Re: password not ticking!

2010-10-21 Thread Colin M
Hi Joe!
Sorry I should of said that I've got my mouse cursor following my vo cursor!
You can set this in vo settings with vo+f8 and interact with the table and go
to navigation!
If you do not want to do this and presuming you do not have mouse cursor
following your vo cursor!
Before doing the mouse click use vo+command+f5 to bring the mouse cursor to vo
cursor, then do the mouse click!
And also just in case it might be this try interacting with the field first
before trying the mouse click thing, to see if you can put your pass word in
then, if that does not work then try the mouse click thing!

Adding and Modifying groups in the address book

2010-10-21 Thread Paul Hunt
Hello Esther. Thanks so much for your help with the address book. To rename
a group, I just arrow to it, turn voiceover off press enter and thpe the new
name. Then when I turn voiceover on it's changed. It doesn't matter if I
have any cards in the group. I don't kno whether the feedback should go to
the address book team or the accessibility team.

Subject: Re: Something weird with the Adress Book..

Hi David,

I haven't been following this thread, but if your initial problem was not
being able to read your Address Book, and you tried to solve it by creating
a new user account, it sounds to me as though the original problem was that
the preferences for your Address Book got corrupted. A corrupted plist file
is the second most common source of problems on the Mac (although it's far
less common than having to repair permissions, which is the first most
common fix that most users will have to do). Since the way this affects
your application can be quite diverse, the most common way of checking that
the problem is specific to your account, and not a bug in the application,
is to do what you've done, and try to run the application from another
account. If the application works without problems, then there's some
local setting in your account that is the source of the problem -- most
likely your preferences file for this app, since this is individual to each
user.

The fix is to go to your Library/Preferences folder and look for some file
containing the application name. From your home directory (Command-Shift-H),
you can use the Command-Shift-G "Go to Folder" shortcut in Finder, and type
or paste in:

Library/Preferences

into the dialog window that pops up, and then press return, to navigate to
your folder.

In this case the likely files are com.apple.AddressBook.plist and
com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist. (I think the "abd" stands for "Address
Book data". If you're having trouble updating the address book information,
that might be the applicable file, but either of the two could be
responsible.) While your Address Book application closed, copy one or both
of these files to another location, like your Desktop or any other folder,
and delete the versions of these files that are in your Library/Preferences
folder. Launch your Address Book application and check to see whether the
problems have gone away. If the Mac does not find a plist file for an
application when you open it, your system will create a new plist file with
the default preference settings. If your app now works, one of the two files
was corrupted. To find out which one, and get your preferences back, quit
Address Book and delete one of the new versions of a file, like
com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist from your Preferences Library and copy back
the original version that you saved to your Desktop or other location. Then
launch Address Book again, and check whether things are still working.

Because plist files hold your preferences for using an application, they're
opened and closed every time you access that application. This is why it's
possible for the file to become corrupted if you exit in an odd way -- most
times things are OK, but these files are opened and saved so many times that
there's a small chance that they won't be closed correctly and become
corrupted if you use an application frequently enough over a long enough
time.

There's also an old software (freeware) program called Preferential
Treatment that can check for corrupted plist files:

http://www.jonn8.com/html/pt.html

However, usually by the time you have this problem, you end up doing the fix
by hand. HTH.

Cheers,

Esther

HI,

I DO have one and really like it in general - it gets rid of the need to
have a separate note taker because of its portability - it is very
robust inspite of its size.

The limitation I find is memory space - I can't keep all my files and
itunes stuff on it - I did get one when they first came out however, and
apple may have increased memory capacity.

I use it with an external hard drive and it works great

No one's going to have one of these since they were only released yesterday.

I personally don't really see the point; it's a portable mac with very
mid range specs with a good battery. It's apples answer to the netbook
except you could by 3 netbooks for the same price as one of these.

Hi.

If someone has face time on their I phone 4, and another person has a I Pod
touch Gen, can the one with the I Phone 4 call the other person call the I Pod
4 Gen using the person's E-mail?

Kawal.

Hi.

I tried it yesterday too, it is easy to use, and in my opinion the sound is

Correct,

You would have to initiate facetime with the owner of the 4th gen iPod touch
via their e-mail

If you go to apple.com and search for the term "facetime" you will find
that the first link that comes up is Facetime for the mac. Click on that,
and then there will be several headings talking about what you can do.
Eventually, there is a frame that says something like Choose a download
site or choose a download link or something like that. Interact with that
frame, and you'll find a download facetime button. Press it. Then, you'll
 be downloading the dmg file.
After it's done, open it, and run the installer app. Then go to the
applications folder and run the app. It will ask you to sign in with your
Apple ID. Once you do that, it will ask you which email address you want
to use for people to contact you via facetime. Tell it, and it may ask you
to verify the address with your apple ID if they're not the same and
sometimes if they are. Once that's done, you're good to go. You needn't
even have the app running and open to receive facetime calls.

 Friendly,
 Chris

Re: Introducing the new MacBook Air.

2010-10-21 Thread Chris Moore
You would not get the Mac OS or VoiceOver on a netbook. Also netbooks are more
under powered then the Macbook Air and tend to have smaller keyboards and do
not have track pad gestures.

Other netbooks will not have the same build quality either. The Macbook is a
fantastic note taker and offers instant on which you will not find on other
netbooks / sub notebooks.

I had hoped it would have been a fraction cheaper and come with a minimum of
128GB, but am sure this will be the case in the not so distant future.

I personally am very excited by the device and love the direction Apple are
going, but I think I will wait until the next release.

Re: Introducing the new MacBook Air.

2010-10-21 Thread Ricardo Walker
The price is really driven up by the solid state hard drive. Those are still
very expensive. You also have the build quality. almost every netbook I've
come across feels cheap and flimsy. They also use inferior parts. This might
not be a big factor to most but, Macs retain their value way better than
windows PCs. Just something to think about.

Re: Teaching Mac to sighted people

2010-10-21 Thread Esther

Hi Simon,

When you have entered your credit card information, route your mouse
to the "Continue" button (with VO-Command-F5, if you do not have your
mouse cursor set to track your VoiceOver cursor) and use VO-Shift-
Space to click the button. You'll be taken to a "Confirm Order" page
which should contain your STANZACAT discount, if you entered the
coupon code earlier. Click the "Finish Order" button to complete your
transaction.

If you ever encounter a situation where a button press does not seem
to "take" with VO-Space, try clicking the button. Technically, VO-
Space should perform the default action for any situation, which in
this case is to click the button. There are some cases where VO-Shift-
Space (which I refer to as a "software click") does not work, but
where clicking with your trackpad or mouse button ("hardware clicks")
will work. Remember to first route your mouse cursor to your
VoiceOver cursor before you press your trackpad key (or the whole
trackpad in recent MacBook models) or mouse button to click, if you
have not set your mouse cursor to track your VoiceOver cursor in
VoiceOver Utility. Pressing the "5" key on the numeric keypad with
Numpad Commander turned on also counts as a "hardware click"; it will
work in those same cases where clicking a mouse or trackpad works when
VO-Shift-Space and VO-Space do not work to click a button.

Incidentally, I've read that you can now purchase the O'Reilly eBooks
in iBooks, but I don't think that you get the DAISY and PDF versions
of the book when you do so, and I don't believe you can use any
discount codes. The eBook bundle purchases you make directly from the
O'Reilly site should also update if there are any minor revisions or
corrections, or additional eBook formats made available.

Hi Simon,

You can purchase a DRM-free, ePub version of "Mac OS X Snow Leopard:
The Missing Manual" by David Pogue from O'Reilly's eBooks. They
sell their
eBooks in multi-format bundles that include PDF files that you can
read in
Preview and ePub versions that you can add to your iTunes Library
and read

in iBooks on your iPad (or iPhone or iPod Touch under
iOS 4). They also have "Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual,
Snow Leopard Edition" by the same author. All the O'Reilly books are
available through Bookshare.org, internationally, although the annual
subscription for users outside of the U.S. is probably the cost of
buying
the book from O'Reilly in an eBook bundle that includes an ePub
version.

Here's their web site:

http://oreilly.com/ebooks/

You'll need to create an account with log in for your purchases.
Once you
buy the eBook bundle, you'll have access to multiple formats of the
book

from your log in account. They'll also tell you if the book has been
updated. I'm not sure if this is still valid, but they ran a
promotion for

eBook purchases in connection with the iPhone (Stanza
app) last year, and the coupon code "STANZACAT" on checkout gave a 40%
discount.

Re: Adding and Modifying groups in the address book

2010-10-21 Thread Esther

Hi Paul,

You're welcome, but just to clarify for other list members, your
earlier posted question about Address Book (sent off list directly to
me) was about the problem of renaming groups that are created under
Address Book. And I have to give credit for this solution to Ray
Foret (aka "The Constantly Barefooted Ray"). Your feedback should go
to the accessibility team (accessibil...@apple.com).

The message quoted below, while also about problems encountered using
the Address Book, is a different problem, in which David suddenly lost
the ability to add new fields or remove contacts in the Address Book
on his Mac, where previously this was possible. When he created a
brand new account, he was able to make these modifications again, so
the likely answer is that a file containing the Address Book
preferences for his original user account has gotten corrupted, and
deleting the file from his Library/Preferences folder should solve his
problem. I'm giving this brief summary, because since David's
original post, various other list members have chimed in with
different individual problems having to do with the Address Book on
both the Mac and on the iPhone, and I found it difficult to follow the
thread of the discussion, which also migrated across to a second list.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Subject: Re: Something weird with the Adress Book..

Hi David,

I haven't been following this thread, but if your initial problem
was not being able to read your Address Book, and you tried to solve
it by creating a new user account, it sounds to me as though the
original problem was that the preferences for your Address Book got
corrupted. A corrupted plist file is the second most common source
of problems on the Mac (although it's far less common than having to
repair permissions, which is the first most common fix that most
users will have to do). Since the way this affects your application
can be quite diverse, the most common way of checking that the
problem is specific to your account, and not a bug in the
application, is to do what you've done, and try to run the
application from another account. If the application works without
problems, then there's some local setting in your account that is
the source of the problem -- most likely your preferences file for
this app, since this is individual to each user.

The fix is to go to your Library/Preferences folder and look for
some file containing the application name. From your home directory
(Command-Shift-H), you can use the Command-Shift-G "Go to Folder"
shortcut in Finder, and type or paste in:

Library/Preferences
into the dialog window that pops up, and then press return, to
navigate to your folder.
In this case the likely files are com.apple.AddressBook.plist and
com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist. (I think the "abd" stands for
"Address Book data". If you're having trouble updating the address
book information, that might be the applicable file, but either of
the two could be responsible.) While your Address Book application
closed, copy one or both of these files to another location, like
your Desktop or any other folder, and delete the versions of these
files that are in your Library/Preferences folder. Launch your
Address Book application and check to see whether the problems have
gone away. If the Mac does not find a plist file for an application
when you open it, your system will create a new plist file with the
default preference settings. If your app now works, one of the two
files was corrupted. To find out which one, and get your
preferences back, quit Address Book and delete one of the new
versions of a file, like com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist from your
Preferences Library and copy back the original version that you
saved to your Desktop or other location. Then launch Address Book
again, and check whether things are still working.

Because plist files hold your preferences for using an application,
they're opened and closed every time you access that application.
This is why it's possible for the file to become corrupted if you
exit in an odd way -- most times things are OK, but these files are
opened and saved so many times that there's a small chance that they
won't be closed correctly and become corrupted if you use an
application frequently enough over a l

It just interoperates better with the IPod and IPhone, the controls are more

How's that?

Asus is the way to go. Someting like the 1201PN or even the 1008HA if you want
really small. You have to buy jfw or Window-Eyes though so you might as well
buy the Apple unless you need windows natively. I wouldn't trade out my Asus
for anything, it's a great netbook.

Re: windows and the mac?

2010-10-21 Thread erik burggraaf
Hum, Well, you could try command enter for full screen mode, which does
essentially the same thing as command G to grab input. You might also make
sure quick nav is turned off during your windows session. You can also set up
a key to mute voiceover speech if you like. Personally, I just find it easier
to turn VO off. I mean, It's not as if it takes an insufferably long period of
time to start back up again. Plus that frees up the control and alt keys to be
pressed together in your windows session.

Hope this helps,

Hi Esther,
Sometimes when I am doing things on the Mac mini it'll say busy. then it'll
show a blank line or something. then after I press keys it'll say busy
again. What's this with the busy? I used to see it quite a bit before I
turned off airport. Thanks.

Re: ilife 11

2010-10-21 Thread ISAAC OBIE
This morning while I was at the Apple store, I heard there was a guy there
who is in accessibility. He started asking me questions, but since I didn't
have my equipment setup for this, I just couldn't follow him. I was told
that he was in accessibilities. I started to tease him cause that's what I
do sometimes when I can't understand things. but I'll see him again and I'll
try to learn more next time.

Re: Mac question

2010-10-21 Thread ISAAC OBIE

Hi Claus,
The reason why I disabled Airport is because if I don't it will be searching
for a connection and I don't have a connection that it needs to find at
home. I have one in class. But when I leave class and go home, I don't want
Airport searching for a connection and thus possibly messing up my
connection to a wired network. It seems to work better with a wired
connection for now until I become a more advanced Apple user. Try disabling
Airport and see how your connection goes. the idea to turn off Airport was
mine, seconded by my instructor.

Hi Claus!
If your in a list of lets say emails about 3000 or so and you want to go to
either top or bottom!
Just press option+up or down arrows [ it might do a mac bong but don't let that
stop you]
And on a web page if you are using an fn key to go to the beginning or end [
this one is a bit of a finger hogger]
You press vo+fn+shift+either left [ to go to the beginning] or right arrow [ to
go to end]
some one else might have a better way!

Re: Mac question

2010-10-21 Thread Ray Foret Jr
I would have to dissagree.

I keep Airport on all the time, and, I never have any issues. When I connect
to a wired network, that connection takes over. when I browse wirelessly via
my AT&T U-verse connection, that takes over right away when I disconnect the
CAT 5 cable from my ethernet port. I always make sure, though, to stay loged
out of my wireless internet connection while I'm connected via CAT 5 cable.

When I do log in to my wireless, I always need to make sure to have the
"remember this network" unchecked. That way, just in case my Mac is stolen,
they thief can't get access to my internet connection.

image capture

2010-10-21 Thread Carolyn Haas
Hi guys:

Quick question: I'm wanting to try Abbyy fine reader, and downloaded a trial
version without problem. When I run Image Capture, even though the printer
works fine, (a canon Pixma 160) I'm getting a message of "no camera or scanner
connected." Is there anything i should try? Or, is this a no-go?

TIA for any info or ideas.

Re: a few VO commands I miss

2010-10-21 Thread Ricardo Walker
Correct,

I set up keyboard commander short cuts for this. For example, I now press
option 1 to go to the top of a webpage and option 2 to go to the bottom. I
have also set up a trackpad commander gesture for this. On the iPhone, a 4
finger swipe up or down brings you to the top and bottom of a page. So I made
the custom gesture command 4 finger swipe up/down to do the same. Just some
ideas.

HELP! Corrupted iTunes library in Windows!

2010-10-21 Thread David Hole

Hi folks
I need help here!
About 12 hours ago, I had to reboot my windows-machine.
Fter that I fired up iTunes.
In itunes there were a bunch of music that had lost their tags...
Everything from album and artist names and titles. All track-numbers and
album-numbers seemed to be there.
I don't know if the music it-self is somehow corrupted, but I hope
not... Maybe someone can say anything about this...?
Since the tags and stuff is messed up, also the folder and file-names
are totally messed up.

Is it possible in some ways to revert to something that works?

I'd like to add that I have a huge music library, and I've heard that
iTunes is bad at handling large libraries at all.

Hope that someone can help me out...
I'd be very pleased if so.
Kind regards David

Re: a few VO commands I miss

2010-10-21 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Claus,

to go to the beginning or end of wherever the VO focus is, it is just like you
mentioned:

VO-Home takes you to the first item in that screen.
VO-shift-Home takes you to the very first item, scrolling if necessary.
VO-End takes you to the last item in the current screen.
VO-shift-End takes you to the very last item scrolling if necessary.

Note that if you have interacted with an item, you'll only go to the first or
last item in that specific element such as a Table or List. Also note that
when using a laptop, the Home and End keys are accessed by pressing the FN key
(bottom right of the keyboard) with the left or right arrow keys respectively.

Hi,

I don't know this for a fact but, I would say it will support Lion. After

Importing music from iPhone into iTunes

2010-10-21 Thread Jenny Wood
Hello all. So I am very excited, and slightly intimidated...I finally took the
plunge and purchased a macbook pro last night. So far, I am loving it!
However, I am finding that much of what I learned on my older system does not
apply on my new one, which is a slight bummer. :-)
So one of my mission-critical projects was to get iTunes up and running.
Thankfully, my contacts, calendar, books and apps all synchronized perfectly.
My question is, is there a way to transfer music (not purchased from the iTunes
store), from the phone to the computer? I know windows requires the assistance
of a third-party program to achieve this, but it seems like I recall hearing at
some point, that you can accomplish this directly from within iTunes with a
mac. Of course, my memory isn't that great, so who knows... I would most
certainly appreciate any information you may have to offer. Thank you!

Jenny

2010-10-21 Thread Sarah Alawami
Hello. I've got a voicemail that won't go away. I double tap the voicemail but
it does not play. I called the voicemail number and got rid of it, but it is
still there. Any advice please? I even tried restoring from a back up. No joy.

This is normal. Apparently there is a lag time before the provider deletes
it from the system.

Re: an odd thing regarding voicemail and iphone

2010-10-21 Thread Sarah Alawami
I've never had that happen. Usually I change it to old by listening to it but
this time it won't play. so this thing is empty. Is there a way to clear all
visual voicemail from the visual voice mail part with out out listening to them
all?

Re: HELP! Corrupted iTunes library in Windows!

2010-10-21 Thread James Mannion
Have you investigated if you go to your music folder in windows, not
sure if you are using windows xp or windows 7 or something else. Under
vista based systems like win 7, if you type music in the windows start
menu search box it should bring up your music library. Under there
should be an itunes folder. Within the itunes folder there are several
sub folders, but the one labeled itunes media or something with the
word media in it should have subfolders for all of your stuff. There
are also some other folders at the same level as the media folder that
may be useful. Under XP I think it would be under my documents and my
music under there where you would find the itunes stuff.
