Re: Handbreak and backing up a Disney Movie

2010-12-10 Thread Justin Kauflin
I can't say how it is to burn the DVD, Up, but I've noticed that some Disney
movies have a sort of protection against burning them to the computer.
Disney has a funny way of dealing with burning dvd's to the computer.
When using handbreak, you can choose between a bunch of different titles to
have as the source. Disney basically makes a bunch of dummy fiWhat you'll want
to do is find out the title by playing the dvd in the default DVD player. When
the movie is playing, go to the go menu and scroll down to the title sub menu.
the correct title to use in handbreak will be checked. If you select the
wrong title, the dvd will import out of order.

Re: Unison 2.1.3, Accessible or not?

2010-12-10 Thread Scott Howell
Kevin,

This is not an issue of whether the developer understands what needs to be
done, but more a matter of doing it. I have pointed out the issues well over a
year ago and all subsequent releases have not attempted to address
accessibility and in fact has only gotten worse in my opinion. I have pointed
out the obvious with respect to increasing the user base by ensuring the app is
accessible to all and even got a note stating the issue is understood. Again,
the actions of the development team has demonstrated that accessibility is not
so important. Of course I would like nothing more than to be proven wrong and
to see an accessible version of a program I purchased. The history here is when
I purchased it, I could use it, but html was not supported. I asked for this
for a while and I think they may have added that functionality; however, at the
same time the Unison became unusable. So, an app that was fairly useful is now
useless and I have been receiving beta copies that do not work and my constant
reminders of accessibility just say the same thing, which is basically yeah we
know, but it's not a priority if it ever was.
So, if I seem frustrated, I am and if anyone can make progress, you would have
my eternal thanks.
Scott

I don't get a error message the movie does get backed up . My problem is when
playing it. It doesn't play in the right order. It starts like in other parts
of the movie and not the beginning. I have tried several times and the results
are the same.

Re: Peoples thoughts on adress panel!

2010-12-10 Thread Marlaina Lieberg
Yes, but don't you think it would be faster not to have to tab several times to
whichever button you want and press it for each name? I think the goal has to
begin to be creating more efficiency; I guess if I had to find a thing about
which to be critical regarding my Mac experience, it would be that in my
experience thus far, and I do not rate myself as an advanced user yet, but thus
far I do find that the Mac is less efficient time wise than my PC with
Window-Eyes. That said, I am committed to exclusively using my Mac until I
feel I am as advanced with it as I am with my pc. However, I do miss shortcut
things like this and alt f alt e, etc. Now maybe there is a way to get to menu
items such as file edit and view without doing vo m and right arrow but since I
haven't found that yet, this is just another example. I'd love to have the
ability in the address panel just to focus on a name and press a shortcut key
to populate the desired field, rather than several shift tabs.

Thanks for reading my rant, :)

I agree Marlaina. That is a big change from the windows side where their
seems to be a shortcut for everything. But I am still getting to know my
mac so now it takes me more time than on the windows pc. For example, I
have shortcuts for my office, mail, scanning program, media player, camera,
skype and web brouser. Not to mention the shortcuts within these programs as
well. I am sure that is a way to do the same on the mac, just have not
learned yet. Heather

Re: jailbreaking?

2010-12-10 Thread Jim Barbour
The quick and dirty answer is that jailbreaking won't interfere
with how VO works with your existing (i.e non jailbroken) apps.

However, many jailbroken apps will not work with voiceover. So, as a
voiceover user, you can successfully jailbreak your phone and continue
to use it. However, there will be roadblocks to using many jailbroken
apps.

Others shoudl chime in with their experiences with jailbroken apps
that are accessible. I've seen a few of them posted here.

I just turn curser tracking off and select that way noncontiguous items and
then I just tab once and hit the button for all names. but if some did not know
how to do that then the short cuts would be useful.

Re: jailbreaking?

2010-12-10 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
I'd echo what Jim has said. There are quite a few apps that you can
download that are accessible, but since there are so many apps
floating around, it's probably best that you tell us what you are
wanting to do then we can advise you.

Bare in mind that the steps for jailbreaking are going to vairy based
on the device that you own.

Hi Sarah!
Did you send this to 2 lists or twice to the same list?

But the other crashed my gmail!
Every time I tried to open it!
But because I cannot open it I do not know if you sent it to the other list!

vm fusion or bootcamp

2010-12-10 Thread Chris Westbrook
I'm thinking I am going to put windows on my mac. IS vm fusion better than
bootcamp? Do I have to buy another copy of windows if I don't have a windows
install disk anywhere? Can I still get xp cheaper if I do? There was some
mention of audio problems with vm fusion. Is the audio now comparable to that
on the regular mac?

Re: vm fusion or bootcamp

2010-12-10 Thread John Lipsey
Hello:

Personally, I recommend VM fusion. The update to fusion which was
just released seems to have fixed the audio issues. At least, the
ones I noticed.

Additionally, using Fusion lets you still run mac programs while doing
stuff in a windows environment. My understanding is that bootcamp
doesn't allow this. As I personally only use fusion for mudding and a
bit of audio editing I still haven't mastered under the mac, I don't
see the need to boot into windows, do what I need to do, then reboot
back into the mac OS.

Just my opinion.

Re: vm fusion or bootcamp

2010-12-10 Thread Kimberly thurman
Hi:

I run Windows 7 in VMWare Fusion on my Mac with no trouble whatsoever. I run
them both at the same time and switch back and forth effortlessly. Of course,
I have 8 gigs of ram in a late 2009 Macbook Pro 13 inch. The ram is the key.
If you don't have enough stick to Boot Camp. I have no sound issues.

If you want info, you may be able to get some off list from folks.

Well got a reply from apple but it was not what I expected. I explained thta
mail could not attach my crash logs for some reason

begin msg

Hi Sarah,

Thank you for the information. In the future, if you could attach the complete
crash log it would be more useful than a copy/paste. You can find the crash
logs in two places. The first would be in your users home folder
/Library/Logs/CrashReporter, the second location from the main level of the
hard drive /Library/Logs/CrashReporter. Please remember to archive or zip
multiple files.

Re: jailbreaking?

2010-12-10 Thread Scott Granados
Why should that be off topic?

Jailbreaking should be fine, especially since there provisions of some of the
new FCC regulations that allow for breaking of cryptography and protections for
the disabled to access media.

On a more general basis though, I bought the phone, if I want to jailbreak it,
make it a paper weight or hold up my fish tank with it I will. Screw the
manufacturor, they sold it to me thus the ownership rights transfer.
Possession is 9/10ths of the law and all that.

Re: vm fusion or bootcamp

2010-12-10 Thread Scott Granados
Go with fusion, I use it my self and love it.

Fusion allows you to run both windows and your Mac OSX environment at the same
time. Boot Camp only allows you to use one at a time. Also, the boot process
with boot camp isn't accessible I don't believe. I don't think it's impossible
to use but it's not as clean. Fusion also allows you to run other operating
systems as a VM including your favorite *nix flavors.

As for the audio, the latest release leveld out the gain between the Mac and
the VM sound so it's more smooth and your Voice over doesn't swamp out JFW as
an example.

Hope that helps.

Re: my apple mail keeps crashing! Help please?

2010-12-10 Thread Sarah Alawami
Well got what I believe to have a final responce. I don't have the time to take
it in to the apple store and this happens randomly remember.

Hi Sarah,

If Mail is not accepting attachments, then it sounds as if there is more going
on with the OS or the application itself. Looking over the log you pasted in,
Mail is encountering an issue with rendering the message you are viewing. You
may need to contact AppleCare or visit an Apple Retail store to see if they can
help repair the Operating System.

Apple Accessibility

thoughts:
why would it randomly have trouble rendering messages? and if I read line by
line why won't it happen then? so this seems to me this is a voice over issue.

Re: jailbreaking?

2010-12-10 Thread Kevin Mattingly
OK, once again, I'm pulling my foot out my mouth. Anyone can do anything with
an apple device as long as it is done legally. The better thing to say is that
you jail break it at your own risk. Apple or any other manufacturer may decide
that you've voided your warranty.

Have fun and good luck,

Re: vm fusion or bootcamp

2010-12-10 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi!

What do you mean that the boot process isn't accessible? I haven't seen any
trouble so far.

Also, the downside to Fusion is that, if you don't allocate the proper amount
of memory to your system, you will get what is called a "memory swap". This
means that Mac OS X and your virtual machine will be fighting for your RAM,
though this is mostly noticeable when running Windows as a virtual machine. In
Bootcamp, you do not run into this kind of limitation and your Mac can use all
your system resources, ensuring maximum efficiency. So, given how quickly your
Windows operating system actually boots, it won't really matter much,
especially not if you find a way to transfer files between both systems if Mac
OS X is shut down. There are several possibilities for this.

Nic

Re: Handbreak and backing up a Disney Movie

2010-12-10 Thread Jenny Wood
Hi Justin. I also would like to thank you for the information. My husband and
I have noticed this problem ourselves, and the only work-around we could find
was to simply use another program to copy the DVD. However, I must be missing
something. I was able to determine which title is the correct one, but am
unable to figure out exactly how to specify this in Handbreak. I click on the
Source button, and select the DVD, but I can't seem to find out how to locate
the title from there. If you have anymore suggestions, I would be very
appreciative!

Thanks!

Yes, but don't you think it would be faster not to have to tab several
times to whichever button you want and press it for each name? I think the
goal has to begin to be creating more efficiency; I guess if I had to find
a thing about which to be critical regarding my Mac experience, it would
be that in my experience thus far, and I do not rate myself as an advanced
user yet, but thus far I do find that the Mac is less efficient time wise
than my PC with Window-Eyes. That said, I am committed to exclusively
using my Mac until I feel I am as advanced with it as I am with my pc.
However, I do miss shortcut things like this and alt f alt e, etc. Now
maybe there is a way to get to menu items such as file edit and view
without doing vo m and right arrow but since I haven't found that yet,
this is just another example. I'd love to have the ability in the address
panel just to focus on a name and press a shortcut key to populate the
desired field, rather than several shift tabs.

Thanks for reading my rant, :)

I thought of command+1, 2 and 3 but I do not know if that would muck

Disney has a funny way of dealing with burning dvd's to the computer.
When using handbreak, you can choose between a bunch of different titles
to have as the source. Disney basically makes a bunch of dummy files that
look like they might be the actual movie, but are just jumbled files.
What you'll want to do is find out the title by playing the dvd in the
default DVD player. When the movie is playing, go to the go menu and
scroll down to the title sub menu. the correct title to use in handbreak
will be checked. If you select the wrong title, the dvd will import out
 of order.

 Hope that helps some,
 Justin

Back with Questions

2010-12-10 Thread Jane
Hey everyone. I took myself off the list because for the longest time I didn't
have a Mac that was just mine; now I do. I have a used Mac Mini. Have had it
for a couple of days now. I have a few questions.

1. What do you use to get the audio from unprotected movies? It's not like I
need the video on my iPad. I thought Audacity would do it, but I'm not certain.

2. Can someone please remind me how to make it possible to type in Spanish in
a TextEdit or other application like OpenOffice? I've lost the instructions.

3. The Mac Mini has, I think 2 gigs of ram, and I am interested in running
Windows XP on it with VM Fusion. Will this be possible, and how do I go about
it? I only want it for some games that I can't play easily on here, because
there are no Mac equivalents.

4. Is it possible to sync the iPad with a Mac *and* a Windows computer? It
originally was synced with the Windows computer, and I want to sync it with the
Mac without losing content already on it.

5. How do I navigate quickly to the top of a document with VoiceOver? I've
completely forgotten how.

Thanks for the help.

mac mini should I?

2010-12-10 Thread Joe Paton

Good evening all.

I'm new to the list, so please bear with my ignorance.

I'm thinking about buying a Mac Mini and of course accessing it through VO.

Is there anything I should be aware of before doing this, based on
the overall experience of list members?
It appears to be the least expensive route into apple products to me,
but I could be wrong.

I'm based in the uk if that makes a jot of difference.

Thanks.

google chrome and voiceover

2010-12-10 Thread William Windels
Hi all,
There where a few posts on this list about google chrome and, because of that,
I have installed it.

My first opinion is that it's working.

However, it seems not to have the same quality as safari.

Some remarks:
The webrotor seems to work,
a summary of a webpage, count of headings, edit-fields... is not announced.
it seems not possible to press some buttons on websites.
There are controls that are marked as unknown like comboboxes.

I'd like to know about other comments and also is there a possibility to
communicate with google about this?

Thanx for your answers,

William

I love mine. It's a tiny box that just sits here on my desk. You have to
purchase a monitor and a keyboard--you can use bluetooth or a USB one. I
personally am using the USB for now, but I have a bluetooth option if I
want/need to use it.:) I just love the way mine's working out, and it's used.

Re: google chrome and voiceover

2010-12-10 Thread Justin Ekis
Hi William,

I checked this out a few days ago myself. The accessibility of google chrome is
still being developed. I recently took a look at the web page on their bug
tracker that lists the open accessibility issues. There were at least 5 or 6
bugs that specifically relate to voiceover. The status of each one is listed
with varying degrees of progress on the work. I don't remember exactly which
issues were on that list, but I'm sure google is probably aware of what you've
mentioned. Unfortunately I'm not sure which address you'd want to write to in
order to contribute feedback.

Hope this helps.

a couple of questions

2010-12-10 Thread Jon Squally
Hello Everyone,

I have a MacBook Pro with 4 gigs of ram. I am still learning since I have
only had the machine about a week now.

Thank you all for posting information about VMware in the past. This helped
a lot when researching the exact method for installing windows 7 within a VM
independently as well as getting the JawsKey remapped. Using easy install,
and creating a user without a password to start with worked perfectly.

I am running a VM with Windows 7 32 bit. The Mac os version is 10.6.5.
Should I have installed the 64 bit version of windows 7?

Is there a way to tell whether I have a 64 bit processor? The processor is
an Intel 2.66 GHZ core I7. I have allocated 3 gigs of ram for the VM, but
notice sluggishness when restarting and upon startup. Does anyone have
recommendations of settings to change within fusion?

I have file sharing turned on, but within windows 7 I cannot check email
using IMap port 993. This does not appear to be a problem with the Google
apps account since other machines check the email for the address fine. Are
there specific network settings that I need to change on the Mac side that
will allow the VM to check email? The internet is working on both the Mac
side and within windows.

Thank you, Jon.

Re: jailbreaking?

2010-12-10 Thread tim
Ok, you can jail break any IOS device thanks to the FCC.
Now for the bad news. Some iPhones like version4 need the base code.. You will
have to google that, but it is out there.
To use the one I am giving here you will need to use a PC and teather the
device .
You need the IOS
4.2.1 for you device.
You can get that download here,
http://www.felixburns.de/iPod/firmware/
Also this file ran under windows,
http://www.sendspace.comfile/tyb9jo
Now there are some draw backs to this and no cydia is not useable with
voiceover. So will need sight to use that app. And all new versions4 devices
can not be turned off or the will have to be broke teatherd again.
But, if your like me, I hardly turn mine off anyway.
For more info or help. You can skipe me at t_morris

RE: Back with Questions

2010-12-10 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Ii have used audio hijack to get audio.
There afew options for Spanish, depending your prefered layout.
1. Use the default kb layout, then most Spanish accents are available
with the option key. Optio ? Should provide the leading.
If you prefer a SPanish or Mexacan layout, then go to system
preferences under the apple menu. The internationalizations window has
a broad set of layouts one can even create arotary of prefered layouts.
Note: that you will probably want to buy a Spanish synthesizer.n

Subject: Back with Questions
Hey everyone. I took myself off the list because for the longest time
I didn't have a Mac that was just mine; now I do. I have a used Mac
Mini. Have had it for a couple of days now. I have a few questions.

1. What do you use to get the audio from unprotected movies? It's not
like I need the video on my iPad. I thought Audacity would do it, but
I'm not certain.

2. Can someone please remind me how to make it possible to type in
Spanish in a TextEdit or other application like OpenOffice? I've lost
the instructions.

3. The Mac Mini has, I think 2 gigs of ram, and I am interested in
running Windows XP on it with VM Fusion. Will this be possible, and
how do I go about it? I only want it for some games that I can't play
easily on here, because there are no Mac equivalents.

4. Is it possible to sync the iPad with a Mac *and* a Windows
computer? It originally was synced with the Windows computer, and I
want to sync it with the Mac without losing content already on it.

5. How do I navigate quickly to the top of a document with VoiceOver?
I've completely forgotten how.

Thanks for the help.

The mac mini is a nice little mac, just be sure you have a monitor to connect

  Hello Everyone,

I have a MacBook Pro with 4 gigs of ram. I am still learning since I have
only had the machine about a week now.

Thank you all for posting information about VMware in the past. This helped
a lot when researching the exact method for installing windows 7 within a VM
independently as well as getting the JawsKey remapped. Using easy install, and
creating a user without a password to start with worked perfectly.

This does not appear to be a problem with the Google apps
account since other machines check the email for the address fine. Are there
specific network settings that I need to change on the Mac side that will allow
the VM to check email? The internet is working on both the Mac side and within
windows.

  Thank you, Jon.

Re: Handbreak and backing up a Disney Movie

Thank you! I did finally manage to get things working. And just as I had
suspected, it was my own ignorance stopping the show. :-) I am still in the
process of becoming completely comfortable with voiceover, and learning when to
tab verses using the VO modifier keys with the arrows to navigate. For some
reason, I was looking for a pop-up button that said "title", as opposed to
navigating such that the labels themselves were being read, not just the
selection within the pop-up button. Anyway, it's all good now.

Thanks again!

If you select the wrong title, the dvd will import out
 of order.

 Hope that helps some,
 Justin

Re: jailbreaking?

2010-12-10 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
I personaly wouldn't have jailbroken my 3gs if it was a tethered
jailbreak. I don't like the idea of my phone becoming useless while
I'm away from a computer.

Some cool things I've been doing with jailbroken apps:
Turn your iPhone into a wireless hotspot with pdaNet.
Use 5 icon doc to put 5 icons onto your doc.
Use fullscreen safari to have a full screen browser.
Use pwnTunes to drag and drop music onto your device or wifiSync to
sync wirelessly.
And for the more geeky amongst us, theres always open ssh.

Re: mac mini should I?

2010-12-10 Thread Yuma Decaux
Has anyone got that little dongle thingy that does nothing but connect to the
mac mini to pass as a display?

I've got one of those on my mac mini 2010 and voice over seems alright.

Hi,
I know it's on the dock by default, but where is the trash folder actually
located on my Mac?

Re: Maximizing Windows?

2010-12-10 Thread Bryan Jones
I like the free utility called right zoom. It changes the zooming behavior to
mimic the maximize behavior of MS windows.

Re: mac mini should I?

2010-12-10 Thread Jude DaShiell
I own a Mac Mini and you need to make it known VoiceOver will be used
and have a dvd burner installed in it. It'll be a little more expensive
at first but will pay for itself when you start doing things with large
volumes of data. When you get the unit, and get it set up needs an
ethernet cable for internet no phone modems they're too slow. Also a
couple disks come with the machine. When you put the operating system
disk in, and don't type anything for a few seconds the computer will
start asking you questions you answer with the keyboard and go from
there. Most of the peripheral connections are usb 2.0 and monitors run
at most $100.00 U.S. in places like Wal-Mart. Keyboards are cheap as
are mice. Speakers can run into money but the mac mini hasn't got the
connector for the really expensive speakers. Those connectors have
edges in them and very few pins. Speaker jack is farthest to the left
Mic to its right. Power button on far right. If more memory is
available than 2 gig and you can afford it, buy it and have it installed
for you. Hard drive capacities have increased in later models than the
Mini I now have, but if offered optional extra hard drive space maybe
better to buy that than more memory. In future as a separate purchase,
buy a time capsule for backups of your stuff. They connect to the mac
Mini wirelessly. If you work for the government, state so when buying
you get discounts possibly even in England. Find your local mac user's
group and start attending meetings, the friends you make there can be
very informative.

Good evening all.

I'm new to the list, so please bear with my ignorance.

I'm thinking about buying a Mac Mini and of course accessing it through VO.

Is there anything I should be aware of before doing this, based on the
overall experience of list members?
It appears to be the least expensive route into apple products to me, but I
could be wrong.

I'm based in the uk if that makes a jot of difference.

Thanks.
