Re: accessibility of MacBook Air

2010-11-16 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
its still my belief though that a MBP or good high end PC can be jus as instant
on as a solid state memory device. my MBP when put into standby will start up
and be ready to use in about 2 seconds or so, which is as fast, if not in fact
faster than the new MBA.

Re: accessibility of MacBook Air

2010-11-16 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
the issue is that the new MBA throughout its product range uses only solid
state memory, SSD, admittedly though so did the high end old ones.

so a solid state machine starting from cold, i.e.. not in standby can much more
quickly start up and be ready to use, instant on is a little pushing it, but
its about 4 maybe 5 seconds, which is pretty dam quick.

the question is, how much slower is a MBP with good spec. in my opinion, if you
put the MBP into standby then its no quicker, if I shut my MBP down and start
it up again, from cold, it takes about 11 seconds to be ready to use, this is a
brand new, i7 with 7200 improved hard drive in it MBP, so top of the line. so
this will make a difference.

but the key here is, when you start comparing 5 seconds verse 10 seconds, etc,
are we really discussing productivity or vanity / desire?

I'm not saying that those who buy a MBA are all about vanity, I bought one to
compare against my MBP, but sent it back as I preferred the sound quality of my
MBP and the i7 in this 15in model.

I also require the larger hard drive storage space not available in either the
11 or 15 inch models of the MBA.

cheers.

After shutting the Air off, Restart is just like my Mac.

So, what is this Instant On feature and how does it work?

Wow mate,

You seem to be left in the dark awfully often around here ...
The bug you mention isn't known to me i'm afraid. When i played with
the new GB everything seemed to work fine. Did your instruments work
before? I had a problem where it didnt play software synthesizers the
first time, but that was because of me not having them installed yet,
heh.
I recommend turning voiceOver on and off and see if that helps. If it
doesnt, have a close look at the items around the browser. Make sure
you didn't accidentally get into for example the media browser, that
would explain your issue. Find the checkboxes and make sure track info
is checked and media browser and loop browser are not. (you can leave
loopbrowser on if you like but it clutters up the screen when you
don't need it IMO)

One thing that surprises me about this is why this is not provided through the

integrate the enhancements?

the moment, audacity isn't accessible on the mac side. So it is weird that we
do have an accessible version but it is not the latest one.
When I downloaded the latest release, it only read unknown for me everywhere.

Re: skype 5 and dialing account numbers within a call

2010-11-16 Thread Justin Thornton
hi
try this for future refferance
when in a call
press command plus the number 2
this will also togle the dialpad
this should bring up a box to input numbers
in order to get the tones to sound when you press the corasponding numbers
press VO right arrow until you land on one of the actual number buttons
now you can press the number row and here the tones while in a call and they
will get transmitted
when you done press command W to close the window

I have seen this also and have to admit
it takes a little timing and listening to get the number pressed right
skype may have some sort of filter that causes this but im not sure

Hi all,

I'm curious about one thing. In the contacts it says rows 78 of 98 but I can

Re: accessible version of audacity

2010-11-16 Thread Colin M
Hi there all!
Going by what I can find on the site, this is a interim test build so they say!
I do not know if it will be included in future releases, they also say it may
contain bugs!
So they might be testing the waters to see how people like it and its
popularity!
And I suppose what kind of feed back they get!
I'm only guessing though!

removing unnatural pauses while using Ivox voices

To anybody using Ivox voices, While reading text using VO+a, I notice
unnaturally long pauses quite possibly due to line breaks or periods. Is there
any way to cut out these pauses? Note that all my sounds are activated, and,
merely deactivating the sounds does not much help. Thanks.

Hi!

This is the same with Native Mac OS X voices currently. Also, it stops Alex
from breathing. You will also notice this when going to elements such as
multi-line edit fields on websites. It also applies to text fields in general
most of the time. I'm sad this hasn't been fixed yet.

Re: accessible version of audacity

2010-11-16 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi!

True enough. I really am curious why there are two builds. It'd be very
interesting to see if they have the same features, though. Given the version
numbers match, I'd presume that to be the case. If not, I have to wonder how
committed the Audacity team is to previous accessibility efforts. Also, I'm a
little concerned that it's listed as two different applications, and not the
same application. As far as I know, nothing points to this directory anywhere
on the official site:

iTunes Ping and purchasing albums

2010-11-16 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hey everyone!

I took the chance and sent this to both lists. Since Mac-Access concerns itself
with IOS as well and not just Mac OS X, there's no need to send it to ViPhone.

I have an artist on Ping who released an album quite recently...yesterday, to
be precise. I clicked to view the album in the group. Let's just clear
something up here for those not using Ping that much.

When an artist wants to share his album with you in their posts, they show up
as a group below their post. Within that group, all information relevant to the
album is displayed as well as a link to the artist. Now, here is where the
problem is.

I clicked the link for the album itself within the group in question. I was
told it was not available in the Danish iTunes Store, however if I went and
search within the iTunes Store, it was found and I was able to purchase without
any hassle. Checking the link, it referred to the Danish store the way it
should have, and the links were in fact identical to each other.

Has anyone experienced this both on IOS and Mac OS X? This sounds like a
terrible bug. I'd assume it'd have something to do with both platforms, since
it's the store itself.

Regards,
Nic

Ricardo,

I've been buying PC laptops for the past 2 years without C drives, so Apple
didn't pip their way to the punch with that one.

also please folks note that the MBA 11in doesn't have an SD slot either.

Re: accessibility of MacBook Air

2010-11-16 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
there is a Mac Book Air Super Drive though which is a specific Apple product
for this purpose, its a small light weight unit, which only has one USB lead,
no power cable, as it draws its power from the Air.

very nice unit, although ripping disks and burning does take longer than an
internal drive, be aware of this.

A Drobo is short for a Data Robotics appliance, its a network Attached storage
device which operates in what they call beyond RAID coniguration, simular to
NetGearss X-RAID and others.

basically its a unit which you can put multiple hard drives into and access
them across your network, some have only USB, some have file sharing
functionlaity and others have iSCSI which allows for direct over the network
connectivity.

they are nice, and very user friendly, although for the money I'd opt for a
NetGear unit with X-RAID

Hi.
Jaws does actually have quite a few emoticons and abbreviations in the
dictionary manager file for windows live messenger, so you could use that to
find out what they are and add them to VO's pronunciation dictionary if you're
so inclined.

Re: Fun fun fun with Alex :)

2010-11-16 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi!

Or, you could find an online listing. I know there are lots of those, and even
emoticons that you've never even heard of. The only issue is that some
applications write smiley as :-), and other write it as :). I realize VoiceOver
will pronounce both of these, however, but that's just an example. That
requires more pronunciations added, but it's a fun time waster. I suppose it
may come in handy if someone is mad at you, but you don't know what the angry
smiley looks like.

Can't empty the trash.

2010-11-16 Thread Kimberly thurman
Hello all:

I just tried to empty my trash and it said I can't because the Google Chrome
DMG is in use. How do I take care of this? I installed Google Chrome
yesterday, but it is still inaccessible. All I got was "Google Chrome has no
windows" when I command tabbed around.

Thanks in advance! :)

Okay, I can give that a try, but 1) it's very quiet here, next to no ambient
noise and 2) I don't have this problem on my cell, and the mic is not muted
there. Maybe the mic in my Macbook is much more sensitive than the one in my

Re: skype 5 and dialing account numbers within a call

2010-11-16 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
I am hitting command 2 to toggle on and off the dial pad; I use the numbers on
the number row of my keyboard to make the tones; I don't need to click every
button in the boxes set up on the screen; that's a visual aid and, unless it
makes different noises than when pressing the numbers, the number row is
quickest. I hear the tones, just like I do on my cell, but the computer on the
other end doesn't recognize them; what's odd about this is, when it says "Press
one for English," and I press 1, it works. It's only when putting in a
nine-digit account number that Skype has problems; I'm wondering if it's a slow
transmission problem, and that I have to wait a second or so after pressing in
each number...

why the fuss over the MBA

2010-11-16 Thread Matthew J

hi all,

I'm afraid I don't quite understand why the MBA is generating such hipe
in the news at the moment. I know its a little bit smaller and thinner,
I accept that and that it might be good for some users, but the fact of
it having only 1 USB port and no direct ethernet, plus 7 hrs of battery
when the mbp bosts 10? *headdesk* but I have a quick question.
Wouldn't an mbp, just the stock 2.4 duo core one, with a solid state 128
gb ssd come out of standby in say 3 seconds, just like the macbook air
does? That plus a longer battery life more ram and a very similar price
point, even factoring in the ssd upgrade? Since I know you can't put a
7200 rpm in an mbp13 is why I chose the ssd because a 5400 yeah, its a
bit slow, no doubt.

So basically, why haven't people thought of this? or is it really just a
few inches and a bit of thickness causing people to shell out for these?

MJ

You forgot, too, that the Air is a *lot* lighter. A pound and a half, give or

only had one.

Re: why the fuss over the MBA

2010-11-16 Thread Matthew Campbell
The SSD makes the macbook air a lot speedier in some tasks as well and the
reason for that is because the hard drive is one of the slowest parts in a

Re: office for the mack vs i works:

2010-11-16 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Chenelle,

Unfortunately, Office for Mac is not accessible to VO users so there really is
no choice.

In any case, iWork09 is very good and can read and produce documents in the
Office formats. iWork is also considerably cheaper than Office.

Cheers,

Anne

hi everyone,

I just wanted to say that i do not infer that the mack is like crap theory to
be offensive at all. however, i can understand why some would find it to be
quite offensive to them though. a joke is a joke and it should not turn into
something that is horrific to someone else that might not be able to take a
joke. laughter is the best medicine that one can receive through these most
horrific times that we are having. but i still do love the mack and will
continue to love it.

 Hi,

It is just a 2 step process. First you will want to go into the
settings in iTunes and under advance, change the default iTunes music
library to the folder on your external that contains all your music.
Then copy and paste the iTunes .xml and other iTunes file onto your
external. These should be found in your home folder under music/iTunes.

Re: why the fuss over the MBA

2010-11-16 Thread Esther

Hi,

I thought this article at the LowEnd Mac site titled, "SSD: Why the
2010 MacBook Air Is So Fast" by Dan Knight did a good job of
explaining the previous speed performance limits (historically, and
also for the MBA in recent technology context):

http://lowendmac.com/musings/10mm/ssd-means-fast.html

The performance boost is, in large part, due to the solid state disk
performance, as Matthew J mentioned, but there's a slight edge from
also having your base system integrated and tuned to use this
hardware. And if you want the very fastest edge, you'll have to
custom order the 4GB memory option online, since the memory is not
user upgradable from the models you buy from the retailer.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Since I know you can't put a 7200 rpm in an mbp13 is why I chose
the ssd because a 5400 yeah, its a bit slow, no doubt.

So basically, why haven't people thought of this? or is it really
just a few inches and a bit of thickness causing people to shell
out for these?

Re: pasting date and time in Text Edit?

2010-11-16 Thread Esther

Hi John (and Jonathan),

This may be overkill for your needs, but this kind of customization is
easy to do with a software application called TextExpander from
SmileOnMyMac. TextExpander allows you to define your own custom
snippets that get expanded, optionally with the format and placement
you want. For example, since the default samples already include a
snippet definition, "ddate" (date with an extra leading "d") that
would insert the current date in the format: November 16, 2010, and a
"ttime" (time with an extra leading "t") that inserts time as 2:41 PM,
I decided to create a new snippet with assigned name "dtstamp" (for
date and time stamp), that has exactly the format you specified
(leading day of week, and time using a 24 hour clock). It took me
less than a minute with the TextExpander Preferences pane (on my older
version of this software) to create the snippet definition by going to
the menu button beyond the content text area for snippets and
selecting the formats I wanted under the date and time options. You
even have date and time math options -- so if you're writing somebody
to give their warranty period and want to automatically insert the
expiration date for a fixed number of months or years from now, you
can define a snippet that will include that calculation.

I use the TextExpander Touch app more on my iPod Touch, especially
before Bluetooth keyboards were supported, and extensive typing on the
virtual keyboard was more of an issue. While you don't need to have
TextExpander on your computer to use it on your iPhone or iPod Touch,
if you do have the Mac version of TextExpander (with its expanded
capabilities), you can sync its definitions to the iPhone or iPod Touch.

I've just checked that my snippet definition for "dtstamp" works on
the iPod Touch:

%A, %B %e, %Y, %1H:%M

The TextExpander definitions will work in any app -- so if I wanted to
type this in Pages, or mail, I could have the formatted date/time
stamp show up each time I typed the string.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi Louis,

List price is $34.95 for the Mac (computer) version, but I bought an
earlier version on sale:

http://smilesoftware.com/TextExpander/

You can search for previous mentions to this app in the archives, in
the context of HTML coding and other items. You can also use it to
correct your spelling of technical words. Note that the iPhone
version only expands in apps that support TextExpander, but there are
quite a few that do, since they released the SDK for free use.

Re: why the fuss over the MBA

Hi MJ:
I have to say I'd agree with you. I think sometimes some of us who are

I have to say, I felt the fuss over the iPad was overblown, but now I covet

Hi Louie,

I recall that last year SmileOnMyMac put all their software on sale for 50% off on Black
Friday with a coupon code of "SMILEONFRIDAY"  You could always get the trial
download and wait to see whether TextExpander is discounted on the Friday after
Thanksgiving by checking their Blog site for whether there's a code to purchase:
http://smileonmymac.net/blog/
But all their products come with a 90-day money back guarantee

You can search for previous mentions to this app in the archives, in the
context of HTML coding and other items. You can also use it to correct your
spelling of technical words. Note that the iPhone version only expands in apps
that support TextExpander, but there are quite a few that do, since they
released the SDK for free use.

Chat clients: Was Telnet

2010-11-16 Thread Deb Lewis
Hi!!

Still looking for chat client recommendations. I've always done this through
Telnet so that was my initial request here. Have received one recommendation
and do appreciate that. Also open to others. I know most people don't do IRC
these days, but I have occasion to do so & hoping to find a reasonable way.
Any additional resources appreciated. Since the Mac is unix under the hood I
would think there's an easy way to get this done. Just not familiar.

Re: Fun fun fun with Alex :)

2010-11-16 Thread Teresa Cochran
In other screen-readers, I took a big list of emoticons and just added them to
the pronunciation dictionary. It was a little work, but easy . I was pleasantly
surprised not to have to do so much of that with Alex and VO.

The funniest results I've had with adding manually were the names of the drives
in windows. (C smile, D smile, etc), since I didn't feel like using them only
in some applications and made them global. LOL

I'm remembering the fun a friend and I used to have making Dectalk say odd
stuff, but now, speech synths are hard to fool.

Hi Jürgen,

I was so glad to get this note. I was beginning to think I was alone

some places but not in others. I miss being able to use it as sometimes I am

The only area this seems to be happening is in mail and usually when google is

I'll keep looking for a solution but if anyone figures this out please let us

around with checkboxes for some of vlc's functionality. On Tue, 9 Nov

 Hi Jason,
I can at least give you an answer for your first question. I use VLC media
player. It can handle winamp playlists, and it can also be set as your
default media application. It works very well, and is quite accessible.
There are a few check boxes that aren't labeled, but one's an EQ, one puts
it in full screen mode in case you're watching a movie with it.
 I hope that helps.

Re: Undo not working consistently

2010-11-16 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I am not sure of everything going on here, but there are a few things
that can be different about trash configurations...

1. There is the possiblility of deleteing in place in which case
command-L should show you the deleted messages still being in the
Inbox.
2. Mail could be using the google "GoogleMail/bin" mailbox for trash
In this case, the mail might get completely deleted by Google's empty
bin or Mails delete functions.
3. Mail could be using either an older GMail folder or a Mail created
folder for its trash folder.

It might even be possible to configure Mail to use a "Local" copy for
the trash folder.

If you have type 1 deletions, then viewing the deleted messages and
then selecting one with the VoiceOver cursor should allow you to
Un-delete it.

I believe the undo functionality in other cases might get disabled as
soon as you move the VO cursor, but you should be able to find your
message in the Trash with a bit of Sherlock ah, Oops, wrong Apple
search metaphor... [well any way the search functionality in Either
Mail or the Finder]

Sound Hound question

2010-11-16 Thread Eric Caron
Sound Hound Users,
Sound Hound is a music identification app on the iPhone.

When I first tried sound Hound I seemed to be able to swipe around to
find each item. I then tried to purchase the program within the app. It
didn't seem to work so I purchased it from the App store. I ended up being
billed for both. Apple fixed that but from that point on when I used Sound
Hound I had to drag my finger around to find things and more items seemed
unlabeled.

Did I somehow end up with a different version? This happened right
when a update came out.

So, do others need to slide around to access items or do you just swipe to each
thing?

I do love the app.

Oh, also wonder why sometimes the album date reades something like 1973 to 1911
or 1990 to 1912. The first year is usually correct as the album date but I
don't know what the other number means.

Sound Hound tips wanted?

You shouldn't need to use this to set the work group. To do this, open network
preferences, and click advanced. Click the wins tab, here you can indicate the
name of your work group.

Re: macbook pro battery.

2010-11-16 Thread Les Kriegler
Mike, on my desktop, the System Profiler icon is accessible, so I can go in
there with minimal keystrokes. When on the list of choices, I hit letter P
until getting to the Power option, open it, tab once and then the battery
information is available on that screen. I've turned down the brightness to 0%
and it will be interesting to see how much the battery life improves. Also, it
appears that on my MBP, the brightness setting is retained when re-starting the
Mac.

not sure you can upload just audio. I think it must be a video format. you can
always take a picture, set it as your still and have iMovie make a video from
it.
