Re: switching from 64 to 32 bit version of OS

2010-11-09 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi!

Well, you're already booting in 32-bit by default, so you don't need to. It
becomes interesting if you boot into 64-bit, though. You may see performance
options, or they may be so minimal for you to notice. You may also get
incompatibility issues, though, in case a program doesn't support 64-bit
extentions.

Re: garage band 11 some simple step by steps?

2010-11-09 Thread John André Netland
Hi,

Try these tricks in GarageBand:

1) How to select loops? I suppose you mean how to select them for editing after
you have pasted them into the timeline, and the trick is to do a
control-option-shift-space click on the region you want to edit. To do actual
moving or editing of regions in the timeline, you do the commands for
moving/resizing items that you find in your VoiceOver commands. Just remember
to control-option-shift-space click first.

2) How to do panning? In the arrange area, find the first element, the track
headers, interact with the instruments group if there is more than one
instrument, and finally interact with the track. Find the pan button, interact
with it and go left or right with VoiceOver. Be aware, that only using arrow
keys here still move your play head, so you have to do an actual VoiceOver move
to the left or right to do panning.

3) How to do fades? If you mean setting volume faders, you do that in the same
place as you do panning. If you mean fader automation, the only one you
currently can do is a master fade out with default settings, unless you do it
manually.

4) How to add effects? When you have selected a track in the arrange area,
either in the track headers, timeline or simply on top of the arrange area with
your up/down arrows, you make the track info group visible with command-I,
interact with the track group you find after the arrange group, and find the
browse/edit buttons. If you are in a real instrument track, you can browse the
presets by pressing the browse button and interact with the browser you find
near by, or you can press edit and go further to edit each effect on the track.
If you are in a software instrument, doing the same either browse through the
preset sounds or gives you access to the setup of the instrument to shape a new
instrument.

Hope this helps! Smile.

Cheers,
John André

Re: Getting rid of DropBox

2010-11-09 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Did you even get to the preferences menu at all? Remember, you need to rout
your mouse to the Universal menu then move the mouse straight left. Then, when
you hear that the mouse is over the drop Box menu, click the mouse using
VO+shift+space. Now, arrow down to the preferences menu and then press return
until you hear, "select preferences" or something like that, pressing return
one time after another will toggle between select and deselect. One more
thing, after you've done this successfully once, you need to restart Voice OVer
before you can do it again.

Hi Mark,

I have the Iphone 3GS and i love it. Here's how you change the voice, I haven't
done this in a while, so if I'm missing a few steps, please correct me. Oh, I
almost forgot when you look at the Iphone see if you can get someone sighted to
turn VoiceOver on. You can do this from the Mac without sighted assistance,
which is how I did it, but if you're looking at it in a store, there might not
be a Mac around. To enable VoiceOver do the following:
1. Tap settings and then general.
2. THen tap accessibility and then tap VoiceOver.  A message will come up
asking you if you want to enable VoiceOver since it changes the way the Iphone
behaves or something like that. Have the person assisting you click okay. Once
that is enabled, Samantha should start speaking. You can change the voice as I
did to Karen by following the steps below. It's similar to turning VoiceOver on
but not quite.

1. Double tap settings.
2. Double tap general.
3. Double tap international and there you will see a list of languages. If you
flick with three fingers up towards the top of the screen you will navigate the
rows faster. It's kind of like a scrolling motion. I think Australian is in the
list in one of the first few rows. I hope I have helped and not confused you.
Have a great day!

Allison

k1000. I always do a little ughch sort of thing to myself whenever a piece of
mail arrives and I have to open my decrepit windows xp virtual machine just to
get kurzweil to tell me what the thing is. Fine reader express is a write off
in my opinion. I've played with it extensively and can make it work in a
pinch, but I wouldn't recommend it to my clients. So k1000, and it's
accustomed little mental cringe as my vm opens are the way to go for now, but
only until something better comes along.

Re: any way to send .brf files to my juliette?

2010-11-09 Thread erik burggraaf
Actually, the drivers aren't in duxbury, they are generic/text only drivers for
windows.

If you can get your juliet plugged in and working, you should be able to send
your translated file directly to your juliet for printing. I've been trying to
figure out how this works myself because I want to be able to support it, but I
don't have the setup to work on.

Hi Mark,

How are you? You're most welcome for the help I was happy to assist. I hope you

going to be a wonderful experience for you. There are many apps on the Iphone
that have changed my life like Navigon and Digit-Eyes leading to my greater
independence. Yay to that! I learned something today about changing the
international voice settings, I will try going in to the langauge roder and
change to Karen rather than changing to australia. I learn something new

Virtual cursor of some sort in OS X

2010-11-09 Thread RvR
Hi everyone,

Tried to search the archives for this, probably didn't choose the correct
keywords cause I couldn't find what I needed. So I try my luck with this
message.

A while back I asked about creating hotspots and I remember Anne answering
it is only possible in areas which Voice Over can detect and then label.
That's loud and clear for me, but now wonder if this also means there is no
virtual cursor of some sort like there is in Jaws etc? What I would like to
do is to look around a popup screen or dialog window for example for text
which VO doesn't say.

Tia for your input!

Sincerely,

Ronald

I was also disappointed to learn this when I started using my Mac.
Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you, but I wanted to suggest that you
write to Duxbury. Knowing that there are those of us out there who would like
to see a Mac version, might hopefully encourage them to move forward with
developing one.

Apple Mail and Google

2010-11-09 Thread Linda Adams
Hi everyone,

Today I noticed my top level Gmail mailbox was collapsed. When I expanded it
I found over 6,000 messages in my "All Mail" folder. Of course, the very same
messages had already been in my Inbox or my Macvisionaries mail box and had
already been read and deleted.

Is there a way to delete all of them in one fell swoop. When I switched to
thread mode, there are still over 1,000. I checked the menus and elsewhere but
found nothing to empty a specific mailbox?

Also, is it possible to just prevent messages going to 2 mailboxes at the
same time or delete this "All Mail" mailbox or is that not advisable?

As always, thanks for your information and advice.

Linda

Re: any way to send .brf files to my juliette?

2010-11-09 Thread erik burggraaf
The only problem with getting duxbury systems to develop... Well, there are a
few actually.

One, they've got nothing and would have to start from scratch. That would be
fine, except we've already got louis and IBraille. IBraille is probably only
going to work with index embossers if they ever get off their asses and update
it, but at least the groundwork is done.

Louis looks great except for one thing. I can't find any documentation on it.
That's not so good, but if I can ever get my head around it, it should work
with a wide range of embossers, as well as intergrating with text edit and
other mac software. So that's not useless once we figure out how to use it.

Two, duxbury systems is going to want to charge the earth for translation
software. They are still back in the dark ages of technology and assuming that
governments and rehab agencies will continue to fund outrageously expensive
technologies indefinitely. Fact of the matter is, computer funding here in
Ontario just got cut in half, and in two years time funding for major windows
screen readers is more than likely going to be either severely restricted or
cut altogether thanks to the effectiveness of systems like mac OS, vinux, and
NVDA.

I'm not really hip to the idea of duxbury systems starting now and spending two
or three years on development only to see funding slashed and have 80 percent
of our blind people end up unable to afford it. I think we should make what we
have work, since the development has already been done and the solutions are
either free or low cost. That's why a lot of us switched to mac after all. We
were tired of getting soaked for thousands of dollars on proprietary reading
and writing aids when off the shelf systems are working just as well nowadays.

hardly enough. Now the 13 incher goes up to 256 G; LOL I just wrote K

I just cannot say enough about this Air! but just as in the windows
world a netbook is sexy, it might not be for everyone. However, it
 surely is for me.

I will find out more about methodologies for updating the OS; I'm not
concerned, because I still have a macBook Pro to which I can hook the
Air, but I realize I am unique perhaps in that, so I will find out and
let folks know what I learn unless somebody else already knows how to do
 it for sure.

If you can get your juliet plugged in and working, you should be able to send

figure out how this works myself because I want to be able to support it, but I

  Hi everyone,

Today I noticed my top level Gmail mailbox was collapsed. When I expanded
it I found over 6,000 messages in my "All Mail" folder. Of course, the very
same messages had already been in my Inbox or my Macvisionaries mail box and
had already been read and deleted.

  Linda

Re: Apple Mail and Google

2010-11-09 Thread David Hole

Hi Linda.
I'll just add that the reason for this "All Mail"-folder is that this
folder is where all mails ends when you click Archive when using the
web-interface in gmail.
I don't know how much you know about how gmail handles mail, but in
short, the folders is known as labels. When a mail is found only in "All
Mail", it means that it has no labels. Inbox for example, is a label,
like the one you have called Macvisionaries when using Google terminology.

Re: garage band 11 some simple step by steps?

2010-11-09 Thread Slau Halatyn
Keep in mind, also, that there's a hardware controller specifically made for
GarageBand which, I think, is made by M-Audio but I don't recall for sure. At
any rate, it used to be sold in the Apple Store so there would be a good place
to look first. Its layout is modeled after the GarageBand interface and it's
just a little quicker to reach for a hardware control sometimes rather than
navigating the interface with a screen reader. It's not that expensive either—I
seem to recall it being somewhere around $99 or even less.

HTH,

Re: any way to send .brf files to my juliette?

2010-11-09 Thread erik burggraaf
No, that won't work. You need the louis package so that your mac knows what
the formatting in your brf file actually means. Although I think their might
be a way to set things up so that if you had Louis installed you could do a
translate and emboss on the fly from text edit. That's just speculation
though. I have louis here, but despite the fact that the download page states
the program contains full documentation, the program isn't more than about 5 or
10 percent documented at best.

So please clarify for me. Are you at a point where you can see your juliet
embosser as a printer on your mac, to where it would actually give you the
choice to send files to the juliet in text edit? What little documentation
there is states very clearly that only serial and bluetooth embossers are
supported. USB embossers are not supported. It makes no mention of devices
installed as network printers. My guess is that it won't fly, but I'm not a
developer, just a lowly computer trainer trying to self-teach with no equipment
and no documentation.

re: how do i send brf files to my juliet embosser:

2010-11-09 Thread Chenelle Hancock
hi eric, alison, sara and marlana,
I also wanted to know if one could use their romeo embosser or their juliet
embosser with a mb or an mb pro along with dux berry software. I recollect when
I first received my romeo embosser this past january along with dux berry. i
thought it said that it would compatible with the mack.. i could be wrong but
if anyone wants i will look into it further today by calling duxbery myself to
enquire about this dilemma of sorts. then i will let you guys know what i find
out afterwards.
sincerely, chenelle take care everyone.

Re: Apple Mail and Google

2010-11-09 Thread Darcy Burnard
Linda, are you using pop or imap with gmail? If you're using imap, you can
have gmail just not show you the all mail folder. I can't remember the name of
it, but there is a google labs feature you enable that gives you more control
over what mailboxes are shown with imap. This is what I did, and I don't see
the all mail folder.
There's a great article from tidbits on how best to set up gmail with mac mail.
Here is the url.

2010-11-09 Thread heather kd5cbl
If you don't want windows near the apple, perhaps you can buy a cheap
computer from good will to do this. That is the only solution besides
running fusion. I know they have some cheap computers, think laptops, from
tiger direct for 50 dollars, crazy! If that is the only thing you need,
guess that would do! Heather

I am downloading Louie right now.
On Nov 9, 2010, at 8:16 AM, erik burggraaf wrote:

My guess is that it won't fly, but I'm not a
developer, just a lowly computer trainer trying to self-teach with no equipment
and no documentation.

how to send an brf file to my juliet:

hi eric, marlin, sara and alison:

I wanted to let you all know that i just got off of the phone with a db

the mack in order to use db at all. so that means that everyone that wants to
use it has to either use their booth camp or purchase fusion on their mb. i
hope this helps.
also they explained to me at one time that they did in fact, have a vergin of
db for the mack but when they went over to mac o.s. 10 that is when they had
decided to discontinue it. but they did say that they would be willing to
create a vergin in the near future for the mack in it was necessary to do so.

Hi Marlaina,

Do you know about the software product, "MoveAddict"? It allows you
to cut and paste files in Finder, and also allows you to merge folders
instead of replacing them. This was a MacUpdate promo offer at the
end of October, and you can still purchase it at a lesser discount for
$6.49 from the mupromo site for the next 3 and a half days:

Here's a link to the MacWorld review of MoveAddict:

Note that if you purchase from the MacUpdate promo site, you'll need

You can go to the Solona web site for tools to help you negotiate this:

Re: acquisition

2010-11-09 Thread John Panarese
The last time I tried it, it was not. You can't read any of the
information about the files either available or that you download. It shows up
as tables, but there are a lot of "unknown" areas and very little information
that makes it even partially usable. Unless there is a current version that
has changed things, I was very disappointed. I was used to using Emule on the
Windows side, but have yet to find a Mac alternative.

Intro - soon to be new MAC user

2010-11-09 Thread Vince Mistretta
Hi all,

Some of you may already recognize me from several other technology
discussion lists and others may not.

Well, I took the plunge last evening and ordered an iMac which
hopefully will be here tomorrow. After moving over to the apple IOS
platform for communications back this past January, I've been
impressed with Apples commitment to produce more accessibility in
their products. I made the decision to move to the MAC OSX platform
because of many recent events in the audio and music territory but am
impressed with other new actions coming about like bringing gestures
to navigation to all MAC users.

Unfortunately, I will not be totally leaving the PC/Windows
environment since my job as a Software Development Manager requires me
to use that platform since the agency I work for is strict on it's
standards. Because of this, I have to keep Windows available at home
- either running under Fusion or on my old run down XP Pro machine or
even both. I felt it was important for me to move to the MAC at this
time to experience all the new comings from Apple as they come out now
in each release of OSX and versions of software such as the iLife 11
products - particularly GarageBand and it's new found accessibility.

I've joined this group to hopefully learn more about techniques,
available accessible software and maybe get back in touch with some
old aquaintences I noticed are members on this list.

I look forward to learning a new platform and learning from all of you.

Best,
Vince

Accessible Medical apps for travelers [was Re: iPhone translation apps]

2010-11-09 Thread Esther

Hi Brian,

On a different topic, if you travel frequently to Latin America (or
elsewhere), you might be interested in the mPassport series of apps
that provide medical information for English speakers traveling
abroad. They provide information on emergency medical services --
locations and contact information for doctors, dentists, hospitals,
and pharmacies. Currently, all these apps are free. The information is
tied in to the GPS functions of your iPhone, so you can locate support
that is close to you. Now, even though the locations do not currently
match your travel destination (e.g. they currently cover Mexico City,
Lima, Buenos Aires, and Quito), there are some really useful
functions, one of them being the Medical Translations section. With
an internet connection, you can use the links to hear the phrases
pronounced. However, the rest of the app functions without requiring
an internet connection, so you can look up either medical phrases or
medical terms (either under English or Spanish listings) and also
search for terms under either language. You could simply switch
VoiceOver to Spanish to listen to the terms pronounced. And however
fluent you may be, your Spanish is probably not up to a detailed
discussion of medical conditions and symptoms! There's also a history
function so that you can look up questions or phrases and save them,
then access them easily when you need to. Even for countries where
Medical Translations are not available (either because the language is
English, as in London, or places like Tokyo where they don't have the
Japanese transcriptions) these guides are very useful because they
give drug equivalencies. That means that even if you don't have a
medical emergency and want access to a list of doctors, dentists, etc.
(many of whom are checked to speak English), you might want to use
this app to find an equvalent over the counter drug to buy at a
pharmacy, and to use the app to find out which pharmacies are near you
and what their hours are. The mPassport apps are available
internationally. You can read an old review of mine about the first
mPassport Paris and mPassport London apps:

http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg17672.html
(Accessible traveler's medical apps for iPhone/iPod Touch: mPassport
Paris and mPassport London, free for limited time)

The main change from the original release is that they made the
medical translations section use the internet for the spoken phrases
in order to cut down on the app size, and the apps are now available
internationally. There are 26 of them available at present, covering
all parts of the world.

Hi Dean and Brian,

I haven't wanted to weigh in with a suggestion for a Spanish
translation

app, since I have only rudimentary knowledge of Spanish, but if you're
looking for a translation app that runs through Google Translate
(with all
the usual limitations and caveats about machine translation and the
need to
use this through an internet connection), I can certainly recommend
a more
accessible alternative, with more features, at least based on my

the description of iTranslate - Spanish from Bizmosis, Inc. I'll
describe

three apps:
iTranslate -- the universal translator (free, but $1.99 to buy a voice
through in-app purchase to have translations read out with text to
speech) by Sonico GmbH, iSpeak Spanish ($1.99) by FutureApps, and
Trippo

Voice Translator Plus (free for text-to-text translations, free trial
text-to-speech use for 14 days, extendable by in-app purchase;
$4.99 for permanent license) by Cellictica. All three are available
internationally, and probably one the first two would be best suited
for
Brian's translation needs. I'm going to cc this to the
Macvisionaries list,
since it may be of wider interest, e

WebKit vs. Safari

2010-11-09 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi folk,

I wanted to bounce a few thoughts around here. I've used both Safari and
Webkit, and in my own experience, Safari seems much more stable. It does have
some issues with VO, but those all seem pretty predictable to me, and I can
work around them by either reloading the page or reloading VO. Webkit seems to
crash on a fair number of sites, many of which I use often. (NHL, MLB, for
example).

Does anyone on the list work with the developers and Webkit to post bug
reports, etc.? As far as I can tell, this would be the only reason I can see
for using webkit over Safari.

What does anybody think?

AppleScript to move files [was Re: problem moving files to another folder]

2010-11-09 Thread Esther

Hi David,

Yes, I use the original Automator script that Greg Kearney wrote quite
a long time ago (when he was still in the U.S. and could host a web
site listing the accessibility of VoiceOver compatible software).
However, since that site is long gone, your best bet to get a "Move"
script is to go to the English version of the site of the Italian Mac
User group that Rossy maintains at:

http://www.universalaccess.it/script-english/

Then get the "move" script. And speaking of useful AppleScripts that
are about to go away, if you have not yet picked up the "RestartAt"
AppleScript that allows you move to an arbitrary time in any iTunes
track (music, audiobook, podcast, movie, etc.), I would do so now from
Tim Kilburn's VoiceOver Downloads page at:

http://homepage.mac.com/kilburns/voiceover/downloads.html

before it goes off-line TODAY with all the other original dot Mac
homepages. The alternative is browsing in the Mail Archive pages for
the old list and trying to read, copy, and paste it all from one of my
very old posts.

Cheers,

Esther

Vinux and Mac OS

2010-11-09 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Folk,

I wouldn't blame someone for insisting this is off-topic, and if so, I
apologize. I'm trying to find a simple way for Vinux to live on my Mac Mini.
The live CD is too limited and the audio doesn't seem to work in any case. I
can't afford Fusion right now, and I've done a free trial already. I'm kind of
afraid to mess up my hard drive by attempting a dual-boot system with Boot
Camp, but I will consider it. Using a USB thumb drive would be the most
appealing to me, but I haven't found a way to create a Mac-bootable disk.

If anyone can give me pointers on their own experiences with any of these
methods, please contact me offlist if you wish.

Thanks,
Teresa

Hi!

I'm on the developers list for Webkit. I'd be curious to see your crash
reports, as well as extracts from the site which you say causes crashes in
Webkit.

First, do you remember to update frequently? I have never actually seen Webkit
crash, and not even on those sites particularly. I have seen it once or twice,
and I've been using it for more than a year now. I'm curious about your take on
this, as Safari seems to crash much more than Webkit in my case and seems to

Re: blind note takers vs the mack book family products:Hi mary and marlana,

2010-11-09 Thread Joshua Loya
I tend to agree with Scott. An iPad, with a Bluetooth keyboard is much less
expensive than a blindness specific note taker, and Mike Calvo reviewed a
particularly nice case on a recent Serotek Podcast.
An iPad may mostly be a media consumption device for our sighted counterparts,
but, with the right accessories, it is a viable alternative to overpriced
blindness specific products.

Re: garage band 11 some simple step by steps?

2010-11-09 Thread John André Netland
Most likely you have to make sure you have your cursors focused on the region
and press control-option-shift-space to mouse click it before you do the
command-T split.

Hope this helps,
John André

Re: iPhone translation apps [was Re: English-Spanish translation redux]

2010-11-09 Thread Antonio M. Guimaraes Jr.
Hello Esther,

I have downloaded iTranslate, and am unable to switch the from and to
languages. I only see a typing qwerty and cancel button on the bottom half of
the screan, and no settings buttons.

The imgSpeakerTouch buttons are dimmed. The same goes for the English and Greek
buttons. I am only able to do any translation from English to Greek, if any at
all.

The switch language button is also dimmed, and I am left with something that
does not function very well at present.

Are there suggestions from you on how to make this work?

Sincerely,

Antonio Guimaraes

Hi Marlaina:
Sometimes, a link simply won't work in a message. When this occurs, best to
employ the data detector. Position your cursor at the start of the link, press
vo-shift-m. This brings up a context menu which includes open link and several

Hi again,

What kind of controller would you mainly use for this?

I have a corgg nano control pad, an akai mpd26, and about to get a contour
shuttle pro for editing.

I would like to use this on both garage band and logic pro, the latter as i am
currently taking classes on it.

I know the accessibility isn't great on it, mainly for lack of feedback when
moving around the arrangement window.

Anyway, there's an interesting part on velocity settings in the score window,
gotta unplug :)

Hi Carolyn,

Generally, I place the cursor on the link which is spoken as such in VO. VO
space generally works. If it doesn't, I find if I return to the spot and try
again, it will generally work the second time.

dropbox and file-up/download history

2010-11-09 Thread William Windels
Hi all,
I have installed dropbox on my macbook, a windows-computer and my iphone.

Also, I have shared some folders with other users.

As I understand well, a sighted user can see when and which files are uploaded.

Can we have a history of that (offline)?

I have seen something about rss but this is perhaps not for the changes in my
dropbox?

So my question:
Can we, as voiceover users, be informed about changes in our dropbox because of
other users?
I would like to receive a message or popup on my macbook without going online
my self.

Thanx alot for your answers,

William

Re: how does one transfer previous downloaded music from either your external hard drive and your i-phone 3 gs to your mb pro?Hi everyone:

2010-11-09 Thread Joshua Loya
I had a number of music files on a Windows desktop that I wanted to transfer to
my MB Pro. This is what I did.

1. I connected to my Windows desktop via my home network. Assuming you have set
up a network properly, you can view what is available on your network by
pressing cmd-shift-k from within any Finder window. You may want to do this for
some of the music on your iPhone
, if the only location you have it backed up is on an internal drive in another
computer. Alternatively, connect your external drive to your MB Pro.

2. I navigated to the files I wanted to copy to the iTunes library on my Mac.

3. I selected them, and pressed cmd-c to copy the files to my clipboard.

4. In iTunes, I navigated to my music table, but did not interact with it.

5. I pressed cmd-v to paste the files I had copied to my clipboard.

Because I had not changed the default in iTunes of copying new files to the
iTunes music folder when importing new tracks, the tracked were simultaneously
imported into my iTunes library and copied to my MB Pro. Of course, there may
be a simpler way to do this if you have home sharing turned on, but I haven't
messed with that, and that wasn't an option for me, as I had needed to reformat
my main hard drive. Fortunately, my iTunes library was on a secondary internal
hard drive which was not affected by what ever went bad with that particular
machine.

long gone, your best bet to get a "Move" script is to go to the English version
of the site of the Italian Mac User group that Rossy maintains at:

http://www.universalaccess.it/script-english/

Then get the "move" script. And speaking of useful AppleScripts that are about
to go away, if you have not yet picked up the "RestartAt" AppleScript that
allows you move to an arbitrary time in any iTunes track (music, audiobook,
podcast, movie, etc.), I would do so now from Tim Kilburn's VoiceOver Downloads
page at:

http://homepage.mac.com/kilburns/voiceover/downloads.html

before it goes off-line TODAY with all the other original dot Mac homepages.
The alternative is browsing in the Mail Archive pages for the old list and
trying to read, copy, and paste it all from one of my very old posts.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: garage band 11 some simple step by steps?

2010-11-09 Thread Yuma Decaux
The sequencer is called big beat. That one is also simply inaccessible as of
now, but i have found two concordant ways to make it possibly entirely
accessible.

1-the extensive keyboard shortcut list. By default there are about 320 key
bindings on a list of 1200 available functions, from timeline editing to mixing
to preferences shortcuts.

2-THere is a logic script bundle made by a uk blind man which allows for voice
feedback for all the inaccessible parts of logic pro.

It requires quickeys, a shortcut creator similar to keyboard maestro, and
though logic 9 compatibility hasn't been journaled, it might be an alley.

So this is where i'm getting to Right now, and i don't think i need to stay in
this course anymore as i've gotten a very good bird
S eye view of the program.

Re: iPhone translation apps [was Re: English-Spanish translation redux]

2010-11-09 Thread Esther

Hello Antonio,

If you have double tapped in the "Translate from" text box to enter text, then either flicking right or doing a two finger flick down "Read
all" should give you an "IMG speaker touch, dimmed" button in the top right corner, followed by buttons for "Cancel",
"Clear", and "Translate" (appearing from left to right, across the center of your iPhone, just above the virtual keyboard in the bottom
half of the sceen).  You'll need to exit this screen by double tapping either the "Cancel" or "Translate" buttons to return to the main
screen.
"Cancel" returns you to the main screen without erasing what you have typed, but doesn't perform the translation.  "Translate" will return you to the main screen, and attempt to do a translation between your selected languages so that the translated text shows up in the text box in the bottom half of the
screen.  If your text box is empty, either "Cancel" or "Translate" should take you back to the starting screen.  The "Button Switch Lang" and the "Translate from" and "to" language buttons are announced as dimmed, but will work if you double tap them. This seems to be a common
problem, with apps, because VoiceOver doesn't update the status of the read buttons. First choose the "from" and "to" translation languages by double tapping.  The default "from" language is set to English and the default "to" language is set to German. If you flick right across the app
you'll hear, "Translate from", "English, dimmed", "Text field, double tap to edit", "IMG speaker touch, dimmed, button", "Enter text or swipe to paste", "Button switch lang, dimmed", "to", "German, dimmed", "Text field, double tap to
edit", "IMG speaker touch, dimmed, button", "IMG action touch, dimmed, button", "Button Info big, dimmed."  (This is for the free version of the app). To change the translation language(s), double tap on the language (e.g., "German"), then touch the bottom half of the screen,  You'll
hear "Picker item, adjustable, swipe up or down to adjust the value".

There seems to be a bug in the current version of the free iTranslate app in that the languages are not announced when you swipe up or down the picker item wheel  This is correctly announced to VoiceOver in the
iTranslate for iPad version of the app. (Since I haven't changed my settings on the iPod Touch for some time, I didn't catch this). The languages on the picker item wheel are in alphabetical order, and I'll paste them
in from the program description: Afrikaans, Albanian, Arabic, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, Galician,
German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Italian, Irish, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Malay, Maltese, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian,
Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Tagalog, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Welsh, Yiddish.  It's a hack, but what I would do is find the language you want from the list.  So, say that you want the
"translate to" language to be Spanish instead of German.  You'd have to move down 10 more spaced from "Greek".  After double tapping "German" (or, in your case, "Greek"), I would
touch the bottom half of the screen to hear "picker item, adjustable".  Then I would set the rotor to "Adjust value" and flick up 10 times.  Then I would double tap the "Set Language"
button in the center of the screen..  If you then flick right or touch the right side of the screen near the center, you'll hear the new language, which should be "Spanish". If you double tap the "button
switch lang, dimmed" button, the top of the screen should read, "Translate from", "Spanish, dimmed", and after the "Button switch lang" you'll hear "to" "English,
dimmed".

The "IMG speaker touch" buttons do not function unless there is text in the
text box to be spoken.  If you want VoiceOver to announce the text, you'll need to set
the language rotor to that language (e.g., Spanish).

The normal sequence, after you have set up your translate from and to languages, is to double tap in the top text box, bring up the virtual keyboard,
and enter the text you want translated.  When you're done typing, double tap the "Translate" button at the right side of the screen, just
above the virtual keyboard. You'll be returned to the main screen.  Touch the translated text in the box at the bottom half of the screen.  If you
want to purchase a voice to read this out in the translated language, flick right to the "IMG speaker touch, button" and double tap.  A
text-to-speech screen will come up that lists the language options with the instructions "Click to hear a sample". Flick to the name of the
voice you want to sample and double tap to play the sample.  If you want to buy a voice through in app purchase, flick right to the $1.99 button and
double tap. To leave the screen, double tap the "Done" button in th

Re: Intro - soon to be new MAC user

2010-11-09 Thread Eric Oyen
hello Vince.
I am also glad that I took the mac plunge last year. I did it quite a bit
before the onset of total blindness. I went from reading large print to
listening to my screen. the funny thing was, I was already looking at voiceover
because I was getting nasty headaches from trying to read large print. all it
took for me to switch from one to another was a 2 finger combo (command+F5).
after onset, I was exclusively in read screen mode by ear. I haven't slowed
down much. I have had to get a helper app for some apps that aren't entirely
accessible. other than that, its been well worth the $800 I paid for the used
mac and the $29.00 for te OS X 10.6 install disk. on the whole, thats still
cheaper than a windows box+OS+jaws.

Welcome VInce. You're going to love your Mac. I love mine. It can take some
getting used to, but once you get the hang of things, you'll be amazed at how
quickly you can get things done.

Hi,

Thanks for that new input.

Does the drag and drop operation still maintain in the new garage band version?
Or is there now a function to place it directly into the timeline?

Best regards,
