for convincing people. It is highly unlikely that anyone will be convinced by anybody else's writing on the subject, especially as very few of us know one another and are completely anonymous. This can be read about elsewhere on the internet. The point is that no matter how much bickering one does regarding cursing on this list, nobody will change their opinion. So, the solution is obvious--just cease discussing it at all. The words have already flown and discussing it won't change it. People curse--occasionally they do it in inappropriate situation; this is no different. This isn't any kind of new development being discussed--it's a small issue that is being gone over more thoroughly than the global warming debate in a left-right wing shoot-out. It's not worth the bandwidth, it's off-topic, and the same things are being said over and over. Rather than trying to convince one another (which, I repeat, cannot be done through this medium of anonymous written communication), just agree that we each think differently and drop this topic. I would even be up to a windows vs. Mac debate as opposed to this petty nonsense. I feel as if I am wasting my time even writing this email to mention it; I have my own opinion on the issue, and I appreciate the efforts to educate others on the list, but it's a pointless endeavor which will only waste the time of those more patient on this list--and I count myself among those numbers. At some point in time, I might have indulged my opinion and attempted to "bring people to the light", but you can't save the world every time. I enjoy this list for the intelligence and innovation it yields, not its admittedly equal and remarkable ability to dispute etiquette and keep in mind the social welfare of its members. Copying text from Safari
Can anyone tell me how to copy a line of text from Safari into the clipboard? I keep having this problem, today, I was on Google code and wanted to copy just my generated password from the page. If I interact with the element, I don't seem to be able to select and copy text like you can with jaws when browsing. The only reliable way I've found to do this is to copy the whole page into text edit and then copy what I want from there. You are missing quotes around the shell command that you are attempting to run. Also this might be a case where you need to use the terminal I am not sure. Re: Apple to add Wi-Fi hotspot to GSM iPhone with iOS 4.3 - rumor
The interesting part of this is that if AT&T does elect to offer the hotspot feature, I can bet you that anyone with the unlimited data plan will not be offered the option. If that is the case, that might push subscribers away. If AT&T is smart they will either allow the option to everyone regardless of his/her data plan or they will raise the 2Gb cap to 5Gb. My understanding (unconfirmed) is that VZW will not offer unlimited data plans perhaps, but instead data plans with a 5Gb limit. So, time will tell. Re: a question about apple scripting
OK. I was looking at a different copy of your script. You can either use Tell Application "Foo" something to work on end tell OR you can Tell application "Foo" to something to work on Note in the second version everything is on one line, and there is the word to between the tell section and the command that the foo bapplication is going to process. So dropping that end tel, or changing the to to a new line will correct this error. Jonathan On Jan 12, 2011, at 6:26 PM, Sarah Alawami wrote: > Nope. Okay. What you see pasted below is the response I got from the Drop Box Team about the issue of those of us who have the latest version of Drop Box not being able to gain access to the prefs window. Having now installed the latest version of Drop Box, I find that accessing the prefs window is not at all possible. when I try to click with the mouse, Press VO+space, or just press the space bar on the prefs menu, I cannot access this at all. this really does need to be addressed. Re: Airport Express question
Correct, I was thinking of DSL or cable. How quickly one forgets about those good old dial-up days. So, you are correct, a dial-up modem cannot be connected to the router. Funny you mention this as I recall APple had an old Airport router (think they called it Extreme) that looked like a UFO and it actually had a dial-up modem built-in. You were able to access dropbox at all? All I got in the old version was a whole bunch of unknowns during the setup process and then nothing after the setup was finished. Re: itunes podcast question
Hello. Make sure the view is set to text list view in iTunes. It's a radio button you'll find when you use control-option-left or right-arrow to move around the screen. Just check it with control-space. Interact with the podcast table using control-option-shift-down-arrow. Arrow down to the podcast you want to downnload. When you find it, do control-option-shift-m and use your arrow keys till you hear "download all podcast episodes." Hit the return key. The episodes will start downloading. If you only want to download certain episodes, just arrow to the episodes you want to download and hit control-option-shift-m on each one individually; you'll then hear "download podcast episode." You then hit return and the episodes will download. Re: bad language was Re: =What the Verizon phone means for Apple
I have used course language myself at times. The problem remains though, we are singling out others in our own community for being too abrasive when they are mild by comparison to some sighties. now I realize that the mods here have specific rules and ethics to which the adhere. We need to trust them to do their jobs. it is not up to us to tell them how. The problem I see here is that someone will be offended no matter what we say or do. My great Grandfather summed up nicely: "you can please some of the people some of the time. you can please all of the people some of the time. BUT, you cannot please all of the people all of the time". It sounds cliche I know, but, it is often true. -Eric On Jan 12, 2011, at 7:25 PM, Andy Baracco wrote: > Oh! God! Please give me strength. I don't mean to sound like a jerk but, what do you mean? This has always been the case for CDMA. Its not exclusive to the Verizon iPhone. So why would something which is the status quo be impact full? The hard of hearing will do what they been doing, use GSM until LTE is fully deployed.
