Isuu.com articles Accessible?

2010-09-11 Thread Teresa Cochran
Has anyone tried reading the articles presented on this website? I'm not sure
if they're flash or not. I have a partially-sighted friend that says VO will
read them, but whenever I go to one, I get "one error opening page" and no text
resembling the body of an article. You can pick any publication and article; I
tried five at random, so I'm pretty sure that'll work.

Thanks for any help,
Teresa

Re: Help forcing Mac to recognize a USB device

2010-09-11 Thread Jude DaShiell
On some systems, a command called update-usb-ids exists and has to be run
by root in terminal mode. That command when run goes out to a web site
and gets a current copy of a file that has all industry-standard usb ids
information in it. If the manufacturer of the device hasn't got their
information into that file, then they're beyond industry standards and
maybe best not recognized. Once that file gets updated on systems usually
more usb devices end up working suddenly. On Fri, 10 Sep 2010, Carolyn

 Carolyn and others,

I'm still looking for ideas. I have the unit attached directly to the
computer USB port not a hub. I went to disk utilities and was pleased to see
both the internal memory and SD card were in the table. I selected one of
these and tried to select Mount, but Mount was dimmed. Next thing I knew the
computer told me the Drive was ejected incorrectly and they disappeared from
the table.

I tried reconnecting the unit but now it is not recognized in the table. So
now what?

When I first hooked up the unit about four days ago it was not reliable but
would stay connected for 10 or 15 minutes. Now, almost nothing.

Thanks again for the disk utility tip and if anyone else has ideas I'd be
grateful.
By the way, I did ask the dealer, Independent Living Aids for help, but
nothing yet. Maybe they will still come through.

fixed my victor stream quite accidentally with about as much of a clue as that. Good luck.

While sending Maccessibility news on the list

Hi.

It would be nice if the whole news from Maccessibility was send to the list
instead just a preview. What do you all think? I find it pretty annoying to
read the first part of an interesting text and then I have to click the link to
open the website to read the rest of the news. I really like to receive the

just the half of it.

Re: While sending Maccessibility news on the list

2010-09-11 Thread Søren Jensen
I see it's an issue for dialup users if they pay for each mb they send and
receive. I didn't thought anyone used dialup connections anymore. f it really
does matter for dialup users if the maccessibility news is send like a preview
or if the whole news is being send, the news could be send in plane text so we
just have to copy the links into the webbrowser. If I was on a dialup
connection, I wouldn't subscribe to lists like this cause of the mount of
trafic each day. If dialup users use Imap in their mail client, it won't make
any difference because Imap doesn't download the mails to the computer.
I must say I don't see the reason for not sending the whole news out on the
list. If dialup users is the reason, I'll gladly come up with more salutions.

Also, some how, I seem to have suddenly sorted one of my mail boxes in reverse

anyone not quite willing to pull up the cash for the solid state

Not sure this is what you want but here goes:
1, select the first of your files,
2, interact with the list,
3, press control option shift f3 to turn cursor tracking off,
4, vo arrow to the next item of interest,
5 press vo command space to select it,
Continue with steps 4 and 5 untill all files of interest are selected.
You may press vo f6 to hear what is selected.
6, vo shift f3 to put cursor tracking on,

Act on the selection as desired.
This thanks to Barefoot Ray.

Re: Help forcing Mac to recognize a USB device

2010-09-11 Thread Eric Caron
Dear List,

I have received great advice from this and one other list.
I'm pretty sure at this point it is the device and not the Mac. And I suspect
there is nothing I can do at this end.

Below is a summery of what I tried based on list suggestions. Maybe this will
be useful to others in the future with related USB difficulty.

I tried the Milestone 312 on my old XP machine and it worked fine.
When I plug it in both the internal memory and SD card are recognized and fully
available.
I then tried again on the Mac, sometimes absolutely nothing happens but
occasionally the SD card will show up.
When the card shows up The finder acts strangely. When I move through the
browser it often gets locked up saying finder busy over and over.
The usual result is that it ends by saying Device ejected.
I was able one time to get to the utilities table and did notice that the one
category called Status was noted as unsupported.

I did try using another SD card and even no SD card but the results were the
same.
I also tried both USB ports on my Mac.

I also tried the original SD card in a external card reader on the Mac and it
worked correctly.

I really appreciate all this trouble shooting advice. It may not have solved
this problem but I'm sure it will be useful in future related situations.

I'd still appreciate ideas. But, I'm suspecting I will need to negotiate a
return with Independent Living Aids, USA.

If this community of tech savvy experienced users of macs and adaptive
equipment can't solve the issue then it is very likely a faulty device.

I'm told BONES has been contacted and is working on it, but I can't imagine
what they can do for me that this group has not all ready suggested.

Thank you all.

where are my created mailboxes?

2010-09-11 Thread John Sanfilippo
Hello,

I hope I have the right list. I've always been replying, rarely initiating a
thread.

I recently created mailboxes, using the on my mac option. So, I suppose these
mailbox folders are somewhere where I can access them, in or out of mail.

The thing is, I cannot find them and I do not find any thing in mail which
offers a way, certainly no quick way, of getting and viewing the contents of
these folders. Rather puzzled.

Help appreciated.

Unintentional Aliases and getting rid of them

2010-09-11 Thread Michael Busboom
Hi.

Sometimes, apparently only when I am in Finder, I'm accidentally entering a
keyboard combination that is generating Aliases to other things in my Finder
Window.

So here are my questions:

1. What keyboard combination creates Aliases and does this keyboard
combination create them, even if one isn't in Finder?

2. Why can't I seem to delete them?

I may be creating Aliases from outside Finder; I just don't really know for
sure.

Thanks for the enlightenment!

Mike

Hi Michael!
The command to make aliases is [ command+l ] I do not know why you would be

Or you are hitting it by mistake!
Why you can not delete them I do not know, I thought you just sat on it and

This is in no way an attempt to promote my podcast, but I just did one on

Re: where are my created mailboxes?

2010-09-11 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi.

If you stop interacting with messages, then vo left arrow to where it says mail
boxes. Interact with VO shift down arrow, scroll down, and you should see your
folders. Once you pick the desired folder, stop interacting with vo shift up
arrow. Then VO right and you should find the folder you want.

Reading messages in threads

2010-09-11 Thread Linda Adams
Hi,

I've recently switched to reading messages from this list in the thread format
and am liking the way it works. I have 2 questions. If there are messages
left on a thread and I don't need/want to read the remaining messages, is there
a quicker way to stop reading the thread or do I have to press command W until
they are all closed?

Also, I think I remember my next question being posted but don't remember the
answer. I've accidentally closed the main window so the message table no
longer is shown. I know I can close Mail and open it back up again again but
wondered if there is another way to bring back the message table.

Thanks much,
Linda

Re: Reading messages in threads

2010-09-11 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi Linda.

If you don't want to read anymore messages in thread, press command option W
together. This closes all mail windows.

The next question you asked is if the windows are closed what to do. Press
Command 1 to open the mail window.

Kawal.

Re: jawbone icon hero

2010-09-11 Thread Scott Granados
Not sure about fifth element but Brickhouse Security makes an in ear hidden
bluetooth option that's just like what the feds use.:)

Want to get your secret service on get one.

I like the jawbone products but the construction is a little weedy.
They also use Chinese labor heavily so I tend to go with Plantronics myself
which does outsource some of their work but they do all their high end work and
design / operations in Santa Cruz CA.
I've wondered of our German or Austrian friends have put together any
headsets. I'd love to see what AKG or Senheiser could do with making a
bluetooth headset.:)

Re: Reading messages in threads

2010-09-11 Thread Linda Adams
Kawal,

Thanks for the information. Command 1 works great to bring back the Mail
window if totally closed by accident.

I need to explain my first question a little more. If a thread has 8 messages,
I've read 3 and don't need to read he rest, instead of pressing command W 5
more times, can I clear out the remaining messages and return to the message
window? When I pressed Command option W it closed everything which is what I
wanted to avoid. Pressing command 1 takes me back to the inbox instead of the
Macvisionaries mailbox where I had been reading threads.

Thanks,
Linda

Hi Cheryl,

I took a look at the current Kobo Books set up, and from what you say,
now when you double tap the center of the screen to bring up the page
controls, and find "Icon Gear" in the top right corner of the screen,
you can't locate the "Display Settings, button" by moving your finger
down the screen from "Icon Gear". Apparently the page controls can
now come up either with or without the controls for fonts, overview,
screen brightness and settings on the bottom half of the screen, and
this appears to have changed in the version they released (3.4.1 on
August 28) just after I posted my instructions. I'm cc'ing the new
instructions to the macvisionaries list. Here's another way to
navigate to the "Display Settings, button" which didn't work at the
time of my earlier post:

1) Double tap the center of the screen to bring up page controls, and
check that they are present by finding the "I'm Reading, button" at
the top left corner of the screen by either touching this corner, or
doing a four-finger flick up to navigate to it. Flicking right from
the "I'm Reading, button" should take you to an "Icon Gear, button" at
the top right corner of the screen. These buttons are just below the
status bar icons for signal strength (at the top left) and battery
power (at the top right), respectively. However, now the default
seems to be that when you bring up page controls, you only display
these two buttons at the top of the page, and a position slider at the
bottom of the page -- you don't bring up the buttons for getting to
the "Settings" menu or for adjusting fonts, etc. These only come up
when you double tap the "Icon Gear, button" at the top right corner of
the screen, after you've brought up the page controls.

2) Do a four-finger flick down to move to the end of the page.
VoiceOver should say "Toggle Night reading mode". If it says something
like "minus 0 per cent, adjustable; swipe up or down to adjust the
value", do a four-finger flick up to move to "I'm Reading, button",
then flick right to
3) Flick left six times till you hear "Display Settings, button",
then double tap anywhere on the screen.
4) You should now be on the Settings page (which won't be labeled
with a heading) and be able to flick down to the "Page transition
style" category and then flick right to set this to "Scrolling" and
double tap.
5) Navigate back to the "Back, button" in the top left corner (either
by touching it, or by doing a four finger flick up), and double tap to
return to the previous screen.
6) Touch the center of the screen (away from any of the page controls
-- anywhere in the top third of the screen will do), then double tap
to dismiss the page controls.

You should now be able to navigate through the book using the links.
The major change for VoiceOver users between version 3.4 (released
August 20) and 3.4.1 (released August 28) is that bringing up page
controls by double tapping in the center of the screen (after ensuring
that focus is not on any of the buttons etc. by simply touching the
center of the screen first), does not bring up the controls in the
bottom half of the screen that allow you to access the settings, or
read the overview of the book and access the chapters.

I'll describe these controls in detail assuming that you do a four
finger flick down to reach to the last element on the full page
controls, which is (3b) "toggle night reading mode, button" in the
bottom right corner. I'll number the buttons according to their row
number in the bottom half of the screen, with a letter giving the
order of their appearance, from left to right. (Since we are flicking
back from the end of the page, these appear in inverted order).
Flicking left from there you have buttons for:

1. (3a) "toggles screen rotation lock" (bottom left)
2. (2d) "increase brightness" (far right, first of two buttons above
"night reading mode")
3. (2c) "reduce brightness" (right, second of two buttons above "night
reading mode")
4. (2b) "increase text size" (left, second of two buttons above
"rotation lock")
5. (2a) "reduce text size" (far left, first of two buttons above
"rotation lock")

6. (1d) "display settings" (far right, just above "increase brightness")
7. (1c) "overview" (right, just above "reduce brightness"
8. (1b) "browse bookmarks" (left, just above, "increase text size")
9. (1a) "add or remove bookmark" (far left, just above "reduce text
size")

In summary, there are three rows of buttons in the bottom third of the
iPhone screen when you double tap the "icon gear" button in the top
right corner after bringing up page controls. The key buttons you
want to reference are (1d) under item 6 -- the "display settings"
button and (1c) under item 7 -- the "overview" button.

You only need to access "display settings" once, to change the page
view to "scrolling". This will automatically let you n

2010-09-11 Thread Laura Bratton
 Hi All
how do I select multiple non-sequential items in the address book? I followed
the below steps but it didn't work. What am I doing wrong?

• Navigate to the first item.
• Turn off cursor tracking (VO-shift-f3)
• Navigate to the next item you wish to select.
• Press VO-cmd-space.
• Repeat the above steps to select each of the next items.
• Press cmd-c to Copy or whatever combination performs your desired task.
• Don't forget to turn cursor tracking back on. (VO-shift-f3 again)
Thanks for any help,

Hi,

This does also work in Address Book. Make sure that if you don't have cursors
following each other that you first bring the mouse cursor to the VO cursor
using VO-cmd-f5 (you may need to add the FN key if using a laptop).

If you are using a laptop, you'll need to add the FN key when using any key
combination with an function key.

Re: how do I select multiple non-sequential items in the address book?

2010-09-11 Thread Esther

Hi,

Just to add to Tim's comments, yes, this does work for Address Book.
Also make sure that you interact before moving to your first
selection. You can also check your selection at any time with VO-F6.
The VO-Command-Space shortcut is a toggle action, so if you checked
your list of selected items with VO-F6, and decided that one of these
items was included in error, just navigate to it and use VO-Command-
Space to remove it from your list of selected items. And if your list
is very long, you can lock your Voiceover keys with VO-semi-colon,
then arrow up or down your list and select/deselect with Command-
Space, and check selections by pressing F6. Unlock your keys by
pressing semi-colon and remember to turn cursor tracking back on again
at the end. (VO-Shift-F3).

Cheers,

Esther

tracpad question

2010-09-11 Thread Carolyn
Hi guys:
It suddenly strikes me that I often find myself exploring the mbp on kSaturday
nights, coming up with questions. So, true to form, here we go:
I've worked for about a year with the iPhone, and understand how to make
gestures. I'm finally starting to try to move this knowledge to the multitouch
trackpad. Something that isn't clear to me is how to employ the trackpad and
when to opt for it rather than keyboard. Here then is my question:
I have managed to select the Mail app on the trackpad. Is there a way to open
it from there? Because when I attempt the double tap, that does nothing.
I feel like I'm closer to linking the devices together in my understanding, but
missing something.
Any input welcome. and tia

Re: tracpad question

2010-09-11 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I generally use the track pad commander for surfing the web. I don't use it
very much in apps like Mail and iTunes because it forces me to interact with
tables and such more than I find necessary. I'm not sure why double tapping on
the Mail app isn't opening it up for you though. The commander sure does cut
down on some of those 4 and 5 key combos. lol. This is where making your own
assignable gestures comes into play.

Hi:
Please disregard. Found the answer in an old post I had saved.

Thanks

  Subject: tracpad question

  Hi guys:
It suddenly strikes me that I often find myself exploring the mbp on
kSaturday nights, coming up with questions.
Is there a way to
open it from there? Because when I attempt the double tap, that does nothing.
I feel like I'm closer to linking the devices together in my understanding,
but missing something.
  Any input welcome. and tia

Re: tracpad question

2010-09-11 Thread Carolyn
Ah, Ricardo:
Thanks for getting back to me. I found out it's double-tap on the left side of
the screen in the middle. This is getting to be a very cool device. But,
Safari was behaving incredibly badly during my training session. It set a good
example for the team of some of the cr*p we have to go through at times.:)
Take care and thanks

  Hi,

I generally use the track pad commander for surfing the web. I don't use it
very much in apps like Mail and iTunes because it forces me to interact with
tables and such more than I find necessary. I'm not sure why double tapping on
the Mail app isn't opening it up for you though. The commander sure does cut
down on some of those 4 and 5 key combos. lol. This is where making your own
assignable gestures comes into play.

iphone4, some questions about vo

2010-09-11 Thread Windels William
Hello all,
I have some more questions about the iphone 4 with voiceover:
How can I transfer a (pdf) document to my iphone to read it on the move?
(I don't have MobileMe).
I see already some options:
bluetooth, by mail or?
Or, is it also with itunes, like music?
And, where can I find the uploaded files to my iphone since the iphone isn't
visible
in the finder as a external drive?

thanx for your answers
William

Mod note re: While sending Maccessibility news on the list

2010-09-11 Thread Geoff Waaler
Greetings,

Since Cara and her good buddy Elvis Presley (and y'all actually thought he was
dead) are off in the South of France spending those millions that come her way
every time you click on a Maccessibility article I thought I'd put on my
moderator hat for the first time on this list to request closure of this topic.

To be honest there were a number of occasions when I wished there were a couple
more lines in the Maccessibility email so I wouldn't have to click on the link.
In many cases though I was already aware of the content -- e.g. Esther wrote
her typical excellent and informative description of the new IOS4.1 key
commands. Saving her post rendered perusal of that article superfluous. When
the couple lines made me curious enough to click on the link, however I
accepted the reality that this is how main stream communication is conducted
today. If someone asks about basic voiceOver commands would you cut and paste
the text of applicable chapters from the VO getting started guide into a reply
and fill everyone's in-box, or simply reference the URL? I would suggest that
the latter is infinitely more desirable especially for the majority who
wouldn't be in need of this information. Sorry, but in this day and age its a
reasonable expectation that users be capable of clicking links contained in
emails since browser integration has been a basic feature of main stream email
clients as far back as the mid 1990s. More over, screen readers offer a way
to quickly skip to headings, or voiceOver's item chooser would probably do the
trick.

And speaking of filling up in-boxes, I would suggest that the venting,
conspiracy theories and general foolishness over a policy someone pointed out
early on "aint gonna" change consumed much more human life than, gasp, having
to click on a link so as to learn more about a topic of interest. Just do the
math. We presently have 556 subscribers. For sake of argument lets say it
takes an average of five seconds to deal with a post, though I'm sure its
probably much longer. Okay, so five seconds times 556 subscribers equals 46
minutes and 20 seconds of human life for every post. This is why I believe
it's important to make one's post count, and there is really no value whipping
a dead horse.

I don't personally know Maccessibility's business model, but lets say for sake
of argument that the authors get some kind of compensation from advertisers
based on list traffic. Okay, seriously, even if this is so, WTF is wrong with
that? How does this vary from sites such as Snopes or Google, or just about
every other site we routinely visit. From what I've seen, a lot of work goes
into Maccessibility and I suspect it's not likely to by groceries, let alone
send anyone on a crews to the South of France with Elvis. As with any other
site you absolutely have a choice whether the content warrants your time to
visit.

Now can we please put this topic to bed? Hope everyone is having a great
weekend.
Geoff
