In other screen-readers, I took a big list of emoticons and just added them to the pronunciation dictionary. It was a little work, but easy . I was pleasantly surprised not to have to do so much of that with Alex and VO.
The funniest results I've had with adding manually were the names of the drives in windows. (C smile, D smile, etc), since I didn't feel like using them only in some applications and made them global. LOL I'm remembering the fun a friend and I used to have making Dectalk say odd stuff, but now, speech synths are hard to fool.
