Mike, on my desktop, the System Profiler icon is accessible, so I can go in there with minimal keystrokes. When on the list of choices, I hit letter P until getting to the Power option, open it, tab once and then the battery information is available on that screen. I've turned down the brightness to 0% and it will be interesting to see how much the battery life improves. Also, it appears that on my MBP, the brightness setting is retained when re-starting the Mac.
